Marine Toys for Tots Foundation

The holiday season is again upon us and the annual Toys for Tots campaign which began in October is drawing to a close with the final toy collection day on December 13th Last year through the generous donations and monetary gifts of the Lubbock community over 38000 toys were distributed to the children of Lubbock This year there are already over 3500 children signed up to receive toys

The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks United States Marine Corps Reserve and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5000 toys to needy children The idea came from Billrsquos wife Diane In the fall of 1947 Diane handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas When Bill determined that no agency existed Diane told Bill that he should start one He did The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign That year Marine Corps Reserve units across the nation conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in each community in which a Marine Reserve Center was located Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns at Christmas each year since 1948 Over the 58 years of the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program Marines have distributed more than 351 million toys for 166 million needy children

To help change a childrsquos holiday season by donating bring a new unwrapped gift for children ages 0 - 14 to a collection point at any United Supermarkets South Plains Mall or any other collection point listed on our website The last day for donations is December 13th Although registration to receive toys has passed there will be a final day for late registration on December 7th from 10am to 3pm

The location for late registration (December 7th) and toy distribution (December 16th through December 18th) is 5001 Marsha Sharp Freeway at the old United Supermarkets building Volunteers are always needed to assist with registration toy sorting and toy distribution
