Meet Brian T. Shirley

A conversation with Mr. Shirley…

Hello. What is your name? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business? Brian T Shirley and I've been an entertainer for over 20 years, around 24 in total.

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation? Since I was young I wrote crazy skits and silly saying. I was on the school newspaper in High School and has my own column. I was always funny around my friends and when I was in the USAF, it seemed to fall on me to help with the entertainment at the squadron functions. Whether it be writing or performing sketches. Then when I got out of the service and was looking for what I wanted to do with my life, I joined a workshop to learn about Stand-Up comedy. The first time I got onstage, I fell in love with it and have not stopped since.

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most? Other comedians have taken me under their wings at different times in my career. I think I've been inspired by a lot of the folks I've met along the way. A veteran Comedian/singer/songwriter named Darryl Rhoades really took me on the road with him and I learned a lot. We still talk once in a while and I consider him one of my best friends now. I try to learn from everyone and also help them if I can.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far? Recently I sold out 2 shows in Pittsburgh, PA and the club seated 240 people, that's not to bad. It was my second time there and I was blown away, they had to turn people away. I have created and now host The BTS Radio Show which will be a year old the end of the month and I have enjoyed it immensely. I've also published 3 comedy books and I'm a featured guest on The Will Roberts Weekly Telegram Radio Program. I've been fortunate to play The Atlantis Resort on paradise Island Bahamas, twice and I've performed aboard Carnival Cruise Lines.

Have you received any special awards or achievements? No awards as of yet, but I have been a special guest judge in 4 different comedy competitions over the last several years. I also was told by one of my guests on The BTS Radio Show, Sheilah D Smiley, that she's teaching comedy/ acting classes and she wants to use parts of my third book 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Club" to help with her instruction. She told me this live, on air which really surprised me.

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up? I'm heading down to Naples, Fla. to headline the Old Naples Comedy Club for the first time and I'll be shooting episode #5 of my web series "BTS On The Road" while I'm there. I'm also involved with a TV special that will hopefully be airing sometime this summer. I had the idea the film the last Comedy Competition I was a judge for and I also performed while the votes were tabulated. We hope to edit the footage and show what it takes to put one of these together, what the comics are like on and off stage, the whole process. I've been tapped to play a crooked preacher (Brother Hoper) in a western (Forgiven: This Gun 4 Hire) that's looking for funding and also been asked to do a scene in a comedy club for another film (The Mentor) in the production phase.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? I would like to be in a position to do the gigs I want to rather than the gigs I have to. Also, maybe growing The BTS Radio Show in The BTS TV Show. I also hope to have a few more books out and more TV/Movie appearances.

What would you like your legacy to be? That I helped as many people as I could, I looked out for the little people, such as myself and I made folks laugh out loud!!

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer? I do like to write serious subjects as well. I have a SCI/FI story that was published in an online magazine called Schlock. I also try to promote charity events and organizations on my Radio Show as much as I can.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers? I think that when we help each other, it always comes back to ourselves. We should lift each other up, those that do are the real stars or celebrities if you ask me.

Born in 1977, and raised in the age of video rentals, Jason Turner is an avid movie watcher,

but his true passion is for acting. "Acting is what I do best. Restraint. Not mugging for the

camera. I prefer to let the imagination go, and use sense memory and total belief in the

moment-to-moment reality. I forget the camera is there, and let things happen."

Watching led to a love of writing, producing, and directing. "You can learn more about

films just by studying them from a point of view that is not simply audience or spectator. I

look at films as entertainment first. If they are well made, I look at them again, as a

student." When other projects had slipped away, he took charge and began to write and

produce his own works. From past frustrations, DARKTRAIN FILMS was born in 2001.

"I'm taking past ideas that were less developed and breathing new life into them from an

older, more experienced, eye and actor to them. My brother, Trevor Turner, is a gifted

writer and we have some ideas that are still relevant today. Some long scripts and

brainstorming sessions that will make new projects come forward."

Hello. What is your name? How long have you been involved in the entertainment business?

My name is Jason Turner. I have been involved in local entertainment, in various roles for the past 10 years.

When did you know that you wanted to be in this business and what was your motivation?

I have an eye for talent and am very good at networking with creative people. It’s an energy that is very easy to harness.

Who has helped you along the way and inspired you the most?

My two children inspire me quite a bit and I teach them the difference between make believe and reality. If they have a question about films I work on, I answer honestly and keep them in the loop.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far?

I have been in some very fun projects over the years, but I feel the best is yet to come. I did do a project called Matrix, by A Stranger's Craft. We

Have you received any special awards or achievements? My team won a Motion Graphics award from the KC Arts Council last year for "MATRIX."

Do you have any special events, shows / gigs coming up?

I do have a project I am executive producing called the Iron City Chronicles. It's a film noir futuristic mystery story. I am playing a private eye in this one.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? A successful actor and producer that travels but is based in Kansas City.

What would you like your legacy to be? I want to have to stories that make people smile but also think.

Do you have other interests? What services does your company offer?

I do photography and voice acting. Narration and character voices for animation, film and commercials.

Any special words of encouragement or advice for our readers?

My advice is to always give your best at all times. Every person that you touch with your work, from the crew to the producer is important to projects.

Jason recently produced in association with 2sDay Productions, the music videos “Rough Day” and “Always” for Dreamin’ Out Loud Entertainment artist Katelyn McCarter.

Cover Story

Derek Charles Johnson is a singer/songwriter and church worship leader residing in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Although a

life-long musician and music-lover, Derek’s path into a music career has been anything but typical. “Upon graduating

high school, I found myself going straight into college to pursue what I thought would be a life-long occupation. But

along the way, God started to burden my heart for something completely different. I came to accept that God had other

plans!” Derek finished 6 years of studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo with a degree in pharmacy. After

several years of being a pharmacist, he began to feel a tug to go back to school for something different. “It weighed

heavily on my heart to do something within the ministry…several men and women in my family had attended Bible

College and were working in the church in some capacity. I felt like God was calling me in that direction as well. I also

had a huge interest in music, so I wanted to do something that involved worship.”

Derek and his family moved to attend Bible school in Ellendale, North Dakota, home of Trinity Bible College. This move

proved to be the start of a new path which he now clearly felt. “Looking back, I can see that God laid out all of the steps

necessary to bring my family and I into ministry. My wife and I both are active in leadership at our church and none of

that would’ve been possible without God’s call.” Derek has been a worship leader at New Life Fellowship, his home

church in Aberdeen since 2011.

The debut album for Derek Charles Johnson entitled “Carry On,” in many ways came about during his time of transition

into ministry. “I felt like I was making this 180 degree turn in my life and God was giving me these songs along the way

to encourage me and help me trust in Him. It was a totally new path and one that could often feel lonely and difficult. I

figured if these songs had some meaning for my journey, they might be encouraging for others as well.” Ten songs in all,

Carry On takes the listener on a musical landscape and encourages worship throughout. From the album’s upbeat

opener “Makes Me Wanna Sing,” to the hard-charging “Carry On” and finally to the closing ballad, “Take Me Away,” the

tracks are an encouragement to those in the Christian faith. “When I started picking songs for this release, there were

10 or so that just seemed to ‘fit’ and made sense somehow. I know there was a reason for that beyond just randomly

piecing an album together with songs I’ve written over the years. These songs have a lot of meaning for me and through

the grace of God I’ve been given the opportunity to share them with a larger audience.”

Page 19: Mackie May /Jjune 2014 Issue 3

18

Derek’s personal favorites from the album? “It’s hard to choose because they’ve all been through the process of just

being an idea and then growing into a full-fledged song. I have to thank my producer, Tommee Profitt, for bringing

these songs to life and transforming them. But some of my personal favorites are Carry On, King of Glory, and You Are

Good.”

Carry On – This song just started with a guitar riff that I had been playing around with for a while. Once the lyrics and

the concept for the song emerged, it came together relatively quickly (which doesn’t always happen!). It also felt like a

good title for the album…Carry On. I love the imagery of Paul in Philippians 3:14, ‘I press on toward the goal to win the

prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.’ Paul’s attitude puts things into perspective for me; I can

get so caught up in what this life offers and focus on my own comforts and needs.

King of Glory – In all honesty, King of Glory is just a straight-up worship song. I like it for its simplicity as a song that can

be in a worship set and can draw people in. It’s a song that acknowledges God as King and Lord over all. He is infinite,

we are finite. He is eternal, our days have a beginning and an end. For that reason, He is worthy of praise!

You Are Good – You Are Good is deeply personal for me and the journey my family and I have been on. It was one of the

last songs I wrote for the album and I’m truly glad it made the cut! It really speaks of following Christ through the ups

and downs and ultimately keeping our eyes fixed on Him. When it states “In the longing, I wait for You…In this in-

between, I wait for You,” that’s really about Heaven. We wait in anticipation for Christ’s return…for our reunion with

Him. And despite what we face in this life, the promise of Heaven far outweighs it all!

In starting a new venture musically, Derek looks to the future with great expectation. “My ultimate hope is that God is

glorified and lifted up through this album and ministry. My desire is to say ‘Let Your will be done through this God. Let

me get out the way so You can move through these songs and touch hearts.’ There are so many who need to know the

love of Jesus and come into a personal relationship with Him. If I can be used in the process in any way, it will all be

worth it.”

B ON THE

L KOUT

For Toni Henson Slade

“I hope my last breath is taken while helping someone.” – Toni

Toni is a native of Warner Robins, Georgia, where she resides with her wonderful husband, Lance, and their incredible 9-year-old son,

Spencer! Lance is a pediatrician in Macon, Georgia, and Toni is the founder & chief executive officer of their charitable organization,

“Project Giving, Inc,” which was birthed from Toni’s elementary school classroom 15 years ago. Project Giving is a 501©(3) non-profit

organization who is passionately dedicated to “Building Bridges of Hope” for families throughout our communities in many various

manners, but especially for those who are suffering from chronic medical illnesses. They “Build Bridges of Hope” by funding travel expenses

to and from medical treatments (plane tickets, gas, food, & lodging), supplying mortgage/rental payments, providing for utility and electric

bills, performing home renovations and make-overs, stocking pantries, cutting grass, as well as, many other unique and practical means of

meeting a family’s needs.

Lance and Toni are active triathletes, having traveled the country competing in numerous sprint triathlons, an Olympic triathlon, and 7 Half

Ironman. Fourteen months after Toni suffered a fully ruptured Achilles Tendon and surgical repair, she completed The Memorial Hermann

Full Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, & 26.2 mile run) in The Woodlands, Texas in May 2013!!! (Lance “Superman” Slade completed

two Full Ironman competitions while Toni was in Achilles recovery!) Lance’s and Toni’s primary motivation for participating in the Memorial

Hermann Ironman Texas 2013 was to raise funds for their charity! The “life verse” for their organization is, “Share One Another’s Burdens”

(Galatians 6:1). Bearing the burden of plane tickets, mortgage payments, and home renovations are not cheap endeavors; therefore, it

takes a tremendous amount of funding to be successfully operational and to “Build Bridges of Hope” for families who are battling for their

lives. Toni is, also, an accomplished singer/songwriter and recording artist, having recorded three contemporary Christian CD’s! The first is

entitled “You’ll Never Walk Alone;” the second, “Whatever It Takes,” and the third, “Given Away.” She has traveled all over the country

engaging audiences of all shapes and sizes, from prominent conventions to the more intimate of venues. Lance and Toni, also, have a heart

for world missions, especially medical missions, to third world countries such as Africa, Haiti, Mexico, Honduras, and South America.

Toni taught elementary school for several years, educating kindergarten – 5th grade students in the field of music, as well as, teaching general education for self-contained 2nd & 4th students. She obtained her Bachelor of Liberal Arts

Degree from Mercer University in the field of Communications and received her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia College and State University. Toni’s life’s purpose, passion, and devotion is to actively demonstrate her love for God by “Building Bridges of

Hope” for the most broken, vulnerable, and frail people in our communities.

Hello my name is Michael Cooper aka Coop and I am the host of the show”
