Warm Heartsin cold DaylesfordTHERE ARE few places colder than Daylesford in winter. Siberia perhaps? Maybe even Mawson in the Antarctic territories. Perhaps. A Daylesford winter can be all lovely and romantic and cosy, if you’re snug at home in front of the fire… but for many people in the region it’s tough out there this time of year. Daylesford and District Food Aid are asking for donations to help those members of our community sleeping rough this winter. New or good quality second hand items needed include; waterproof matches, tarps, socks, personal hygiene supplies, scarves, shoes, boots, blankets, sleeping bags, underwear, jumpers, and jackets. These items will be packed into hampers and given to those facing a bleak winter. Please donate at Daylesford and District Food Aid, at the rear of Daylesford Community Op Shop, 8 Mink Street (off East Street). For more info search Daylesford & District Food Aid on Facebook.

Wine, coffee and cheesewelcome to heaven

What’s your sideof the story?AUSSIES are naturals when it comes to storytelling. We love to share a good yarn. From a laugh at the bar to an OMG TMI status update, we can tell a tale, that’s for sure. The ABC has an initiative called ABC Open 500 Words. It’s a forum to share a personal take on a significant news, historical, or cultural event that you have experienced first hand. The Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria Street) is offering a session on blogging and digital storytelling, Saturday, June 1, with a focus on contributing to the ABC Open 500 Words project. In the workshop you will learn tips on writing a blog, selecting images, and how to share your story with ABC Open. The session will run 10:30am until 1pm, and it is free. To register, call the centre 5345 2356. To read other ABC Open 500 Word entries and for more info on this fascinating national project go to open.abc.net.au/projects/500-words-i-was-there-49lo8qj

HOW LUCKY we are to live in a place surrounded by fertile land, tended by clever farmers, harvesting world class produce, that is then made into some of the most delectable food and wine in Australia. There’s a brand new store in Daylesford, called Wine and the Country (1/97 Vincent Street) and they’re showcasing the best of the best of the local deliciousness. As the name suggests these guys specialise in local wines. You’re welcome to visit for a tasting, a glass, or share a bottle. They also do great coffee by Daylesford’s own Buffalo Girls (um… wine and coffee? Hold us back!) The shelves are laden with fab local produce, Stella’s breads, Istra Smallgoods, Goldfields Cheese, delicious bits from Tuki Trout Farm, preserves and other tastiness. Wine and the Country is now open Friday and Saturday 7am - late, Sunday 8am - 6pm, but full time soon. More info at wineandthecountry.com.au or call: 0458 617 025.

Strike while thecoffee is hotTHERE’S a new coffee and wine lounge/restaurant/live music venue in down-town Clunes. Lucky Strike braced themselves, slammed down a quick latte and threw open its door to the world on Booktown weekend… which (incase you’re unaware) is the biggest thing to hit Clunes since the miners went bananas in the gold rush. Phew! Fortunately their organic coffee beans and supercharged Jersey cow’s milk rocketed them through their wonderful launch weekend. And now with the grand opening a fond (recent) memory, the crazy cats at Lucky Strike (33 Fraser Street) have started doing brunch Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am. Let them pour for you that all important first coffee of the day (yes, you get that yummy Jersey milk too) the eggs are organic, the heirloom tomatoes are organic too… in fact, we’re pretty sure the whole team at Lucky Strike are organic. Something else a little spesh about this new kid on the block is their performance space. Out the back they have create a marvellous warm (we promise) venue for intimate gigs, and this month they have some fab live music in store for the lucky ones. Saturday, June 1, from 8pm, Truly Madly Deeply will dish up the jazz standards in an anything but standard way, Saturday, June 15, Latino supremos Los Locos will have you itching to jump out of your seat and bust out some moves as they play some wild Latin grooves, and Saturday, June 29, Louie and the Cocktail Shakers will have you shaken and stirred with their blend of blues, swing, soul and jive. If only those trying their luck in the dirt for a lump of gold back in the 1850s could see Clunes now. The time-worn streetscape is buzzing with a new energy, with eight permanent bookstores, organic brunches and vintage wares, (and still plenty more gold under the dirt we’re sure). Lucky Strike Lounge is open for Brunch and Lunch Monday, Friday - Sunday from 9am, and Dinner Friday - Sunday 6pm to late. For more information and reservations phone 5345 3308, or go to luckystrikelounge.com.au.

Mountain BottomThe view from

secret buffaloShhhh

WITH ALL respect, the beautiful town of Woodend could’ve been called Mountain Bottom. Sure, it’s at the end of the wood, so the name Woodend is cute, but it’s also at the bottom of Mount Macedon. Mountain Bottom, or Mount Bot (for short) would’ve been just as appropriate. (And makes us giggle… tee hee) (Sorry.) Magnificent Mt Macedon is home to The Mount Players, a really quite super and enthusiastic community theatre group. They have been performing within the region and on the mountain for 41 years(!) and this winter they are presenting The Threepenny Opera. (The original story of Mack the Knife, set in Victorian London). The season is on now, and runs until Sunday, June 23, at Mountview Theatre, 56 Smith Street, Macedon. Adult tickets $28, conc. $25 and kids $12. For more info about The Mount Players, their 2013 season and bookings go to themountplayers.com or phone 1300 463 224.

YOU KNOW how down in Melbs the good stuff happens off a hidden alleyway somewhere? It’s just the way Melbourne rolls. You have to sniff out the good stuff, and the cool kids are onto it welllll before the likes of… um, everyone else. Well here in the ‘hood of Dayles, the cool cats know where it’s at when it comes to coffee. Buffalo Girls. (4c Duke Street.) Vigen is a wiz with the beans, the blends, and behind the machine, and his Buffalo Soldier beans are getting quite the rep as being what the cool cats drink. (There’s Hey Leroy, DownTown, and one called Marmalade Cat. And wow, Ms Marmalade goes ME-OW!) Vig has the funk flowing though his veins, and is (hush-hush) hosting a new night: Jungle Boogie; Saturday, June 1, 8pm at Buffalo Girls. Expect lo-fi funk, old school vinyl, a night of soul with a speak easy vibe. Get outta the house for a boogie, you know where it’s at kids. (Be early, limited numbers.) Peace.

no hipsters allowedWooden Music Festival

ONE BAND = a gig. Two bands = a double bill, and three bands = a festival. (We all know that more than three bands usually involves camping and hipsters, and we’re not talking about that right now, so relax.) We’re talking about the Wooden Music Festival. A three band Sunday session (June 2) at the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). This mini-fest will feature Perch Creek Family Jug Band, Quarry Mountain Dead Rats and Max Savage. Yes there will be banjos, yes there will be chunky harmonies and double bass, and yes there will be bluegrassy, toe tappin’ foot stompin’ beer drinkin’ tunes. And jugs. Jugs of beer and jugs of the musical variety. Toot toot. The Wooden Music Fest kicks off at the very respectable time of 3pm, and ends at 8pm, so your very respectable self will still be feeling respectable come Monday morning. Ahh the Old Hep’s looking out you. For more info give them a buzz: 5348 2207.

ANYONE can dance. This statement is broadly true. However, it doesn’t take into account that some of us humans are genetically gifted with grace, poise, timing and an innate sense of rhythm, whilst others among us are genetically gifted with two left feet and shoes to match. Luckily, Glenn and Sue of Daylesford Dance are gifted dance instructors, and can teach (those with any number of feet) many styles of dance. From Wednesday, June 5, they are starting Swing Classes. (To be held at the Holy Cross hall (Daly Street) from 7:30pm-8:30pm.) The classes will be ongoing with a view to having you ready to swing your way across the dance floor at the upcoming Mood2Swing event (to be held later in the year). Absolute beginners are welcome, (BYO left and/or right feet) as are those with prior dancing experience. Lessons are $17.50 ($15 conc.) For more info and bookings call Daylesford Dance on 0400 669 200, or 5348 4532.

Gardens and landscapescaptured in charcoalIMAGINE the day when humans figured out how to light a fire. How do you think that day went? The conversations around the cave would’ve gone like this: “Would you like sushi or carpaccio tonight luv?” “Oh, neither thanks hun, I’ll have that luscious fillet of free range organic venison well done to a crunchy black crisp thanks.” The fact that our cave-person ancestors actually figured out how to light a fire without Jeff Probst handing over a nice big chunk of flint - complete with flashy smile - is a miracle. And once that fire was out, what better to do than poke around the charcoal with your hands and get nice and grubby… A burnt stick made a mighty fine marker, and before long Cro-Magnon folk were tagging their caves with scribbles, stencils and thought provoking political statements, pre-dating Banksy by 32,000 years.Charcoal is still the preferred medium of thousands of artists around the globe. Tiffany Titshall is one such artist who smudges, blends and expertly pushes her charcoal to the limit. Inspired by the landscape and climate of Central Victoria, Tiffany has produced a body of work entitled Nature’s Folly. These works delve into the architecture of gardens, and explore our desire to create monuments and landscapes within our landscape. The works range from sharply structured images, through to dreamy soft focus landscapes, defining the contrast between the cultivated and tamed gardens we create and the ravaged, drought stricken land within this region; Tiffany’s works made all the more poignant by her choice of using charcoal as her preferred medium. The pieces are haunting, honest and beautifully capture the essence and diversity of Central Victoria. The exhibition Nature’s Folly opens Saturday, June 1, at 2pm, at Central Goldfield’s Art Gallery (at the Old Fire Station, Neill Street Maryborough). The exhibition will run until July 14. The Gallery is open Thursday to Sunday 10am ‘til 4pm. For more info phone 5460 4588 or go to tiffanytitshall.com

Pea soup fogand super pea soup SALAD days are over! BRING ON THE SOUP! Jaqi at Fair’s Fair (1 Knox St opp. The Farmers Arms Hotel) loves her soup and is sharing her fave recipes with us this winter, ladling take away cups with delicious soups and serving them with chunky pane di casa bread to go. Jaqi usually has several pots bubbling away at once, all vegetarian (with gluten free options too) like curried sweet potato and apple served with sour cream and parsley, or minty pea, asparagus and lentil, or creamy carrot and ginger served with sour cream and dill. The soup kitchen has embraced the pay-it-forward ethic of the Suspended Coffee movement, where you ‘buy’ a coffee for someone to redeem in the future, only Jaqi is doing it with soup. Buy a cup for yourself, and one for someone to enjoy when they need it most. Soup is $5, with bread $6. Soup’s on Wednesday to Sunday 11am-4pm. For what’s cookin’ search Jaqi Mudge Shamanic Healing on Facebook.

Thirteenlucky for us...NO WONDER 13 is an unlucky number… It’s when you become a teenager. And there’s naught too lucky about that. You’re expected to be a kid but act like an adult, not allowed to act like an actual adult, but told to grow up if you act like a kid. Deal with that and pimples and school pressures/ BFs/GFs/BFFs/bonkers hormones/friend dramas/homework/credit running out on your phone etc etc… It’s hard being 13. But… being thirteen is also worth celebrating… in fact, there’s one 13 year old in Hepburn Springs that’s about to celebrate their birthday HARD! The Performance Night at the Old Hepburn Hotel is turning 13 years old Friday, June 7. Back in 2000 the night was started as a space for local performers to get up and show us what they’ve got… and boy has some talent graced the stage in that time. Over 800 bands and performers from all over Victoria and Australia, and some international guests, have taken to the Old Hep stage on performance night. Some of these nervous beginners have grown into well-loved (and established) musos (think Mia Dyson and Declan Sykes to name a couple). Performance Night usually costs a couple of coins to get in (gold ones, don’t be tight) and the ‘winner’ as judged by the applause, gets the loot. This humble concept has grown into a musical institution over the years… and to celebrate the big 1-3 Performance Night will welcome Bianca Berto, Anthony Petrucci, Navaja Negra, KGB Klezmer, Kaisha, Eamon Harraghy and Pugsley Buzzard to the stage for a night of fantastic live music and a celebration of what this great night has become (aww… it’s all growed up now! There will be no open stage on birthday night, instead happy (birthday) hour from 5-6pm, and music from 6pm ‘til midnight. Entry is $2. Performance Night will be back and open to all, (next month) on the first Friday of each month. (And hopefully for another 13 years!) For a 20 minute set phone Nel Staite 0437 628 911, or just rock up on the night for a five minute open stage. The Old Hep is at 236 Main Road Hepburn Springs. For more info call 5348 2207.

It’s Friday…we’re in loveLOVE Friday nights. There’s just something about tools-down time on a Friday afternoon that makes it more special than say a Wednesday afternoon, meh. Wednesday, you give us nothing. Friday nights gaze lovingly out the window and offer a knowing nod and a wink to that lovely blank slate of weekend rolled out waaay over the horizon. We at lost believe there really should be more Fridays in the week. Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) pop Friday nights up on a pedestal, and bands up on a stage. Each and every Friday they offer happy hour from 5pm-6pm, and great live music from 6pm… and the chance to embrace each moment of that Friday night feeling. Swing into the long weekend (Friday, June 7), with Daylesford three piece, Hot Dot and the Cool Squares. Entry is free. For more info on what else is coming up at the Glenlyon General Store in June call 5348 7922, or find them on Facebook.

Old as the hills and market fresh

High Teafit for a QueenHIGH TEA is a bit spesh isn’t it? A tower of teeny treats and a long afternoon cuppa is just a bit too delightful. Whilst sipping with pinkie poised, one might wonder what the Queen might be up to on such a splendid day: watching the polo? Scruffing the Royal Corgis on the Royal Porch? Or perhaps partaking in some cucumber sandwiches herself? Hmmm… The Queen’s Birthday long weekend seems an appropriate time to partake in the indulgent ritual of High Tea. Grange Bellinzona (77 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) offers High Tea each Saturday, in four sittings on the hour, 12pm ‘til 4pm. The $39 standard High Tea is a tower of honey and date scones with double cream, dainty sandwiches, and delicious patisserie treats, with pots of tea, or coffee. The (appropriately named) Royal High Tea ($49) comes with a glass of bubbles. Oh well, if One must! Happy birthday Ma’am. More info and bookings: 5348 2271.

GUILDFORD is a teeny hamlet on the Midland Hwy between Daylesford and Castlemaine. They have a fab general store, an old-as-the-hills pub (possibly older) and a big tree, that is closer in age to the hills, than the pub. (No, really, it’s a 500+ year old River Red Gum listed on the National Trust’s register of significant trees, and how it survived the gold rush without being used for firewood is a miracle. Turn at the General Store, it’s at the end of the street. It’s really big, go give it a hug.) Guildford holds a Regional Produce Market once a quarter. This community market is held at the Public Hall (Fryers Road) and is a really big deal in a really small village. Saturday, June 8, the hall will be fully loaded up with the freshest local produce, (including organic and bio dynamic), local wines, olive oil, baked goods, preserves, pickles, jams and hand made creations. Doors open at 9am. For more info phone: 0408 606 561.

OMG EVOOopen day nomsOLIVE OIL just doesn’t grow on trees you know… Oh no hang on, that’s money… Actually… the oil of the delicious green fruit does grow on trees, (sort of, with a bit of shmooshing) and those trees happen to grow very well around here. Kyneton Olive Oil is a local business producing some of the finest olive oils in the country. And on the Queen’s birthday long weekend (Saturday, June 8 ‘til Monday, June 10,) they’re opening their doors for all to come and sample that shmooshed olivey goodness.Taste their delicious new season products, including table olives, tapinades, Nonna’s own crushed olives, and their super fresh extra virgin olive oil varieties. Their infused oils are a magical mix of flavours. When the olives are crushed in the press they place the fresh infusing ingredients in there at the same time. Tasty stuff like garlic, herbs, chili, basil, ginger and lemon. The result is a whole world of mouth watering, lip smacking drizzling to be done… Buonissimo! They also produce a Gourmet extra virgin olive oil, an Organic olive oil and a Family Selection extra virgin olive oil, which is quite literally tasted, tweaked, and judged by members of the family to be the best it can be before bottling it up. Their family selection EVOO is so luscious it has even won some pretty spesh awards; oh, y’know, just a gold medal and best-in-class trophy at the Australian Olive Association’s national awards… Hooray for locally grown awesomeness! Kyneton Olive Oil is also used by many of the noted chefs in the region, and you’ll find it on the shelves alongside other divine gourmet goodies in boutique foodie stores everywhere. If you love a bit of the good oil, take the drive to Kyneton Olive Oil and get dipping, tasting and buying! The annual open weekend is open 10am ‘til 4pm each day. There’ll be tours, tastings, (including local wines) market stalls, and lunch and refreshments served throughout the day. Set the sat nav to 2090 Kyneton-Heathcote Road Barfold, or for directions phone Sam: 0419 191 192, or 5423 4240. More info at kynetonoliveoil.com.au

Eleven days off…oh yes indeedJUNE is one of those extra special months where you score five weekends. Sometimes you only get four, sometimes four and a half. But back in Roman times when they were working out the calendars for the future of all humanity, they gazed forward to the year 2013 AD and noted that we’d need five big ones this month. This glorious month of June starts on a Saturday and ends on a Sunday, with a lovely great long weekend in the middle. It could very well be the perfect month. Thanks Romans. With five weekends crammed into 30 days, surely you must have some fun times planned? Surely? Well if you’re unsure how to spend your Sundays in June, The Perfect Drop (5 Howe Street Daylesford) has got it sorted. Sunday nights The Perfect Drop rolls out The Cotton Club. A live music night, the feel is a sophisticated swing-jazzy vibe, with a bit of blues and cabaret thrown in there for good measure, as well as vintage DJs spinning some retro tunes in there too. Each Cotton Club Sunday night happy hour’s on from 7pm ‘til 8pm. Get cosy fireside with a cocktail (two for one during happy hour… uh-huh…) they also have a bar menu on Cotton Club nights. This stellar month of five weekends means there are five Cotton Club nights at the ‘Drop. And it all kicks off Sunday June 2, with duo Moodswing. The following Sunday (June 9, it’s the long weekend) DJ Sass spices things up, spinning a bit of early jazz, blues and Latin, a few soulful divas, and some spicy mambo to boot. Sunday, June 16, Bella Frisky turn on a bit of gypsy swing, a few operatic arias whilst wielding glockenspiels and ukeleles. Awesome. Faves around here Truly Madly Deeply play their sparkling blend of cruisy grooves Sunday, June 23, and to round out this magic month of weekends The Norm Grey Trio perform classic jazz standards to ease you out of June and into July… (which, FYI, is a relatively dull looking month with only four weekends). For more info on The Cotton Club call Nel Staite 0437 628 911 or find Perfect Drop Wine & Food Lounge on Facebook.

The life and times

(thanks for the day off)Happy Birthday Lizzie

of a musical geniusJOHANN Sebastian Bach. You’ve heard of him right? In fact, you probably butchered some of his greatest works on the recorder in primary school. This year the Woodend Winter Arts Festival (see page 18) features many concerts of his finest work performed by some of Australia’s most revered musicians. (No recorders we promise.) But what of the man himself? John O’Donnell is presenting a history of Bach’s fascinating life – from an orphan at 10, to composing and working for princes by age 23, what happened after his death, and the legacy of his music. Find out more about the man who is regarded by millions as the greatest composer of all time. The presentation will be held Saturday, June 8, 2:30-3:30pm (Tickets $20, conc. $18) at the Woodend Community Centre. (Corner Forest Street and High Street). For more info and bookings go to their website: woodendwinterartsfestival.com.au or call 0447 570 327.

THERE ARE some perks to living in a monarchy, eg: the long weekend in June. We love that HRH’s b’day is actually April 21, but the powers-that-be decided to spread the public hols throughout the year to give us a bonus day off in the depths of winter. Cheers to you guys and happy belated birthday Your Majesty. We intend on celebrating for you at Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) on Sat, June 8. Milk & 2 Sugars are presenting brilliant Melbourne band Saskwatch (which is particularly fun to say after one too many birthday sherries). Saskwatch are heading off to the UK’s Glastonbury Festival, (yes, wow,) and doing a few gigs to say see-ya before they leave. Think crazy electric horns and soulful R&B. It’s heartfelt, luscious, and AH-MAZING live. DJs Chris Gill, Dusty Stylus and MellyMel will also be spinning tunes ‘til late. Tix $25 presale or $30 at the door. (Doors open 8pm). THERE ARE many breeds of Outdoorsy Type Folk. Some like to ride bikes. Others prefer an earnest bush walk. And some like a little rogaining map-and-compass-treasure-hunt action… Combine those types of Outdoorsy-Types, with a blend of bikes, bush, maps, mud and a dash of rogaining thrown in there, and you have a formula for an event called the Cyclic Navigator. In a nutshell it’s pretty much orienteering on mountain bikes whilst hunting for checkpoints in the bush. Every second year the Cyclic Navigator event is held in the Wombat Forest. And on the ‘off’ year, (that’d be this year folks) they host a mini version of the event. The bi-Cyclic Navigator will be held Monday, June 10. It’s a sweet introduction to the main event next year, run in half the time, on half the map area, but with just as many cakes at the end. Yes. This event ends in cake. Always. Which is, (we think) completely awesome. There will be two events held on the public holiday, a three hour Mini Classic, and a 90 minute adventure ride. There is a serious amount of peddling, puffing, map reading, fresh forest air and fun to be had at a Cyclic Navigator event. There are spot prizes for competitors, and 30(ish) ‘control’ points to discover throughout the day. If you wish to take a breather at a control point, this year they’ll make a couple of them at one or two of Daylesford’s best cafes - so you can slam down a fine organic single origin macchiato to focus your map reading skills before heading back out there. The event kicks off at 11am from Jubilee Lake Holiday Park oval. (151 Jubilee Lake Road). Entries are open until Friday, June 7, and are available to solo Junior, Open and Veteran competitors. Register before the event online, or on the day (if not sold out) from 9:30am. You will be issued with a map produced especially for this event. The map is waterproof and foldable which means you can easily wipe off the mud and cake afterwards. For detailed information on the event go to mapsport.com.au/cyclic-navigator

Lock up your razorsThe Beards are coming

Designer gumbootsand bespoke potatoesFARMERS’ Markets in winter are a treat. Even the people-watching is fun. Locals wrapped in hand knitted cosiness, cheeks slapped red with cold, carrying baskets, cups of steaming fairtrade organic something and wearing designer gumboots hoiked up high and smeared with local earth; farmers’ market shoppers look the epitome of country winter chic. Each month the Trentham Farmers’ Market is held on the third Saturday of the month. (This month Saturday, June 15, 9am – 1pm.) Expect local spuds, and bread, expect bickies and treats, expect bottled, pickled, cured and marinated tasty bits, expect wine and flowers, and expect the freshest local fruit and veg from the region. Expect to fill your basket with deliciousness. (Dress: A/W 2013 country couture). The Trentham Farmers’ Market is held at Trentham Town Square (Corner High Street and Cosmo Road). More info at farmersmarkets.org.au.

LADIES and gentlemen (particularly gentlemen) it is officially beard weather. The growing of facial hair this time of year is to be encouraged. Especially around here, where the mercury is scared of heights and rarely climbs higher than 10 degrees. Beards not only look rugged, manly and bush-ranger-y, they also double as a handy balaclava on frosty winter days. Grow it long enough it doubles as a scarf, or shrug if you’re lucky. Adelaide band The Beards understand the glory of the hairy face and are rolling out their First World Tour to promote the benefits of facial hair. This tour will take in many countries that promote the use of razors, and they intend to put a stop to such anti-beard behavior. Fortunately Castlemaine has a high density of bearded folk, so their message will not be lost on the crowd. See them at The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street) Fri, June 14. Tickets $26, dinner and show $61. Info and bookings: 5472 1196

three shades of bluesPainting the Savoia

LOVE makes the world go ‘round. That is love, and coffee. AND live music. And cheese toasties. Oh, blah blah, yes, and the gravitational pull of our sun within our solar system. But mostly, it’s live music. And our world started spinning just a little bit faster recently with the announcement that regular Saturday night live music is returning once more to the Savoia Hotel (69 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). Hoorah! First up, Saturday, June 15, is Navaja Negra, the barest swampiest stripped-back blues out. This mad blues and beat duo just play drums and guitar. But by their huge sound you’d swear there was a full band on stage. And they stand up there defying you to sit still, with their dirty old blues stirring something that’ll get more than just your toes tapping. Navaja Negra play loads of old fave blues tunes through to reworked soul versions of RUN DMC. Strap your dancing shoes on and watch out Savoia… we’re on our way. The following weekend Saturday, June 22, Callum and the Good Ole Boys will deliver their own style of dynamic blues tunes, complete with county harmonies with a splash of psychedelia in there for good measure.Saturday, June 29, John Chamberlain will hit the stage to let rip his brand of blues. Acoustic and electric, a bit of gospel, a bit of Chicago style, warm, soulful, with a tinge of Ballarat swamplands madness in there as well. For more info on who’s playing at the Savoia each and every Saturday night now (yay!) check out their Facebook page (search: Savoia Hotel) or give them a buzz: 5348 2314.

Witches, words and other worldly wondersCENTRAL Victoria is studded with villages. Many of these villages are creative havens. Artists of all genres, from the performing arts to the visual arts have plugged into the creative energy that has flowed so freely ‘round here for eons. The village of Castlemaine is well and truly plugged into the creative energy feed and is sharing their fertile creative ground with a gathering called ‘The Winter Village Festival’. This travelling festival, has popped up everywhere from Hobart, to Fitzroy, to our nation’s capital. It is sort-of like an old-time travelling carnival, or a magical circus-y gypsy wedding. It’s a crazy, inclusive, exciting community gathering. A series of highly decorated quirky theatre spaces will be set up (think: tents, busses, caravans etc) at Victory Park (cnr Pyrenees Hwy and Barker Sts) and once you enter it feels like you’ve crossed over into a fantastical artist’s party. The Winter Village is a celebration of old fashioned theatrical storytelling, and being that it’s winter, it will also feature many old world vendors selling traditional winter fare: munch on roasted chestnuts, there’ll be witches over cauldrons of bubbling spiced apple juice (squeezed by a bike-powered-juicer no less), take hot soups from warm hearths, snack on steaming-hot sourdough donuts (yum) as you watch roving performers, and hear spooky tales of the other worldly. The Winter Village Festival opens at 5pm with a lantern parade, created by the children of Castlemaine. Once the parade concludes settle in for a shadow play of ‘The Wanting Monster’ performed by local artists. Wander around interactive bike people-powered sculptures created by artists from all over the country, warm your hands at The Village hearth, a central fire sculpture, and of course it wouldn’t be a festival without music; many local and community performers will take to the stage to recite, sing and play. This is a one night only affair, Saturday, June 22, 5pm ‘til 11:30pm. Entry to The Winter Village is free, and some shows within the festival cost $2. For more info go to thevillagefestival.com.au or phone 5473 4426.

Klezmaniacsgo crazy in Castlemaine

Les depths of wintercheer up buttercupLES MIS. We all feel a bit that way once winter officially arrives. Mis.Er.A.Ble. Sure a cheapie air-fare to the Gold Coast for an impromptu weekend away acts as a sweet vitamin D fix, and bringing home sand in your carry-on warms the heart for a week, but if you can’t do a Queensland Quickie, perhaps a couple of hours of movie escapism is in order. Barcaldine Country House in Musk offers luxurious accommodation, grand gardens and estate grown wines at their cellar door. They also regularly host movie nights with the Musk/Daylesford Film Society, and screen them in their cosy cellar. Tuesday, June 25, they are featuring Les Miserables starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. Tickets are $27.50 a head - including a glass of wine, dinner, and coffee, which will leave you feeling anything but miserable. The screening is at 7pm. For more information or bookings phone 5348 2741.

KLEZMANIA bears no relation to Tasmania. Nor Beatlemania. And it certainly has nothing to do with pyromania. Klezmania is Australia’s most popular and well regarded Klezmer band. (Not helping?) Klezmer is a style of Jewish music from Eastern Europe, and Klezmania sing these traditional folk tunes in both English and Yiddish. (Don’t worry if you’re not fluent in ancient Yiddish, as there are no subtitles on stage, they’ll give you a run down of the songs’ meanings before they perform them.) Klezmania are coming to the Theatre Royal Castlemaine (30 Hargraves Street) on Saturday, June 22. See them perform their brand of passionate and energetic Klezmer tunes. Tickets are $29 (show only, from 8pm) or $64 (dinner and show, from 7pm). For more information about the band visit their website klezmania.com.au, or call the Theatre Royal for more info and bookings 5472 1196.

and half price shoesCurried Scrabble

YOU KNOW what’s really great? When someone else cooks an awesome curry for you on a Friday night. And you know what else is pretty rad on a Friday night? Buying shoes. And you know what else? Scrabble. And some tunes, and friends, and skateboards. Starting the weekend with any of these things would be more than satisfactory. And with a combination of all of them… well there’s Friday night nirvana right there. For the uninitiated, there’s a teeny café/bike shop/skate gear store/gallery in Daylesford called St Mel Cyclery & Coffee. They’re tucked in that group of shops in the Coles car park. (Technically 5 Park Lane, however, the address sounds much schmancier than the actuality of the Coles car park, so, for ease of finding StMels, just head to Coles.) Mel and the crew make a great coffee, and they serve up a tasty toastie as well. And to add to the awesomeness they’ve started a low-key curry night on Fridays to make you love them just that little bit more. Feel free to bring your own take away container if you want to take the curry love home and dine on the couch in your trackies, (no judgment) or, bring pals and pull up a chair (you might need to BYO chair if it’s a busy night) and share a curry with buddies. There’s always a meat dish and a veg option and they’re served with rice, naan and a yummy yoghurt salady thingy. The Friday night menu is up on Facebook each Friday, (search St.Mel Cyclery & Coffee) and curry’s on from 6pm. (Get in early though, they’ve been known to sell out in half an hour.) If you’re bringing some pals, bring your scrabble or fave board-game along and make a night of it. If you’re lucky someone will bring a guitar and there’ll be live tunes as well. Now, whilst you’re there pondering your triple letter scores and what you can make with the letters LAEEEEI, take a look at the mad range of sneakers on the walls. This month if you buy a pair of Vans sneakers, Mel will sell you another one at half price. Sweet. So even if you have no luck on the board, you’ll still have winning feet… and a happy belly.

Relax,you’re in Daylesford

Got ourselves in a FLAP!AT LOST we are quite fond of the exclamation point. However, we try to keep a lid on our punctuation perkiness and limit their use for appropriate situations, (for fear of sounding like a crazy hard-sell vacuum cleaner commercial). So we sit on our hands (makes it tricky to type) and twitch a little when it comes to an exciting point, just to quash our sometimes over-enthusiastic use of the little line with the dot underneath. Imagine our repressed punctuation delight when we discovered that the band FLAP! (Yes! That ! is on the end of the band name!) is coming to Castlemaine!! (Calls for a double). Flap! are a fun, up-tempo Melbourne five piece, featuring brass, double bass, and a bit o’ banjo that conjures a whole lotta dancing wherever they play. See Flap! at the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street) Saturday, June 29. Tickets are $25 show only (8pm) or $60 dinner and show. (7pm) More info and bookings call 5472 1196!

DAYLESFORD is famous for its day spas. Stressed and world-weary folk from all over the country roll into town to indulge and relax. In fact, we hear that council was once considering renaming the town Dayspasford. (The previous statement may not be entirely true.) In a town well known for pampering, indulgence and relaxation, EKO Skin Care Spa has just opened its doors. You’ll find EKO at the back of the beautiful Raglan building (next to Kazuki’s) at 1 Camp Street Daylesford. The historic stables have been rejuvenated into a fresh and calming space with two lovely locals at the helm (Emma and Angelina) ready to polish and pluck, soothe and scrub, massage and manicure, relax and renew. Their heavenly treatments include an opening special: A one hour facial for $80, followed by a complimentary ½ hour massage. Bliss! EKO is open 7 days: For opening hours and bookings call 0429 681 030 or search Facebook (EKO Skin. Care. Spa.)
