Objects: Two flyers - one done messy and one done well(See attached flyers. Before class slightly crumble the messy one)

How are all of you doing this morning? Have you ever been on a vacation? You know, the secretary in our church office wanted to take a short vacationso I offered to help her by making the church flyers for an upcoming event. In fact, I made TWO of them! I brought them with me today so you can seethem. Here is the first one I did. (Show the class the messy one. Try to un-ruffle it before you show it.) See all of the pretty pictures? Notice the poemabout the All Church Clean-up? What do you think about the heading? What? I misspelled it? What? You think it is a little messy? Well, I did notthink it was very good either so I made a second one. (Show the class theflyer that is done well.) See, all of the pictures that were on the first one areon this one. Here is the poem for the All Church Clean-up. I checked all ofthe spelling and fixed the fonts in the heading. Just like you, I was not verysatisfied with the job I did the first time so I did it again. It is important thatwhenever I do something that I do my best. By doing my best I am beingDEPENDABLE. By being DEPENDABLE, I am honoring God.

VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 17 page 5

A long time ago ... there was a prophet named Elijah. Elijah was one of the best knownprophets of the Old Testament. He was a prophet in the Northern Kingdom(Israel) during the reign of a very evil king named Ahab. Ahab was marriedto a very evil woman named Jezebel. She worshiped Baal, a “nature god”who she said caused crops to grow if the people worshiped him. She did notwant any of the people in Israel to worship God so she did everything shecould to punish those who did.

Elijah was greatly troubled by this idol worship. God told him to go to KingAhab and tell him “there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few yearsexcept at my word.” (1 Kings 17:1) This was a dangerous thing to do sinceAhab and Jezebel were Baal worshippers and Baal was the god of fertility. This warning challenged their god who brought the rain. But Elijah was faith-ful an did what God told him to do.

Finally after over three years of draught, God ordered Elijah to return toAhab with an example of His power over Baal. When Elijah met with Ahab,he told him to gather the people and meet him on Mount Carmel. He alsotold him to have all of the prophets of Baal there. Elijah challenged theprophets of Baal to prove who the true God was. He had two bulls preparedfor sacrifice, one for the prophets of Baal and one for him. The prophets ofBaal called upon their god to send fire to light their altar. Nothing happened.Elijah took twelve stones to represent the twelve tribes of Israel and built analtar “in the name of the Lord.” (vs. 32) He then dug a deep trench aroundthe altar and instructed the people to soak the offering and wood with water. At the appointed time, Elijah prayed for God to show the people who was thetrue God of Israel. Immediately fire fell and burned up the sacrifice and woodas well as the stones and all of the water in the trench. The people acknowl-edged Elijah’s God as the true God and the prophets of Baal were put todeath. Then God sent rain to cover the country.

What we can learn from the story Elijah knew it would be dangerous to challenge Ahab and Jezebel, but Godcould depend on him to do what was necessary to show the people who wasthe true God. Elijah also depended on God to send the fire, then the rain.

WHAT IS DEPENDABILITY? To be relied on to do what should be done

and what you said you would do.To be DEPENDABLE means to be reliable, trustworthy or steady. It meansyou can be counted on. It is important to do all we say we will do and every-thing we are supposed to do.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN BE DEPENDED ON TO DO WHAT YOU

SAY YOU ARE GOING TO DO OR SUPPOSED TO DO?(Have kids give examples from their daily life.)

BEING DEPENDABLE IS A PROCESS.In order to be considered dependable, you need to start by doing what yourparents, teachers and other responsible adults ask you to do. Not only is itimportant to start the job when you asked, but it is important to finish eachjob started. Having a good attitude is also important as well as being a teamplayer. The second step of the process is to do what you are supposed todo such as taking care of yourself, your family and your community. The laststep of the process is to do something because it is the right thing to do andnot because you will get something for doing it.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN REMIND YOURSELF TO BE DEPEND-ABLE? Set a timer or alarm clock, make a post-a-note, keep a day timer, etc.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT DEPENDABILITY IN OUR STORY?HOW WAS ELIJAH DEPENDABLE? HOW WAS GOD DEPENDABLE?Elijah was dependable to do everything God told him to do. God wasdependable by fulfilling His word.

TEACHER’S DEVOTION:Dear Lord, Just thinking of the word FAIRNESS makes me think ofplaying games with my sisters as a child. “That’s not fair!” or “Youcheated!” echoed through the house. It was so important to us foreveryone to play fair! Now I listen to the children in my class and Ihear these same words. Being fair is still important to children today.I need to carefully divide my classes in teams and carefully select thequestions I ask so I do not show favoritism to one side or the other.I need to treat each child in such a way they feel they are equallyimportant as the other children in my class. I need to love them asyou love them.

VALUE REVIEW

• What animal represents the value of COURAGE?• Define COURAGE.

OBJECT LESSON

Object: a ball, a large trash can and a small trash can (or pail)Good morning! Isn’t it a beautiful day? When I woke up this morning, I wasthinking about all the things I like to do on a day like today. One of the thingsI like to do is play basketball with my kids. Do any of you like to play bas-ketball? Let’s do something a little different today. Let’s start out with a gameof basketball! Let’s see. Let’s have that trash can (Point to the large trashcan) as one basket. Let’s make this trash can (lift up the small one) as theother basket. Now let’s choose teams. Everyone stand up. Now line up fromshortest to tallest. Now let’s see how many players we have. (Count thenumber of players.) We have ___ players all together. Divide that numberby two and the first ___ players are on one team and the last ____ playersare on the other team. Now I need one player from each team to “jump forthe ball” to start the game. (Choose the shortest player and the tallest play -er to “jump”. By this time the class should be yelling that it is not fair!) What? It’s not fair? Of course it is. Each team has the same number of players. Each team has a basket and each team has a player to jump for the ball. What? One team is shorter than the other? The baskets are not the samesize? Oh, I see what you mean. You are unhappy because this game is notfair. I have shown favoritism towards one team.

Well, the value we will be studying today is FAIRNESS. Let’s see what theBible has to say about being fair.

VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 18 page 3

A long time ago ... James, the oldest half-brother of Jesus, was preaching to the Jewish believ-ers. He wrote this letter to stress that if we have real faith, we will show it byour Christian actions. In this letter he gave practical advise concerningissues that faced Christians then as well as today. In Chapter 2, James gavean illustration of a rich man and a poor man who are attending a religiousmeeting to show the importance of not showing favoritism.

“Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fineclothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show spe-cial attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seatfor you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor bymy feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judgeswith evil thoughts?” (James 2:2-4) James used this illustration to explain thatGod does not see these men any differently. God has said all those who lovehim will inherit the kingdom of heaven. (The Beatitudes, Matthew 5:3-10)James went on to remind them to “Love your neighbor as yourself” and ifthey showed favoritism, they have sinned.

What we can learn from the story Jesus taught us by showing love to all mankind. He did not show favoritismto anyone. Instead he offered salvation to all who believed. We, too, are notto show favoritism. We are to strive to be fair in all we do. We are to followthe guidelines, or rules, set by God.

WHAT IS FAIRNESS? To follow the rules and treat everyone without favoritism.

To be FAIR is to be just and honest. It also means to play according to therules. God wants us to treat everyone without favoritism. That is to treateveryone with the same respect. It also means to not set ourselves higherthan anyone else. To God we are all equal. Some expressions used tomean do things in a fair manner are:

FAIR play, FAIR shake and Square deal

WHAT DID JAMES SAY ABOUT FAIRNESS IN OUR STORY?He cautioned the Christian churches to treat the poor man the same as theytreat the rich man.

WHAT ARE SOME TIMES WHEN KIDS DO NOT ACT FAIRLY?• when playing a game• when taking a test• when there is someone new of a different race or religion• when someone is handicapped

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN SHOW FAIRNESS?• be friendly with a new kid at school • invite everyone to play ... those who play well and those who do not• have a positive attitude towards everyone ... even when you do

not like them because they dress, talk or look differently• obey all the rules in a game

WHAT CAN YOU DO WHEN SOMEONE DOES NOT TREAT YOU FAIRLY?• pray when something happens that does not seem fair• ask God to help you forgive someone who has hurt you• when someone is not fair, repay their unkindness with kindness

A story about accepting others

Week 19

Tea cher’s Notes

TEACHER’S DEVOTION:Dear Lord, In our world today there seems to be a lot of prejudice and ill-will towards those who are different from us. This is very sad because it it not the way you want it to be. We need to be morewilling to accept others who are a different race, nationality orreligion. We need to be willing to accept others who have physicalor mental handicaps. But by accepting others differences, we do notneed to accept their sin. Help me to be more aware of those who aredifferent and help me to treat them with the respect they deserve. Help me to be bold enough to love them and to speak to them in loveconcerning that which separates them from you.

OBJECT LESSON

Object: a jar of M&M’sGood morning, boys and girls! It is so good to see all of you this morning!Today I brought something I want to share with all of you ... a jar of M&M’s!Look closely at this jar. Can you name all of the different colors of M&M’s?(Green, red, yellow, brown, tan, orange and blue) Why did the people whomade this candy make them all these colors? Do the different colors tastedifferent? (No) Well, if they do not taste any different, why go to the troubleof making them look different on the outside? I think they do that so they willlook exciting and people will want to eat them.

Just like this jar of candy is all different colors, God made people all differ-ent colors. He also made them with different accents, different languagesand different customs. I believe He did this so the world would be a moreexciting place to live. And just like this jar of candy is all the same on theinside, God made man the same on the inside. He gave us a heart to loveone another. He also gave us a mind so we could choose how to acttowards each other.

Our story today is about the disciple Peter who learned the importance ofsharing the Gospel with all mankind, not just the Jews.

VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 19 page 3

A long time ago ... there was a Gentile centurion named Cornelius who lived in Caesarea. Hegave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. One day hehad a vision in which an angel told him to bring the disciple Peter to hishouse. Cornelius immediately called two of his servants and one of hisattendants to go to Joppa to get Peter. As these three men traveled toJoppa, Peter had a vision in which he saw heaven open and something likea large sheet let down to earth. It contained all kinds of animals, birds andreptiles. Then a voice told him to get up, kill and eat them. Peter replied thathe could not because he had never eaten anything impure or unclean. Thevoice spoke to him again. “Do not call anything impure that God has madeclean.” (Acts 10:15) This happened two more times and then the sheet wastaken back up to heaven. Then the voice told him three men were lookingfor him and for him to go with them.

When Peter arrived at Cornelius’ house, there was a large gathering of peo-ple. He said to them, “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jewto associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I shouldnot call any man impure or unclean.” (vs. 28) Peter then asked why they hadsent for him. Cornelius told him about his vision and that they were gatheredthere to hear what the Lord commanded Peter to tell them. Peter then saidthat God did not show favoritism but accepts all men from every nation whobelieve Jesus is the Son of God. He told them the good news of salvationwas not just for the Jews but was also for the Gentiles.

What we can learn from the story God wanted Peter to realize that Jesus had paid the penalty for sins of allmankind, not just the Jews. God wants us to realize this as well. He wantsus to accept all who love Jesus, no matter how different they seem to us.

“For God so loved the world he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not parish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

WHAT IS ACCEPTANCE? To willingly acknowledge others as worthy to God.

To ACCEPT someone is to willingly receive them or to approve of them. Weare to recognize that all men are of the same worth to God. God does notlove one nationality more than another. He loves all of His children thesame.

HOW DID PETER SHOW ACCEPTANCE IN OUR STORY?God revealed to Peter through a vision that the Good News of Jesus Christwas not just for the Jews, but also for the Gentiles.

THINK ABOUT WAYS YOU ARE ALIKE AND DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS

IN YOUR CLASS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THEM?Alike: age, language, food we eat, things we learn at schoolDifferent: things we do for fun, sports we play, number of siblings

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS KIDS ARE NOT ACCEPTED?Kids that are new, speak a different language, physically handicapped, mentally handicapped, kids who learn slowly, kids who are especially intel-ligent, kids who wear glasses, kids that are home schooled, kids who areover active, kids who are shy, and kids who do not play a sport well.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN ACCEPT THESE KIDS?Invite kids who are not accepted by others to eat lunch with you or to comeover to your house. When you see them off by themselves, invite them tojoin in whatever you are doing. Talk to your friends about including them intheir activities. Remind them that all people are equal in God’s eyes. *This is not to say you are to invite those who hurt themselves or others to participate inyour activities or your friends’ activities. When you know someone who is hurtful like this, notify a responsible adult to report what you know. God does not want you to put yourselfin danger. Also remember to beware of strangers as your parents have instructed you.

A story about obedience

Week 20

Tea cher’s Notes

TEACHER’S DEVOTION:Dear Lord, I love you. It is because I love you I want to learn yourvalues. One of the hardest values to do is OBEDIENCE. It is sohard to do someone else’s will and not our own. It is hard to obeysomeone when we do not always understand why. Yet that is exactlywhat you call us to do sometimes. Immediately and without question we are to do as you ask us to do. Then I think of the times I have called for complete obedience from my own children. Most of the timeit was to prevent them from hurting themselves or others. It must belike that for you, dear Lord. OBEDIENCE is often equal to protection.

OBJECT LESSON

Object: book of matches all burnt with one missing and bandaidsGood morning! I hope all of you had a great week! I am afraid I did not havesuch a great day yesterday. (Hold up your hand with the bandaids on threefingers.) I was trying to light a fire in the fireplace and I was in a hurry.Instead of being careful and think of what I was doing, I just grabbed thisbook of matches, opened it and struck a match. Next thing I knew I had litthe whole book of matches and I had burnt my fingers! Ouch! Well, I quick-ly dropped the matches and stomped them out. Then I looked at the match-es closely. Do you see what it says on the cover? (Show it to the children.)It says, “Close cover before striking.” If I had read the cover and closed itbefore striking the match I never would have burned my fingers.

God has given us a book with warnings in it, too. It is the Bible. God has toldus stories not only of what His people did right, but also what they did wrong. The stories are there for us to learn from. In every case God has told Hispeople to be obedient and to follow His directions. One such story is a veryfamiliar one which we need to look at again as we study this importantvalue. Can any of you guess what that story is? It is of a man who tried torun away from God when he was asked to do something he did not want todo. (Jonah)

VALUE KEEPERS OF THE BIBLE: Week 20 page 3

A long time ago ... there was a prophet of God named Jonah. He was a man with a real ser-vant’s heart. He lived in the Northern Kingdom, Israel. God wanted Jonahto go to Nineveh, the capital of Assyrian, and warn them that they would bedestroyed in forty days because of their wickedness. But Jonah did notwant to go because he knew how evil the people were. He was afraid if theyrepented, God would forgive them and they would later destroy Israel. SoJonah tried to run away from the Lord by boarding a ship going to Tarshish,in the opposite direction from Nineveh. God sent a violent storm that threat-ened to break the ship. Even the sailors were afraid! They woke up Jonahwho was asleep to ask him who was responsible for the trouble they werein and what to do about it. Jonah told them he was running away from Godwho made the sea and the land. He told them to throw him into the sea andwhen they did, the sea became calm. God then sent a great fish to swallowJonah. He remained inside the fish praying for three days and three nights.God heard Jonah’s prayers and commanded the fish to vomit him up on dryland. Now God came to Jonah a second time. This time Jonah was obedi-ent and he went straight to Nineveh. The king of Nineveh and the peopledid repent and God did spare them.

What we can learn from the story Jonah did not want to do what God told him to do. He did not understandGod’s plan for the people in Nineveh. When he disobeyed God, Jonah waspunished. First the ship he was on was overcome by a great storm, thenJonah was swallowed by a great fish. Jonah said he was sorry for not obey-ing God and after praying for three days and nights, God released him fromthe fish. God gave Jonah another chance to obey Him.

Just as God wanted Jonah to obey Him, He wants us to obey Him. Jonahdid not understand God’s plan for the people in Nineveh. Sometimes we donot understand God’s plan for us. But in all things God wants us to obey.Sometimes what He wants us to do is hard. Sometimes it does not makeany sense, but God still wants us to obey.

OBEDIENCETo willingly do what you are asked to do.

WHAT IS OBEDIENCE? To willingly do what you are asked to do.

The key to being OBEDIENT is to do it willingly. It also means to be loyal orto follow the rules or laws. It also means to yield.

WHO ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE OBEDIENT TO?We are first to be OBEDIENT to God. God gave us the 10 Commandmentsso we would know what laws we are to obey. “Honor your father and yourmother” is one of these commandments. We are to obey our parentsbecause God wants us to. We are also to obey our teachers in school, police officers and other adults in authority.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO OBEY PARENTS, TEACHERS & THE LAW?Don’t talk back, do chores or assignments without being told to, participatein discussions, answer all questions honestly, don’t talk out of turn, followdirections, respect police officers, and obey the rules in public places.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO BE OBEDIENT TO YOUR PARENTS?Parents are responsible to raise children. They are responsible to teachthem what is right and what is wrong. They are responsible to protect themfrom harm. They are also responsible to teach them how to be OBEDIENTto their heavenly Father as well as to obey the laws of society. The familyunit is like a mini-society. The rules and relationships you learn within yourfamily will teach you how to act in society when you are grown up. It is alsoimportant to remember that by being OBEDIENT you earn more privileges.

IN WHAT OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES IS IT IMPORTANT TO OBEY? WHY?It is important to obey the rules of a game. Rules in a game help to insurefair play. In some games the rules are there to protect us and others frominjury. It is also important to teach younger children to obey us when we arewatching them. By teaching them to obey us, we are trying to protect themfrom harm. (IE. Do not cross a street without looking both ways.)
