New tunes at the Old HepMia Dyson

Leaves... on a big jet planeSee Julia Stone before she

THE OLD HEP, (as we affectionately know her) is much loved by locals and visitors alike. She’s a decent, honest pub, true to her roots and delivers the goods night after night. Much the same can be said about Mia Dyson - a soulful songstress with stunning bluesy, whiskey tinged vocals. Mia has an ARIA award tucked under her belt (best be careful with that Mia, they’re pointy things…) and has supported the likes of Stevie Nicks and Eric Clapton. After three life-changing years in the States, she’s back with a new album ‘The Moment’. Mia is bringing her guitar and new tunes to the Old Hepburn Hotel, (236 Main Road), Friday, September 7, from 9pm. Tickets are $20 pre-sale, or $25 on the night (If there are any left… helloooo, best get your mitts on some toot-sweet)! Call the pub for more info: 5348 2207.

AHH JULIA STONE. Her exquisite voice both breaks and melts hearts. Julia (with her little bro Angus) have performed to much acclaim, (ARIA awards, #1 Triple J Hottest 100, that sort of stuff) and Julia (solo) has sung to adoring thousands – selling out shows in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, LA, New York and Sydney. As luck would have it, Julia has announced a small run of tour dates that includes us folk perched up here in Central Victoria, before she scoots off over to Europe to be fabulous and gorgeous and stuff next month.Julia Stone will play the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine) Thursday, September 6. Expect beautiful tunes from her latest album ‘By The Horns.’ Tickets are $40, (show only 8pm) or dinner and show $75 (7pm) For more info and bookings go to: theatreroyal.info or call: 5472 1196.

It’s a spring thingSomething in the water...

A LITTLE quiz to test your local knowledge:Which of these statements is true?1. Hepburn Springs earned its name due to a local spring manufacturing plant, that made tiny springs for those annoying clicky pens??2. The region is nick-named ‘Spa Country’ after the famous country music act The Spa Sisters hailing from Daylesford??3. Mineral water is A) Delicious, B) Super good for you C) More precious than gold. Ding ding! If you answered number 3 you are correct! In case you weren’t aware, you are deep in Spa Country. The area surrounding Daylesford, (in a rough 30k radius) contains most of Australia’s mineral springs. The delicious drinkable stuff around here is perfectly pure, naturally effervescent and icy cold. They all taste different too, depending on what underground alchemy takes place… Some are a bit stinky, (some people dig it) some are sweet and zingy, some taste like the imported stuff served in schmancy restaurants. But if you BYO cup, you can drink it fresh from the source. For free.Legend says that during the goldrush, mining caused several springs to dry up… people power saw the mining stop and the beautiful bubbles spill to the surface once more! Hoorah! There are too many springs to list here, but try Hepburn Springs Reserve for starters, (with several springs in one place). If Hepburn’s distinctive flavour isn’t exactly your cup of tea, try Sailors Falls (on the Ballan Road, 5kms out of town) – it tastes a bit less, um, mineral-y, plus you get to see the spekky waterfall hidden from the road (you’d never know it was there). Or heading towards Trentham, turn left past Lyonville and head down into the forest to Lyonville Spring. Not only is it picturesque with tall timbers and the creek winding by, the water is delish. For all the springs info go to The Daylesford Visitor Information Centre (Vincent Street) or mineralwater.vic.gov.au

What free range dreams are made ofBrrk Brrk Bergerk!

Cupcake 101Nan would be proudIN RECENT years the humble cupcake has had somewhat of a personality makeover and now shows up in many guises: couture cupcakes are stacked precipitously high as elegant wedding cakes, and bite-sized gourmet mouthfuls of pleasure are brown paper bagged, scoffed and quaffed with coffee. We’ve come a long way from the good ol’ days of fairy cakes and patty pans, and now it’s time to don your apron and roll up your sleeves… ‘coz cupcake classes are comin’ to town! Whip up a batch of your own cupcake awesomeness at Trentham Neighbourhood House (High Street) Saturday, September 8. Discover the secrets of cupcake creation, and share your baked bliss afterwards with a cuppa. For more information telephone TNH on: 5424 1354. Cost is $10, and everything is supplied.

IT’S THE romantic dream. Move to the country, get some chooks… (ok, maybe romantic is the wrong word… Practical? Permaculturally Correct? Oh you know what we mean)… But before you bring home Mrs Hennie Hen and her feathered brood of strutting mama cluckers, you need to know the basics. Saturday, September 8, Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) is hosting a beginner’s Chook Wise session. It will cover all you need to know to hit the ground clucking. Learn a little about the physiology of chooks, best nutrition, appropriate housing for your feathered friends, how to keep them safe from pests and diseases, as well as a little trouble shooting, breeding, and more. DelightCrafternoon

THERE’S crafty like a fox... and then there’s crafty like your girlfriend who screen-prints skirts and crochets mittens, has a shop on Etsy and blogs about knitting. Yeah, we’re talking about the latter. Threadneedle Craft (Shop 2, 52A Vincent Street, Daylesford – just near Coles) is hosting their annual Stitchery Retreat: Saturday September 8, and Sunday September 9, at Peppers Springs Retreat (124 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). If you crave a bit of craft inspiration, pop along to one day, or both. The guest stitchers this year are fabulously creative and promise to inspire! Saturday, Natalie Lymer of Cinderberry Stitches and Jodie Carleton of Ric Rac will take the session. They have created amazing designs for the day and two complete kits will be included in your goodie bag (ooooh! LOVE a goodie bag)! Both designers will be around all day to chat and stitch, answer questions, (if you can get over your tongue-tied-ness being in the presence of your craft heroes - *sigh*). In the afternoon it’s free stitching time, chat the arvo away, eat chocolate, listen to stories of stitches dropped and projects finished – there will also be special guests popping in to discuss the finer points of crochet, felting and knitting. Natalie will lead a quilting masterclass on Sunday, demonstrating the skills used to create her wonderful whimsical designs. In Sunday’s bag of tricks is a quilt top kit, with three colour variations available, (swoon) – feel free to bombard Natalie with tricky quilting questions, or just bathe in her quilt mastery and hope a little rubs off on you.Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat is catering the day, with lunches and indulgent morning and afternoon teas included. You’ll also walk away with a gift bag (more goodies!!) stuffed full with original patterns, and extra surprises.Book in a weekend of craftiness, indulgence and inspiration. For more info go to: threadneedle.com.au or contact Merrilyn Sims at Threadneedle Craft to secure your place: 5348 4277.

On gallery goodnessStocking up

IN KYNETON’S great sea of golden daffodils this month, there are many gardens to wander, but let’s face it, just because the calendar says winter’s over - it doesn’t mean the sun’s out non-stop ‘til April. Nuh-uh. If you find yourself in Kyneton in September, and the great outdoors ain’t lookin’ so great, pay a visit to Stockroom (98 Piper Street). The store is stocked with treasures for your home and your wardrobe, with artworks of all styles, as well as vintage and bespoke furniture, reclaimed and repurposed pieces and new, just begging to be given a new home. Try on clothing by fab designers, drool over hand crafted accessories, (actually don’t, wipe your mouth please), then cruise the galleries and take in three new exhibitions.Stockroom launches their latest exhibitions on Saturday, September 8, 4:30 till 7pm. There are three artists exhibiting in September:Tai Snaith has written and illustrated a new children’s book The Family Hour in Australia. Her clever and quirky story depicts the daily lives of 15 Australian native animals and their families. It’s fun, informative, wonderfully inclusive (depicting all types of families) and damn these animals have style. Yes, that IS a green Featherston lounge in the Quoll loungeroom. Her original watercolour, pencil and gouache works for the book will be on display, and as an extra special treat Tai will be reading from the book (for both parents and kids) at 10am Sunday, September 9.Kim Barter’s Papier is a series of paintings and drawings expressing an inner landscape. Kim sketched her works on various camping trips here and there (deserts, beaches, mountains, you name it) and transformed these memories of literal landscapes into vibrant expressive works, richly textured and free spirited. Ahh what a bit of fresh air does to us! Stefan Gevers’ Secondhand Serenade explores how an abandoned and forgotten place can still summon a powerful memory. His works focus on over looked details in the landscape, and the effect created by human intervention. The exhibitions will run until Sunday, October 7. For more information go to: stockroomkyneton.com or call 5422 3215.

Cold Chisels and Rolling StonesRocking it in Creswick

Melbourne Chamber OrchestraGet your highbrow onTHROUGHOUT the years the historic Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) has played host to everything from cake stalls to concerts, ballet to bush dancing, fancy-dress-book-balls to shiny-disco-balls, and on Sunday, September 9, at 2:30pm, the old hall is tuning up, and stepping into her finery for the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, as they present Bach and Bach. This concert contrasts Johann Sebastian’s ‘Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048’ with ‘A Flute Concerto in D minor H425’ by his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, (and features rising star flute soloist Taryn Richards on flute). The afternoon is gloriously tied up in strings with the Dvorak Quintet in G, op. 77 deliciously rounding out the performance. Tickets are available from eCasa (89 Vincent Street), Picnics and Peonies, (8 Howe Street) and Benjamin Bandicoot (31 Vincent Street) and are $45/$35 conc. Info at: mco.org.au.

SINCE pre-Neolithic times, us homo-sapien types have been into rocks. For millennia carving stone has been both a necessity and a hobby for those with opposable thumbs. Nowadays we don’t need to chisel a rock to fashion a knife with which to butter our bread, but there are still those among us who are passionate about creating objects of beauty from stone. David Barclay is one such modern human into stone carving. He insists that shaping stone is easier than you think, and offers a two day weekend workshop (Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9 at Creswick Railway Workshops, Lewers Street), where he’ll teach you how to carve a beautiful stone birdbath. A selection of basalt rocks will be available, or you can always BYO rock. Sessions will be held 10am - 4pm. Cost $100 / $85 conc. For more info and bookings contact Creswick Neighbourhood Centre, 5345 2356.

And after a particularly bitter winter we want to salute that big warm golden sun and let it shine in. (Actually, we want to go and give it a big hug, bugger the 30+). If you’re feeling you could use a little reboot, a big refresh and lotta rejuvenation, book yourself in to the Yoga and Heartsong retreat for a weekend to warm your heart, nourish your body and quieten your mind. The retreat will be held Friday, September 21, till Sunday, September 23, at the Hepburn Retreat Centre (9 Lone Pine Avenue, Hepburn Springs). Lisa Farinosi will be teaching Ghatastha yoga (dynamic Vinyasa), and music and sacred chants will be lead by Sun Hyland. Sun will be mastercheffing it up in the kitchen serving up delicious vegetarian meals. Lisa is an accomplished yoga teacher, having completed training in India in 2002, and most recently a three year intensive course with Swami Prahlad Nadu from the Yoga Arts Academy in Ghatastha yoga. Lisa currently teaches from her own studio in Melbourne, (Mukti Yoga in Preston) as well as in the CBD at Yoga Arts Academy and studio. Lisa’s sessions in Ghatastha yoga include techniques and sequences to develop energy channels and awaken your body and spirit. (And couldn’t we all use a bit of that? Oh yes indeedy). Sun will guide the group in sacred chants and heartsongs. A joyful and easy way to achieve yogic peace, clearing the mind and activating the breath. Sun has held Sacred Singing Circles and workshops in Melbourne, Byron Bay, Thailand and Bali. He has a passion for music and a strong commitment to Yoga as a way of life. Sun also runs New Earth Catering, and creates wonderful nourishing dishes with fresh organic ingredients that all the lucky yogis will enjoy at the retreat. It doesn’t matter whether you can sing or not, Sun’s heartsong sessions will uplift and soothe. The cost for the three day retreat is $290, and includes all meals, accommodation and workshops. For more info email Lisa at: [email protected] or go to muktiyoga.com.au

Thank your plucky starsThe banjos are a-comin’

Fall in love...With this cowgirlSADDLE UP! Lanie Lane is comin’ to town. Lanie’s unique and charming rockabilly style will fill the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street Castlemaine) Saturday, September 22, with country blues and a whole lot of sweet heart and soul. Her debut album ‘To the Horses’ nods its cowboy hat to early rock ‘n’ roll with tales of heartbreak, love, lust and the odd horsie or two.Rumour has it that Lanie will be saddling up as she tours her album, savouring her other great love (horse riding) and taking in the most beautiful parts of the country on horseback between gigs. Ahh a gal true to her great loves. The guitar, and her trusty steed. Call the Theatre Royal to book tickets: $25 show only from 8pm, $60 dinner and show from 7pm. 5472 1196.

GUILDFORD. It’s a wee town with a big tree and an old pub. And once a year the pluckers and twangers of the land converge upon Guildford to, well… pluck and twang. The Guildford Banjo Jamboree is a celebration of the banjo in all its forms, with an emphasis on American string band music, bluegrass, old timey, jugband, Hawaiian and blues. As well as a bit of contemporary, Celtic and jazz in there too. The 9th annual event will be held Friday, September 21 - Sunday September 23. See buskers, workshops, concerts, a Saturday night dance, and a bit of duelling (of course). Pitch a tent, sit ‘round the campfires, tell tales and play the banjo til the wee hours o’ the morn’. Perfect. For the full program, including more info on camping, performing, ticket prices and all things banjo go to: banjojamboree.org, or call 5473 4201.

Feeling dirty and seedy on aSunday morning... again

Party like a WombatYou know you want to...WOMBAT Hill House is the café perched high on top of Wombat Hill in the middle of Daylesford’s beautiful Botanic Gardens. And they’re celebrating their first birthday this month. Yippee! Let’s face it, one would be roughly seven in wombat years, so they have loads of party plans and fun stuff lined up for all of September. Saturday, September 1, the café will be open for breakfast and lunch as usual, with live music serenading the hill-top from 1 till 4pm. The hill will be alive with the sound of music (and wombats) each weekend this month with loads more live music and birthday fun. For what’s on go to the fairly funky website at: wombathillhouse.com.au, phone: 4373 0099, or find them on facebook for up to the minute Wombat party plans! The café is open Thursday to Monday, 9am till 4pm.

GUESS WHAT?! If you plant little seeds in the ground they grow into plants. Stop. It. And if that’s all you know about gardening, fret not! Help is at hand! The clever green-thumbed folk at The Diggers Club are hosting a Spring Seed Sowing workshop at the beautiful Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) Sunday, September 23 from 11am. Learn all the tips and tricks that’ll have your little seeds producing incredible flowers and abundant fresh vegies in no time! The Diggers have published a 72 page seed catalogue… In a gardener’s life this is even more exciting than a Christmas toy catalogue for kids. Spring seed sowing is a crazy-exciting time of year for a gardener, and it’s actually super easy to do. Dig a little deeper and learn more… call St Erth to book your place: 5368 6514. (Diggers members $20, non members $25).

Holidays...in CastlemaineA word (or two) on the school

THE CASTLEMAINE Children’s Literature Festival will be held next month, (October 1 – 7 at various locations in and around Castlemaine) – but with school holidays starting Saturday, September 22, the clever peeps at the festival committee have decided to run a pre-festival program, with a couple of days of fun with words for kids from four years of age. The Festival is a celebration of reading, writing and creativity for kids, young people and families. Pre-festival events include a zine workshop (we’ll be on the look out for pointers!) a poetry workshop, and an evening for adults who want to write for children.Tuesday, September 25, veteran Melbourne zine publisher, Luke Sinclair invites kids to make their own zine (a mini magazine) under his guidance. Luke is an artist who has published more than 500 issues of his current zine. (Sheesh)! He works at Sticky Institute (a Melbourne artist-run space) which is totally dedicated to zines. Luke will run the Get Sticky Zine Workshops for kids ages from 4 to 7 years: 10.30 till 11.30am, 8 to 12 years: 1.00 till 3pm and ages 12+ from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. The workshops will be held at Castlemaine Library (Barker Street) Free entry, bookings required: 5472 1458.Wednesday, September 26, Author and poet, Lorraine Marwood, is hosting a session called Talking Poetry. Using everyday speech and repetition, kids will create a fun poem they’ll love to read and perform. This free session is for kids ages 7 to 11, and will be held at the Castlemaine Library (Barker Street), 2pm – 3pm. Book at the library 5472 1458.The Castlemaine Word Mine is a goldmine for writers, readers and wordsmiths. On Wednesday, September 26, (7:45 till 8:45pm) Word Mine is hosting ‘So you Want to Write for Kids.’ This months’ panellists include accomplished authors/illustrators Sally Rippin, Martine Murray and Simmone Howell. They’ll be discussing their own work and answering questions about writing for children and young adults. Word Mine meets at the Anglican Church Hall, Cnr Kennedy and Forest streets. Delicious by natureDelicious by name

Bigger than ChristmasGrand Final Day

In July, Delicious Magazine held the national Delicious Produce Awards. This region was well represented and came home with a few more awards to prop up our cook books. Daylesford’s own Alla Wolf-Tasker was a judge on the national panel and is hosting a celebration dinner at Lake House (King Street, Daylesford), Saturday, September 29, from 7pm. As executive chef at Lake House, Alla will craft a menu using the finest produce from each of the categories judged at the awards, (Paddock, Dairy, Earth and Sea). Wines from Passing Clouds and Eastern Peake will be matched to the superb dishes created by her team. It all screams delicious to us! Tickets to this delectable event are $125pp. To reserve your seat at the table call Lake House on: 5348 3329 or visit lakehouse.com.au for more information.

IT’S THAT one day in September when you really don’t want to be invited to an all-expenses-paid wedding on a beach in Tahiti. That glorious day that really should be declared a public holiday, when everyone is united in footy (…and if you’re not – Tahiti’s looking good). Any pub worth its soggy bar towels will be playing the 2012 AFL Grand Final on a big screen, corner telly, or combo of both. Here is a list of Daylesford and Hepburn pubs that will definitely be screening the big game. A masterful masterclass(BYO cravat)

Take a hikeWombat styleIT’S A JUNGLE out there… Well, not exactly… Around here it’s more like native bushland, (with less tigers, and more wombats). Daylesford is surrounded by forest, criss-crossed with walking tracks. Each Friday the Daylesford Bushwalking Group meets outside the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street), and heads off to explore and hike through the wonderful bushland we have so close by. This friendly, active group invites all new participants to join in. Walks are generally three hours long, and vary in difficulty from easy to hard. If you’re feeling fit and ready for the challenge, pack a drink bottle and off you go! Remember to dress appropriately for the weather, (and being Spring, you’ll be layering your entire wardrobe, let’s face it). For more info, grab a program of walks from DNC, or call George Killingback 5348 3280. Cost: free.

DAYLESFORD’S Lake House is one of the finest restaurants in the country, headed up by executive chef Alla Wolf-Tasker. Alla has invited some of her friends (who just happen to be world class foodie wunderkind) to join her in hosting a Spring Masterclass at Lake House, Sunday, September 30. The Masterclass will immerse you in the culinary wizardry of: Andrew McConnell (Cumulus, Cutler & Co, Golden Fields, the Builders Arms and Moon Under Water), Katrina Kanetani (who has worked with Marco Pierre White, Raymond Blanc and Gordon Ramsay, and wowed diners with her artful desserts at Pier, and now Town), Daniel Wilson (of Huxtable fame) and Adam Marks from Bress Winery. Held from 10am till 4pm, the Masterclass includes all demos, tastings, lunch, refreshments, wine tasting and chefs’ notes to take home. $195 per person, bookings essential: 5348 3329. Patron Saint of skateboard and lattesDaylesford’s St Mel

AS A DJ, St Mel knows how to mix up a blend of stuff and make it work. So when she opened a store incorporating bikes and beats, wearable art and canvasses, shoes, great coffee and cheese-toasties, of course, the mix totally works. St Mel’s mix of mighty good things at her new digs is impressive. St Mel has her own band of followers from all over the place, and those in-the-know are passionate about all of the above stuff too, and travel from near and far to pay her a visit. The new store/café/gallery/workshop faces the (a-hem) *glorious* Daylesford Coles car park, (technically, the address is 5 Park Lane – which is notably the second best property in Monopoly, but in St Mel’s case, Mayfair (next door) happens to be Bakers Delight). Browse St Mel’s range of brand spankin’ new and brilliantly restored second-hand custom bikes. There are balance bikes for the wee tackers right through to serious road bikes for fans of lycra. If you’d prefer a coffee, a home made bickie (the Monte Carlos are out-of-this-world) and a bit of down time over the papers, well… take your time – there’s no rush at St Mel’s. Stay a while and peruse the homemade screen printed tees (made on the kitchen table – it’s all short run, unique stuff), and mad range of Vans, bike accessories, CDs from local bands, skateboards and completely delicious locally-made treats. This month St Mel Cyclery and Café is spinning some wheels, spinning some tunes, and spinning the ladle in the pot and dishing up delicious hot bowls of soup. Get your bike serviced, a latte and something for your wall. And mix it up a bit. Onya St Mel!St Mel Cyclery and Café is open 9am till 5pm everyday except Tuesdays. For more info on what’s on the walls and in the windows, drop in, or call St Mel on 0412 274 301, or visit her online store at stmeldesign.com.

r u r a l c o u t u r e

A colourful guide to the fabulously stylish and well designed life in Daylesford. BREATHE. RELAX. LAUGH. AND BREATHE AGAIN.

What’s Trending...Spa + BeautyTop 5 Spa Holiday trends of 2012

Country Massage in VogueI arrived at Leggatt House. The newest massage studio in town. Overlooking Daylesford Lake, Leggatt House was recently purchased by lifestyle enthusiast, artist and professional builder, Karen Waugh-Raphael. In the middle of restoring this historic country Manor, Karen has turned the front of house into a therapeutic Massage Studio.

Daylesford “Makeover Me”…Spa Hopping to fabulous!I floated out the door, waving goodbye to Andrea, Angela and Lisa, with promises of “I’ll write” and a handbag full with DayDay’s own miracle concoctions of body butter and moisturisers. Also some Jurlique Lavender shampoo and conditioner…they’re a wee summer holiday in Provence for your hair.

You’d think in such a precarious financial world that spa holidays would have fallen to the bottom of Must Have/Do lists. Quite the reverse actually.Holidays are trending as one of the treasured treats of stressed and weary recession survivors. Sort of like their “I Will Survive” remedy to heal past ills and lessen future pains.
