January 11 -17, 2015MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition

By M. A. SADANAND

NO HOLDS BARREDSoulful Music

Daughter Neethi phoned that she had attended a soulfulmusic concert in Bangalore by Balamuralikrishna, e-ticketed by her son Manu who has been lent to a New YorkBank by T.C.S for a project.

That is the best way to listen to soulful music, for all youhave to do is to lend your ears while the son spends!

I have heard this genius sing at concerts, and met andconversed with him long ago when I was a junior of aforensic magician G.Ramaswamy who rose to be theAttorney General of India. I felt great to be in the companyof two giants which boosts the soul to plains unexplored.Yesudas, M.S.Subbalakshmi and the other soul-raisershave made ears the most coveted organs in our body.

But the difficulty faced by the common man who is onlya listener, not a performer, is that he does not even try tofill the void when the hero vanishes. There should beseveral strings to the bow so that, when one snaps, theother could continue to twang to make life perhaps evenmore beautiful soulfully.

Towards this I think Vijay TV encourages young boysand girls to learn and sing and compete musically so thatlife, which is not a beautiful song to most, could, with amusical string to its bow, be made to sound less onerousand more sonorous and elevating.

Music that shuts out all the discordant sounds of every-day living is like the presence of a good friend and acts likea slave. If, apart from what is dished out by the TV, youcan add your original outpourings, the satisfaction wouldbe doubled, for you are not a mere imitator but a maker too,and possibly pleaseothers wanting to listen.

That is one of the ‘give and take’ of life, highly prized bygood hearted people. How is that for a trophy?

Happy 2015!

Concreted section of Govindan Street in bad condition

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, Govindan Street which connects North Usman Road and G.N. ChettyRoad has a steady flow of vehicular traffic. A concreted stretch of about 100meters of the road closer to G.N. Chetty Road junction has been in a badlydamaged condition for over two years. It not only causes hindrance to motoristsbut also throws up lots of dust when a vehicle passes, thereby causing pollutionin the neighbourhood. I appeal to Corporation officials to take remedial action.—S. Rajagopalan, T. Nagar

Kudos to Mambalam Timesfor its diversity in

news contentSir, Thanks to your pioneering

efforts, a number of neighbourhoodnewspapers have sprouted inChennai. However few can matchthe diversity of your editorial content.Though it is common forneighbourhood newspapers to carryonly local events and civic issues, itis quite rare to read reports like ‘CB-CID to probe youth’s alleged torturein police custody’ as had appeared inMambalam Times last week. It is inthis context I wish to congratulateMambalam Times for its boldapproach to report such matterswhich are equally a part and parcelof neighbourhood news. The latestreport reveals that the probe by theCB-CID has confirmed theinvolvement of three police personnelin the sexual torture of the youth. While the police sometimes have toresort to ‘third’ degree methods toferret out the truth, this is a dastardlyact and the offenders need to besuitable punished to set an exampleto other officials in the department.– K. Harihar, 20, Brindavan Street,West Mambalam
