One of the many benefits of working on the original campusof York University is that you feel the pride and significance ofbeing associated with the place that started the incredibleascension of a great institution of learning! York University, 50 years on, is one of the lar gest universities in Canada, andits incredible deve lop ment has not compro mi sed the beautyand wonderful surroundings of its first campus.

This year, Glendon joins in celebrating the 50th anniversary ofYork University. Within York, Glendon occupies a unique placeas a bilingual learning environment. It has matu red into aninno vative, multidisciplinary and incredibly dynamic placewhere students from all over the world come to study.

At the beginning of this year, celebrations at York were laun -ched with a book by Glendon emeritus professor Michiel Hornentitled York University: The way must be tried, presenting theofficial history of York University. I invite you to read an articleby Professor Horn in this issue.

There is much we are celebrating in this issue. A year ago, the Ontario Government gave $20,000,000to Glen don to renovate and build new classrooms. Glendon is now recognized as a Centre of Excellencefor French Language and Bilingual Postsecondary Education and for its bilingual School of Public andInternational Affairs. In these pages, you will meet many graduate students from the School of Publicand International Affairs, the School of Translation and the Department of French Studies. You will alsobe introduced to new professors at Glendon and to our new Associate Principal, Academic and ourAssociate Principal, Student Services. And guiding Glendon into its promising future is Principal KennethMcRoberts, who will lead us for the next five years.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thanks to the collective effort of all parts of the Glendon com -munity — faculty, staff, students and alumni — Glendon has beengreatly strengthened over the last few years.

Student enrolment is now stabilized. Indeed, at 2,500 stu dents,enrolment exceeds the University’s target for Glendon. At thesame time, the grade point average required for admis sion toGlendon has been raised such that Glendon is now amongOntario’s leading liberal arts faculties.

As well, we have put in place some innovative academic pro -gram ming. At the undergraduate level, we have established apopular International B.A., with both bilingual and trilingualoptions. In collaboration with York’s Faculty of Education, aconcur rent B.A.-B.Ed. program has been established to prepareteachers for French immersion schools.

At the graduate level, we have established the Glendon Schoolof Public & International Affairs that builds on our historicalmission of preparing bilingual leaders for public life. The Schoolhas an advisory committee composed of 25 national publicleaders and, last spring, held an important conference on ‘PublicInstitutions and Canada’s Future’. The bilingual two-year Master’sin Public & International Affairs now has its first class. A mostpro mising group of students, they will spend this sum mer asgovern ment interns and, in the fall, they will be on ex change atSciences Po, Paris, University of Strasbourg, Université Laval andother institutions.

Finally, funds have been secured to address deferred mainte -nance needs on the campus, as well as to provide for additionalspace to accommodate enrolment growth. The Ontario govern -ment is investing $20 million in our campus so as to make Glen -don the southern Ontario Centre of Excellence for French Lan -guage and Bilingual Postsecondary Education. Thanks to thiscom mit ment of the Ontario government, Glen don’s future isnow assured.

Partly as a result of these efforts, Glendon is now well posi tionedto make even more remarkable progress over the next few years.

Plans are being developed for a number of innovative gra duateand undergraduate programs. A Ph.D. program in Étu des Franco -phones, combining linguistics and the study of literature, hasalready been approved by York’s Faculty of Gra duate Studies. APh.D. in Translation & Transcultural Studies is in the works. Propo -sals are being developed for Master’s programs in Hispanic Stu -dies, ‘Culture et sociétés’ and Western Hemispheric Studies.

The Glendon School of Public & International Affairs is to becomple mented by a trilingual Centre on Global Challenges. Theresearch arm of the School, it would bring together publicleaders and researchers to explore global challenges that havea particular importance for Canada.

Plans are already being formulated for a second phase of cam -pus development, with a particular focus on graduate educationand research. It would also support collaboration with Ontario’stwo francophone colleges in such areas as communications andearly childhood education.

Finally, Glendon has just launched its first fundraising campaign,led by an outstanding committee with Claude Lamoureux, pastpresident of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, as its chair.Under the theme ‘Leadership for Global Challenges’, the cam -paign will seek support for student scholarships, faculty chairs,campus improvement and for initiatives that build upon Glen -don’s particular strength in the study of languages and culturesand in public and international affairs.

In short, we have some exciting opportunities before us. It is forthis reason that I decided to submit my candidacy for a new termas Principal. I am delighted that the President has now con fir medmy appointment to a five-year term, starting July 1st of this year.

To be sure, the current year has been most challenging forGlendon, and for York University as a whole. Nonetheless, weappear to have recovered well from the labour disruption.Indeed, Glendon actually saw a substantial increase in under -graduate student applications for 2009-10. On the basis of thenumber of students who have already accepted offers of

admission, we should be able to achieve our enrolment target,while maintaining our required grade point average.

As with all Ontario universities, York is facing major budgetarychallenges due to the current economic climate. Inevitably, thisaffects Glendon. In the coming years it will be even more impor -tant that Glendon draws upon its large network of suppor ters,from alumni to the Ontario Francophone commu nity, to natio -nal public and business leaders.

In sum, Glendon has many demonstrated strengths. Given itsuni que mandate, it has a special role to play, not only in sou thernOntario, but nationally and even internationally. I look forward toworking with the Glendon community and with York Universityto carry our plans forward.

Among the events marking York University’s 50th birthday, theCollege Masters’ Public Lecture Series was launched on March11th, with the first lecture in the series given at Glendon by Poli -tical Science Professor and Glendon Principal Kenneth McRoberts.

Hosted by Glendon’s Associate Principal, Student Services Louise Lewin, the lecture’s title — Dealing with Dualism: Lan -guage, Cul ture and Identity in Canada — reflects McRoberts’ life -long focus and scho larly work on Canada’s issues of bilingualismand bicul tu ralism.

“Canada is shaped by the dualism of its official languages,” saidMcRoberts. “These two linguistic groups (the French and English)are real communities which have, for all intents and purposes,been mutually exclusive.” McRoberts traced the changes in thefoundations of this dualism, based in the 19th century on reli gion,while in the 20th century on language. He followed this trajectoryto the arrival of multiculturalism in the 1970s, pointing out thatfor the diverse racial and ethnic groups now comprising Canadiansociety, the binding force is based on language. “At the time ofConfederation in 1867, the Canadian state was based on thenotion of federation rather than dualism. For French Canada theimportant thing was to have a province, where its language andculture were protected.”

McRoberts outlined the impact of the Trudeau years, with theemphasis on freedom of individual choice and equal access toopportunities. Trudeau stated that while dualism divided people,bilingualism united them. His goal was to lead Quebeckers toidentify with Canada rather than with Quebec alone. Since thattime, the restructuring of the federal public service’s bilingual

man date and the language rights defined in the Canadian Char -ter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982 have ensured that Fran co - phones across the country are now guaranteed the availability ofgover nment services in their own language.

“Much has changed over the years, with respect to French-language representation across the country,” said McRoberts.“Today, all national parties (of Canada) recognize Quebec as anation and only politicians with a reasonable competency in theirsecond official language, whether French or English, can aspire topositions as leaders of the major parties.”

McRoberts pointed out that over the last two decades there hasbeen a decline in Anglophones learning French. Bilingual andFrench-language universities across the country could have asigni ficant role in filling this language gap, but additional resour -ces needed for offering a bilingual education are currently una -vailable. “Glendon is exceptional in being able to establish a trulybilingual environment for its students.”

“Glendon’s trajectory (from its beginnings) parallels the history ofCanada’s progression from dualism to bilingualism, and the ideasof the Bi-Bi Commission,” said McRoberts. “Our crest displays the two founding communities of the country and the spirit of the ‘60s that pervaded Glendon’s early activities.” Today’s focuson the Glendon campus continues to be on second-languagetraining and opportunities for French-language education forFranco pho nes from every part of Canada. “Glendon is also thetraining ground of many bilingual leaders of Canadian society andshould be regarded as a centre of Canadian dualism.”

For Françoise Mougeon, taking on the challenge of Glendon’sAssociate Principal (Academic and Research) role is a bit likelear ning how to ride a bike again. The French Studies professorwas appointed to the position July 1, three years after leadingthe portfolio in an 18-month acting capacity.

“Some things have changed, but I’m finding my way again rela -ti vely quickly,” she says.

That’s a real advantage for a job that includes accountability forthe twin cornerstones of academic affairs and research. Bothportfolios are in the spotlight right now as part of a campus-wide, strategic focus on innovative student learning. Mougeonis at the heart of Glendon’s efforts to weave research oppor tu -nities throughout the undergraduate curriculum and peak stu -dent interest in graduate studies.

“Many of our undergraduate students are ready to be chal len -ged in this way. They have the incentive, but not the tools,” saysMougeon. “Our job is to develop those skills, to give them ataste of what they might experience in one of Glendon’s gra -duate programs.”

That also means growing the number of graduate study oppor -tunities to meet anticipated demand. To the current slate ofMaster’s programs in French Studies, Public and InternationalAffairs, and Translation, Glendon is poised to add this fall twoMasters programs, one in Hispanic Studies and another in Cul -ture and Society, and a PhD program — the College’s first — inFranco phone Affairs. Also in the works is a doctoral program inTranslation. To help fuel program growth and support the gro -wing number of students, the College has also hired an impres -sive 11 new faculty members — all research scholars in theirown right — in the last year alone.

Investing in research presents a win-win for students and facultymembers alike, says Mougeon. “In order to develop scholarlyresearch, it’s important to engage students as research assis -tants. Without graduate programs, though, skilled researchassis tants can be hard to find.”

She speaks from experience. In spite of the demands of herthree-year appointment, Mougeon is maintaining her own rigo -rous research program in bilingual/multilingual education withsupport from a team of research assistants and graduate stu -dents.

“The way we learn has changed a great deal. Today’s studentsare more responsible. They know what they want early in lifeand it’s our job to adjust to that. Because Glendon is such asmall place, we’re uniquely positioned to cope.”

“New programs, more research — this, I hope, is my legacy.”

Francis Garon has no worries that his research has a best-beforedate. A specialist in public affairs with a keen interest in publicparticipation, Garon is about to publish his first book and he’sknee-deep in a research project involving the recent Quebeccom mission on cultural differences and immigrant integration.

“Democracy isn’t just the latest craze,” he chuckles. “Some sayit’s a never ending project.”

Indeed. A graduate of l'Université de Montréal, Garon is tacklingthe question of how governments involve citizens in the policyprocess. He joined Glendon in 2007 as one of the College’s first-round picks for the new School of Public and International Affairs.

“When I started my research, I was amazed by all the ideas anddiscourses that were promoting participation among citizens andgroups in the policy process,” says Garon. ”All this appeared tome as overstatements; I wanted to know if it translated intoconcrete processes and institutions.”

The answer in a nutshell, he says, is “no.” In his soon-to-be-published book, Participatifs, délibératifs ou libéraux? Les modesde participation au gouvernement fédéral canadien (Presses del’Université Laval), Garon argues that both the way govern mentsconsult with the public and the public’s likelihood of participatingare not as straightforward as often stated.

“Governments are still reluctant to share power through consul -ta tion and it’s not clear if ‘ordinary’ citizens really want to parti -cipate.”

He’s now continuing his exploration of democratic practices instu dying the public hearings on cultural differences and immi -g rant integration in Quebec. The 2007-08 commission, led byCharles Taylor and Gérard Bouchard, attracted more than 840 me moirs from citizens and groups province-wide, and resul -ted in a final report released in May 2008. Garon is working clo -sely with Glendon social scientist and lawyer Michael Barutciskito assess the public participation process and the larger issuessurrounding the debate from a multidisciplinary perspective.

“We’re trying to combine the legal and political perspectives,” hesays. “We think that there is a great potential to shed new lighton these questions and issues.”

The opportunity to work with political scientists, economists,socio logists, historians and others from across campus was oneof the many things that attracted Garon to Glendon. While some -times a challenge to manage, he says it’s an especially criticalcom po nent of public affairs research that crosses so many boun -daries.

“It’s worth it to make the effort, to identify the linkages, to findthe space in which to collaborate. For me, the opportunity to dothis was a big part of my decision to come here.”

On July 1, 2009, Rosanna Furgiuele will step into the jointrole of Associate Principal, Student Services and Coor di -na tor, Glendon Student Exchanges. Juggling multipleport folios is a challenge the Glendon associate professortakes in stride. Furgiuele is currently Chair of the Depart -ment of French Studies, Director of the French LanguageProgram and Coordinator of the Bilingual Program. Shespoke to Glendon Magazine this spring about the chal -len ges and opportunities that lie ahead.

GM: What attracted you to these roles?

RF: The primary attraction is the fact that both positions revolvearound students. I have always had a very keen interest in stu -dents. My contact with students has been the most fascinatingand rewarding part of teaching.

GM: You no doubt have large shoes to fill. How will your leader -ship style stand apart?

RF: Yes, Louise Lewin has done an extraordinary job; she has laida very solid foundation. My primary aim is to build on theexcellent existing foundation. I think that our objectives are thesame: we are both committed to enhancing the student expe -rience and ensuring student success. I think our leadership stylesare fairly similar: we are both “hands on”, we are team playersand work well with colleagues. We both relate well to studentsand are accessible to them.

GM: How are you preparing to take on your new role on July 1?

RF: Louise and I are meeting on a regular basis so that I canbecome familiar with the portfolio that includes 25 different sec -tors, each with its own manager. I am reassured in knowing thatthere are already very experienced teams in place. As the new -comer, I will certainly rely on their expertise and advice.

GM: Describe the knowledge and experience that make youideally suited for this position.

RF: I believe that my administrative experience in dealing withstudents has prepared me for the position of Associate Principal,Student Services. In managing student-professor conflicts, issuesof academic integrity, racial and sexual harassment, and grantingof deferred standings, I have developed the ability to deal withconflict in an effective and diplomatic manner. I also have a his -tory of overseeing international study programs. My very firstadmi nistrative position at Glendon was Coordinator of the StudyAbroad programme.

GM: Principal Ken McRoberts spoke of Glendon’s high levels ofstudent satisfaction and participation in international exchanges.What do you believe to be the key reasons behind our success?In what ways might we improve… or change?

RF: I believe that the main reasons for our success are the effortsto select the candidates who would benefit most from the expe -rience; to prepare them by providing the necessary infor ma tionand advice; and to remain accessible while they are abroad. It isalso very important to maintain close ties with the host univer si -ties. In the future, there may be a need to explore new prog ram sand exchanges. I’d like to look for ways to attract more fran co -phone students to Glendon.

GM: What do you hope is your greatest legacy?

RF: Three years from now, at the end of my mandate, I hope tolook back and say that I worked with and for the students. I hopethat I will have contributed, in some way, to make their time at Glen don a happy and fulfilling experience. And I hope to ac comp lish this as a team, collaborating and working together.My ultimate goal is to make a difference for the better.

Include Mary-Catherine Davidson in a meeting where languageflows between English, French and even a smattering of Spa -nish, and the specialist in multilingualism in medieval Englandis on Cloud Nine. Having spent the first six years of her acade -mic career in a more traditional setting at the University of Kan -sas, she knows she’s found something special at Glendon’sbilingual college.

“This is a time and a place where people aren’t wrapped up inone native language or even two,” says Davidson, a tenuredpro fessor of English. “Glendon is linguistically free. Meetings arebeautiful because people go back-and-forth between langua -ges. It’s magical.”

Glendon’s unique culture holds particular appeal in that it’s amodern-day paradigm of the very phenomenon Davidson stu -dies. In her soon-to-be-published book Medievalism, Multilin -gualism and Chaucer, she argues that scholarly approaches tomedieval English often reflect modern misassumptions aboutAnglophones and bilingualism. The same preconceptions don’texist on Glendon’s campus, she says.

“At a place like this it’s hard to imagine someone being exclu -si vely affiliated with one language. Students here are alreadyliving in several languages.”

The same wasn’t true of Davidson’s last academic posting. “AtKansas, I was challenged to get Anglophones to think aboutmultilingualism and their attitudes toward language. The rela -tionship between Spanish and English in the United States isvery different from that of English and French in Canada,” sheobserves. “There can be discomfort with bilingualism in theStates.”

A self-described “humble prairie girl” from Saskatchewan,David son was studying medieval languages and literature at theUni versity of Toronto when she became transfixed by the “gate-keeping” power of the English language. “Well-trained peoplefrom other countries were being held back in Canada becauseof misassumptions about their English language skills.” Sheholds tight to the belief that something is amiss in a culture thatgives one language power over another.

Davidson earned her PhD in 2001 and was tenured at the Uni -versity of Kansas just as she spotted a job posting for Glendon’sDepartment of English.

“The chance to study multilingualism in a multilingual environ -ment? I couldn’t resist having a look,” she laughs.

Two years into her posting, she’s already knee-deep in hersecond book project, a study of “linguistic profiling” that exa mi -nes how people judge others by their languages and accents.Davidson is also trading medieval literature and languages forfilm in a study of how movies reproduce and restate the lan -guage biases of a culture-at-large.

She credits Glendon with providing the right mix of ingredientsto make it all happen.

When it comes to retirement, Glendon Professor Emerita Marga -rita Feliciano calls fellow retiree Alain Baudot her muse. “He wasmy inspiration,” she says. “I wanted to do for Spanish what Alaindid for French.”

With GREF — Baudot’s French-language publishing house (seepage 10) — as her model, Feliciano launched in 2006 theANTARES Publishing House of Spanish Culture. In the years since,she has grown ANTARES into a leading trilingual publisher spe cializing in language, literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. ANTARES has published four works with anotherhalf a dozen now in progress, including an anthology featuring 35 Spanish-influenced writers and artists.

“This will be a record-breaking year!” she exclaims.

Such rapid-fire success hasn’t gone unnoticed. In November,Feliciano, was named one of 10 Hispanic Canadians who reallymade a difference at a national ceremony hosted by Scotiabankand the Toronto Stock Exchange and supported by organizationsincluding York University.

“Over the past 40 years, the Spanish-speaking community inCanada has progressively become an important presence in thesocio-cultural makeup of this country,” said Feliciano. “It is theresult of the effort of many individuals who have been contri -buting to the community over the years in many and meaningfulways. I feel deeply honoured to be counted in this group.”

A poet, critic and literary translator of Italian-Argentinean origin,Feliciano is the former coordinator of Glendon’s certificate pro -g ram in Spanish/English translation.

ANTARES Publishing House of Spanish Culture is a trilingual Glendon-based pub li -shing house that was created on April 23, 2005. Having obtained its not-for-profitstatus in June 2006, ANTARES uses Spanish, English and French as the main vehiclesof commu ni cation and it specializes in the language, literature and culture of theSpanish-speaking world and in works in translation in the above-mentionedlanguages.

The Editorial Board of ANTARES considers for publication works in the followinggenres and areas: novel, short story, poetry, cultural studies, scholarly publications,works in translation, linguistics and language acquisition, children and youth lite ra -ture, and education.

Since March of 2008, ANTARES has published the following titles:La Palabra Ardiente / The Ardent Word / La Parole Ardente; El Portal de la Sirena /The Mermaid's Gateway; Viajes y Rodajes / Break-In Voyages; Canada and theAmericas : Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Transculturality: Proceedings from theInternational Multi-Lingual Colloquium.

Several books are scheduled to be published in the current year, the first of whichis an anthology, ANTARES 2009, edited by Prof. Margarita Feliciano. Alain Baudot was studying at the University of Cam bridge and the École Normale Supérieure(the presti gious Rue d’Ulm) in Paris in 1966 when he had a chance meeting in the FrenchMinistry of External Affairs with Glendon’s first principal Escott Reid.

“He said he was opening a new, bilingual liberal arts college,” remembers Baudot, “and hewanted me to come to Toronto.”

Baudot did and although he’s taught at other institutions over the years, he’s always returnedto Glendon. “It’s an ideal place to teach and learn. It’s small enough to get to know everyone.I’m still in touch with students I taught in 1966.”

Hired to teach French Studies, Baudot soon branched into the huma nities. By the mid-1970s,he was convinced that the best opportunities for learning stemmed from an interdisciplinaryapproach. Baudot founded Glendon’s multidisciplinary studies department where hecontinued in the role of chair for seven years.

“Multidisciplinary studies allows students to build their own program, to seek out whateverinterests them. It’s what I was taught to do as part of my own schooling — to put thingstogether without boundaries.”

Baudot’s other claim to fame was Groupe de recherche en étu des francophones (GREF),established in 1984 to promote fran co phone literature and re search. The program, which has since grown to include a suc ces sfulFrench-language publi shing arm, was Baudot’s response to the need for a more diverse ap proach to French studies.

“Escott Reid’s founding vision of a bilingual Glendon included hiring people in Paris to teach French and in England to teach English,”says Baudot. “Quebec literature wasn’t even taught in Ontario at the time.” Through GREF, Glendon’s definition of French literaturehas expanded to include courses on African, Belgian-French and Swiss-French litera ture.

This wil ling ness to embrace multiple cul tures is the very thing that Baudot says distinguishes Glen don as unique and is the founda -tion of what he hopes will drive the College in the future.

“In 1966, our goal was simply to have a university that would teach people to speak two lan guages. We now attract students from allover the world who represent multiple cultures and speak several languages. I want to see Glendon reach out to the world and it will.”

There were 127 candles on Alain Baudot’s virtual birthdaycake this spring.

That’s the number of works published by GREF, the French-language publishing house based at the College andfoun ded by the Glendon professor emeritus in 1987.GREF’s mandate is to publish academic and creative booksin French, along with books written in memory of Glendoncolleagues.

“My goal was to encourage people to write in French,” saysBaudot.

That he has. GREF’s catalogue includes several nationalaward winners and internationally-recognized authors.Among the close to 90 published writers are as many asseven Glendon alumni and authors with ties to French-speaking countries around the world.

Except to those who work and study here, the Glendon campussometimes seems to be one of York’s well-kept secrets. A goodmany students at the Keele campus take their degrees withoutever having seen Glendon, while most faculty and staff mem -bers find their way here infrequently, if at all. Some outsidersaren’t sure whether we are part of York at all: during the recentstrike I was asked several times whether the strike affectedGlendon!

Yet Glendon is crucial in the history of York and an importantpart of today’s university. It was here that the university movedin 1961 from Falconer Hall on the University of Toronto campus.At that time it was York’s only campus, and although land wasacquired near Keele and Steeles in 1962, the working assump -tion was that the university would remain focused on Glendonfor at least a decade. Expansion to the new campus wouldoccur at a measured pace.

That plan changed in late 1962. A report commissioned by thethen Committee of Presidents of the Universities of Ontariowarned the universities that student growth would be a lotfaster than anyone had anticipated. York’s plans for low-speeddevelopment earned criticism for their conservatism. In res -ponse, the university committed itself to an ambitious buildingprogram at the Keele campus, with the first buildings to beoccupied in 1965 and the main body of the university to belocated there by 1966.

This left the fate of York’s first campus in doubt. It also contri -buted to a “faculty revolt” that saw about a quarter of the facultyas well as the university librarian leave in 1963. But if somefeared that York would abandon the Glendon campus, that wasnever in the cards. The provision that the campus would revertto the University of Toronto for the one dollar York had paid forit ensured that York would hold on to Glendon. Besides, theBoard of Governors preferred to meet here!

Lester Pronger of York’s French department was first to proposethe notion of a “national college,” in which instruction wouldtake place in both of Canada’s official lan gua -ges. Others had the same idea. Among themwas the former diplomat Escott Reid, approa -ched by President Murray Ross in 1964 tobecome the principal of a liberal arts collegeon the Glendon site. The result was GlendonCollege, which opened its doors to students inthe fall of 1966.

By that time, an increasing number of York’sfaculty, staff, and students were on the Keelecampus. However, a period of overlap beganthat did not end until 1969. Some facultymem bers taught on both campuses; somestudents took classes on both. Many of thosewho had registered in the Faculty of Arts in

1965 remained on the Glendon campus until graduation. Thatwas also the year that the first students graduated with aGlendon degree in the Ordinary Program.

One of the curiosities of the Glendon campus is that among thestudents who graduated here, mem bers of the first three yearsgot their degrees from the University of Toronto, with which Yorkwas affiliated until 1965, and members of the next three yearsgot their degrees in the Faculty of Arts. Furthermore, the use ofthe campus by Glen don College was never exclusive. For manyyears, students in Atkinson Col lege used Glendon during the

evenings. Inter-cam pus ties gradually weake nedas Atkinson held ever more of its clas ses on theKeele cam pus, and, by the 1990s, rela tions hadbecome rather distant, even slightly hostile.

That has changed. In this year of the 50th anni -ver sary of the York University Act, relations seemstronger than they have been for years. Onesign is that the Board of Gover nors has resumedmee ting at Glendon. Another is that the inter-campus bus service seems to get more usethese days than ever before. Although not aswell-known on the Keele campus as it shouldbe, Glendon College and its campus are vitalparts of York University.

If three times is the charm then Vanessa Gates was destined forgra duate stu dies at Glendon.

The Sudbury, Onta rio native got her first taste of Glen don in 2006while 400 kilo metres away on the cam pus of Lau rentianUniversity. The pre sen tation by a Glen don re pre sen ta tive won thethen-under grad over in a heart beat.

“I knew I wanted to do a Master’s in French Studies and to beable to do it at another small cam pus was reassuring. I figured itwould help to ease the adjust ment,” she says of her move froma city of 200,000 to a spraw ling community of more than amillion neighbours.

If that wasn’t enough, Gates soon happened upon an old highschool friend who was studying at Glendon and had nothingbut great things to say.

And then there were the children’s books. “When I comparedGlendon’s graduate program in French Studies with that atother schools, I saw that Glendon had a course in French youngpeople’s literature.”

“That,” she says happily, “was the straw that broke the camel’sback.”

Gates dove headlong into her study of Quebec children’sliterature in September 2007 under the mentorship of ProfessorSylvie Rosienski-Pellerin, director of the Maîtrise en études fran -çai ses program. She’s now writing her thesis with plans to gra -duate this spring.

As for what happens next, Gates doesn’t plan on leaving thingsto chance. She intends to work for a time before tackling herPhD, hopefully at Glendon in 2010 when the College is set tolaunch its new doctoral French Studies program.

INTRODUCING FOUR TOP GRADUATE STUDENTSLUAN CANAJ - INSPIRED BY A LOVE OF LANGUAGE

French words are Luan Canaj’s specialty. The graduate literaturestu dent has spent nearly 20 years studying and teaching Frenchliterature and language in both Albania and Canada. After ear -ning a BA in French Language at the University of Tirana in Alba -nia in 1990, he worked as a Uni versity lecturer and a translatorto the Counsel of Europe, while publishing a series of essaysand articles on contemporary literature. A move to Toronto in2002 brought additional French language teaching oppor tu ni -ties and, eventually, a Bachelor of Education degree from theUni versity of Ottawa.

But Canaj never forgot his love of language. “I wanted some -thing more,” he says of the year following his graduation fromTeacher’s College in 2006.

His first day in Glendon’s Master’s of Literature program was likesliding into a favourite pair of old jeans. It just felt right.

“I love every aspect of the experience – the campus, the city, thebilingualism, the people,” he says.

So much so, in fact, that even in the midst of the final, anxiety-rid den days before the submission of his thesis this spring,Canaj already had his heart set on returning to Glendon tocomp lete a PhD in translation or French literature.

“I’m thinking about becoming a professor of French literature ata Canadian university,” says the newly-minted Canadian andparent, with wife Kristina, of two daughters Hera and Luna.

“I love Canada, this mythical country with immense skies! I loveeverything about it!”

GRAHAM RICHARDSON - A BILINGUAL DEGREE WAS REALLY APPEALING

SARA COSTA - FOUR LANGUAGES IN HER QUEST FOR A CAREER IN THE PUBLIC SERVICES

For Sara Costa, being a part of Glendon’s first Master's in Publicand International Affairs program is a bit like ordering à la cartein a restaurant.

“It’s very much Principal McRoberts’ vision, but we do haveinput. We’re creating the program as we go,” she says.

That’s just fine by her. After completing an undergraduatedegree in political science and international development, andworking for two years in a marketing firm, Sara was drawn to agraduate program that offered an eclectic menu of internshipand international exchange opportunities. And, thanks tostudent input and the vision of program administrators, thechoices just keep growing.

“We asked for even more exchange opportunities around theworld, in French and also in second and third languages,”explains Sara. The result, after just a handful of months, is ad -di tional postings in Paris, France and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Saraalready has her eye one of the four-month exchanges in Francewhere she plans to brush up on her speaking skills. Alreadyfluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English, she hopes a fourthlanguage — and Canada’s official language — will give her a leg-up in her quest for a career in the public service.

It’s a long way from what she might have imagined six-and-a-half years ago when, as a fresh-faced high school graduate, shearrived in Canada from Portugal to help care for her infantniece.

“Before I left, my parents suggested I consider post-secondaryeducation here because it’s known internationally.”

One look at Glendon — on a blustery January day, nonetheless—and she was sold on the possibilities!

FOR THE FUTURE

Glendon’s new Mas ter’s in Public and In ter na tional Affairs pro -g ram had to pass a tough litmus test this fall with inco ming stu -dent Gra ham Richard son.

Part of the program’s inaugural class of 18, Richardson spent thelast year as a policy advisor in the Ministry of Training, Col legesand Universities, res pon ding to major layoffs in the province andfunnelling infor ma tion on the gover n ment’s emp loy ment initiati -ves to the office of Minister John Mil loy. Dealing with the storiesof people who have lost their jobs and are seeking retraining gaveRichardson fresh insight into edu cational pathways to success.

“I had been toying with doing a Master’s of Public Admin de gree,then a Master’s of International Relations,” he says. “Glen don’sprogram landed right between the two and the fact that it was abilingual degree was really appealing.”

“I’m hoping that it will open doors down the road.”

A self-described political and current affairs junkie, Richardson hastaken a combined parental leave and one-year leave of absencefrom work to focus exclusively on his studies. He and his wife,Jeannie, welcomed their first child, a son William, in May of last year.

“It’s fun to study in depth some of the issues we hear about on adaily basis,” he says of the program, Canada’s first bilingual gra -duate degree in public affairs. In the midst of the federal elec tionlast fall, Richardson delivered a presentation on the Liberal Party’sproposed carbon tax.

“Having a few years of work experience under my belt allows meto bring a different perspective to my studies,” he says.

His classmates agree, although they aren’t willing to let the 31-year-old Richardson off lightly.

$20 MILLION IN MOTION

HOW RENOVATIONS AND NEW SPACES ARE TRANSFORMING GLENDON

Glendon’s new student lounge in York Hall is where youngpoliticians, artists, diplomats and scholars meet. This innovativespace features comfortable seating for group study, wirelessinternet access, meeting rooms for student government andclubs, even a foozeball and air hockey table. Next door is Glen -don’s new admissions and welcome centre, and Salon Franco -phone, where students receive help with their French or gettogether to watch a French movie. A short walk and you’ll findrenovated classrooms and the new Spanish Resource Centre,facilities sure to support teaching and research within Glendon’snew School of Public and International Affairs and internationalbachelor of arts program. This flurry of activity over the last yearis welcomed by Glendon’s student body — now the largest in theCollege’s his tory — and is a sign of the exciting times at Glendon.

It’s all part of Glendon’s mission for the future — a mission toestablish Glendon as the Centre of Excellence in Southern Onta -rio for French-Language and Bilingual Postsecondary Edu cation.In 2008, in support of this goal, the provincial govern mentpledged $20 million to help modernize and ex pand Glendon’sfacilities and broaden its programming.

“It’s about providing an up-to-date learning envi ron -ment,” says John Milloy,Ontario minister of training,college & universities.

The initiative will providebetter access to French-lan -guage higher education forfrancophone and Frenchimmer sion lear ners in Southern Ontario. The region is home toalmost one-third of Ontario’s francophones and contains about40 per cent of the students in Canada’s French immersionprograms. Glen don is the only insti tution in Southern Ontarioto offer an enti rely bilingual university education.

“Facility renovations allow us to continue our commitment to apersonalized and enriching student experience, as well as buildupon our proud tradition of preparing the global leaders oftomorrow,” says Principal Kenneth McRoberts.

Phase one of campus renovations include further expansion ofYork Hall, providing a new main entrance to the campus. Thenew space will include a lec ture hall and an ampitheatre withsea ting for 300 or more and studio space for fine arts students.In side the existing York Hall, a state-of-the-art language lab willbe created, supporting English, French and Spanish second lan -guage learning, as well as classes offered through Glendon’sSchool of Translation.

“Sometimes education is about bricks and mortar, about pro vi -ding spaces where students and faculty can work properly andachieve academic goals,” says Milloy.

This building project and a projected Phase II are intended tosupport many of Glendon’s new programming initiatives. TheGlendon School of Public and International Affairs welcomedits first class in fall 2008. As Canada’s first bilingual school ofpublic affairs, it will play an important role in the renewal ofpublic life. The gra duate school is directed by an advisorycommittee of some of the country’s top public leaders, inclu -ding Graham Fraser, Canada’s Commissioner of Official Lan -guages; Chantal Hebert, political commentator and Glendonalumna; Kim Campbell, former Canadian prime minister.

“More than ever, Canada and the world are in need of post -secondary institutions like Glendon. The School of Public andInternational Affairs, will help make Glendon a national andinternational centre for public affairs teaching, research andpublic debate,“ says Alex Himelfarb, Chair of the GSPIA.

Other recently launched programs include a fully-bilingual inter -national BA and a unique bilingual bachelor of education,desig ned specifically to prepare future French teachers. “Glen -don’s wonderful diversity of programming appealed to me

when I was thinking ofcoming here,” says secondyear inter national studiesstudent Heidi Markiewicz.“The in ter na tional focus ofstudy and small classroomsizes made it the rightchoice for me. I’ve met peo -ple from around the worldand even my professorsknow my name.”

Plans are also underway to introduce a PhD in études franco pho -nes and a PhD in translation & transcultural studies, as well asestablish a research centre on global challenges, in comple mentto the work done at the School of Public and International Affairs.

“Our unique programming continues to attract more and morestudents to Glendon campus,” explains McRoberts. “For exam -ple, our international BA is already a great success.” With thelargest number of students in its history, Glendon is now filled tocapacity, making additional classroom space even more vital.Enrolment levels have grown more than 40 per cent since the1990s. And the number of Francophones in Sou thern Ontario isgrowing, as is the projected growth of the uni ver sity studentpopulation in the GTA. “There has never been a more oppor tunetime to support growth at Glendon,” says McRoberts.

The government’s pledge of $20 million, which will also supportenhanced collaborations between Glendon and Sudbury-basedCollège Boréal, is part of the province’s investment plan toimprove Ontario’s competiveness and stimulate job creationand economic growth. Private support will further enable therealization of these goals as well as support Glendon’s mission.

Glendon College is the new home of a prestigious re searchchair named in honour of the man many regard as the fatherof the European Union.

The Jean Monnet Chair, established in 1990 by the EuropeanCommission, recognizes the visionary French entrepreneur whowas named secretary-general of the League of Nations when itwas created in 1919. At the end of the Second World War,Monnet proclaimed that the only hope for peace in Europe wasfor the European countries to join in a collaborative community.

The chair was awarded to Willem Maas, a professor of politicalscience, and public and international affairs who specializes inissues of citizenship, integration policies, the limits of toleranceand multiculturalism, and the intersections between migrationand the law. His first book, Creating European Citizens, publi -shed in 2007, delves into EU citizenship, suggesting that integra -tion is about much more than economics.

“Canadians are receptive to the ideals of the EU," says Maas,“but specific integration practices remain misunderstood. Glen -don is a strategic site to disseminate information about Euro -pean affairs, owing to its bilingual public affairs mandate, itslocation in Canada’s largest metropolis and its numerousalumni pursuing careers in key areas of Canadian public life.”

Maas’ appointment as Jean Monnet Chair is only the sixth suchappointment in Canada. The program, operating in 60 countries

on five continents, responds to a perceived need for increasedreflection and debate on European integration.

“There is a demand to deepen and broaden our course offe ringson European studies," says Maas. “The Jean Monnet Chair provi -des an opportunity to fill this need in a setting that will serveunder graduates, as well as graduate and mature students affi lia -ted with the new Glendon School of Public & International Affairs.”

“This is an exciting new challenge for me, and hopefully a startof comprehensive European studies at Glendon and York.”

Public Servant-in-Residence Diane Morissette says therenewal of the public service begins here.

Senior government executive Diane Morissette was vying tobecome Glendon’s first public servant-in-residence when sheput the brakes on the discussion to tour the campus and do alittle background reading.

“Glendon Principal [Ken] McRoberts came to meet with me inOttawa, but before I said ‘yes’ I told him that I wanted to see thecampus.” On the way, Morissette read speeches by foundingprincipal Escott Reid, espousing his vision of a bilingual, liberalarts faculty with a public affairs focus.

“I arrived wondering if Glendon was real or a utopia.”

She wasn’t disappointed. “Right from the beginning, I knew thiswould be a good place to work. I appreciated the openness, theinterdisciplinarity and the fact that people are constantly thinkingand challenging themselves to do things differently, both as indi -vi duals and as an organization. The founding philosophy of Glen -don is still very much in practice.”

Morissette landed the coveted position, one of just eight acrossthe country as part of the Public Servant-in-Residence programcoordinated by the Canada School of Public Service. She beganher two-year post in January. A few short months later, she saysshe’s already had a chance to jumpstart most of her plan ofaction.

Chief among her priorities is creating opportunities to share herexpertise with Glendon’s students and faculty. Morissette contri -bu tes to lectures and colloquia in the new School of Public andInternational Affairs, and she regularly steps forward to helpguide students in their career plans and quests for internships.“We develop contacts and networks to let the public serviceknow about the pool of very strong candidates in the hope thatwe can offer every student experience in the public service,” saysMorissette.

“It’s very practical to have her sit in on our courses and bringreal-world perspective to theoretical learnings,” says Master’s inPublic and International Affairs student Reem Abdel-Malek. “Shestirs up debate and makes us think about things we wouldn’tnor mally consider because we don’t have the same experience.”

Morissette is also opening doors between Glendon and her pu-b lic sector colleagues, both in Ottawa and in the Toronto area.A num ber of her contacts have appeared at Glendon as invitedguest speakers. They, too, have nothing but great things to sayabout Glendon and its students.

Says Morissette: “Glendon’s public and international affairs stu -dents are eager to learn, to shape their minds. They’re in the

process of developing opinions on key policy challenges andthey are naturally interested in the big picture.”

All of these characteristics, she believes, combine to make anideal recipe for the renewal of the public service.

“Our country needs ethical and dedicated public servants whoare prepared to give government solid advice on the best cour -ses of action. Glendon is preparing its students with this in mind,but its efforts need to be reinforced.”

That, in a nutshell, is exactly what Morissette is setting out to do.

Louis-Etienne Vigneault-Dubois has been to hell and back. TheGlendon graduate and head of communications for UNICEF’sLiberia office says he’s seen more than his share of hunger,abuse, illness and illiteracy. In the three months since landing inWest Africa, he has worked to promote children’s issues and theaid agency’s efforts in development and emer gency care withina country emerging from 14 devastating years of civil war.

Oftentimes, this means heading to the frontlines to talk toUNICEF’s partners running the projects.

“Every time you go out in the field, you can’t stay emotionless.Just go into a centre where they treat patients with cholera…”he says, pausing to put into words what he witnessed.

“If there’s a place that’s called hell on earth, it’s a cholera centre.”

Vigneault-Dubois arrived in Liberia in late 2008 no stranger tocivil and political unrest. While an international studies studentat Glendon, he spent time in both India and Hong Kong, andtravel led to Dakar, Senegal as a freelance journalist with SociétéRadio-Canada. While there, Vigneault-Dubois authored a tellingstory on excision that was awarded the first Daniel Pearl Prize,

named in honour of the American jour na list who waskidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002.

After graduating from Glendon in 2004 and comp le -ting a Master’s degree in journalism at Ecole de Jour -nalisme de Sciences Po in Paris, he landed in theDemoc ratic Republic of the Congo as an aid worker.Soon after, he was recruited by UNICEF, an orga ni za -tion Vigneault-Dubois came to know and respectduring his time in Senegal and India.

“They were doing the very same thing I wanted to do,but instead of asking questions, they were answeringthem.”

Despite the hellish conditions he’s witnessed in Haitiand now Liberia, he says it’s easy to see the glass ashalf full. “We’re never going to fix the world in acouple of years, so it really pays to focus on the smal -ler achievements.” Wins like the UNICEF-supportedCholera Treatment Unit at the John F. Kennedy Medi -cal Centre in Liberia, and promoting safe water, sani -ta tion and hygiene practices that can reach up to200,000 people in Monrovia.

Still, Vigneault-Dubois says it’s hard to tell what thefuture might hold, both for him personally and forLiberia.

“Right now this is a great combination of my inter na -tio nal studies and what I wanted to do as a jour nalist.”

Last May, when Burma was ground zero in the deadliest cyclone tohit that country in recorded history, Glendon graduate Kaila Mintz wasin her Canadian foreign affairs office running point on disasterresponse.

The 2004 political science and international studies grad is part of asmall team of policy advisors in the Government of Canada’s Huma -nitarian Affairs and Disaster Response group. While res pon sible princi -pally for humanitarian affairs in the Sudan, Kenya and the Horn ofAfrica, Mintz is also a member of Canada’s on-call natural disasterresponse team. In the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, she wor kedclosely with government colleagues in Ottawa and abroad and withhumani tarian actors to help deter mine what response was requi redand to recom mend a plan of action to the government.

“We are always on standby to coordinate the Government of Cana -da’s response or to be deployed to a disaster situation,” she says.

Since joining Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT)in February 2006, Mintz has travelled to Ethiopia and Kenya to meetwith government officials and aid agencies, and last fall she parti -cipated in the 63rd United Nations General Assem bly in New York. Inthe company of nearly 120 heads of state and government, Mintznego tiated on behalf of Canada on reso lutions related to huma ni ta -rian affairs. These resolutions are hel ping to shape future priorities onmatters of humanitarian assistance.

It‘s not the first time she has borne such heavy responsibility. In herfirst appointment as a bilateral relations officer in DFAIT’s Eastern andSouthern Africa division, Mintz spent two months in Cape Town,South Africa preparing for Governor-General Michaelle Jean’s firststate visit to that country.

She credits her experiences at Glendon with helping to ensure thetrip went off without a hitch.

“At Glendon, we were encouraged to look at the big picture and toget involved in our community,” remarks Mintz, who estab li shed theGlen don Alpine Club with a classmate. “Beyond acade mics, therewere many opportunities to take part in leadership activities.”

“I use those skills now,” she says. “Planning, facilitating group dyna - mics, problem-solving — it’s all part of my job at Foreign Affairs.”

After graduating in 2004, Mintz took a professor’s advice and appliedto the Ontario Legislature Internship Program where she worked withLiberal MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde and then-MPP Marilyn Churley of theNew Democratic Party. After a brief stint as a scribe in the OntarioLegis la ture, she joined the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“My next goal is to secure a posting abroad. My sights are set onAfrica,” she says. “I’m always open to trying new things. That’s largelybecause of Glendon.”

The 13th annual international studies symposium on Egypt, heldon the 23rd of February 2008, was executed successfully andreceived unmatched feedback from panelists and atten dees alikeon the fashion in which it was run and its accompli sh ment inexpelling myths about contemporary Egypt. The day-long confe -rence featured prominent scholars from Egypt, North Americaand Europe, including former Director of the WHO Dr. HabibaHassan-Wassef; Dr. Emad Shahin from Harvard Uni ver sity Schoolof Government; and Vice President of Cairo Uni ver sity Dr. HebaNassar; as well as government officials, diplo mats, policy makers,journalists and analysts from Canada and Egypt.

The Independent Study Committee on Egypt (ISCE) committeditself not only to the organization of the Symposium in its entirety,but also to three other components of this compre hen sive pro -ject, which included a seminar course in the fall semes ter, a fieldresearch trip that followed the symposium, as well as a student-written and -edited publication that includes the proceedings of

the conference. The organizing team were Anais Kadian, Hani ElMasry, Kate Bobko, Rachael Dempsy, Genevieve Light, LauraMontieth and Jenilee Ward. The aim of ISCE in hosting the sym -po sium was to broaden the knowledge and under standing ofEgypt within an international framework, streng then Canada-Egypt relations and cast out myths carried by many. The sympo -sium also attracted a large number of mem bers of the York Uni -ver sity community, students from the GTA, as well as membersof the Egyptian and Middle Eastern Community.

The day began with opening remarks from the ISCE and Prin -cipal Kenneth McRoberts. The Egyptian Embassy Deputy Chiefof Mission Dr. Hala El Bishlawy delivered the opening address,and gave a detailed and informative overview on modern Egypt.Guests were then asked to choose between three simultaneouspanels on topics of various interests. tional Security panel of Canada-Egypt relations and the role ofEgypt in the region. The committee received positive feedbackon the panel on Environmental Security where the debatebetween speakers and the guest interaction outlined anddiscussed many issues at stake. The panel on Democracy andCivil Society was the most popular, and the attendees wereenthusiastic about the debates that occurred between thespeakers, as well as the post-debate discussions.

The guests then made their way back to the Glendon DiningHall to enjoy a traditional Egyptian lunch, including salads,koshari (a popular rice and lentil dish served with fried onionsand hot sauces); mesakaa (fried eggplant with ground beef andtomato sauce); and baklava. Lunch was followed by an im -pres sive and vibriant cultural performance by dancers fromArabesque Dance Company.

The keynote address was a major highlight of the day. Intro -duced by President Emerita Dr. Lorna Marsden, Dr. FarkhondaHassan the head of the Egyptian National Council of Womentalked about the importance of Egypt’s role in the region as andwithin the international community. Dr. Hassan also talkedabout the developments and achievements Egypt witnessed,particularly those of Egyptian women in different venues. Dr. Hassan also congratulated the ISCE on hosting an importantconference that encompassed valuable discussion.

The afternoon panels were equally popular. The panels onHuman Rights and Minority Issues, and Society, Culture andReli gion attracted the most attendees. Both the panelists andthe guests experienced very concentrated discussions in thesepanels as many issues and matters were raised. The roundtablediscussion on Egyptian Economy and Development enjoyed amore intimate discussion that was based around developmentand the Egyptian economy in terms of history, politics and inter -national affairs, including human capital and the role of womenin the economy.

After a full day of academic discussion, theguests were invited to attend a wine andcheese reception in the historic GlendonManor, where they were given the oppor tu nityto converse with other guests and meet thespeakers. This reception allowed for reflectionon the information and in sights gleaned fromthe day’s panels. The effort of hosting such asuccessful event re qui red an enormous com -mit ment from everyone in vol ved, but it alsohad many rewards. Our sponsors and volun -teers also contributed a great deal to thesuccess of the event.

The ISCE began its field trip in Cairo, where we had the pleasureof attending a semi nar on Politics, Democ racy and the Oppo -sition in Egypt at Cairo Uni ver sity. The seminar was hosted by Dr. Heba Nassar (who also took part in the sympo sium) onbehalf of the Faculty of Econo mics and Poli ti cal Science. Amongthe scholars who spoke was Dr. Mostafa Kamel Al-Sayyed, partof the kefaya movement of opposition. The group then immer -sed itself in touring other parts of Egypt, including Luxor,Hurghada, the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab.

On return to Cairo, the committee mixed research with sight -seeing in other parts of Cairo. We also had the pleasure of visitingDr. Farkhonda Hassan at the National Council of Women, whowas kind enough to host lunch with Canadian Ambassador Philip MacKinnon. The committee was also invited by Dr. HabibaHassan-Wassef to attend the release of the Human DevelopmentReport of Egypt by the United Nations Develop ment Programmeand the National Institute of Statistics in Egypt, which was a greatfinale for the trip. The ISCE is currently working on amalgamatingsymposium proceedings for the publication.

Christine Dumitriu – Van Saanen, who died in April 2008, was particularly wellknown for her vital contributions to la franco phonie. Indeed, as a result of herdynamism, perseverance, intelligence and courage, the Salon du livre deToronto, which she founded and directed over a 13-year period, has enjoyedincreasing success at the provincial and even international levels. It wasprimarily for this action that she was inducted into the Order of Francophonesof America (2000) and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France (2004).

Less well known is the fact that she was also a great scholar with some 60 scien -ti fic articles and a treatise on sedimentology (that was translated into Romanianand English) to her credit. She was, as well, a dazzling lecturer and a worldrenowned wri ter, winning the Académie de Lutèce Gold Medal for her play Re -nais sance and the Grand Prize in Modern Poetry at the Jeux floraux de Touraine.Finally, she was an academic of high stan ding.

Invited by Glendon’s Department of Multidisciplinary Studies three years agoto teach an introductory course on earth and universe sciences, she proved tobe an outstanding educator who inspired enthusiasm and respect in her stu -dents. At the time of her death, she was putting the finishing touches on ascien tific textbook with her husband Mircea Dumitriu; it will be published by Éditions du Gref (see page 10) as a tribute to the memory of an exceptionalhuman being and as her supreme legacy to future generations (alteri saeculo).

It is a unique story at Glendon. In 1991, Mary Tan was boundfor a science degree at the University of Toronto or Waterloowhen a high school French teacher inspired a interest in theFrench language. She fell in love with Glendon during a MarchBreak visit. What surprised her maybe the most was theexperience of a closely-knit school where, at the end of herstudies, everyone knew her by her first name.

Mary’s choice of coming to Glendon to study in a liberal artsenvi ron ment, while graduating in Computer Science andMathe matics, has allo wed her to pursue a career in technicalwriting. Her career has taken her from Toronto to Minnesotaand then back to Toronto via Winnipeg. She has worked forIBM and now writes for Wirecard.co where she puts togethertrouble shooting guides while pursuing graduate studies intechnical commu ni cations in the States.

At her graduation ceremony in June 1995, Mary decided thatone day she was going to give a scholarship for Glendonstudents. With her career well launched and still inspired by astrong community spirit, Mary pledged her sup port to Glendonstudents. She started a fund that will mature into an entrancescholarship that qualifies for government matching funds.

Philippe Garigue was Principal of Glendon from 1980 to 1987. During this seven-year period, he garnered for our institution the reputation that it deserves. Hedeveloped the international studies program and, in particular, encouragedresearch and education concerning the European Union. He strengthened theties between Canada and France; for example, he took six York University deanswith him to the Élysée Palace, where he convinced then French PresidentFrançois Mitterrand to accept an honorary degree from Glendon.

Born in Manchester on October 13, 1913 into an ancient family that had emigra -ted from France during the Middle Ages, he completed his elementary andsecondary education in Paris. Following the war, he received a doctorate inanthropology from the London School of Economics.

Philippe Garigue enlisted in the British Armed Forces in 1939 and took part inthe African and European campaigns. He commanded the troops that liberatedAssisi; as a result of this action, the city was spared bombings and street battles.

He stood up to General De Gaulle’s representatives who wanted to see theincorporation of Val d’Aoste (a region that included francophones) into France,and managed to win the right to a free vote for the citizens in the region underhis administration. (Val d’Aoste, therefore, remained Italian.)

Philippe Garigue came to Canada in 1954 on the invitation of McGill Universityto develop research on French Canada. In 1957, he was appointed Dean of theFaculty of Social Sciences at the Université de Montréal, a post he held for 15 years. During this time, he created a number of departments and transformedthe social work educational program into a professional school. While carryingout his administrative duties, he was also the leader of a significant public action: he was appointed by the Government of Quebec as Chair of the AdvisoryCommittee for the Ministry of Social and Family Concerns; became Chair of theInternational Union of Family Organizations (an NGO of the UN); and becamean advisor to the federal Department of National Health and Welfare. He wasone of the founder-directors of the Vanier Family Institute.

He authored a number of books that solidified his reputation as a researcher:La Vie familiale des Canadiens français (PUF, 1962); Analyse du comportementfamilial (PUM, 1967, which won the Quebec Literary Prize); and Famille, Scienceet Politique (Leméac, 1973). Although his reflections on Quebec society irkedsome of the intelligentsia, it is now acknowledged by sociologists and politicalscientists that these reflections were prophetic in nature. (Linda Cardinal of theUniversity of Ottawa is preparing an anthology of Garigue’s writings devoted toQuebec.)

Philippe Garigue was also a poet. As rigorous in his thinking as he was in his writing, he published several collections that receivedcritical recognition: Le Temps vivant (Leméac, 1974), L’Humaine Demeure (Leméac, 1974), De la condition humaine (Gref, 1995),Le Temps de l’intelligence (Gref, 1999; winner of the Prize of the Consulate General of France) and Les Lieux de ma mémoire : uneintroduction à la poésie de la Société-Monde (Gref, 2002). He had long meditated on the works of Dante (whom he read in theoriginal) and, just before his death on March 25, 2008, was working on a new manuscript on this subject entitled Le Quotidien del’existence (conversations avec mon ange gardien).

For several generations of students, his teaching was a model of rigour, openness and intelligence. For those colleagues who benefitedfrom their contact with him and followed him on his intellectual journey, Philippe Garigue was – in the fullest sense of the word –a master.

There still must be some members of the Glendon communitywho remember Janet Warner. She was a valued member of theEnglish Department from the late sixties until the her retirementin the early nineties, during which time, her petite, vibrant andstylishly dressed figure could often be seen darting around thecollege, in C-wing especially. She was a much appreciatedlecturer and tutorial leader and her great passion for the poetryof William Blake led to the publication of her book Blake andthe Language of Art.

Even retirement did not slow her creativity down for it wasduring that time that she took up pottery and — always an avidreader of novels, both classic and contemporary — wrote herown novel, Other Sorrows, Other Joys, about the life of Blake,told, interestingly, from the point of view of his wife. Encou ragedby its acclaim, she was at work on a second novel which unfor -tu nately she was unable to complete before her death.

Janet was a great “mental traveller”, to use the title of one ofBlake’s poems, not only in her work on Blake and her exemplaryteaching of a wide range of English literature but also in herinterests in related fields such as painting and music. She wasalso a keen traveller in the more conventional sense, a passionthat ran throughout her life until the end. She enthusiasticallyexplored England and the Mediterranean countries over many

years. Not even illness could slow her down as it was shortlyafter her final operation that she was able to squeeze in aneleven-day visit to Barcelona, accompanied by her daughter,Renée. Probably, the most adventurous of her many expeditionswas her hike through the foothills of the Himalayas. She wassupposed to go with a companion but the companion had todrop out at the very last moment. Undeterred, Janet decided tocontinue on her own, and, for a couple of weeks, she could befound hiking alone through the foothills with her two guidesand/or menservants dutifully following her a few paces behind.

It is to celebrate Janet’s belief that travel broadens, enriches,even humanizes, and to honour her memory by enabling stu -dents to experience more of that world, that the English Depart -ment, along with Janet’s family, friends and former students,have created The Janet Warner Travel Award

Gifts to celebrate and honour Janet Warner’s life and love of tra -velling may be made to York University Foundation/GlendonCol lege Janet Warner Travel Award to benefit Glendon studentsassociated with the study of English and allow them to expe -rience more of the world. Each year, a candidate will be chosenby application to the Department of English, Glendon College;both academic standing and the nature of the pro jec ted travelwill be taken into consideration.

Family, colleagues, friends and students remembered GlendonProfessor Daniel Simeoni as an outstanding educator, dedicatedresearcher and loyal friend at a memorial November 6 at Glen -don Gallery. A professor in the School of Translation and directorof the School’s Master’s program, Simeoni died November 4,2007 of complications following a heart attack. He was 58.

“Though he was a man of books — a true bibliophile as well asa dedicated researcher — Daniel was also and especially a manof passionate conversation, of intense friendships and of greatloyalties,” Sherry Simon, a professor in Concordia University’sDépartement d’Études françaises, said in moving tribute read byLyse Hébert, Simeoni’s PhD student and a faculty member in theSchool of Translation. Michael Cronin of the School of AppliedLanguage and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City Uni versityjoined Hébert in speaking of Simeoni’s many contri bu tions to thefield. Tributes were also sent from Alexis Nouss of the Universityof Montreal and Cardiff University in Wales and from Montrealartist Boris Chukhovich who presented an exhi bition of webdesigns that were crafted in collaboration with the late academic.

A Glendon faculty member since 1999, Simeoni was widelyrecognized for his contributions to both the theory and thesociology of translation. In the months prior to his death, he

founded the Research Group on Translation and TransculturalCon tact and was working on a proposal for a new doctoral pro-g ram in translation.

“In the short time that Daniel was at York, he won the friendshipand admiration of colleagues in all the programs he workedwith,” Candace Séguinot, then Chair of Glendon’s School ofTranslation, said last year.

On November 4, Simeoni received the Faculty of Graduate Stu dies Teaching Award. Translation master’s candidate AlanaChal mers led the nomination and was on hand to accept theaward on behalf of her late professor. “Daniel Simeoni was agreat edu cator, a successful writer, a superb academic and criti -cal thin ker.”

“The students he had taught are his legacy. With this award, wewanted to honour his memory and his achievements.”

“The work Daniel was doing was exciting,” Simon agreed, “andhe conveyed this sense of excitement to his students and to his readers. Daniel’s work has already received a significantaudience. But this audience will increase as there will certainlybe new publications, both of and on his work.“

Thanks to the extraordinary commitment of faculty, staff andretirees, the York to the Power of 50 Family Cam paign hassurpassed its goal and is still going strong.

More than 2,060 University faculty, staff and retirees, includingthose at Glendon College, have made donations or pledgessince the launch of the campaign. The results top the goal tohave 2,009 participants by the end of 2009, York’s 50th anni -versary year.

“We’re absolutely delighted by the response of our past andcurrent colleagues and not at all surprised,” says York ProfessorRon Pearl man, Family Campaign co-chair with Ross Rudolph,a political science professor and Senior Advisor to the Vice-Pre -sident Academic, and retired staff member and YURA advisorNancy Accinelli. “York’s family members have a long history ofcaring about the future of our University and its students.”

Family Campaign donors gave to the projects that meant themost to them, including athletics, the libraries and student aid.A significant number of current and former faculty and staffmembers supported scholarships and bursaries established inhonour and in memory of colleagues. The Daniel Simeoni Fundfor graduate students in finan cial need, for example, was for medafter Daniel Simeoni, a professor in Glendon’s School of Trans -lation and director of the School’s mas ter’s program, died in2007. Donors also celebrated the life of the late Glendon EnglishProfessor Janet Warner through the Janet Warner Travel Fund.

Glendon’s Family Campaign has benefited from the superbleadership of Alain Baudot, chair of the faculty and staff pro -g ram within Glen don’s Leadership for Global Challenges Cam -paign. Together with a team of hard-working and enthu siasticvolun teers, Baudot is helping to raise awareness and create acam pus-wide culture of giving in support of Glendon’s stu -dents, programs and infrastructure.

“Students need our support now more than ever,” says Pearl man. Building on the success of the Family Campaign andin celebration of York’s 50th anniversary this year, faculty, staffand retirees are invited to support the 50th AnniversaryBursaries and Awards program created to provide critical, ex -pen dable funds that can be distributed to students right away.

Adds Pearlman: “It’s been an extraordinarily difficult year forstu dents. The funds will relieve some of the financial burdenof paying for school and allow students to focus on their stu -dies and their involvement on campus and in the community.”

The former Supreme Court justice who prescribed a 10-year moratorium on a natural gas pipeline down the Mackenzie River Valleydelivered the 17th annual John Holmes Memorial Lecture at Glendon on March 31st.

It has been 32 years since Thomas Berger, a lawyer and retired jus tice of the B.C. Supreme Court, headed the Royal Commission ofnorthern energy development that included the vivid reminder that “we are now at our last frontier.”

“The recommendations we made (in the Berger report) havebeen gradually adopted over a 30-year period, instead of theori ginally anticipated 10,” Berger told Glendon’s audience. Manyof the abori ginal land claims have been settled, and vast areashave been set aside for protecting wildlife and honouring abo -riginal culture and ways of living. An agreement has also beensigned guaranteeing that if a pipeline is built in the future, one-third of the financial bene fit would go to the First Nations wholive there.

“While many problems still remain in the Mackenzie Valley,there has been major progress toward aboriginal self-govern -ment, lan guage protection and the safeguarding of porcupinecaribou herds.”

At the request of the Canadian government, Berger returned to Nuna vut in 2005 to follow up his 1977 report with a study ofnor thern edu ca tion and employment. His 2006 report, calledThe Nuna vut Project, recommended bilingual educa tion to helppre pare northern residents for the work of the future. Seventyper cent of Nunavut’s residents speak Inuktitut; as many as 15% have no second language, which prevents them frombeing able to fill many of the available jobs.

Glendon Professor Ian Martin, coordinator of the Certificate inthe Discipline of Teaching English as an International Language,was one member of the government-led team charged withdesigning a program of bilingual education involving immersionin both lan guages from kindergarten to grade 12. Although thebilingual format was implemented, it hasn’t had the anticipatedresults. Students studying Inuktitut for the first four years andEnglish for the rest of their education were unable to read orwrite proficiently in either lan guage. Frustrated, a growing num -ber are choosing to drop out of school.

Glendon is proof that bilingual education can be successful, saysBerger.

“We need to educate the Inuit young so that they can benefitfrom the jobs that will be created. It is our duty to ensure thatthey are not just spectators of their land’s development, but fullytrained par ti cipants. We have an obligation to keep our promiseto help them succeed.”

A newly inked partnership between Glendon Collegeand Ontario’s leading French-language communitycollege will help to prepare gra duates for careers inthe field of communications.

York University signed a formal agreement at Glen -don on March 23, establishing a partnership betweenGlendon and Ottawa’s Cité collégiale. The French-language community college of applied arts andtech nology offers 85 programs and welcomes 15,000students annually.

“This partnership establishes an important colla bo -ration, providing greater access to post-secondaryeducation in French in Ontario and assisting ourstudents in the pursuit of a university education,” saysCité collégiale President Andrée Lortie. She empha -sized the benefits of combining the practical trainingprovided at community college with the theoreticaleducation available at universities such as Glendon.“Well aware that it is what today’s employers require,students are looking for both components.”

First-year Cité collégiale student Krystal Mathieu agrees. “The new combined program will be a unique opportunity for a thorough pre -paration for the labour market in French,” she says. “I am seriously considering enrolling in the Glendon BA in 2010, once I completemy Cité collégiale diploma.”

The two institutions are also exploring the possibility of developing a Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication, which would com -p rise courses offered at Glendon and result in a double accre dita tion for students. Beginning this September, graduates from La Citécollégiale’s public relations program will have access to Glen don courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies.

Glendon already has a longstanding history of preparing students for careers in the field of communications. Among its alumni, the Col lege is proud to count political commentator and journalist Chantal Hébert; Rhéal Séguin, Quebec correspondent for The Globe andMail; Christopher Hume of the Toronto Star; and Denis Massicotte, editor of the Hill Times, Canada's politics and government news -weekly in Ottawa.

Collaborations with French community colleges represent an essential aspect of Glendon’s mission as the Centre of Excellence forFrench-Language and Bilingual Postsecondary Education. Glendon already enjoys a successful partnership with Sudbury’s Collège Boréal.

“With agreements of this kind, Glendon will be in a better position to satisfy the needs of its Francophone and Francophile students,”says Glendon Principal Ken McRoberts.

MULTICULTURALISM AND ITS DISCONTENTS SYMPOSIUM • SEPT. 24 TO 25Designed as a public event, featured speakers will include a wide selection of Canada’s best-known social commentators, journa -lists, pollsters, scholars, artists, and representatives of “multicultural” groups.

ART GALLERY MEETS THE SCIENCE FAIR: AMBIVALENT OBJECTS AT THE INTERSECTION OF ART AND SCIENCE • OCT. 5 TO 18An exhibit of collaborations by students from the arts and sciences, these “ambivalent objects” will be displayed within a spacethat blurs the boundary of an art gallery and a science fair.

TIME WARP JAZZ ORCHESTRA • OCT. 6A special evening concert combining the noted York jazz ensemble Time Warp with a number of other well-known artists. Thecon cert will be recorded for potential release on York’s record label.

WOMEN’S STUDIES LECTURE: LIVING LE DEUXIÈME SEXE – EXPERIENCES IN TRANSLATION • OCT. 20A new English translation of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex will be published in November 2009, 60 years after the path-breaking feminist book first appeared. At the invitation of York’s School of Women’s Studies, the Paris-based translators, SheilaMalovany-Chevallier and Constance Borde, will speak about Simone de Beauvoir, their work and the history of the project.

BODYWORKS SYMPOSIUM: INTERSECTIONS IN SPORT, ART AND CULTURE • NOV. 5 TO 6The Bodyworks Symposium will actively create new alliances and exchanges between professionals in sports and the arts, re -search groups, policy-makers and the general public.
