LETTERS TO THE EDITORPoor fire safety compliance in T. Nagar’s
commercial hubSir, On Sept. 12 our Association had a meeting with the DC
(L&O, Mambalam Police Station) and handed over a copy ofthe report filed by Dept. of Fire and Rescue Services in MadrasHigh Court based on its physical inspection of the complianceof fire safety norms by commercial establishments in T. Nagarand Mambalam. The inspection was ordered by Madras HighCourt based on the PIL filed by our Association. In its report, the Fire Dept. has stated that most of the commercial estab-lishments have not complied with the fire safety norms nor arethey equipped to control major fires from spreading. It has alsoreported that the narrow lanes and encroachments on pave-ments and service lanes will deter the movement of fire tendersand ambulances in reaching the spot of the fire accident. TheDC has assured the Association that appropriate action will betaken soon to remove encroachments.— B. Kannan, Secre-tary, T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30, RanganStreet, T. Nagar

Pedestrian SafetyKeep to the left is not the rule for all road users
By P. Sabhanayagam, IAS (Retd.)The Corporation and the Government are taking road
safety measures – providing railings at traffic junctions, improving pavements, increasing police traffic control mea-sures. Yet accidents take place. Why? One important reasonis the pedestrians keeping to the left cannot see vehiclescoming from behind until the vehicles overtake them.
A pedestrian seeing a pothole or a bump on the road orseeing a child going astray has to move a couple of feet to theright; consequently any vehicle coming from behind has tosuddenly swerve further to the right to avoid hitting thepedestrian. If unfortunately, the driver is unable to manage,he is likely to hit the pedestrian.
Also roads being congested, quite often the vehicle driverwho has to overtake the pedestrian finds a speeding vehiclecoming from the opposite direction and he too is in danger ofbeing hit. This sort of a situation is a common occurrence. Many such accidents have been reported.
Is there a solution? Why not the pedestrian keep to the rightof the road, while vehicles continue to keep to the left? Thenthe pedestrian can see vehicles coming in front and can avoidthem and the vehicle driver also can see well in time thepedestrian attempting to avoid potholes, etc and both havea fair chance of avoiding an accident.
This logical assessment can make a lot of difference andreduce accidents.
Therefore the salutary universal rule for road users to beadopted henceforth can be VEHICLES LEFT, PEDESTRI-ANS RIGHT.
