DANCING FUN
I don’t make love by kissing, I make love by dancing. Fred Astaire Remember back when everyone was disco dancing and then I did it and that was the end of that. Just Bill@WilliamAder You can teach an elephant to dance, but the likelihood of its stepping on your toes is very high. Gary Moss Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire. George Bernard Shaw Dancing is wonderful training for girls, it’s the first way you learn to guess what a man is going to do before he does it. Christopher Morley Contrary to popular opinion, the hustle is not a new dance step, it is an old business procedure. Fran Liebowitz If people stand in a circle long enough, they’ll eventually begin to dance. George Carlin

It should have been a great day. First I
was going to DANNY DARRYL’S
birthday party in Santa Ana. Then I
was going to LOIS GABRIEL’S new
digs in Placentia, and that evening was
joining GLENN SYRUP, his friend
Sandy, and a pal in Rancho Cucamonga where the 3rd
DEGREE BLUES was playing. I had been waiting for
them to come to my area for years.
It was Saturday, the day when the whole state
gets on the freeway. It took me almost two hours to drive
49 miles. There were no parking spaces open at
DANNY’S party and after driving around to find
somewhere to park, I drove into a motel. A guy came
running out to tell me I couldn’t park there and
suggested I park next door. I explained there was no
open space there and people were waiting in line for
someone to leave so they could park. He finally took
pity on me and let me stay.
Inside DANNY’S building, I had to go to the
bathroom after driving that long, and the guy at the desk
pointed out two restrooms, both of which were occupied.
He said there were no others. This is a nursing home and
I was so desperate that I was about to go into someone’s
room and use a bathroom when I ran into an attendant
and told her I was going to wet my pants if she didn’t
help me. She got me to one in the nick of time. Whew.
The party was on the outside patio (lots of sun
on a hot day) with an Hawaiian motif. It was hosted by
DANNY’S lovely and gracious daughter, Danielle.
JUDY and FLIP were there. I saw PAT
PATERNOSTER, SANDY ROWELL with husband,
ROGER and many other dancers. We were given leis
and told to eat. I managed to grab a plate of great food
and sit next to DANNY when a Tahitian group began
entertaining. I was still eating when the group leader
asked for volunteers to get up and dance. CHRISTY
KINDIG, playful and energetic, hopped up but nobody
else was volunteering. I was embarrassed for the group
and for the birthday boy, so I put my plate down and got
up to make a fool of myself. A couple of guys joined us.
One was Frankie Rodriguez and JUDY joined in for a
while.
So there we were learning how to throw our hips
and swing them as we went round in circles. The gal
teaching us was great and went almost to the ground
with bent knees which of course I can’t do because of
my knee replacements. I felt really stupid but I think the
audience got a kick out of it.
As a gift, I took DANNY Burt Reynolds’ book,
But Enough About Me which he says he really enjoyed.
Lots of old Hollywood inside stories in there and it is
easy reading.
I headed for LOIS’ condo. When I arrived I
didn’t know where to go so I asked a guy who was in his
garage if I was in the right place. He was half in the bag
and falling in drunk love with me. As I bent into my car
for my phone to call LOIS, he was rubbing my butt. Oh!
Happy Day! LOIS gave me the great news that I was at
her PREVIOUS condo and her present condo was 25
minutes away. I put the address in my GPS and it led me
to the 91 Freeway which I knew was under construction.
So I had to take side streets with 3-minute stop lights at
every corner.
When I arrived at LOIS’ new place, I called her
and said I was at the gate. She went to the opposite gate
out on the north 40, so that took about 15 minutes to
connect. While waiting, I called all my friends about
meeting with them that night and nobody answered!! I
left for home and it took me an hour and 15 minutes to
go 35 miles. I called everyone again when I got home
and left messages with the address of the club and the
time we were meeting. I asked them NOT to call me
back because I just had a few minutes to freshen up
before I left to meet my friend early to share a sandwich.
Of course everyone called back anyway and took up my
free minutes.
Back into traffic to get to the bar, met my friend,
split our sandwich and GLENN and SANDY arrived just
when the band started playing. In the middle of the hour
while GLENN and I were dancing, the whole block of
lights went out!!! They had auxiliary backup, however,
so we could still see, dance and enjoy the music. The
perfect end to a lousy day. No traffic on the way home
because it was late. Glad DANNY had a happy birthday
party. Not sure I’ll be up to going to the next one.
