• Theme:

Timbang iwasto,

sa tamang nutrisyon at ehersisyo!

Page 56: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

RECOMMENDED FOCUS

• Childhood Obesity

• Increases risk for psychological effects, gastrointestinal complications, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes

• Increases risk of adult obesity which is strongly associated with comorbidities that contribute to CVD and diabetes

Page 57: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

CHILDHOOD OBESITY

• Longitudinal studies show the increased risk for morbidity and mortality in adulthood are independent of adult BMI, i.e. negative health consequences may present even if normal weight is attained in adulthood

• Childhood obesity leaves a permanent imprint.

Page 58: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

CHILDHOOD OBESITY

• Preventing childhood obesity leads to reduction in comorbidities in children and reduce long-term burden of NCDs

• Interventions early in life are likely to have sustained effects on health because it influences responses to later challenges, e.g. living in an obesogenic environment

Interventions aimed at preventing childhood obesity would lead to both a reduction in comorbidities in children and to a reduction of the long-term burden of NCDs. Life-course studies suggest that interventions in early life, when biology is most ‘plastic’ and amenable to change, are likely to have the greatest positive sustained effects on health, particularly because they may influence responses to later challenges, such as living in an obesogenic environment (5

Page 59: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

FACTORS IN CHILDHOOD OBESITY

• Maternal over and undernutrition affects child response to nutritional experiences

• Biological set-points for appetite, eating, exercise behaviors occur during infancy

Page 60: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

FACTORS IN CHILDHOOD OBESITY

• Obesogenic environment

• Exposure to ultra-processed, energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods

• Reduced physical activity

• Increased time for sedentary activities

Page 61: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

FACTORS IN CHILDHOOD OBESITY

• Parental, family, caregiver knowledge

• Socio-economic factors

• Cultural norms (eating, exercise, body image)

Page 62: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

RECOMMENDED STRATEGIES

• Reduce intake of unhealthy foods and promote intake of healthy foods and non-alcoholic beverages by children and adolescents

• Reduce risk of obesity using life-course approach

• (IYCF, maternal nutrition, community and school-based interventions)

• Treat obese children (family-focused behavior lifestyle)

Page 63: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

NM PLAN

• Activities should promote actions to prevent and address childhood obesity

• Think of activities that will have sustained impact after Nutrition Month

• Actions should be guided by evidence-based interventions

Page 64: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

NM PLAN

• National launch to promote a campaign to address childhood obesity (still to be conceptualized)

• Coordinate with DepED

Page 65: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE

POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES

• Promote at least 60 minutes of daily exercise (Fat run)

• Reduce exposure of children to marketing of unhealthy foods and non-alcoholic beverages

• Ensure healthy food environments (availability of healthy foods)

• Nutrition promotion (parents/caregivers)

Page 66: Mancon 1, S. 2015 18 March 2015, Baguio City NIED UPDATE
