DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM OPENS DOORS FOR PTC GRAD

Grace Alger, like many students her age, has recently started working toward her bachelor’s degree. For the 2017 Mid-Carolina High School graduate, this will be her second college degree, thanks to the dual enrollment classes she took from Piedmont Technical College.

“I wanted to get a head start for college and I wanted to see if it would help me prepare myself to go to a four-year school,” Alger said. “Once I started taking dual enrollment classes, I realized I really liked the classes I was taking.”

While at Mid-Carolina, Alger was able to take only two classes each semester. But she made the decision to branch out and do more. Through summer and online classes, she was able to complete her associate in arts degree in May 2017, three weeks before she graduated from high school.

Alger is attending the University of South Carolina this fall, pursuinga double major in art and comparative literature. Her goal is to become either a college professor or a translator. Not only is she starting as a junior, she was also selected as part of the Capstone Scholars Program, an invitation-only program at USC.

LANDER UNIVERSITY AND PIEDMONT TECH TO OFFER ENHANCED BRIDGE PROGRAMA historic agreement,

the Bearcat Bound

Bridge Program is

a dual admissions

partnership between

Lander University and

Piedmont Technical

College. After a

student is admitted

into the Lander

transfer track at

Piedmont Tech, there is now a process in place that will

usher them through the admissions process at Lander —

guaranteeing admission to Lander University as long as

transfer requirements are met by the student while at PTC.

The program will provide prospective transfer students

who meet the minimum GPA requirement of a 2.0 and

a minimum of 30 hours of college-level coursework

with advising and academic support for a guaranteed

transfer of credit from PTC to Lander. Additionally,

students who transfer to Lander before completing an

associate degree will be able to easily transfer credit

back to PTC to complete that credential while working

toward their bachelor’s degree.

Participants will also benefit from an array of services that

will improve their transition from PTC to Lander. They

will be issued a Lander University student identification

card, which gives students access to all campus facilities,

including the fitness center, pool and other on-campus

amenities, as well as free entrance into sporting events

and fine arts performances. Students will also have

access to dual academic advisement by professionals at

both PTC and Lander.

PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGE OFFERS NIGHT WELDING CLASSESPiedmont Tech and the Newberry County School

District have formed a partnership to offer the PTC

welding program at night beginning in the fall. The

program is expected to expand to the full certificate

offering in spring 2018 pending SACSCOC approval of

the Newberry County Career Center as an off-campus

instructional site.

“The Newberry County School District is very excited

to partner with PTC to provide welding classes at the

Newberry County Career Center which allows our students

and community members an opportunity to obtain a basic

welding certificate,” said Jim Suber, superintendent of the

Newberry County School District. “We also envision our

adult education students being able to take

advantage of this program as well.”

Based on the agreement, welding courses will be offered

at the Newberry County Career Center leading to the

basic welding certificate. Classes will be offered in the

evening, two days a week, during the fall and spring.

The summer schedule may vary, depending on needs

of the students and availability of the instructors. Upon

completion of the credit hours, students will be eligible

for graduation with a basic welding certificate.

MODELS ACADEMY PROGRAM ADOPTED AT PIEDMONT TECHThrough a new program at Piedmont Technical College

called MODELS Academy, the college is taking action to

address a problem of national proportions.

“There continues to be a crisis among African American

males in education,” said Steve Coleman, director of

Genesis Initiatives.

In the U.S., more than two-thirds of African American men

who start college do not graduate within six years, which

is the lowest college completion rate among both sexes

and all racial/ethnic groups in higher education.

MODELS (Men Of Distinction, Elite Leaders and

community Servants) Academy was based on several

organizations around the country including Call Me

MISTER, and 100 Black Men.

The program is targeted to young men in grades

6-12 who have already exhibited potential. Currently,

53 students are participating in the program from

Abbeville, Greenwood and Newberry counties.

Students are recommended by guidance counselors

or community members. Coleman said the students

they want to help are those who have already proven

potential that often fall through the cracks.
