Historic First Reform Service at Western Wall!!! By Rabbi Devon Lerner

On Thursday, February 25, Rabbi Ada Zavidov (center in photo above), of Kehilat Har-El, Jerusalem, and Rabbi Zachary Shapiro (left), of Temple Akiba, Culver City, California, led the first official Reform Worship Service at Western Wall, using B’Hadrat Kodesh. This vol-

ume, published in Israel by the Society for Classical Reform Judaism and Har-El Congregation of Jerusalem, and edited by Rabbis Howard A. Ber-man and Ada Zavidov, is a modern Hebrew translation of historic English passages from the SCRJ’s Union Prayer Book- Sinai Edition, Revised. It was conceived to provide a worship resource for Israeli Reform Movement, enabling it to embrace the shared heritage of Progressive Judaism around the world.

Responding to this occasion, Rabbi Howard Berman, SCRJ Executive Director said: “Over a hundred American rabbis – already experienc-ing this emotional historical moment, were introduced to our work and influence in an unprecedented way. I cannot overstate the immense significance of this for the Society – in “one fell swoop”, more rabbis and leaders have encountered the renewed vitality and vision of the Classical Reform renaissance than we have ever achieved in any other setting. The broadened awareness and appreciation for our mission that they will bring back to their congregations throughout the country, will be immeasurable, and will have lasting effects. And as the attached photos reveal, all of the national leaders – Rabbis Rick Jacobs of the URJ, Steve Fox of the CCAR, Aaron Panken of HUC, and Denise Eger, CCAR President, were all there and sharing in this experience.

“The significance this (of the opening of the new egalitarian section of the wall and of the use of B’handrat Kodesh for the first official Reform Worship Service), added Rabbi Berman, is reflected in the proclama-tion this morning by leading Orthodox rabbis in Jerusalem, of a Day of Mourning and Fasting for the desecration of the Wall by the Reform ” heretics and agents of Satan…”

CRT and The Society for Classical Reform Judaism

We want to inform our members of two important recent developments in the work of the Society for Classical Reform Judaism - the national voice of advocacy for the historic liberal spiritual values and worship traditions of our national Reform Movement. Rabbi Ber-man is the Executive Director of the SCRJ, and our members Rabbi Devon Lerner and Merle Marquis serve on the Society's staff. At the recent national Biennial Convention of our broader national body, the Union for Reform Judaism, the Society presented a program on the theme "Beyond the Warm Welcome: Congregational Inclusivity as a Core Reform Jewish Value" This learning session, which attracted about 125 leaders of congregations throughout the country, focused on the broad, inclusive ideals of the Classical Reform understanding of Jewish worship and identity as a resource for the inclusion of interfaith and multicultural families and spiritual seekers of many backgrounds. A panel of temple leaders, including our own Todd Katzman and Marc LaCasse, shared their own personal experiences of discovery and deep commitment to this approach. The full account of this important program- and the narratives of these very moving stories - are included in the upcoming issue of The Reform Advocate, the journal of the Society. All mem-bers of CRT receive this publication - you may also access it online at www.renewreform.org IN ADDITION - we want to share the wonderful news of the recent dramatic and historic devel-opments in Jerusalem, with the first egalitarian, gender-inclusive Reform Service at the Kotel- the Western Wall: http://renewreform.org/blog/

The Reform AdvocateVolume 1, Number 1: Rosh Hashanah 5769 - Autumn 2008

A New Year… and a New Chapter! There is always a striking resonance to the fact that the beginning of a new fall season in the religious, cultural and educational life of contemporary American society echoes the ancient rhythms of our Jewish Calendar. This New Year, 5769, indeed heralds fresh horizons for the Society for Classical Reform Judaism, reflected in this inaugural issue of our new journal, The Reform Advocate.

This sacred High Holy Day season offers us the precious gift of new beginnings and unexplored paths for our journeys, even as we cherish the lessons and traditions of the past. As one of the oldest New Year festivals still being observed in the world today, Rosh Hashanah proclaims Judaism’s revolutionary teach-ing that history is not cyclical and static—as other ancient cultures believed—but rather, that human experience is dynamic and evolutionary—always progressing toward new heights and greater revelations of Divine truth. For each of us, personally, this means that we need not be bound by the limitations and regrets of the past … but rather, that there is always an opportunity to make a fresh start, and begin anew. Traditionally referred to as the “Birthday of the World”, Rosh Hashanah reminds us that each of us is a co-worker and partner in the unfolding process of Creation … that our world - and our lives - will ultimately be what we make of them.

This first Rosh Hashanah in the history of the SCRJ indeed finds us on the threshold of great anticipation and exciting, creative possibilities. In the few short months since our founding, we have been blessed with

great progress and success in our mission of advocacy for the historic ideals and traditions of American Reform Judaism as a vital option for contemporary Jews.

As we come once again to this cherished season of renewal and return, the Board of Directors of the Society for Classical Reform Judaism joins me in sending our best wishes to all of our friends and supporters. We all share together in the hopes and dreams so beautifully expressed in our beloved Union Prayer Book:

With deep humility we approach You, Our God, at this sacred time. May we listen reverently to its sacred admonition. Give us the will to serve You with singleness of heart, so that as we grow

older in years, we may grow stronger in wisdom, broader in charity, and more steadfast in faith.

Hidden from our eyes are the events of the future. But we trust in You and fear not! Open unto us in mercy the portals of the New Year, and grant unto us life and health, contentment and peace… Amen

Faithfully,Rabbi Howard A. BermanExecutive Director
