Jewish Museum in Prague

The textile collection from the Prague Jewish Museum

belongs to the biggest textile art collections in the Czech

Republic, it contains more than 11,000 collectibles. Its

most precious part is the collection of „large synagogue

textile“, which includes more than 2,200 of synagogue

curtains, 4,200 Torah mantles, garments and ceremonial

textiles.

Majority of the fund is represented by unique textiles from

the 16th and 17th century, which contain mainly

embroidered curtains decorated with scallops from the

times of Rudolf II. We can admire the oldest curtains in the

Maisel synagogue: the Peristicker curtain from 1592, which

middle piece consisting of different silk fabrics may easily

be the oldest piece of patchwork in the Czech Republic`

and the synagogue curtain of Mordechaj Maisel, who

founded the synagogue and was the most prominent

Jew at the court for the king and emperor Rudolf II. The

curtain is richly decorated, the middle piece is made of

the unique Italian atlas silk, heavily embroidered with

golden bobbin lace.

Synagogue curtains from the Czech and Moravian

embroidery school are also outstanding textiles. Most of

them were made in the end of the 17th century and

include the curtain of Meir Tausk from 1673, which is also

exhibited in the Maisel Synagogue and features a small

Hebrew inscription along the lower edge („To celebrate

the craft of my hands. Berl, son of Ejzak Chajat“). The

exposition within the Klaus Synagogue features, right

opposite the entrance, the oldest Moravian synagogue

curtain which was given to the Synague in Mikulov by

rabbi David Oppenheimer in 1695.

A lot more common are textiles dated in the 18th century,

which include many pieces from poorer villages in the

countryside. These textiles may be found in the Klaus

synagogue. Let us name the blue silk curtain, with plastic

column and appliqué from Boskovice. The biggest part of

the Jewish museum collection is dated to the 19th

century and is inspired by different historical styles. It is

necessary to draw your attention to the Synagogue

curtain from Jemnice from 1812, which is dominated by a

magnificent Chanukah candelabra. This curtain is also to

be found on the ground floor of the Klaus synagogue.

The Patchwork and Embroidery of Indian Banjara People

The Banjara textile pieces belong to the most beautiful ones to be found all over India. Thus, the art of this

hinduistic ethnics makes an important part of Indian culture.

Formerly migrating communities of Banjaras who were transporting goods and before all supporting the

Mughal troops lost those means of subsistence with the onset of Indian railway in the 19th century. The Banjaras

have gradually settled in more-or-less all of the Indian states, before all in Decca, the plateau of Central India,

which is defined by the State of Gujarat in the West, the State of Andhra Pradesh in the East, and the State of

Karnataka in the South. Although the Banjara are mostly working in agriculture or as seasonal workers while

building roads or telecommunication works today, they still perform the role of ´peripathetics nomads´ with the

character of a society reserved towards the majority neighbours.

Generally said, the art of Banjara patchwork and embroidery is a very typical and traditional one, although

with many local variants as well. This concerns most of the typology of Banjara women´s garment, too /type of

skirt, cover of a neck named ´gala´, etc./ and, before all, many cathegories of textile pieces connected with

the original way of life, let us say: a life „on the road“. Banjara were producing many types of various bags or

small pouches used, for example, for small change or betel, big ´marriage´ bags, narrow and long money-

bags, ritual bags for coconut or composed bags for spices, textile pieces to decorate their animals. Except the

ritual square pieces to cover the jars with water or meal during the festivals, the square pieces to sit on or

longitudinal pieces used as a cradle, the Banjaras have no textile used to decorate the interiors like, for

example, various covers or the ´torans´, i.e. hangings above the door, and other pieces used by the Indian

majority communities.

Previously, the Banjaras were very poor, and because of that the textile basis used for embroidery is usually

very simple cotton piece – frequently even repeatedly used and with visible rests of printed or tie-and-dye

motifs - as well as the material for embroidery is wool or cotton thead, and only exceptionally silk. All of the big

pieces /of the square shape before all/ are - using the technique of patchwork - composed of smaller square

or longitudinal parts as a sign of sparing the material when using all possible rests. On the contrary, the Banjara

love decoration and therefore their textile is decorated with many ornamental elements: small pieces of mirror

named ´shisha´, glass or metal beads, coins or buttons, and, before all, cowri shells /Cyproa moneta/ which is

used not only for decoration but as a symbol of fertility, as well. Next, cowrie – as mirrorwork – should preserve

the owner and avert an evil attack. Another typical sign of Banjara embroidery is usage af textile application,

i.e. sort of patchwork technique again. All these categories of decoration are used by many other ethnics, as

well - mostly the ethnics of Western India -, but nowhere in such a complex shape. Very typical seems to be the

abnormally huge – even extravagant when compared with other Indian women - usage of jewellery of the

Banjaras which is again made from very cheap and simple material: ´white metal´ and coins /only previously

silver ones/, cowrie shells, wool or cotton pamplons and seeds. The jewellery is usually framing the face and

covering the breast of a woman in several layers.

stand in Hall 2. The purpose is to help you with

any issue or querry you might have, be it

related to the exhibition, worshops or Prague in

general.

6. ročník PPM – Basic Information

Visitors of the 6thPPM can admire various collections and exhibitions, all of them of high

contemporary technical quality. Thanks to European Patchwork Meeting the international

competition Tanglewith 35 quilts (incl. 3 jury members) will be presented.

From France originates also the Patchwork France collection of traditional quilts, most of them

contemporary mastered replicas of old American pieces. For the second time in Prague Mrs.

Gudrun Heinz shows her last year project Freedom, European A4 mini quilts using any possible

textile technique. Central gallery will belong to Mrs. Pia Welsch from Germany with 3 thematic

exhibitions. Another gallery will show Austrian Quilts, many of the authors being regularly part

of the PPM visitors and teachers.

Workshop speakers will bring their own quilts as well, so that you can admire those of Ricky

Tims, Monique Gilbert, Gabriele Schultz-Herzberger and Lilo Wesely, not speaking about

Kimberly Einmo who will also supervise her project for PPM – the Mystery Quilt PPM 2011 and

2012.

Also Czech patchwork can boast on its collections. Art Quilt Club CZ brings another challenge

of material used, quilts of Wool will afterwards travel to other European festivals. Two

competitions have an obligatory theme: Hole and Log Cabin. Individual quilters will be

presented in both Czech and Internationalcategories. Visitors will not miss club quilts and some

rarities and records.
