Dear Parents and Carers
This week we have been thinking of others. On Tuesday the Reception classes
presented their delightful Mother’s Day assembly. During the week all the classes
have been preparing pieces of art work to sell in a shop during the last week of term.
On Friday we came to school in pyjamas, to have fun and raise money for Red Nose
Day. **We’ve raised £292 for Red Nose Day!**
On Wednesday we heard about the dreadful attack in London. The following day we
held a minute’s silence in all the classes, to have a moment to think about and show
respect for all those who were injured or killed. I am sure that as families you will
have talked about the incident in the way that you think most appropriate for your
family. In school we are a supportive and caring community and children and adults
have talked about the incident. We encourage children to understand and to uphold
British Values of Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs. Included in this week’s newsletter
is a letter from Councillors Brigid Jones and Tristan Chatfield and statements from
Birmingham Central Mosque and Jamia Gamkool Sharif Mosque. Mrs Whitehead
The Shop for Schools Project
We have found out which shop unit is going to be ours for the day. We
are super excited! A picture of the shop unit is above.
Each child will be making 2 items of artwork. One will be reserved (kept in
class) for family to buy and the second will be sold in the shop.
Please come and support us on Thursday the 6th of April to see Year 5
in action selling the items made by all the classes in school. Bring family
and friends and spread the message! It will be lovely for children to sell all
their items so that they feel like their hard work and effort is recognised.
All money raised from the event will be going into hiring an artist to
produce a sculpture/piece of artwork with the children.
Year 5 will be producing a newsletter with more information soon. Watch
this space!!

School Expansion Update
At long last…...building work starts next week! On
Monday morning a section of playground will be
securely fenced off. Behind the fence, the builders
will begin laying the foundations for the temporary
classrooms to move to. After that the builders will
begin work on the permanent buildings.
Cross Country Report The cross-country team have been busy over the last two weeks, taking part in the final races of the season. Bishop Vesey was the venue for the third race of the season, and in great conditions the children ran extremely well over a long and challenging course. Amaya Tisdale secured an excellent 4th place in the girls’ race, and was ably supported by Anna Karafillides, and Emily Culley, Sofia Johnson, and Evie Tonks. In the boys’ race Samuel Wall finished in a personal best 9th place, and led home the rest of the team which consisted of Ethan Hammond, Spencer Fallows, Harry Moors, Tom Walker, Ben Richards and Zac Johnson. Many of the children were competing in their first races, and did so with great determination.
On Wednesday night, conditions were rather different in Sutton Park for the final race of the year. Torrential rain and freezing cold conditions were a true test of competitors, parents and teaching staff! All of the children coped with the conditions wonderfully, and proved that they can deal with all weathers. Amaya came 4th again in her race, and several children achieved personal best finishing positions.
I would like to say well done to the children for all of their effort and commitment, both at the races and at Cross-Country club. In particular, I would like to congratulate those who were running in their final races for the school, and have given their best efforts for the team for the past three years.
Finally, thank you to all of the parents that have supported the children throughout the season.

School Clothing Grants
Applications can be made if parents

tax credit, working tax credit, job seekers’
allowance, guarantee element of state
pension credit and employment and
support allowance. Forms available from the school
office, completed forms must be returned by 28th
April
to the school office.
Considerate Parking Unfortunately, we still have some inconsiderate and dangerous parking. This week a resident phoned school to let us know that two parents had parked across their driveway. One parent did apologise but the other one was rude to the resident. Please do not park on driveways or yellow lines.

Message from Cllr Brigid Jones and Cllr Tristan Chatfield
As you will all know, yesterday another terrible attack happened, this time on our own soil in London. Our thoughts are with the families of those killed, and those injured and still fighting for their lives following it. Democracy is a core British value. Every day, people from all over the world come to visit our Parliament and celebrate that value and the difference it makes to people's lives; including one of our own schools, who were there yesterday. We are all so grateful that they came home safely. Democracy doesn't come easily; over the years, people all over the world have fought and died for their right to have a vote. It's the most precious thing that we have. It's not the first time we've been attacked like this in Britain, and it won't be the last. On November the 5th we celebrate the failing of a plot to attack parliament hundreds of years ago. During World War 2, a bomb was dropped on the House of Commons by the Nazis. Next year, we celebrate the centenary of women winning the vote in Britain from the men who denied it to them. The MP Jo Cox was murdered last year for standing up for what she believed in, as were many politicians in the 1980s and 90s. All of these attacks were made by different people from different backgrounds. And all those people failed to stop democracy, because they were a tiny minority who didn't represent their groups or the rest of us. This is why it is so important that we honour the memory of those that fought and died by holding on to that value of democracy. Your school will have a school council; use your voice. Your parents will have a vote; tell them how important it is to use it. One day, you will have a vote too, and when you go to put a cross on the ballot paper for the first time it will be one of the most important and defiant things you will ever have done in your life. By that simple action, you'll be saying to all those who fought to stop you from doing it that they failed, and we won. And you'll be making sure your voice is heard, in Birmingham Council House, and in the building that was attacked yesterday, our Parliament. You are always welcome in our Council House, Birmingham's symbol of democracy, and we are always keen to come out and meet you. Parliament will honour the memory of those who died by carrying on, and we must, too.

Statement from Birmingham Central Mosque The Birmingham Central Mosque strongly condemns the brutal Westminster terror attacks in LONDON on Wednesday 22.03.17. Whoever the attacker is, and whatever the cause may be, nothing justifies taking lives of innocent people which is completely against the good of humanity. Those responsible must be brought to justice to protect good, in our constant fight to eradicate evil within humanity. We request all communities for the unity and calm. Life is very sacred and this brutal attack must be condemned by all regardless of any background. The Islamic faith does not allow anyone to take the life of others. Such people are condemned in the holy Quran and in the sayings of the Holy Prophet. No religion justifies the indiscriminate killing of individuals in such a barbaric and heartless way, and such acts only serve to differentiate between the misguided and the just. We call upon those that may have even a shred of sympathy for the like-minded terrorists to shake their conscience and realize that such acts are the work of evil and not the work of God-fearing people. In this tragic difficult time, our sincere thoughts and condolences are with the bereaved families and the general public of the United Kingdom. We also stand firm in solidarity with victims’ families and the rest of the world, who have been affected and are in mourning. Birmingham Central Mosque has always raised our voice against any kind of terrorism. We have recently published a 12-page booklet which was reinforced and endorsed by 29 other major mosques and Islamic organisations in Birmingham to stand firm against these evil ideologies who have got not link with ISLAM or MUSLIMS and we strongly reject their ideologies. The booklet titles “TERRORISM IS NOT ISLAM’ which was also supported by West Midlands Police and circulated over 55 thousand copies at a number of locations including mosques, schools, shops and other public places etc. The booklet hard copies are available at the mosque but can also be downloaded from the mosque website and other media pages. The Confederation of Sunni Mosque Midlands We convey our condolences to the family of PC Keith Palmer and to the families of the victims who were murdered on the attack on the House of Parliament. The act is an attack on all of us, an attack on our British Values, in particular on democracy.
