Alpha Upsilon welcomes 42 new brothers at January Initiation At its regular initiation on January 23-24, 2004, forty-two

new members were inducted into full membership in Kappa Alpha Order. The group is pictured above just after the comple-tion of the ceremonies on Saturday, January 24.

With the exception of the original group of sixty who were initiated in 2001 when the Chapter was re-chartered, it is likely that this is the largest single group ever initiated at one time by Alpha Upsilon. And in 2001 there were four initiation teams — one each from ΑΜ, ΒΤ, ΓΖ and ∆Β Chapters — but this time all forty-two were initiated by one single team from ΑΥ.

Leading up to the initiation, former Province Commander and member of the Alumni Advisory Committee, Dick Wilson, spent the week — starting the previous Sunday — preparing the new members for their initiation.

In doing so he was assisted by numerous speakers. All living Province Commanders of Irwin Province participated in the pre-initiation week instruction:

On Sunday night, Former Province Commander Larry Nesbit spoke on the topic “What does God have to do with it?” and Sam Cole, now in med-school in Jackson, who was the first person to sign up for the “new” Alpha Upsilon in 2000 spoke on how he became a KA.

Monday featured the “Obligations of a Gentleman” to those not so fortunate, and the topic was ably

covered by Hon. Paul Artman, former Mayor of Greenville, and former Province Commander and Gray Wiggers, of Jackson. Also Will Bardwell, who graduated last year, came back to speak on his experience in the original group that established the Chapter in 2000-2001.

On Tuesday, Jake Dickerson, Mike Carr, Paxton Little, Stuart Saunders & Tom Taff, all members of the original “new” chapter addressed two questions: “What do you take with you from the Chapter?” and “Was it worth the struggle?” You had to be there to understand how emphatically they answered “yes” to that second question!

Wednesday saw former Colonel Rebel Ford Williams and Brooks Boylan, also members of the original “new” chapter discussing “When a Gentleman does his duty, what else is left?”

— who had seemed somewhat blasé on Sunday night — were “chomping” at the bit to be initiated!

And they were well initiated by a team consisting of John Eric Hester, No. I, Beau Patrick, No. II, Justin Phillips, No. III, Zach Finch, No. VIII, Jay Wood, No. IX, with assistance from Tyler Williams, Skip Langley, David Abide, Nathan Scammerhorn, Kyle Sinclair, Mark Levy, Andrew Levy, Mark Grow, Paul Pless, Matt Miller and Chris Holder.

Following Initiation on Saturday, there was the Traditional Initiation Banquet honoring the New Brothers. It was at the Downtown Grill in Oxford and was well attended by members of the Chapter and their dates, parents of the new initiates and alumni of the Chapter. About 350 people enjoyed the evening!

The Model Pledge Award was

presented to Tom DeBray of Montgomery, AL, by No. II Beau Patrick.

The Skip Cline Award and Scholarship was won by Rob Cannon (Brandon). This award is given each year to a freshman in memory of Harry “Skip” Cline who was an outstanding pledge in 1987, but who died after an injury suffered in a fall. A scholarship fund was set up to perpetuate his memory. We are proud to have this continuing association with Brother Cline.

Beau also presented the Model Initiate Awards to Ross Quinn (Memphis), Brian Rayburn (Chatanooga) and Jason Vassar (Pontotoc) — pictured below.

The Big Brother-Little Brother Scholarship Award (for the highest combined grade point average) went to Active Jimbo Moss (Jackson) and Ne Initiate Thomas Woods (Ackerman).

Awards to Active Members. Dick Wilson, the Master of Ceremonies for the Banquet, presented the Model Active Award to John Eric Hester, No. I. In doing so he commented that it might well be called, in this case, the “model man” award since John Eric had truly been a model in all respects for his chapter.

Then he had the privilege of presenting the Doug Stone Award which goes to the graduating senior who most nearly reflects the dreams and aspirations of Kappa Alpha. This year there was a tie, and the award was presented jointly to Beau Patrick, No. II, of New Orleans, LA and Stuart Saunders, former No. III and Province Undergraduate Chairman, from Charleston, SC.

All three of them have surely contributed to the making of KA at Ole Miss the great chapter it has become.

FINALLY, the 2003 Alumnus of the Year Award was given to the well deserving Jon Turner who has done so much to help the Chapter come back from zero members in 2000 to the largest KA Chapter in the Nation (at 160 members) — and it has to be on the short list of the strongest chapter also!

Thanks Jon for all you have done and all you do..

KA’S IN CHANCELLOR’S LEADERSHIP CLASS

Jon Turner recently wrote: When I attended this class's annual

luncheon in Jackson the other day, I noted that there were 5 KA's in the class of 75! And I'm guessing there are only 30-35 guys in the group. It's a prestigious freshman group com-posed mostly of Student Body Pres's and other strong high school leaders.

Nearly every ASB Pres. has come "through" this class since 1984..

Also, one of the "counselors" is a KA. KA’s who are members of the class are: : Thomas Woods, Ackerman, MS Brent Church, Memphis, TN Luke Koon, New Albany, MS Jason Vassar, Pontotoc, MS John Lyle Shaw, Jackson, TN Counselor: Sherrod Taylor, Leland, MS Previous members of the Chancellor’s

The Chapter Wins the Chancellor’s Cup for the Second Year!!

This year, your Alpha Upsilon chapter at Ole Miss is already making steps to another successful year.

As the spring semester closes, we have already received three out-standing awards through the University for the 2003-2004 school year.. At the annual Order of Omega Banquet, we took home the Diversity and the Philanthropy Awards. These awards are given to the entire Greek Community and both Fraternities and Sororities compete for them, and only one is to the winning Fraternity OR Sorority. .

The Diversity Award goes to the chapter who not only promotes diversity within, but also takes charge in instituting it throughout their chapter and the campus.

The Philanthropy Award is given to the chapter who excels in pro-viding the greatest monetary support for their charity.

This year, our chapter donated more than $60,000 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. KA Fight Night provided fighters to fight each other and even the spectators to fight the bad weather that was in the area. Through it all, Fight Night was a huge success.

Alpha Upsilon also took home the coveted Chancellor’s Cup for the second year in a row. The Cup is awarded to the fraternity at Ole Miss who not only achieves success, but exemplifies it. It is awarded based upon objective criteria — and the winner is generally considered the “best fraternity on campus” . . . on a campus with arguably the most com-petitive Greek System in America. We are honored and humbled to have received it for consecutive years and realize that it places a great obliga-tion on us to continue to hold high our standards so we might continue to exemplify the best in the Greek System at Ole Miss.

Thanks to all the support from our Alumni and to all the active mem-bers who made the success so far possible. We hope to inform you about more awards after NLI in Austin.

Wesley Clay, No. I, joyously brings the Chancellor’s Cup back to the KA House for a second year in a row!!

The Cup, along with two other awards, was won by the Chapter at

the Annual Order of Omega Banquet in early May.

“The House on the Hill” At the beginning of the school year, just

in time for rush, the Chapter received a sur-prise gift from noted Jackson artist, Miriam Weems, sister of long-time adviser, Dick Wilson.

It was a large painting of the KA House at night which she named, “The House on the Hill.” She gave it in honor of Dick, who had asked her to paint it for the Chapter as his Christmas present from her.

It now hangs over the mantle in the Liv-ing Room in a place of honor.

It adds both color and warmth to the Liv-ing Room and is greatly enhanced by the handsome frame which was contributed by Brothers Rob & Pat Neblett, of Neblett’s Frames in Clinton. Many thanks to Rob & Pat for their generous contribution.

The Painting has already formed the basis of the Homecoming T-Shirt and, no doubt, will be featured a great deal as a symbol of the

Chapter. Our thanks to Miriam Weems for her

generosity and for her willingness to share her talent.

There is a plaque which she specified to be mounted with the picture, and it reads:

Who’s Who is self explanatory. Phi Kappa Phi is an academic honorary

society. Lambda Sigma is a sophomore honorary

society dedicated to fostering leader-ship, scholarship, and fellowship. Induction is based on a personal in-terview.

Rebels Against Destructive Decisions student service organization

Ole Miss Ambassadors show people around campus that are new or that are taking a college day visit.

Chancellor’s Leadership Class is com-posed of seventy-five freshmen who are considered to be leaders of their entering class. Admission is based on high school achievements.

Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary society

solely for Accounting major students with at least 12 accounting hours and a 3.5 G.P.A..

Golden Key is non-profit international society stressing academic excellence and outstanding character.

Beta Gamma Sigma business and man-agement honorary society, which is the highest recognition an under-graduate business student can receive

National Society of Collegiate Scholars honorary organization for first and second year college students that emphasizes learning through commu-nity service.

Taylor Medal the number of these given cannot surpass 1% of the graduating class (41 were given this year)

Phi Theta Kappa this is to promote and encourage scholarship for two-year college students.

Alpha Lambda Delta honors academic achievement during a student’s first year in college.

Rho Epsilon honor society that acknowl-edges those in the field of real estate.

Student Programming Board organizes events around campus such as con-certs in the grove

Judicial Council student judicial council has jurisdiction over ASB constitu-tion.

Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board and Order of Omega are presumably known sufficiently not to require further explanation.

Fight Night Raises Record Amount for MDA!

Kappa Alpha Order’s annual Fight Night benefiting Muscular Dystrophy Association was a rousing success for 2004. The event was held once again at the Batesville Livestock Arena on March 19th and 20th. The chapter and Fight Night Committee began working on the event in the fall of 2003. Every new member and active member of the chapter sold $250 dollars in ads and some members went beyond that amount. Work began in the fall with the

selection of a Fight Night Committee which in-cluded; Beau Patrick as Chairman, Stuart Saun-ders, J.J. Waller, Adam King, David Chance, and new member Thomas Debray. Additionally a most valuable asset to the committee was Ms. Lee Ann Wiggins (former KA Rose) who chaired the sorority division. During the beginning of spring semester, the committee began working feverishly. Lee Ann coordinated with the nine sororities on cam-pus to ensure their partici-pation in the event. The

other committee members worked with the active chapter and communicated constantly with Muscular Dystrophy Association in Memphis.

The event consisted of two days of non-stop fighting. Members of the chapter boxed one another representing Ole Miss Sororities that “purchased” them. Aside from the KA boxing, numerous individuals entered the contest and the committee was forced to stop people from entering the contest due to the fact that we had time limitations. It appeared that all present enjoyed the fighting and social atmosphere in the arena, especially several KA alums who attended the event.

Kappa Alpha received One Hundred percent participation on behalf of all the brothers, and the committee itself do-nated over one hundred hours of community service in con-nection with the event.

The Fight Night Commit-tee and the chapter would like to extend a great deal of thanks to all the individuals who do-nated generously to Fight Night. You generosity allowed the chapter to raise $61,510 for the Muscular Dystrophy Asso-ciation and the chapter looks forward to raising that amount if not more at Fight Night 2005.

Chapter Retreat Late this spring the chapter held a retreat

to acclimate the active members for planning and developing goals to achieve in the upcom-ing year. The retreat included three speakers who conveyed a message of unity, leadership and conformity to the chivalric characteristics gentleman should uphold.

The Dean of Students, Sparky Reardon, told the brothers about effective leadership styles and how to properly manage ones time. Officer Thelma Currie of University Police Department commented on the appropriate way to conduct oneself when around the fairer sex. Also, Alumnus of the Year (2002) and Former No. I, Jimmy Rester once again spoke on how to have a successful rush.

Brother JJ Waller of New Port Richey, FL said, “This event really opened my eyes on how to act and what I need to do in order to be a successful person.” The retreat was wrapped up in only a few hours, but the lessons learned will obviously stay with our brothers for a lifetime.

Faculty/Student Luncheon In order to show appreciation and get to

know our faculty better, each member of Alpha Upsilon invited a favorite teacher for lunch this spring. The event proved to be a success as over forty professors or teachers came to eat lunch at the Johnson Commons.

The luncheon allowed both the faculty and students to get to know each other on a personal basis for one afternoon.

Brother Clay Deweese said this of the event, “I didn't know the turnout would be so great. It really gave me a chance to get to know the faculty and the kind of people it takes to be a part of this fine institution. Also, the teachers were able to interact with other faculty members and enjoy the camara-derie of our members.”

By Michael Murff, Alpha Upsilon remains among Ole Miss's most re-spected fraternities and is taking steps toward outdoing itself once again in the coming year. The election of new offi-cers, and the selection of new committees is leading the men of Alpha Upsilon to-ward a promising year.

Leading this year's officer roster is Wesley Clay (Columbus, MS) as No. I.. He is a psychology major and also served as a Rush Chairman last Fall. His ser-vices and leadership in the chapter and across campus have made him more than apt for his newly elected position.

Serving as this year's No. II is Ac-countancy major Ruffin Lowry (Jackson, MS). Ruffin has previously served as an Intramural and Rush Chair-man, as well as New Member Class President. This year he will be focusing his energies on New Member Education.

Paul Pless (Birmingham, AL) is this year’s No. III. He is an Accountancy ma-jor and previously served as the No. IV. Paul has been especially helpful as the webmaster of the Alpha Upsilon website. He is also involved with Reformed Uni-versity Fellowship.

Christopher Johnston (Jackson, MS ), psychology major, will be No. IV and will be responsible for submitting correspondence reports especially the

Ammen Award Application. Christopher attended the National Convention in Tampa and also worked as a Rush Chair-man the previous Fall.

At No. V is Will Kinney (Sumter, SC). Will has held the Social Chairman position the last two years and he will also be serving as the Risk Management Chair. He will be working with various alumni on issues pertaining to chapter policy.

Accountancy major, Tyler Williams (Brandon, Ms) is this year's No. VI and will be responsible for the chapter's fi-nances. In 2002, he attended the National Leadership Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tyler has previously served Kappa Alpha on many committees including the T-Shirt and Social com-mittees.

No VII, Jimbo Moss (Jackson, MS) is a General Engineering Major and will be responsible for enforcing the KA Laws and the Chapter Bylaws. Jimbo is a recipient of the Model Pledge Award and has participated in many activities in service to the Order. Prior to this year, he served the chapter through the Philan-thropy committee and represented Alpha Upsilon in the Inter Fraternity Council.

Zach Finch (Fredericksburg, VA), will be responsible for organization of the Chapter retreat and performing the duties

of the No. VIII position. Skip Langley (Macon, GA) will

serve as the No. IX. He has been an able and willing participant in producing the ritual. He will be the Chairman of the new Ritual Committee, dedicated to the chapter’s further education In the ritual.

All of the officers eagerly anticipate the coming of 2004 and the accomplish-ments, which are sure to follow soon thereafter. Zeal has struck the men of Kappa Alpha at Ole Miss and 2004 at Alpha Upsilon has the early makings of another banner year. Officers have al-ready begun work on next year's projects and events. Active members eagerly an-ticipate committee selection, while new members awaiting initiation readily await their initiation to become a part of the excitement.

This will certainly be another year to build on past successes. With the two consecutive Chancellor’s Cups, two Am-men Awards and the Marshall Award achieved, this chapter will continue to set its standard higher. The Marshall is awarded to the top one, two or three KA chapters nationally.

It is a fundamental tenet of Alpha Upsilon that, "excellence is our aim" and therefore, the Marshall is once again well within our grasp this summer in Austin!

Fall Rush at Ole Miss Rec’s Needed

Fall Rush at Ole Miss has been set for

September 19-26, 2004, with bid day being September 27th.

It is not too early to begin sending recom-mendations to the Chapter to let us know of worthy young men who would be good candi-dates to carry on the Kappa Alpha tradition at Ole Miss. Christopher Johnston is the Rush Chairman and he is ably assisted by a Co-Rush Chairman, Daniel McFatter, and several assis-tants. Send your recommendations to:

Improvements Continue at the KA House This summer, the Chapter and House Corporation have planned several

projects to improve the KA House. The dining room will be expanded to twice it's current size, seating 200

people for meals. Above the extended area of the dining room there will be an open air — but covered — area which should enhance social gatherings.

Directly above the dining room (in what was originally the Chapter Room) a Common Room will be provided to provide an informal area for the members to bond between their ardu-ous class schedules!

Construction, being headed up by alumnus and House Corporation Offi-cer Lee Hawkins will begin on Mon-day, May 10th. It is scheduled for completion by August 15th.

The Common Room and bal-cony will be both functional and im-pressive, and will greatly improve an already excellent house — many thanks to the loyal alums who have donated so generously to the Cam-paign for KA.

Construction work on the new addition got under way on May 15!

ALPHA UPSILON WELCOMES FIFTY-NINE NEW MEMBERS!

Pictured above are the Fifty-Nine (or most of them, anyway) New Members that Alpha Upsilon welcomed upon the conclusion of Rush in October 2003. After just four Rush Seasons, our Chapter has not only been recognized as the “best” in the Order, but has also become the biggest! Our total membership of Active and New Members upon the conclusion of Rush was 169.

We did not set out to be the biggest: It just happened. Serving this many men at supper is a real challenge! But with the newly refur-bished kitchen from last year, it is a challenge we are able to surmount and it is a good challenge to have! By the fall of 2004, it is altogether possible we may have close to 200 members.

From the group pictured above, forty-one were initiated in January — and one special initiate: Ken Glenn whose son, Ben, is in the Chap-ter. The newly initiated members are listed below!

Annual KA Blood Drive Hosted Large Crowd, Big Success

By: Ben Mathews February 24th & 25th, 2004 – Members from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta and Chi Omega Sororities joined the men of Kappa Alpha Order for yet another successful blood drive this past spring semester. Over 70 people showed up over a two-day period to give more than 100 pints of blood in the ever-popular “Mississippi Blood Van” that was respectfully parked in front of the Union. After all was over, the staff of Mississippi Blood Services informed us that the crowd was among one of the best they’ve ever had here on campus. During the peak hours of operation, the average waiting time was well over an hour. We would like to thank Mississippi Blood Services, all who participated and gave blood, as well as the Chi-O’s, Delta’s, and Kappa’s for their help and support. We look forward to having the same results or better next year

KA’s and ∆Γ’s Sponsor Easter Egg Hunt

This year the men of Kappa Alpha engaged in an Easter egg hunt for Willie Price Nursery School with the sisters of Delta Gamma. These children were able to search for many colorful Easter eggs, as brother Daniel McFatter was dressed up as the Easter Bunny. The event took place in The Grove and over 1500 eggs were hidden for the children to find. The eggs were cooked!

The hunt was a success over all, but one of the four year old polka dot ponies commented on how frightening and rabid the bunny costume appeared. Brother McFatter commented, “It was the only costume they had in stock.”

Nonetheless he did an outstanding job in bringing the chil-dren of Willie Price a Happy Easter.

Delta Gamma Anchor Splash Last fall, the new members of the Alpha Upsilon chapter

participated in Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash, which supports a charity of Delta Gamma’s choice. For the

second year in a row and the third of the last four years, the men of Kappa Alpha Order reigned victorious over pledge classes from all other campus fraternities. The

new members participated in various activities through-out the week including many swimming events, where the new members were able to display their dominance. Lee Mize, a member of the 2003 pledge class, said “this event

was a good building block for success in the years to come.” In the past four years, a new standard has been set for each entering pledge class, and each new class

continues to raise this bar of excellence. Pictured above are the members of the Synchonized

Swimming Team, John Carrol, John Lyle Shaw, Brian Hey, Tom DeBray & David Minto

CRUSADE UPDATE! Jimbo Moss attended the Crusade Action

Planners “Round Table” during the summer of 2003 at Washington & Lee University in Lex-ington, Virginia.

The 4 day retreat started with the check-in to the Alpha House. Here, each of the around 35 young men introduced themselves and made themselves comfortable. Afterwards came several days of intense seminars on how to handle the Crusade Plan at each of the atten-dants own chapters.

The seminars were mainly focused on team building exercises, morals, leadership, motivation, and the many other aspects that go into being a leader in the Order. Hands on

sessions were also attended where the men were able to play different games to build strong bonds between themselves. These games in-cluded a basketball tournament, which every-one enjoyed.

The week was not just about seminars however. The participants also got the chance to visit many historic places around Lexington, including Lee Chapel, Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, Virginia Military Institute and many others.

One such tour was given on a horse drawn carriage. The week ended and all had to go their separate ways, each carrying with him ideas to strengthen his chapter, newly rein-forced morals and great friendships.
