The role of the CQC
The CQC are the regulator of allhealth and social care services
in
England
A regulator is an organisation that
checks services meet the
governments standards or rulesabout care

The role of the CQC
They check that people get goodand safe care from:
Hospitals
Dentists Ambulances
GP surgeries
Care homes Services that support people in their
home or other places

The role of CQC
The CQC also look after the rights
of people who need extra support
to stay safe
This includes people who are kept
in care under a law called the
Mental Health Act

What the CQC check
Recently the CQC changed theirapproach
They changed because they felt that
the things that they were checkingand looking at, didnt always
mean
that a service was good or caring
In part this was a response to theabuse at Winterbourne View and
the
deaths at Stafford hospital

This new approach focuses on the qualityof
care that someone is receiving
It focuses on 5 Key Questions:

The experts role
Experts by Experience are people who haveexperience of using
care services
Experts take part in inspections of health and
social care services and visits to monitor the useof the Mental
Health Act
The CQC currently work with around 500Experts by Experience
In the Yorkshire and Humber region there areapproximately 25
experts all with different
experiences Experts play a vitally important role in the
inspections

The CQC have recognised the
importance of the expertsexperience and their
understanding of what qualityreally looks and feels like
Experts also get involved in
consultations and training

What it means to me
Some of the inspections have been
really challenging
But, I feel I have been able to
influence how a service has been
rated, and the future care and
support people using that service
receive
I feel my role really matters
