Happy Almost Spring! I am looking forward to dusting off our bicyclesand enjoying our nightly bike rides to the park with my hubby and kids. For me, thefresh springtime air and blooming flowers and trees are reminders to beenvironmentally responsible. Even as Cosmetic Chemists, we are increasinglychallenged to create environmentally friendly formulations. At our last meeting PerryRomanowski educated us on the challenge that we face as formulators when taskedto create a formula that is natural or organic when there is no legal definition for thesetypes of formulations. His presentation, “A Cosmetic Chemists Guide to NaturalFormulating Standards” discussed some of the key nongovernmental organizationsthat have published standards that companies can use for guidance. Since thedefinition varies between organizations such as COSMOS, Whole Foods and NaturalProducts Association, it was extremely helpful to understand the key differencesbetween them. Perry also discussed the pros and cons of formulating according toone of the standards for natural formulations. Maybe one of these standards appealedto you for your natural formulations?

It was such an honor to present Melissa Tolla with the Midwest Chapter Merit Award, aNational Award that is awarded to a Chapter Member for outstanding service, dedication, and voluntary services. Melissa served as Chair in 2012 where one of hermajor contributions as Chair was the introduction to “Skype” monthly meetings withChapters close to us. She continues to be an active and contributing member to theMidwest SCC working with the Teamworks, Scholarship and Technical Symposiumcommittees. Melissa also secures our yearly scholarship winners and invites them toour meeting to receive their awards. She is also a key person that our Chapter turns towith questions and advice. Melissa is a key asset to our Chapter and very deservingof this award. Congratulations Melissa!

We were also feeling the love at the February meeting with Valentine’s Day themedtrivia. I hope that you had fun and congratulations to the winning table that walkedaway with Google Play gift cards.

The Terracycle Cosmetic Recycling Program collection has officially begun. As areminder, please make sure to bring your empty cosmetic bottles (don’t even worryabout rinsing) and place in the bin at the registration table. It’s that easy! For everyunit that we collect and send to TerraCycle, they will credit us with points that we willredeem to help support the Girls 4 Science Program. We are also setting such a greatexample to be environmentally responsible. Thank you to the members that broughttheir empty cosmetic bottles to last months meeting. Cindy is keeping track of thenumber of bottles that we have collected and will post in the Community Outreachcolumn. Let’s try to double it next month!

That’s all for this month’s news, notes and inspiration. If you have any ideas or wouldlike to volunteer for a committee, please free to contact me at [email protected].

See you at the next meeting!

Sincerely,Gina Cosby

Chapter News

Thank you to all the members of our wonderfulMidwest SCC organization for electing me asSecretary for 2015. I look forward to getting to knowboth our current members as well as the futuremembers of our society! I have been an activemember of the Midwest SCC organization since 2009and excited to be able to contribute back to thiswonderful organization. I would like to take thismoment to introduce myself.

I am originally from southern China and moved to Chicago when I was about fiveyears old. Chicago is what I call home and where I’ve spent most of my entire life.A proud product of the Chicago Public School system, I’ve always enjoyedlearning and science was always my favorite subject. An early summer internshipexperience at Argonne National Laboratory inspired me to pursue a more scientificfield.

I graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It was only during my junior year summer internship that I beganexploring the dynamic world of personal care. I spent that summer interning atStepan Company in their Personal Care R&D department and gained valuable laband work experience while learning about the wonderful “workhorses” of ourindustry – surfactants! It was at Stepan where my supervisor handed me shampooprototypes from what would soon be my current company, Corn ProductsInternational. After graduation, I began my professional career working as aPersonal Care Application Specialist for Corn Products International which wouldlater become Ingredion Incorporated. The more I was immersed in cosmeticscience, the more I wanted to learn about the art of formulating which is why Icompleted the Complete Cosmetic Chemist Training Program. By May 2012, Itransitioned into business development for Personal Care, Fabric and Home Care.Transitioning from the laboratory to business development role has been anexciting experience because I was able to gain more insight with customers whileleveraging the hands-on technical knowledge gained in my previous role.

I love traveling and learning about other cultures and desire to experience howpeople live in other parts of the world. My curiosity for other cultures has taken meto different parts of South America, Europe, China and India. I currently live in theIrving Park neighborhood of Chicago and love exploring all the diverse and uniqueneighborhoods that this city has to offer. I enjoy trying out different restaurants andlove vintage and local artisan shops. The past few years, I have gained a newappreciation for all things handmade and currently passionate in makinghandmade products.

I look forward to an exciting year as your Secretary and would love to meet you atfuture SCC meetings and events!
