ENRICHMENT PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS FOR TERM II 2014-2015 Academic Support – Instructors: Inclusion Department Assigned students only based on IEP Team determination. Curriculum support will be provided in small group instruction for students as determined by grade level Inclusion Specialists and the Special Ed. Coordinator. Advanced Jazz Band- Adria Smith $5.00 per student This is a fun opportunity to play jazz and funk. If you are proficient on your instrument and willing to improvise then, join! The Music Extravaganza will be on January 21st. 5th-8th grades. APRENDIENDO CON DIVERSION (Fun with Learning- Spanish)- Maria Latusky Spanish enrichment should held no more than 10 students and it will be for kids who have a very basic knowledge or none. I am thinking on kids who are in reading support and math support now. This class will offer engaging methods such as TPR (Total Physical Response), manipulatives, learning by singing etc… Barry’s Bingo- Mr. Barry Bingo with Mr. Barry is not to be missed! Come play trivia bingo and laugh your way to 3:15 with Mr. Barry. 4th-5th grades. Basic Cursive- Rosie Segil Why is learning cursive important? Learning cursive writing is one of the most important skills that student must acquire. It contributes to cognitive development when multiple areas of the brain are being engaged as opposed to typing or just visual practice. Goal -- to strengthen cursive writing skills of fourth grade students using fun exercises in similar visual formation and movement patterns. Just bring pencils and I will provide lined papers for everyone. 4th grade Brain Busters- Carol Solomon Build brain power! Learn problem solving strategies! Play board games! Practice spelling! Learn the rules and strategies while playing Rummykub, Cribbage, Backgammon, Risk, Mastermind, Connect-4, and Bananagrams. You can also bring your favorite strategy game from home. Only for the serious-minded game lovers. 4th & 5th graders British Rock Fest- Tony Palladino Beginning in the early 1960s, British rock musicians established a strong influence on music throughout the entire world. The British invasion began in America with the arrival of the Beatles in 1964, and they were quickly followed by the Rolling Stones, Who, Kinks, and Led Zeppelin. This Enrichment will take you back in time to explore and enjoy the rich music of this ground-breaking era. Card Sharks- Tony Palladino Sharpen your language, math and overall card skills with this one. Get out of the water!! There’s a card shark in there! Challenge Me!- Molly Wright Based upon the exciting curriculum from Boston’s Museum of Science, students will be fascinated and engaged in logic puzzles and “hands-on” problem-solving activities. 6th-8th grades

Chemistry One-Oh-Wonder- Davis Gold Come discover the world of chemistry at work in your daily life! Students will perform safe labs in which they will explore a new concept each week. Topics will range from density to freezing point depression and more. Each class will include lively discussion centered around each week’s exciting lab. 6-8 graders CLAP, SNAP, STOMP!- Dylan Leveroni, George Piepgras, John Lucas Clap, Snap, Stomp is an enrichment that not only shows students how to make music without instruments or singing, but to create a music masterpiece with only their hands and feet. Students will also be creating a short STOMP presentation to perform during Exhibition 2, and will be working with other students to combine their ideas, and work as one to create their stomp symphonies. Clarinet, Sax & Flute Group Lessons- Barry Fleischer $45.00 Student's will have the opportunity to: concentrate on their instruments, hone their skills, ask questions about their instruments, work on their band music and woodwind specific ensemble music. An emphasis on listening and being part of a group will be taught, which will enhance self confidence and abilities to better read music and perform as part of the school band. Students will be given band music and other woodwind specific pieces to practice and perform as a group. Individual attention will be provided to each student as needed. Computer Learning One- Alex Perkins, Jasper Westhoven, Matt Serdukoff with Emily Westhoven and Henrietta Perkins If you ever wanted to learn more about computer software and programming, then this enrichment is for you. In this enrichment, we will also teach you more about computer hardware. We hope that you will have some fun with computers. Crazy For Crafts- Ellen Lodgen $10.00 supply fee per student Crazy for Crafts calls on your creativity to make a wide variety of special projects. We will create home made books, paint wooden items, do collage in many media, sculpt with different materials, do paper cutting and even use the computer to create special self-portraits. Creative Sewing and Needlework- Beth Duffy Students will work on a variety of projects!!! They will start by making their own pincushion then move on to making their own custom stuffed toy, for which they will also make clothes! This class will use a variety of fabrics, new and recycled, and notions to create one of a kind items you can show off to friends and family or use as holiday gifts. We'll be using a combination of hand stitching, fabric glue and machine sewing to make their creations. Cross Stitching- Carol McEnaney Have fun learning the basics of counted cross stitch with a pro! Design and create unique gifts and projects. 4th-6th grades Directing- James Curcione $35.00 per student A studio style enrichment which will allow the students to explore and hone their own aesthetic and directing style. Students will engage in small hands-on projects throughout the enrichment which will focus on stage composition, discovering the unifying idea, blocking and rehearsal techniques and working with written material.

3 MB Fencing Club- Jack Mullarkey $130.00 per student (This class will be held from 2:30-3:30) Learn the basics of this exciting Olympic sport. You will learn footwork, handwork, speed and agility from one of the top U.S. Coaches. It's fun. All equipment is provided. Very limited class size. For Erbetta Or Worse- Bob Erbetta Students will learn how to swing a hammer, use a wrench and slap a paint brush and exterior projects all while keeping MCCPS in ship shape! Learn important life skills from the legend, himself, Bob Erbetta. 7th & 8th graders Government Rules!- Christine Durkin This enrichment will concentrate on the U.S. Constitution and the U.S. Legal System. We will also use an interactive website called iCivics.org (created by Sandra Day O'Connor). It will be as participatory as possible -- for example, students could argue a Supreme Court case and they could write a bill and get it enacted into law. Topics will include: - the three branches of government; roles of each and the separation of powers; - the first amendment -- freedom of speech; - the first amendment -- freedom of religion; - the first amendment -- free press; - the fourth amendment -- searches and seizures; - the sixth amendment -- right to an attorney; - preamble to the Constitution -- the old "school house rock"; - how the court system works; - how a bill becomes a law; - a day in the life of the President. 8th grade required Having Fun With The Guitar- Mike Mele $45.00 per student Great class for beginner's and intermediate students, no prior musical experience required. Learn basic techniques of how to play the guitar including chords, strumming, learning popular songs, and even some blues and improvising. The class will focus on learning to play songs together as a group. Each student must have their own (or borrow a) guitar. Improvisational Comedy- Lena Robinson Students will learn the art of thinking on their feet through improvisational games. The instructor will facilitate collaborative and humorous on-the-spot activities. Students will improve their public speaking and teamwork skills in a friendly, funny, and supportive environment. KhaNation!- Glenn Blakney If you love all things Khan Academy, this is the Enrichment for you! If you want to build muscle in the basics, or get ripped with some advanced math, you will want to be in the Computer Lab on Mondays! Live Poets’ Society- Felice K. Koslen Live Poets’ Society rises again! Explore your voice and bring it out into the world with pride. Join us and experience the power of the spoken and written word. We will write and read our words in class or outside in a “special spot” (weather permitting). Bring a favorite journal and a pen. Young poets, like new grass, green and prolific, rise

from silence, sprout tender voices, wave their words to the open sky. Magic The Gathering- Ethan Snook, Antonio Rinaldi, Owen Scola, Stephanie Scola, Keri Snook Magic the Gathering is a very fun enrichment that involves many cool and mystical creatures. You can play MTG also know as Magic the gathering with all your friends. All you need to play MTG is a deck of Magic The Gathering cards (which the enrichment) will provide. MTG is a very easy game to play and learn. I hope you will sign up for the MTG enrichment. MCCPS Maker Space- Glenn Blakney, Bill Sullivan $15.00 supply fee per student If you're interested in Building, Engineering Design, Electronics and Programming, using everything from cardboard to microcontrollers, then join the MCCPS Maker Space! You should be creative, self-starting, about to work independently on long-term projects, and eager to learn new skills in a team environment. Nuts About Needlepoint- Ellen Lodgen $8.00 supply fee Learn the art of needlepoint. Needlepoint is used to create beautiful designs and pictures for hanging, pillows and many crafts. You will learn several stitches by making a sampler. We may also design and create a group project to decorate our school. You will be supplied with the plastic canvas, needles and yarn. Come by 8L to see some samples before you sign up. Percussion Ensemble- David Andrew Moore $45.00 per student Learn the fundamentals of rhythm, musicianship, ensemble skills, and percussion technique in this unique class. Students will learn and perform as a group traditional and contemporary rhythms from around the globe, while also learning important life skills in listening, teamwork, cooperation, responsibility and leadership. Open to all experience and grade levels." Scratch- Lindsey Polizzatti Have fun creating your own animations, games and more using MIT's programming language "SCRATCH" created specifically for kids! Students will learn and apply the basics to create their own programs and help each other grow and learn more complex coding throughout the term. You can learn how to produce compelling images from your cell phone or ipad. Learning about making the most of lighting, settings and your subjects are just a few of the many elements that you will focus on. You must bring your own device to this enrichment. 4th-6th graders Stagecraft- James Curcione $40 per student material fee This enrichment will focus on learning technical theatre. Knowing another language is a very important life skill that allows you to communicate with many different groups of people. In Talking with our Hands, we will learn the basic signs in American Sign Language. We will also talk more about Deaf culture and the challenges Deaf

people face everyday. Join Mme. Liebowitz on Fridays to learn all about Deaf language and culture. 6th-8th grades (Beginners)

Tekkit With Nick-Nick Jasaitis and Michael Condon

In this enrichment, we will use the Minecraft computer game to build a factory using the Tekkit modpack. You must already own an account to join this enrichment.

Terri’s Baking- Terri Tauro & Alexandra Jaffe Baking basics, learning about measurements, ingredients and safety in the kitchen are all integral parts of becoming a great baker! Baking delicious treats is the biggest perk of all! The Money Game - Keeping Financially Fit- Charlene Bauer (Metro Credit Union) You work hard for your money – let’s make the most of it! During this enrichment, you will learn how to create a spending plan, identify the various types of savings accounts and associated risks, learn how to write a check and stay on track with your checking account, understand credit and the importance of your credit score and identify a potential career. You will then attend a Reality Fair where you put your career, salary and credit score into action by creating a real budget! There will be many interactive activities and games along the way – becoming financially fit today can make you a millionaire tomorrow! 8th grade required     Typing- Amy Leveroni Typing basics will be taught to 4th and 5th graders using interactive programs. Gansenberg Learn basic ukulele technique using a wide range of music, including some of your favorite songs! Young At Art- Meg Dall $25.00 per student In keeping with the traditional methods of Expeditionary Learning, this slide-illustrated tour will focus on a particular painting, discuss the technique and review the fascinating details surrounding the historical period of the masterpiece. Looking at art enhances literary and writing skills, exploring innovative artistic activities that boost language development and reading comprehension. YOUNG AT ART is an art appreciation course covering the history of art through the ages, up to and including contemporary art. Drawing activities will accompany the presentations. Many great masters will be discussed. This course will be a great prep for school or family museum visits!
