Feed you soulwith a side of blues

Gordonput the billy onNOT TOO far off the beaten track is a tiny town called Gordon. (Head from Daylesford to Ballan and turn right, it’s just a few ks up the road). And at 93 Main Street you’ll find While the Billy Boils café. (Now shhh, don’t be alarmed, there’s no actual billy in the kitchen, your latte is made with a fair dinkum espresso machine, not on a campfire). While the Billy Boils is a rabbit warren of rooms stuffed with local memorabilia and historic items, and includes the tiny Kookaburra Wilde Bookshop, with a sweet little honesty box to pay for items. Sit on the verandah or out the front in the shade and be serenaded by wrens (or the local busker if you’re lucky)! They serve a delish country High Tea on the first Saturday of each month (February 2) and Valentine’s evening will be extra spesh with live entertainment and dinner from 6pm. (Bookings required for High Tea and dinner) Open Tues-Sun 9am-4pm. Phone: 5368 9997.

AUSTRALIA hearts Justin Townes Earle. Don’t know what it is about this lanky-bespectacled-blues-soaked-bloke, but whenever he tours (possibly 6 times now??) we tend to go a little bananas about him. His audiences love the brokenhearted country thing he has going on, and with so much life crammed into his 31 years, he has loads of stories to tell, and he does this so well up on stage. (Incase you don’t know him, Justin’s blues pedigree is pretty impressive – his dad is Steve Earle). Justin is touring the east coast of Australia this time, and will be doing just two shows in Victoria – one in Melbourne and the other at the Theatre Royal, (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine) Saturday, February 2. Tickets to the Theatre Royal gig are $40 (show only, 8:30pm) or $83 dinner and show, (seated from 7pm). His support is Robert Ellis (also from the USA). For more info and bookings call the Theatre Royal: 5472 1196.

Gourmet Take Awayyour place or mine?YOU KNOW those nights when you just can’t be bothered cooking? You know those days when the thought of slapping together another sandwich for lunch has you looking at the fridge with an audible meh? Oh yes. Those days and evenings roll around with reliable regularity. It’s kind of like Gary and Shane from Daylesford’s new café: The Good Food Store were inside our heads when they dreamt up their new café concept. Well for starters the name says it all really… They make good food. (Actually really good food – but they’re much too nice to christen their shop such). You’re most welcome to take a seat at their teeny new café: (8 Howe Street) for brekky and lunch, or help yourself to some gourmet take away. There’s always something wrapped and ready - if you need to grab something to go. For lunch they are serving up outta-sight pulled beef rolls, knock out burgers, fresh wraps, and sangas (you get 3 halves, not just two, which is really quite awesome if you’ve had a big busy morning and you’re all appetited up). Hot (or cold) take-away meals come in two sizes, small and large (again, depending on how hungry you are, or if you intend on sharing). If you work close by, take it back to work, dig into the deliciousness and you’ll win the daily ‘I’ve-got-the-best-lunch-in-the-staff-room-today’ competition. (The prize for which is: you get to eat your awesome lunch and everyone is jealous). Gary and Shane have a past-life as ‘the chowder boys’ and are well loved and known ‘round these parts for their previous café Chowder House. The Chowder days are long gone, but the passion for amazing soups, casseroles and hearty flavoursome food with soul is still there, (just thinking about it almost makes us long for cooler weather… almost)… Needless to say, watch this space for their up and coming autumnal fare. The menu changes every three to four days, so let’s just say you’ll never feel ‘meh’ about lunch again. The Good Food Store is open Tuesday to Friday 8:30am ‘til 5:30pm, and Sat: 8:30 ‘til 4. More info 5348 1654.

THE RECENT craft explosion is a good thing. Yes. It is a very good thing. However, social media sites like Pinterest can cause one to feel slightly challenged in the craft department. Sure it’s all well and good to create a crocheted MASTERPIECE in an afternoon and have it shared around the globe with half a million repins, but if your knitting or crochet project resembles what happens when a pack of wild kittens attack a poorly made jumper, then you might need some support. The Darn I’m Hooked Crochet and Knitting group at Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria St) will help you learn the basics of these two art forms. Learn to make beanies, toys, scarves, blankets and more. There are loads of modern and vintage patterns available. Learn the basic stitches and you’ll be the Queen of Pinterest DIY in no time. Sessions start Sunday February 3, 3pm-5pm, (BYO hooks and needles) More info: 5345 2356.

THE rumours are true folks… DAYLESFORD’S GETTING A MOVIE THEATRE! Yaaaaaay! The Rex (47-53 Vincent Street) is a beautiful old theatre, with, well… let’s just say it’s had its recent ups and downs. But we at lost are happy to report the downs are a thing of the past, and a wonderful new management committee and dedicated team of locals are putting the finishing touches on our very own Daylesford Community Theatre. The paint is dry, the fantastic comfy red movie chairs (complete with cup holders and movable armrests) are in place, and the popcorn is ready to be popped and scoffed! The Rex Theatre will screen up to six sessions a week, (including arthouse, foreign, cult favourites, kids’ flicks, comedies, old faves… and yes, get ready for theme nights! Dress ups anyone? CAN’T WAIT!) The Rex will also showcase live theatre groups, plays and performances. (Local theatre groups are already rehearsing in anticipation of the Rex Theatre opening! It is going to be very, very exciting for the whole town once that curtain is raised!) The new Rex Theatre is run entirely by volunteers and ALL profits go to the theatre. So, lovers of all things stage and screen: because this is just the beginning, the theatre needs your help! There are many ways to donate to your own theatre, from purchasing a simple membership for $30, (this gets you $10 tickets, lolly shop discounts and 10% off at select stores around town) Right through to ‘adopting a chair’ For $250 you can have your name engraved onto a plaque on one of the afore-mentioned comfy chairs! (Oooh spesh!) Friday February 8, Dolly Diamond will be hosting a gala auction evening, at the Theatre to raise funds. Fine art pieces, special items, advertising and seat packages will be up for auction. Dig deep Daylesford. This is for all of us! For more info on the Rex Theatre, gala auction, or how to help call in at The Rex for a tour (Wednesdays and Thursdays) or call Karen Hemming: 0402 010 266. Check the Advocate for updates and session times, or the big screen at The Rex Theatre. (Films WILL be screening this month!!) Hooray!

and possibly a pythonMary had a little alpaca

Sustainability50 shades of greenLIVING sustainably means so many things. You don’t need to leap completely off the grid and throw away your shoes to live more positively in your corner of the planet. There are loads of ways to live a more sustainable life, and a great way to learn about the latest ideas, products and solutions is to head along to the Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival. To be held: Saturday, February 9, at the rear of the Woodend Neighbourhood House. (47 Forest Street). Browse information and business stalls, be inspired by amazing guest speakers, devour delish hot vegetarian food (and fairtrade coffee) by MR VEG. Take a permaculture garden tour and discover how easy it is to make your life a little greener inside and out. There’ll be lots of fun stuff for the kids to do too. For more info go to the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group website: mrsgonline.org.au or call Alastair Fleming on 0412 178 408.

MARY had a little Alpaca, its fleece was brown as mud, and everywhere that Mary went, the Alpaca chewed its cud. (Thank you Mary, now back to your lambs.) Creswick Woollen Mill (Railway Parade) is home to some very well loved alpacas, they offer their fleece in return for pats and attention. Quite generous of them really, it really is amazing stuff. The Mill is also home to the only remaining woollen coloured spinning mill of its type in Australia. Here they create blankets, throws, garments and accessories in the most luxurious alpaca and woollen blends (all for sale at the mill). And every now and then, the alpacas aren’t the only four legged friends vying for attention. Saturday, February 9, The Roo Keepers will be visiting the mill with some cute (and not so cute) native animals and critters to entertain and educate the littlies. This interactive demonstration goes for an hour. For more info call 5345 2202.

painted with HeinekenIf only Van Gogh

FINE artists have poisoned themselves for their art for centuries. Poor old Van Gogh lost his marbles (and consequently an ear) due to his love of yellow paint… (sunflowers, haystacks, starry nights, anyone?) Ahh cadmium, it’ll do that to ya… The toxicity of traditional pigments has only ‘recently-ish’ been discovered. Nowadays you can’t purchase the nasty stuff. In fact, some artists have turned their backs entirely on chemical pigments and are getting right back to nature to inspire their work and hand-make the colours, mediums and paints they use to create their works of fine art. A Sustainable Painting Workshop will be held at Rosie’s Studio, (439 Yandoit Creek Road) on Saturday, February 9. Artists (of any background or experience) from the region (and beyond) are invited to attend this workshop, to produce a work of art, with zero impact and harm to the environment (and the artist, of course). In this session you will create the support for the work, with reused materials, home made glue and natural sealant. Then the fun begins. You will get the opportunity to create lovely thick paints produced with clays, lime, and mediums like oil, egg, or casein, and beer, (oh yes… beer! - But sorry Vincent, probably not Heineken). Once you have mixed your dream palette you’ll be invited to embrace your inner artist and begin your work, using your clayey paint, any available pigments, your fingers, rags, and your intuitive brain. The sustainable painting workshop will open your mind to new creative possibilities (… hello, painting with mud, beer, and egg, who knew?!) and as any creative person knows, trying something new is good for your soul. The workshop will run from 10:30am ‘til 4:30pm. The cost is $55 (fee includes all materials). Call Rosie for more info and bookings on: 0487 597 578, or email [email protected], or go to share.asn.au to find out more.

Little producersare a big deal

Hanging out forValentine’s DayST. VALENTINE’S Day. Either you’re into it: Cupid’s arrows lined up, little blue box, flowers and schmaltzy words scrawled in a card ready to go, or, you don’t believe in such fabricated nonsense and think of the 14th as more of a hump-day for this short little month… (Well it is, probably in more ways than one… if you think about it. Wink-wink. Sorry couldn’t resist). Picnic at Hanging Rock is a classic Australian film. A mystery set on Valentine’s Day at the Rock itself. Each year (on the 14th of February) the film is shown under the stars at Hanging Rock. (South Rock Road, Woodend.) Bring a picnic blanket and someone to smooch, or not… (depending on how you view the 14th) a picnic, and a friend called Miranda, if you have one at the ready. More info: 5421 1468, ticket bookings: 1800 888 802.

LAKE HOUSE is synonymous with the most exquisite fresh produce from around the region, so when they host their Annual Regional Producers’ Day (on Sunday, February 10, 10am ‘til 4pm) you know it’ll be an outstanding celebration of food and wine. The day is held in market style, take your time to wander around, meet and chat to some of the best growers, bakers, winemakers and brewers in the region, and sample their delectable fare. The wood fired pizza oven will be serving up piping hot pizza deliciousness and the gourmet BBQ will be fired up as well. The $5 entry fee includes cooking demos, entertainment, and lots of lovely wine tastings and foodie morsels to sample. The Hepburn Shire Sustainability award will be announced, whilst you laze away the arvo munching on something delish under the shade of the orchard trees. Oh so good. For more info call Lake House 5348 3329.

dive into your localHorizon pool-shmorizon pool

LEMONADE icypoles, grassy hills patchworked with strewn towels and lanky freckled boys doing endless bombs off the diving board is what a baked summer day at the local pool is all about. The Hepburn Shire is home to several outdoor pools, locked up through the long, cold winter months, (aaand the slightly less long and cold autumn and spring months), but come summer, the gates are unlocked and thrown back for the queues of sunscreened bodies to parade in, and drench themselves in the blue. BYO noodles, inflatables, kickboards and floaties, stake your claim on a patch of sunburnt grass, bring a good book, or dare to dip your toe in the cool water. Deeply chlorinated lazy summer days at the local pool are a part of our national psyche… and if your psyche needs a little old-school-pool-time this month, here’s where it’s at in the region: Daylesford Pool is on Central Springs Road. Weekends and public holidays the pool is open 10am ‘til 6pm. School days the pool is open midday ‘til 6pm. For more info phone: 5348 3255. Clunes Pool is on Ligar Street. Opening hours are: Weekends and public holidays 10am ‘til 6pm. School days the pool is open midday ‘til 6pm. For more information phone: 5345 3312. Trentham Pool is on Market Street. The pool is open on weekends and public holidays from 1pm ’til 6pm and on school days from 3:30 ‘til 6pm. For more information phone 5424 1212. In Creswick, Calambeen Park is on Cushing Avenue. (This is a toddlers’ pool only). This pool is open weekends 1pm ‘til 6pm, and 3:30 ‘til 6pm school days. Word has it that the pools will remain open longer if it’s a scorcher. Entry to any of the Hepburn Shire pools costs $4.20 Adult, $3.70 Concession, $3.20 Child, and $1 for spectators.

Love a little Dirty Dancingon Valentine’s Day

and slam some wordsPipe up

NO ONE puts baby in a corner. Even if you’ve never seen the film, you know the lines, the songs, and that lift. Ahh the lift. Dirty Dancing is an 80s classic, it’s a bit cheesy, it’s a bit schmaltzy, it’s a bit romantic… just like Valentine’s day… which makes it a stroke of genius that Eastern Peake Winery happen to be screening it Valentine’s weekend (Friday, February 15.) 20% of ticket sales will go directly to the CFA, so even if you’re not into Patrick Swayze, you’ve gotta love the CFA, so book a ticket, bring a picnic, buy a bottle of Eastern Peake’s finest and get cosy in the vines with one (or several) of your favourite people. Eastern Peake Winery produces boutique vintages and sells them directly to niche retailers and restaurants nationally. The winery is at Coghills Creek (between Creswick and Clunes at 67 Pickfords Road) Tickets are $15. For more info and bookings call Jenny: 0417 641 516, or go to easternpeake.com.au

POETRY. It’s not all dodgy haikus and dubious limericks. Just ask any decent rapper with a rhyme in their head and a mic in their hand. The first annual Pipe Up Poetry Slam is happening Friday, February 15, at Stockroom Kyneton (98 Piper Street) from 7pm. If you like to have your way with words, the Poetry Slam has a place for you on stage. It promises to be an excellent fast-paced-high-energy night with loads of talented local wordsmiths stepping up to slam. Each Slammer gets (strictly) three minutes on the mic to woo the judges with their words, (no instruments, no props, just you and your words, and they have to be your words, okay? No cheating and pinching some else’s) If you’d like to perform, there are two categories, under 25s, and over. To register email: [email protected], or if you just want to watch the words in action, tickets are $10 at the door. More info search Pipe Up Poetry Slam Kyneton on Facebook.

A little bit Londona whole lot DaylesfordDAYLESFORD is well regarded for its coffee. So well regarded that many Melbournites feel confident making a permanent tree change to the ‘hood, just knowing this town can totally deliver an outstanding cup of the hot stuff. (If you’re leaving Melbs for good - it helps to know this… really, it does). One such new establishment in town is the London Café and Gallery. This new haven for lovers of coffee is inspired by the cafes and hipster coffee shops in Londontown. One of the café’s family members spent many, many hours in Londons’ coffee houses - sipping lattes and dreaming of replicating their very own little piece of London back in Australia. With its dark walls, polished concrete floors and mis-matched chairs, the feel is the there, as is the coffee they are so passionate about. The menu leans healthy gourmet, with loads of fresh salads and organic produce, gluten free treats and healthy-not-heavy plates of deliciousness. (No old-school fatty English Breakfasts here in case you were wondering: you’re more likely to see quinoa on the brekky menu than fried sausages and bacon.) Through the café doors you enter the Daylesford Fine Art Gallery. This space is dedicated to fine art prints, lithographs, and etchings, by some of the most recognised names in Australian art. (John Brack, John Olsen, Charles Blackman, Lionel Lindsay, and Richard Spare… to name a few… oooh!) Price points begin at $100, and each piece comes with a valuation and authenticity certificate… all works exhibited are for sale… (just a little something to ponder over your quinoa and single origin espresso). The London Café and Gallery is inside the Rex Centre, (47 Vincent Street) down near the new theatre. Take in a cheeky brunch before a matinee, or discuss the finer plot points and subtleties of production design post film, over coffee and cake (The London afternoon tea offers coffee or tea with your choice of cake for $9). The London Café and Gallery is open from 9:30am daily. For more info phone: 0458 764 281.

Treasure huntersstart your enginesTHERE’S a fine line that distinguishes a collector from a hoarder. This is the line that separates you from being ‘just a little bit quirky’, to being the feature story on Today Tonight. Any true collector knows it’s all about the hunt. That thrilling first glimpse of recognising the treasure you seek, and no matter what you collect, from petrol pumps to East German ceramic vases, you know the feeling we’re talking about. So treasure hunters, here are a couple of dates for the diary: Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17, circle them in red texta, because the 5th Annual Maldon Antique and Collectables fair is on. This quality fair will have over 120 stalls of great stuff to trawl through, from Victorian and interstate sellers. The fair will be held at the Maldon Footy Ground from 8am ‘til 5pm both days. Entry is $2, (kids free). More info at: maldoncollectables.com or phone Mark or Bonnie on: 0414 244 842.

The Sunday night blues(BYO harmonica)

On your bikeif you lycra it or not

EVERYONE thinks they can play the harmonica. This is a fact. The reality, however, is much different. In the capable hands of a true student of the blues, the harp sounds remarkable. In the hands of any other student, it can sound oddly like a wheezy hyena getting cozy with a broken set of miniature bagpipes. In the trusty hands of Australian blues hero Chris Wilson the harmonica tends more remarkable, and much, MUCH less hyena. Chris has shared the stage with the likes of Bob Dylan and Paul Kelly, and will be showing off his mad skillz on the harp, guitar and vocals with his full band, at the Old Hepburn Hotel, (236 Main Road) on Sunday, February 17. Chris and band are on stage from 4:30pm, no doubt doing a few tunes from the new album Flying Fish, and some fave old blues covers. Tix $10 at the door. More info: 5348 2207.

DRESS UPS and bike riding. Brilliant. With your favouritest friends and family? Even better. Plus a bit of relaxo time at the end at one of the best old hotels in the region… OK, where do we sign up? The Annual Woodend Village to Village Family Bike Ride is on Sunday, February 17. Bring your trusty old treadly, (vintage if you have one, or bright ‘n’ shiny if you prefer) and dress up vintage style. (Pedal back in time to whatever vintage you like… Got a 70s bike? Fro and flares for you my friend, you get the picture.) Everyone will meet at the Woodend Clocktower at 10am. Then saddle up and enjoy a leisurely summer ride, winding your way to the Cosmo Hotel in Trentham… with a few refreshment stops along the way. Cost is only $20, (enter at entryzone.com.au). The ride is fully supported, a courtesy bus will take you and your trusty ride back to Woodend at the end of the day. More info? Call Matt 0407 246 063, or Russ 0423 388 167.

Review of the Month:

Ramp it up40s & 50s styleSWING DANCING and skateboarding. Together at last. Now before you book yourself in for an x-ray and six weeks of plaster, read on: It has been brought to our attention that Daylesford’s wee skate-park needs a bit of a refurb. It has a nice new playground with fun stuff for the youngest townspeeps to play on, (there’s a slide, climby things, a cool bucket swingy thing, and a pretty rad turny-see-saw thing). BUT… once you tire of the play equipment, and look beyond the hill, a kid of a certain age, with a certain set of wheels, will be drawn to the ramps eventually. And if you’re a newbie on a skateboard, and you hit those big ramps chances are you might need to set aside a month or so to get better acquainted with a plaster cast. You see, the Daylesford ramps are a bit tricky if you’ve never ridden a board before. So loads of kindly locals are holding a fab fundraising evening, to raise a bit of cash for a new beginner’s skate ramp, to increase participation at the park, and encourage the littlies to have a go! The fundraising evening is called Mood 2 Swing, a 40s and 50s style swing-dance evening with the Michael Westlake Quintet, Paris Payne, Jenni Brown, Jess Lyons, Geoffrey Williams, and Anni Coyne live. Yay! Dress in 40s and 50s swingin’ style, enjoy the most amazing live talent, and dance ‘til the wee hours. Take happy snaps in the photo-booth (c’mon… who doesn’t love a photo-booth after a few cocktails?) and oh yes, the bar will most definitely be serving cocktails. (Aptly named after famous actors of the day… an Astaire Daiquiri anyone?) The Mood 2 Swing Swing Dance extravaganza will be held at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) Saturday, February 16. Showtime is from 7:30pm. Tickets are $45, or $25 concession. Buy your tickets from St Mel’s Cyclery, (5 Park Lane, tucked in at the Daylesford Coles carpark), Portal 108 (108 Main Road, Hepburn Springs), or Breakfast and Beer (117 Vincent Street, Daylesford). For more info go to: finlaystreetandparklaneentertainment.blogspot.com.au. All proceeds go to the skate park refurbishment.

Trashy Treasuresand vintage amazingnessTHE PERSON who re-branded ‘old stuff’ and called it ‘vintage’ is ever-so-slightly genius. Suddenly, the more ‘rustic’ it is (there’s another one of ‘those’ words) the more we want it. There’s an ever-shifting tide of rustic/vintage awesomeness in Daylesford, at the Amazing Mill Market. The Mill has been in Daylesford for years, but now has a new owner, and a bit of a new lease on life. But Mark, (the new owner) isn’t the only new thing at the Mill… They’re shuffling things around a bit, have some exciting new stall holders, some spekky new lighting and landscaping and it’s all looking a bit more amazing than it did (which is partly why it also has a slightly new name… ‘The Amazing Mill Market’). Well… some of the stuff you can buy really is pretty amazing. Search the stalls of pre-loved, retro, vintage, collectable, industrial, and antique items to discover what ‘old stuff’ you’ll give a new life to at your place. If you’ve ever wanted a 50s cupboard for storing mis-matched china in, you’ll find the cupboard and all the china in one lap around the Mill, plus the stylin 50s sunglasses, swing skirt, old coke bottles and Bakelite radio to complete the look. And even if you’re not into the retro vibe, a browse around the eclectic stalls will have you saying “OMG my Nana totes had that bikkie tin”, (please don’t actually say that though) or “my Dad had that sign in his shed”, or, “that was my favourite record, *sigh* if only we had a record player, oh hang on.. there’s one now!!” – and shazzam! Instantly your lo-fi, vintage cred jumps up 100 points. It is totally worth the trip down memory lane to find The Amazing Mill Market. The Daylesford Mill is at 105 Central Springs Road. If you’re reeeally in the mood for a vintage treasure hunt you’ll need to know that Mark has also taken over The Mill at Geelong (114 Bellarine Highway) and Ballarat as well, (9367 Western Highway). It’s like the golden triangle of collectables treasure hunters! (Better hitch up the trailer, you’ll need it.) They’re all open 7 days a week 10am ‘til 6pm. For more info go to millmarkets.com.au.

Peace, love andThe Old Hepburn HotelWHEN ALL the big international acts journey to our glorious sandy shores for the endless parade of summer festivals, we all benefit. Even if you can’t commit to 450 DJs and bands on a big day out in a summerdayze at the falls, countless side-shows by superfab performers pop up everywhere, including Hepburn Springs. British musician and Lip Service actress Heather Peace is one such act. After countless Aussie fans bombarded her with emails and social media requests to tour, Heather has decided to hit Australia to perform at the world famous Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Then she’ll load up the tour bus and head around the country, for a mini tour - including a show at The Old Hepburn Hotel, (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). Heather Peace will be supported here by Hepburn fave Michelle Parsons, Friday, February 22, from 8:30pm. Tickets are $25+booking fee. For more info call the pub 5348 2207.

Pretty little things(and big things too)

It’s Chimichanga!!Say hola to Arribar!WHEN Oprah visited Australia she caught up with an old BFF for Tacos. Because everyone in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD loves tacos. And what’s not to like? Salty spicy meat and crunchy salady bits wrapped in steaming tortillas (or better still… stuffed into jumbo sized corn chips), Mexican food is actually completely genius. Castlemaine welcomes a new Mexicantina to the ‘hood. Arribar has opened at the Theatre Royal (Hargraves Street) and serves up loads of Mexican faves, Enchiladas, Fajitas, Quesadillas, and they’re also serving frozen margarita amazingness from the bar. (Most certainly a compulsory summer beverage.) Arribar’s tasty menu is up on Facebook (search arribarmexican) as well as pics, the latest specials and descriptions of the spicy deliciousness. For more info and bookings (advised) call 0423 249 397. Open Wed, Thurs, Sun, 5pm – 10pm and Friday and Saturday 5pm ‘til midnight. Yip Yip! Arribar!!

THERE’S something about a break away from home that increases the allure of fancy décor items. (This is one of life’s great mysteries, no one knows exactly why this occurs, but for some reason, shiny new homewares are completely irresistible when you’re miles from home.) If you go a little coo-coo at the sight of decorator perfection then boy do you need to know about the new store in town. Frances Pilley (28 Vincent Street, Daylesford) is laden with uniquely beautiful pieces of exceptional quality, sourced from around the globe. There are tiny treasures, like Indian printers’ blocks, one-off furniture items and luxurious skincare by Tade. They also stock reclaimed and upcycled pieces, wall art, deliciously decadent liquid soaps and unique jewellery. Soooo many perfect treats for yourself, or gifts for someone you really reeeally like. Frances Pilley is open 10am ‘til 5pm, 7 days a week. For more info pop in or phone: 5348 1429.

Hot and crosssounds like a bun-fightNOT LONG after you’ve wiped your mouth and patted your belly on Christmas Day, the first Easter buns are appearing in supermarkets. If the premature appearance of a crossed bun makes you a little cross yourself, fear not, there are still a few bakeries respecting traditional bun baking timetables, and RedBeard Bakery in Trentham is one of them. So why are we talking about this in February? – Well, before you get your dough in a twist, the Bearded ones are offering courses in bun baking prior to Easter, and their courses are sooo popular, we thought we’d give you the early heads up. The advanced sourdough masterclass will be held Sunday, March 17, and will include baking traditional Hot Cross Buns, and other organic sourdough delights. Numbers are limited to eight. Book now through Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (5424 1354) or go to redbeardbakery.com.au and click on ‘Special Events’ for all the info.

Picnic at Hanging RockBYO appetitePICNICS in these parts are gourmet affairs. Baskets are strainingly heavy, overloaded with delightful delicacies and delectable deliciousness – all locally grown and lovingly created by artisan producers and super-clever chefs (of course!)… But there’s one picnic held each year, where the baskets brought to the table are barren. People arrive in their droves with rumbling tummies and hollow hampers, a picnic blanket under their arms, and not much else. It’s the super popular The Age Harvest Picnic at Hanging Rock: the annual pilgrimage for lovers of fine food and wine. Here, there is no need to bring baskets laden with food upon which to munch, instead, everyone arrives to wander the stalls, and taste, purchase and feast on the latest treats, sip new vintages, and sample the incredible bounty of talented small producers from all over Victoria. This year the Harvest Picnic will be held at Hanging Rock on Sunday, February 24. Bringing a picnic blanket is a good idea, but if you really want to get comfy they’re hiring out beanbags for the day - love that idea - (you just need to book them in advance). There’ll be live music on stage all day, including Mr. James Reyne. The foodie fun is not limited to the grown ups among us, the kids will be well looked after with lots of roving entertainment, cupcake decorating competitions, (with loads of fab prizes to be won) as well as African drumming workshops, face-painting, an animal farm and lamington making. Sit back and watch cooking demos from Travis McAuley from Hellenic Republic, Justin Wise from The Point and more. No need to pack lunch, just load as many hungry friends as you can into the car and head to the Rock for a delicious day of grazing and fun! Pre-booked tickets are $25 Adult, $20 Conc, groups (10 or more) $20 ea, and under 15s free. (Tickets bought at the gate on the day will be $5 more). For more detailed info about the day, and links for ticket bookings go to www.harvestpicnic.com.au

Hurry up andChill Out already!

Teaching old ducksnew tricksIF YOU were ever in the market to buy a wooden duck where on earth would you start? It’s not like there are wooden duck shops on every corner… Lucky for you, we know a wooden duck shop. Ingeniously named Wooden Duck, this quirky Trentham store does indeed sell oodles of beautiful old duck decoys, and the kookiest collection of weird and wonderful, beautiful, rare and awesome industria, furniture, one off old bits and bobs, and pre-loved vintage pieces. Wooden Duck is having a sale this month on their flock of wooden decoy duckies. All the ducks need to find new homes, and they’d dearly love to shack up at your place, on a dresser or bookshelf (they might even dig a dip in the tub to remind them of their wild hunting days – and show that squeaky rubber duckie a thing or two). Wooden Duck is at 51-53 High Street Trentham, open weekends 10am-4pm. For more info call 5424 1054.

THE LONG weekend in March is always super exciting in Daylesford. It’s ChillOut time! The ChillOut Festival is the biggest and longest running country Queer Pride event in regional Australia. (True!) Each year ChillOut paints the town rainbow with a glittering program bursting with outstanding events, dance parties, shows, art, a carnival day, street parade, food, wine, shopping and ohh-sooo-much-more fun! Each year, ChillOut raises funds for a worthy cause. This year they’re helping Daylesford & District Food Aid raise vital funds for a much needed, permanent soup van for the region. (So if you see someone shaking a tin, dig deep!) The program is online now (chilloutfestival.com.au) and tickets to all events are on sale now through the website. Some events sell out quickly, so if you’re thinking about hitting town for ChillOut (Friday, March 8 ‘til Monday, March 11), jump online and get your tickets toot sweet!
