What is the Notetaking Service? Throughthepeernotetakingservice,studentswithdisabilitiesreceivecopiesoflecturenotesbecausetheyareunabletotaketheirownlegiblecopyoflecturenotes.EligibilityforthenotetakingserviceisdeterminedbyDisabilityServices.Thismaybeforreasonssuchas:

Visionimpairment Hearingimpairment Specificlearningdisability Writingimpairment Physicaldisability

UnderthisschemestudentsfromthesamelecturegrouparerecruitedasNotetakerstodeliverclear,accuratelecturenotesinatimelyfashion.InordertoprotecttheconfidentialityofboththeNoteRecipientsandtheNotetakers,DisabilityServiceshasinplaceananonymousdistributionfornotes.Theserviceisonlyprovidedwhenlecturenotesarenotavailableontheweborfromthelecturer.Thenotetakingserviceisnotareplacementforattendinglectures.Recipientsoftheservicemuststillattendalllectures,tutorialsandpracticals.NotetakersarepaidanhourlyratebyDisabilityServices.

Working as a Peer Notetaker Whenyouareoffered,andaccept,apositionasaNotetakeryouwillreceivethefollowinginadditiontothisInstructionManual:

Peer Notetaker Responsibilities AsaNotetakeryouareanemployeeofDisabilityServices,andareexpectedtoundertakethefollowingcommitments:

AdviseDisabilityServicesifthelecturenotesaremadeavailableontheweb.

AlertDisabilityServicesimmediatelytoanychangeincontactdetailsoravailabilityfornotetaking.

Completeanaccuratepayclaimattheendofsemester.

RespecttheprivacyofDisabilityServicesclients,anddonotdiscloseany

information,thatyoumaycomeintocontactwith,outsideofthisservice(e.g.ifyouhappentoknowwhotheclientsare.)

Provideyouwithtrainingontheuseofequipment.

Provideequipmentforyoutouseinordertocarryoutthedeliveryofyournotes.

Provideassistancewithequipment,administrativematters(likepayclaims)orgeneralqueriesaboutNotetaking.

Processyourpayclaiminanaccurateandtimelymanner.

Adviseyouiftherecipientnolongerrequirestheservicethatyouareproviding.

Guidelines for Notetaking Besuretodothefollowingforallnotes:

Recordthedate,lecturenumberandsubjectcodeatthebeginning.

Thisissotherecipientwillknowwhatyournotesareandcaneasilykeeptheminorder.ItalsomeansthatDisabilityServicescanverifytheworkyouhavecompleted.

Typeyournotes.Thiswillensurethatyournotesareeasytoreadandcomeoutclearlyandinanappropriatesizeifprinted.

Checkyourspelling.Thisisimportant,especiallyforphrasesandjargonthatarenotpartofordinarylanguageusage.Checkwiththelecturerifyoudonotknowhowtospellaword;chancesarethatothersinthelectureareunsureaswell.Ifyouuseabbreviations,ensurethatyouhaveprovidedthedetailsofwhatthesestandforsothattherecipientcanunderstandthenotes.

Useheadingsorkeyphrasestostructureyournotes.Besuretouseheadingsandkeywordsthatareusedinthelecturetostructureyournotes.Thiswillnotonlymakeiteasierforyouwhenitcomestorevisiontime,butitwillalsomeantherecipientwillbebetterabletounderstandtheminrelationtothelecturecontent.

Highlightkeyphrases.Makeimportantpointsorwordsstandout.Thiswaytherecipientwillknowthattheyareimportantandshouldbestudiedmorethoroughlyincoursereadersorresearch.

Ensureyournotesarewellspaced.Takinggoodnotesdoesn’tmeanfillingupeveryavailablespaceonthepage.Yournoteswillbeeasiertoreadifyouusespacesbetweenpoints.
