LYNNE ROBERTS-GOODWIN

The works of Sydney-based artist Lynne Roberts-Goodwin centre on the pivotal conceptual foundations of landscape and the non-human body as a record and aftermath of human values and actions imposed over time coupled with extreme locations in terms of the geopolitical, remote topographical, institutional, topological and culturally estranged. The artist’s work and research surrounding these conceptual underpinnings, inspects visual representations of man-made and ‘natural’ landscapes that appear as ‘other’ in more than one way and are centered within locations or through histories of contested sites or geopolitically contested remote or elevated topographical territories. Confronting representations and terrains from different parts of the globe, Roberts-Goodwin invites us to engage with unfamiliar contexts and global structures of environmental conflict and sites of impact. Relinquished landscapes produced in different temporal and spatial locales in light of each other are laid bare and investigated, scrutinized and visually represented as a mode of seeing and as a site of control and resistance, intertwined with social and economic power structures. Lynne Roberts-Goodwin’s photographic work and installations can be seen as an aftermath of the fragmentary and enigmatic qualities of the photographic document as a path to return afresh to what we think we know of the past, and how we think we know it through present engagement and dissemination. The artist, within her imagery, engages the lens of ‘spatial aesthetics’; that is, ‘the complex entanglements between local and global ideas of place’.Within this artists’ long-standing career and work, the photographed landscape, animal, and/or human body continues to appear in a paradoxical whole yet fragment: pure from construction yet bearing witness to both creation and loss. These traces of culture, histories, conflict, impact and intervention which the artist calls “details of the world,” appear like scars on a body and convey a similar tale of wounds scarcely healed. Roberts-Goodwin has photographed these metaphorical landscapes, bodies and traces within specific sites located in Mexico, India, Japan, Nth America, United Arab Emirates, Syria, Jordan, Iran and since 1997 to the current 2014 series of works, MORE THAN EVER, undertaken remote-location projects related to cultural impact, difference and belonging. Roberts-Goodwin is engaged with the ambiguities of terrestrial and earthbound fields of vision speculating on a kind of palimpsest on which both the disfiguring and beautification marks of decades of conflict continue to be recorded in the present.Roberts-Goodwin has earned international acclaim for her photographs and photo-based installations, that investigate the presence and cultural impacts of the detritus of human experience on landscapes, ruins and terrains, as well as her more introspective works which explore the animal body, perception and its indelible link to place. In addition, Roberts-Goodwin is known for the production of multiples that frequently are created in concert with the photographic, object and film/video series.

Contemporary is a gallery space that aims to create a cross cultural conversation through showing and supporting emerging and established artists from around the world. We aim to foster a strong appreciation

in Australian audiences for a new generation of foreign and domestic artists and to expose both novice and established collectors to these works.

By curating interactive exhibitions .M Contemporary aims to serve as a platform that introduces all mediums of art ranging from traditional to digital video art, interactive and immersive installations, showcasing the skill, creativity and concepts of artists within these mediums from around the world. .M Contemporary has a strong focus on supporting these artists ongoing presence through regular exhibitions, complemented by industry expert panel discussions, artist talks, social events and more.

Recognising the need for broader participation and exposure to art, .M Contemporary is also opening up itself to schools, universities and other parties as a platform for education where an appreciation for global and local contemporary art is inspired and nourished.
