In November 2001, the MARITIME TRAINING INSTITUTE of Karachi was declared as an approved outreach center for the Glasgow CollegeOf Nautical Studies U.K, for conducting the HND-Higher National Diploma in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering. Thus it became the first institute in the Marine Sector of Pakistan which is affiliated with the British Education System under the Scottish Qualification Authority U.K.

The MARITIME TRAINING INSTITUTE of Karachi was established in October 1998. Authenticated and approved by The Govt. of Pakistan, It is Situated on the waterfront west edge of the China Creek, neighboring theKarachi Harbour. It is one of the premier marine institutes in the private sector, dedicated to impart knowledge and provide comprehensive education and training to maintain compatibility with modern technological advancement as well as meet the ever growing demands of the marine industry.

Glasgow College of Nautical Studies is situated in the heart of Glasgow on the south bank of the river Clyde, next to Glasgow Green.Currently the College occupies two sites in close proximity. The main campusin Thistle Street contains three of the College Faculties.There are over 1,800 students on campus at any one time. The Glasgow College of Nautical Studies UK has an international reputation in imparting education and training in the sphere of Marine Industry, with students attending from all over the United Kingdom and abroad. Since November 2001 Maritime Training Institute, designated as an

outreach centre of GLASGOW COLLEGE OF NAUTICAL STUDIES, to conduct the (HND) Higher National Diploma Courses in (two parts). The first year studies are carried out at Maritime Training Institute, Karachi while the second year studies at the GCNS, Glasgow, UK.

Being a Deck Officer, you will start your career as Deck Cadet. During the 20 months of sea training, you are prepared for the strict Nautical Discipline, and you will eventually be responsible for the Navigation, Cargo handling, Maintenance of Deck and related Machinery, Safety, Security and other associated duties onboard Merchant Ships.This skill is based on academic know how and shall enable you to obtain O.O.W (Officer of Watch) Certificate of competency of operational level and gradually, upon further qualifying Management Level Class I (Deck) you shall attain the rank of Master of the Ship (Captain).In progressing from Deck Cadet to Captain, you will be serving as 3rd officer, 2nd officer and Ch. Officer. Promotion from one rank to the other will depend on the Certificate of Competency you hold and the quality of your experience and of course professional skills.As an able young officer in this system, you can gain smooth and rapid path of career development. Even so, the Process is unlikely to take less than ten years from the commencement of a cadetship to qualifying with Class I Certificate. AIMS OF THE COURSE1. To develop the competency required to enable the cadets to carry out his duties as Officer of the Watch on board Merchant ships.2. To provide the cadets with HND qualification which is accepted by MCA for obtaining exemption from some of academic papers of class 2 (Deck) & Class 1 (Deck) and to comply with MCA’s standard’s certification requirements.3. To satisfy all the requirements laid down by the MCA,the Merchant Navy Training Board and the I.M.O Convention on standards of training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW 95), the Institute is offering a Higher National Diploma in Nautical Science. On qualifying O.O.W (Officer of the Watch) Certificate of Competency, you will start sea carrier as a ENGINE WATCHKEEPER and will be responsible to the Chief Engineer for the operation and control of all the engineering systems onboard ship, servicing a whole range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic machinery/appliances.Most ships have 4 or 5 Engineer Officers ranging in seniority from E.W.K. Officer, through the ranks of 3rd and 2nd Engineer Officer leading to, Chief Engineer Officer. In progressing from Engineer Cadet to Chief Engineer Officer you can expect to serve in each of these capacities in turn. Promotion from one to the other rank will depend on the Certificate of Competency you hold, the quality of your experience and, of course, personal capabilities.

CAREER AS AN ENGINEER OFFICER

As an able young Engineer officer with this system you can gain competencyin a smooth and fast progressing career. The process is unlikely totake less than eight years from the commencement of a cadetship to qualifyingclass I (Chief Engineers Certificate of Competency).

EX-RADIO OFFICERS & DIESEL MECHANICS

Now you can get Marine Engineer’s license (COC) from UK after going through a conversion course, especially designed for existing seafarers of above category.The course is specially designed for existing seafarers from Pakistan, who arewell motivated and wish to enter a prospective career. This package is designedto minimize the period of stay in UK till attaining (E.O.O.W) certificate, thus reducing total cost.

The educational objectives are, in general terms, to deliver course of educationand training designed to prepare candidates for the Engineer Officer of theWatch examination (E.O.O.W) and provide additional academic support in Class2 academic subjects examinations, to be conducted in accordance with SQA, mandatory training/skill, according to STCW 95.

COURSE CONTENTS

Same as Level 3 SVQ ENGINEER CADET except Class 2 MCA examination preparation modules (UK). It is optional for those who also want to get Class II COC.

Phase 2 12 Months to study at GLASGOW COLLEGE OF NAUTICAL STUDIES, U.K to cover HN Units and other subject matter. In addition, the SVQ Level 3 portfolio will be assessed and preparation given for the EOOW oral examination. Successful completion of Phases 1&2 provides progression to Level 3 B.Eng Mechanical & Power Plant Systems undertaken at Glasgow Caledonian University. (Maritime Training Institute, Karachi will facilitate for Student’s Visa to all successful cadets upon completion of Phase 1)

WORKSHOP Marine Engineering Trainees, do have Practical Trainings ATKarachi Port Trust which is the (Govt approved workshop for Marine Engineering Apprenticeship) to carry out their workshopassignments as stipulated in their syllabus.

In addition to the above, other workshops namely:-

1) M/s Hussain Engineering Works Ltd & 2) M/s S. H. Enterprises

are also used for Bench Fitting, Plumpring ,Welding Lathe andMilling work available for their day-to-day works.



GP – III (Ratings) Including Support Level

SCOPE

This course covers recommended IMO’s Model Training Program Part I ofEngine and Deck Ratings respectively. The syllabus also satisfies the recommendations of IMO/ILO Documents of Guidance 1985. The syllabus for training as a General Service (GS) has been included to cater for additional requirements of catering department as well.

OBJECTIVES

To train in such a manner that a “trainee” after successful completion of this course, should be able to work efficiently on deck, in engine and as well as in catering Departments.

Upon completion of the required sea going service under the supervision of Deck Officer/Engineer Officer of the watch, the trainee will be eligible to appear for evaluation of the competency for certification of rating (support level) forming part of a navigational/engineering watch respectively, from the Administration.

The Institute of Chartered ShipbrokersUnder its Royal Charter (1911) the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) sets and examinesthe syllabus for entry into international shipping’s professional body; and thus has a central partto play in maintaining the highest professional standards in a vital global business.

Pakistan Branch is headed by Capt. S.M.A. Mahmoodi as Founder Honorary Secretary andChief Education Officer of the Institute. The aim of the branch is to promote Shipping Business Studies to produce Shipping Professionals worldwide.

Professional MembershipMembership of the Institute (MICS) is achieved by candidates passing the professional QualifyingExaminations or by dissertation and specifying the Controlling Council of their suitability. Membership proves that the incumbent has a professional understanding and broad spectrumknowledge of the shipping industry.

The examinations are held in April each year at centers worldwide. Prizes, generously sponsored by companies in the shipping industry, are awarded to the candidates who have been most successful in the annual examinations.

Tutorship Courses The Branch does have Tutorship Material for all subjects and can be purchased by the student at

cost of Rs.7000 per subject for self studies. However tutorial classes can also be arranged forstudents’ subject inducement for selective subjects at an additional cost of Rs.3000 per subject.

ICS DISTANCE LEARNING CENTER IN PAKISTAN

The Institute of Charters Shipbrokers, founded in 1911, is the professional body that sets the highest standards of professional service to the shipping industry through the provision of an internationally recognized education program.

The Institute believes it is essential that shipping professionals have sufficient knowledge of the law, insurance, economics etc so that he/she can communicate with a specialist professional. This results in less confusion, misunderstanding and hopefully less contractual risk to the company. Perhaps it goes withoutsaying that the obverse is true that a maritime lawyer at all needs the understanding of the shipping industry to be able to place his/her work in context.

For those new to the industry or not sure if professional studies, the foundation diploma is recommended for them, which will give a solid grounding and although a stand-alone qualification, can lead to the Qualifying Examinations and in due course membership (MICS) of the Institute.

The Qualifying Examination provides a thorough understanding of shipping business for the ambitious professional. All successful candidates would go on to be Members (MICS) and eventually Fellows (FICS) of the Institute and thereby be entitled to call themselves a “Chartered Shipbroker”

Institute of Chartered Shipbroker - Pakistan Branch, which is an ever first overseas Distance Learning Centre (DLC) of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers UK is conducting Correspondence & Tutorial Courses by approved tutors of the “tutorship”, preparing candidates for the qualifying examination & Foundation Diploma Examination in April every year in close association with Maritime Training Institute.

Which is itself monitored by the ODL Quality Council of UK. The fees structure is substantially lower than the UK–based fees, which is affordable in Pakistan,
