Since 1913, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce’s mission of strengthening, promoting and serving its member businesses has positively benefitted the entire region and local quality of life.

As the largest business federation on the South Plains, the Chamber represents almost 2,200 members who employ approximately 73,000 workers, and account for around $900 million in economic impact in Lubbock and West Texas. This is accomplished without the use of tax dollars.

Each day, the Chamber strengthens, promotes and serves its member businesses through numerous programs and events. The Chamber advocates on local, state and federal levels and offers diverse programs for both large and small as well as minority-owned businesses.

As 2014 ends along with my year of leading the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce as its Chairwoman, I am honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to serve the Chamber and its 2,100 members this year.

Our second Five Star Accreditation, awarded this year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, was a tremendous recognition of the hard work by our Board of Directors, volunteers, and dedicated staff. We look forward to continuing our pursuit of excellence for our members and community.

Our major membership events, Business Expo, Total Resource Campaign, Hub City BBQ, and our Golf Classic were also huge successes. Thanks to each person who chaired these events and for all our volunteers for their efforts to plan, support, and attend these outstanding programs. Thanks also to the Chamber Ambassadors for their continued volunteer service to the Chamber and our members.

I cannot express enough how I feel about every volunteer we have. Without all of you wonderful volunteers, we would not have had as an outstanding a year as we experienced. Thank you!

I look forward to continue serving the Chamber on the Board and working with one of the best Chamber staffs in America. I also wish the best for the 2015 Chairman, Jay Jacobus, who I know will do a great job and have fun doing it.

Meet New Chamber Staff Member, Susan Bailey The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce welcomes Susan Bailey to its staff as the Accounting Assistant. Bailey began her duties on Nov. 3. A native of Plainview, Texas, Bailey has over 10 years of experience in the accounting field. Prior to coming to the Chamber, Bailey worked in accounting and as the office manager for a doctor’s office in Dalhart for 17 years. In her position at the Chamber, Bailey’s main

areas of work include accounting/finance and office operations, while assisting with the Total Resource Campaign. Bailey is the mother of two children, Madelyn (11) and Mitchell (9).

Lubbock Chamber Applauds City Council’s Initial Food Truck ExpansionThe Lubbock City Council in early November unanimously

voted to expand a local zoning ordinance to specifically allow Mobile Food Vending Units to operate in downtown Lubbock and other designated areas throughout the city.

The Lubbock Chamber has several Mobile Food Vendors within the ranks of its 2,100 members, and Chamber leaders met with some of those food truck owners as well as brick-and-mortar restaurant stakeholders to gauge their needs and concerns earlier this year.

As a result, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously early this fall to urge the City of Lubbock to develop a safe and fair Mobile Food Vendor ordinance that would result in a level playing field for this emerging category of entrepreneurs.

On Thurs., Nov. 6, the Lubbock City Council took the first step toward accomplishing that goal by passing the new ordinance during the first reading.

“In addition to creating new business opportunities for entrepreneurs or expansion options for existing restaurants, we believe this will further enhance the environment in downtown Lubbock and throughout the city in zones where these Mobile Food Vendors will operate,” said Lubbock Chamber Chairwoman Alona Beesinger.

Congratulations to the December Business of the Month, Bayer Museum of Agriculture! The Bayer Museum of Agriculture has been an active member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce since 2005.

Lacee Hoelting, Executive Director, at the Bayer Museum of Agriculture noted that the museum was organized by several community leaders who knew the value of a Chamber membership and they’ve had a great relationship ever since.

“We’ve been able to host several events and groups from the Chamber, which has helped publicize our new museum and rental space. Every Chamber event brings business leaders through our doors, many of which, in turn, come back with their families or become museum members. As a non-profit, that type of exposure is essential

to our success,” Hoelting said. One Chamber event especially

stands out to Hoelting.

“Last year we hosted a Leadership Lubbock group. One of the participants had never been to our museum before which started a conversation that led to a large sponsorship and will result in a new interactive irrigation exhibit at the

museum in 2015,” said Hoelting.With all the Chamber events that

are put on at the Bayer Museum of Agriculture, the favorite is the Harvest luncheon, according to Hoelting.

“It brings people from all different walks of life together to celebrate agriculture. We all eat food and wear clothes, so each of us is involved in agriculture and I think it’s great that the Chamber holds a luncheon to celebrate that industry and its importance to the Lubbock community,” Hoelting stated.

What is your favorite event or program of the Chamber? My favorite event is the Hub City Barbecue! It draws in so many people from all over the community and every year the food is awesome! What are some of your other community leadership roles? I am the Executive Director of a non-profit organization. I serve on the boards of Forensic Nurse

Staffing of West Texas, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, the Lubbock Housing Authority’s Family Self Sufficiency Program, and South Plains College Applied Rehabilitation Psychology Program. I serve as the regional liaison for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Texas’ Executive Director Committee and also serve on the South Plains Regional Child Fatality Review Team. Why did you choose to be a member of Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock? I was first introduced to the Young Professional Group shortly after I relocated to Lubbock. I knew immediately that I would enjoy the group because of the impressive people associated with it.

How long have you been a YP member?I’ve been a member for two and a half years.

What are some of your favorite YP events to attend? I love the First Tuesday Networking. These events are a great way to meet other young professionals. I often work on projects with various non-profit organizations and I like that I’m able to promote whatever event is coming up.

What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being a YP member? One of my first mentors in business once told me: “If you’re always involved with your community and doing what you can for others, the business falls into place!”

Why is being a YP member important to you? It gives me opportunities to meet the future leaders of our community.

What is your position? After an adversity left me struggling with my professional identity, I decided to return to the industry that has rewarded me multiple ways. I must obtain some professional licensees, so I am currently preparing for some exams so I can work as a Financial Advisor.

Congratulations to Spike Wideman, October Ambassador of the Month. Wideman has been a Chamber Ambassador on and off throughout his career, but just re-joined about 18 months ago. “I enjoy the ribbon cuttings because we get to welcome new businesses to Lubbock,” Wideman said about is his favorite part of the Ambassador Program. “I like learning about the businesses and referring business to them when I can.” Wideman’s favorite Chamber event is the bi-monthly Business After Hours because it allows him to meet and network with other Chamber members and non-members that attend. Wideman believes that his role as an ambassador is important as he considers it a way to give back to the community in a positive way. After a 23-year marketing career in the bank industry, Wideman decided to try something new. Since 2013 he has been a real estate agent for W Commercial Real Estate and W Brokerage Group. As a real estate agent, his job entails listing, selling, showing and marketing properties in residential, commercial and vacant land. Outside of the Chamber, Wideman serves on the 34th Street

Association Board of Directors as well as the publicity chairman for the Miracles Christmas Parade each year. He enjoys grilling, going to the movies, jet skiing and being with his family.

Chamber Ambassador Program

Ambassador of the Month: Spike Wideman

The Ambassador program is comprised of 222 men and women of widely diverse Chamber member businesses & organizations, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors are a highly visible, prestigious group of volunteers who strive to assist in fulfilling the Chamber’s mission to “strengthen, promote & serve our member businesses.” They play an essential role in helping facilitate Ribbon Cutting and Ground Breaking ceremonies and by giving of their time to help businesses grow and achieve successful results, the Ambassadors contribute to the overall economic health and growth of the Lubbock business community. The Ambassadors are charged with extending the hand of friendship to new and old members alike, with many providing a welcome at Chamber 101 for new and potential members and act as greeters and hosts at Business After Hours by helping with name tags, gathering business cards for drawings and making introductions. They help ensure members make business contacts and begin to participate in Chamber events by creating awareness of the many opportunities and benefits offered. This valuable program helps build volunteer leadership which is exhibited too, when help is given by assisting fellow Ambassadors with their events. Most importantly though, they have served as the tour guides for the Red Raider Orientation tours facilitated by Visit Lubbock for parents of Texas Tech incoming freshmen. These 222 ambassadors are split up into five teams. Ambassadors compete every month for the most participation in ambassador events. In the month of October, Spike Wideman was named Ambassador of the Month. Team Soliz won Ambassador Team of the Month.

Forty-seven percent of all 222 ambassadors participated in at least one event. Team Soliz achieved 61 percent participation. Team Pool achieved 50 percent participation. Team Davis achieved 47 percent participation. Team Schooler achieved 39 percent participation. Team Laughlin achieved 36 percent participation. The Chamber appreciates the efforts put forth by our Ambassadors, and the time they each devote to Chamber events.

State Legislative Appreciation Luncheon Recap The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce hosted a State Legislative Appreciation Luncheon sponsored by StarCare Specialty Health System at the Lubbock Country Club in mid-November. Featured guests included State Sen. Charles Perry, State Rep. John Frullo and newly-elected State Rep. Dustin Burrows who spoke about issues expected to arise during the 84th Legislature. Events like this luncheon give Chamber members access to elected officials and their staff, and make up an important part of the Chamber's advocacy and legislative affairs initiatives. But, of course, this event and the Chamber's advocacy efforts wouldn't be possible without great sponsors.

New Century Leadership Ag & Energy Day The New Century Leadership class met on Nov. 19, for Ag & Energy Day. The day started off with a visit to Dan and Linda Taylor’s farm with a presentation on the history of cotton and the impact it has on the South Plains. The cotton experience ended with a visit to Buster’s Gin. The class then visited and toured the Bayer Museum of Agriculture and the American Wind

Power Center. The day concluded with a presentation from Dr. Julie Marshall from Lubbock Christian University on the DNA of a peanut and a presentation from Ronnie Madison on Oil and Gas. The next class day is scheduled for Dec. 9.

New Century Leadership Student Spotlight: Grace Watson Get to know New Century Leadership student, Grace Watson. Watson is a high school Junior, who represents Monterey High School in the New Century Leadership program. She was ranked No. 1 out of 599 of her sophomore class, No. 1 out of 620 of her freshman class, and is a member of the National Honor Society. “I love to learn! I really discovered how much fun leaning could be when I began participating in Future Problem Solvers in elementary and middle school. Our team won the Future Problem Solvers State Competition in 2011” Watson said.

Watson is part of the MHS Robotics Team, Pom Squad, Monterey’s Baseball Diamond Dolls, and as an Ambassador for Evans Middle School. “I seem to be at my best when I a juggling several balls in the air,” stated Watson. “Somehow I thrive on the challenge of keeping my grades up while also participating in all the activities I enjoy.” Watson is also part of The National Society of High School Scholars, National Charity League, TTU United Future Leaders and a Lubbock Symphony Guild Debutante.
