The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) is a joint effort by MPA, the Agency for Science,

Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Economic Development Board (EDB) in

partnership with local Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and reflects Singapore’s

continued commitment to the maritime industry. The SMI aims to develop strategies and

programmes related to the academic, policy and R&D aspects of the maritime industry.

Key focus areas of the SMI include sectors such as shipping, port and maritime services, as

well as offshore and marine engineering.

The SMI will coordinate and align the strategic activities of the various maritime institutes

established at our local IHLs. It will work towards attracting renowned academics and

researchers to base in Singapore and groom the next generation of local maritime

academia talent. It also aims to increase the pool of maritime-trained students and

professionals in Singapore. The SMI will also encourage more industry R&D projects to be

undertaken in Singapore.

As a whole-of-Government approach, the agencies have committed $350 million to fund

initiatives through the SMI. The setup of the SMI will strengthen Singapore’s manpower,

research capabilities and enhance overall competitiveness.

Collaborative Programmes/Projects

Over the years, our sponsors, MPA, A*STAR and EDB have

supported various efforts in the field of maritime, marine and

offshore. These include funding support for R&D initiatives to

both industry and public sector research institutes. With such

support, the research institutes under A*STAR and the IHLs have

also developed relevant expertise and capabilities and they are

valued as the strategic partners of SMI. The SMI will work closely

with our sponsors and partners to strength the link between the

industry and the public sector research institutes.

SMI will be positioned as a common interface between the

maritime industry and the collective maritime education and

research & development (R&D) capabilities residing within the

IHLs (Universities and Polytechnics) and A*STAR Research

Institutes (RIs) in Singapore. Future maritime education and R&D

capabilities may be extended to other IHLs and RIs.

SMI Forum & Thematic Workshops

SMI ACTIVITIES

SMI Forum Guest-of-Honour:

Minister for Transport and Second Minister for

Foreign Affairs Mr Lui Tuck Yew

SMI sees the vital need for the exchange of information and

close collaboration between the academia and the industry

through established engagement platforms.

The SMI will organise annual forum and regular workshops to

induce greater industry-academia interactions. In this

process, SMI and the industry will identify possible gaps and

new areas to be addressed.

The inaugural SMI Forum was held in October 2011. This

annual platform gathers industry and academia thought

leaders across maritime, marine & offshore sectors to share

ideas, new directions and industry developments.

In addition to the SMI Forum, structured thematic workshops

highlighting the works of researchers and industry challenges

will draw discussions on selected topics. The outcomes of

these workshops will allow SMI to better define the area of

focus for thematic calls leading to relevant funding support

and industry development.
