The six points

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.(e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images.(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music.(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There are often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Lyrics and Visuals

“Doesn’t it feel, like our time is running out?” On this lyric the lead singer (Patrick Stump) Is tied to a chair in dark black out room. Like a torture chamber

This song is about the world falling apart and those who love rock (This case known as “Young Bloods”) need to do something about it

Music and Visuals

When the chorus starts and the beat kicks in it shows the lead singer being tortured. The rest of the time it shows the rest of his band mates being captured. Lip syncing shows emotion and pain he’s feeling.

Record Company

In this cause the record company for Fall Out Boy have created three music videos which follow on from each other. They are known as The Young Blood chornicles and when completed there will be 11 in total. This is to promote the band as no other band has band music videos for a whole album. The songs so far are:

▪ My Song’s know what you did in the dark (Light em up)▪ The Phoenix▪ Young Volcanoes

Page 7: Goodwin’s theory of Music Videos

There is frequently reference to notion of looking The whole music is set around the

band and them being kidnapped/ tortured. This shows that they are important.

intertextual reference

The Opening to the song is similar to one of a film showing that there is another part to the song in a different music video. It also has the title to the song in large letters
