TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKTamil Cinema and Music - 9

N. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM“Venuganam” had in its cast, besides Vasanthakokilam,

noted artistes like K. Sarangapani, V. V. Satagopan (the wellknown Carnatic musician who enjoyed movie stardom for abrief while), Kulathumani, A. Sakunthala (later Mrs. P. U.Chinnappa), S. M. Subbaiah and M. V. Mani.

It was made at the Central Studios, Coimbatore, which hadplayed a significant role in the history of Indian Cinema. In thismovie, Vasanthakokilam sang songs in ragas Manirangu,Hindustan Naattai, Senjurutti, Behag, Kaapi and Jonpuri.(The last song, its lyrics and tune were copied from the famous‘Eppo Varuvaaro’, duly adapted to suit the film!) With Sachi, her patron and life-guide, losing his hold on the movie world andnot getting films to make, Vasanthakokilam realized that shewould not get heroine roles any more. Besides, her career as aperforming Carnatic musician had taken off, and Sachi con-centrated in promoting her as a competitor to M. S.Subbulakshmi. Whatever MSS did, NCV also did. When MSScut discs of Hindi songs, which was in fashion during the 1940’s,NCV too followed suit! While the music was tunefully melodi-ous, her accent and pronunciation of Hindi words were atro-cious! However her discs of Carnatic music sold well and spreadher fame.

She, however, did not give up movies altogether. By now shewas well into her thirties. Generally Brahmin and other middleclass women of that era did not bother to take care of their figureand form, and NCV was no exception! The familiar middle age-spread began to creep over her! Sachi realized that she couldonly play supporting roles thereafter.

One such role came to her in Haridas, the memorable movieof 1944 featuring M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, the firstsuperstar of South Indian cinema, singing star, icon and alegend in his lifetime. The movie had the oomph girl of her day,T. R. Rajakumari, in the lead role. NCV was cast as MKT’s wifein the movie. Produced by the Maduraibased well known RayalTalkie Distributors, the film was directed by the multi-lingualfilmmaker Sundar Rao Nadkarni and was shot at CentralStudios, Coimbatore. Others in the cast included N. S. Krishnan,T. A. Mathuram. ‘Pulimoottai’ Ramasami, T. E.Krishnamachari and M. M. Radhabai.

A folk myth tale of sinner-turning-saint, “Haridas” was amusical extravaganza and became a super hit. Indeed, to thisday, it holds the unbroken record for the longest run at a singletheater by a non-Hindi, regional language film in India. It ranfor 116 weeks at Broadway Cinema, Madras, and witnessedthree consecutive Deepawali festivals, 1944, 1945 and 1946!The reason was its music. Its lyrics and music were by thelegendary icon of Carnatic Music and cult figure, PapanasamSivan, and the orchestration and background music score wereby the noted film composer, G. Ramanathan assisted by S. M.Subbaiah Naidu.

Many songs of ¡°Haridas” became hits. NCV sang songs inBilahari (¡°Kadhiravan Udayam Kandu...” was popular),Suddha Dhanyasi (¡°Kanna Vaa Manivannaa Vaa...”, also apopular song), Hindi filmbased tune (¡°Enadhu ManamThulli...¡±). Mayamaalavagowla (¡°Enathuyir Naadhan...”), Shealso sang a duet with MKT Bhagavathar which fell rather flat!

In 1940, M. S. Subbulakshmi created a sensation when sheplayed the male role of the musical sage Narada in Y. V. Rao’s¡°Savithri”. The popular Hindi and Marathi film star of herdays, Shantha Apte, played the heroine and she spoke and sangin Tamil in her own voice with no play-back singer or dubbing- a fact which would stun many today when few stars speak orsing in their own voices!

After MSS set the ball rolling, Vasanthakokilam too donnedthe male garb of Narada in Jupiter Pictures’ “Valmiki” (1946).Not many are aware that M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar wasthe first choice to play the hero in this movie. But, regretfully,he was arrested in December 1944 for his alleged involvementin the sensational “Lakshmikantham Murder Case” whichshook not only South India but also the rest of the nation andother lands during late 1944- early 1945. He was in prison forthirty months and came out only in April, 1947.

Overflowing bins under flyoverhinder motorists

Sir, There are a couple of garbage bins keptunder the Y-shaped flyover near its junctionwith Bazullah Road, T. Nagar.

The garbage often overflows from the bins asit is not cleared regularly by Corporation work-ers. Often the bins are found close to the middleof the road causing hindrance to motorists.

I appeal to the Corporation officials to re-move the bins from the spot. R. Ramesh,Nagathamman Koil Street, WestMambalam

MTC staff not keen on issuing freebus passes

Sir, I am a senior citizen residing in AnandanStreet, T. Nagar.

On May 12, I collected the application formfor issue of free MTC bus pass for me and mywife from the counter at T. Nagar Bus Stand.

When I approached the MTC office the nextday to submit the filled in application formalong with the relevant documents, the staff atthe counter refused to accept it stating that hewas busy with the issue of regular bus passesand asked me to come a week later.

To my dismay, I found there were threecounters in operation and there was hardly anycrowd at any of these. My repeated requests tothe staff only fell on deaf ears and I had toreturn without getting the free bus passes.

I don’t understand why the staff are harass-ing senior citizens who want to avail of the freebus pass.

I appeal to MTC to take immediate steps toinstruct its staff not to harass senior citizenswho want to avail of free bus passes. R.Krishnan, Anandan Street, T. Nagar, 9840727935

Cab operators, residents oppose bicycletrack projectBy Our Staff Reporter

The city’s first bicycle trackproject in K. K. Nagar has runinto opposition from privatecar operators and residents. While the car operators fearthe widened pavement will eatinto parking space, residentsare against removal of rampsextending from their buildingsto the footpath. The 3.8-km.cycle track, covering P. T.Rajan Salai, Lakshman-swamy Salai and Rama-swamy Salai, was proposed tobenefit thousands of studentsgoing to schools and tuitioncenters in the vicinity. The Rs.3-crore project includes widen-ing of pavements, laying asmooth, cement concrete car-riageway and laying a cycletrack alongside the footpathas per Indian Roads Congressstandards. Experts feel that

the project could have been agood model to replicate in otherareas as cycling has becomedifficult in the city.

Work on the project thatmissed its March deadline wasslowed down because of oppo-sition from private car opera-tors and residents. “There areseveral car operators in andaround LakshmanswamySalai and Ramaswamy Salaiwho park their vehicles onpavements and roadsideswhich hinder our work, espe-cially at night. They fear itwould lead to removal of theirillegal ramps and they won’t beable to take their vehicles out,”said a senior Corporation offi-cial. “On several occasions, workers of the contractor con-cerned were threatened andasked to stop the work”, headded. Also, traffic police are

yet to make LakshmanswamySalai and Ramaswamy Salaione-way stretches as part ofthe project. “We have com-pleted one side ofLakshmanswamy Salai andRamaswamy Salai. We evensaw several children in theneighbourhood cycling alongthe completed portion of thetrack. But its use can berealised only after the entireloop is completed,” the officialsaid. A survey found that about1,000 cyclists use the stretchin an hour (during school hours)and the number is likely to goup after completion of the cycletrack. Tahaer Zoyab, co-founder of Triple O Studio thatdesigned the project, said: “Wehope the attitude of people innearby areas will change andthey will encourage their chil-dren to cycle.”
