The international projects I have worked on have taught me to be open-minded, courageous, assertive, sensitive, flexible and, to some extent, improvisational. I have learned to do extensive research in advance of the project yet, once on site, to remain open and adaptable to unexpected or changing conditions, from the availability (or lack of it) of skilled labor and building materials to local politics, to interpersonal relations, to gender issues, to weather. No matter what cards were dealt to me, I managed to persevere and prosper and carry my commitments through to the end – and to stay true to what I believe in: sustainable design, organic architecture, ecological health, and, above all, respect for all people and cultures. The combination of these professional skills and personal values lends itself especially well to high-end residential and commercial work for international and culturally diverse clients. My ideal professional situation would be a medium-sized firm whose expertise includes interior design, architecture, landscape design, and, possibly, master planning. I am grateful for any consideration you can give to me – a young person, just twenty-five years old, eager and hope- ful, who is looking forward to taking her next big step into a new, exciting, but relatively unknown universe. With my background in interior design and architecture, I have the ability to design both inside and out.

I am grateful for any consideration you can give to me – a young person, just twenty-five years old, eager and hope-ful, who is looking forward to taking her next big step into a new, exciting, but relatively unknown universe.

Respectfully,

Maria Reva

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT HOUSESao Paulo, Brazil - 3.15.13

I am deeply interested in exploring the different ways that architecture can influence the psychological state of the public inside or outside the building. An international public building that is taken very seriously by visitors who come from different cultural backgrounds and speak different languages. Also, I’m interested in designing a building that is democratic. A building with little hierarchy, but demands equal respect and justice with its architecture.

SITE CONDITIONS:A unique condition about this site is that it sits on a high seismic zone. In May 2008, Wolong was dev-astated by a major earthquake where 70,000 people died and 18,000 are missing. Wolong is only 10 km away from the epi-center and its captive panda sanctu-ary holds 70% of Giant Pandas in the world. National Geographic have been working with Marc Brody to help bring these facili-ties to a functional state since the earthquake, but the roads that take you there are still in very poor condition, and it is not projected to be fixed until 2012.

DESIGN CONCEPT:My design was inspired by a tropical vine wrapping around a strong bamboo branch as it tries to survive with the help of another plant. This image, made me think of captive pandas, who try to survive, by trusting humans to take care of them, since they are too weak to survive on their own. This “natural reinforcement” support system is the message that I think is important to pass to both; the locals, who need to improve their waste management and way of life, as well as the visitors, and investors, who can help support another living thing. This helped shape the form of the buildings that are “linked” together with an atrium that is the gate to the path-way of an amazing experience of visiting the giant panda.

Structurally, the building responds to its seismic conditions, with its shape (which is symmetrically distributed mass). It is divided in 4 areas, to help minimize the vibrations transferred. It also sits on seismic springs, or isolation plates that separate the building from the soil, and allows it to be completely detached from the ground in case of another earthquake. Its form is also shaped to meet an acoustical function, which is to bounce off the noise pollution from the road, and magnify the sound of the rushing river.

Building Systems feature is a mini hydro electric station that would generate electricity that would power the building and reduce the cost to operate the buildings. Radiant floor heating for the winter months, and fire sprinkled throughout with pipes connected to the river.

Global View is located in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The primary functions of this establishment are asian art retail store and wellness recreational healing center. Currently, the existing Dharma Center and teachers’ residence are joined in a two-story structure which is called the “Gold house”. My client was interested in improving the current conditions of the Healing Center by separating the teach-ers’ residence from the Dharma Center and providing ad-ditional space to meet and expand the program. This will separate the residential and public space on her prop-erty and bring more privacy and comfort to the commu-nity. The Gold house will transform into a residence, and an adjacent structure (a garage that is currently used for storage space) will become the new community kitchen and dining room on site.
