Mr Cat has to goCHELSEA PIETERSE

HOWICK’SAmberValley boardof trustees have said Mr Cathas to go.

The heartbreaking story of anelderly woman, Sylvia Reid (88),havingtopartwithherbelovedMrCatdue to a spat within Amber Valleywentviral thisweekendandgatheredmassive online support.

The online petition created byBritish citizen Cheryl van Dyk hascollected over 17 000 signatures intwo days, all in support of Reidkeeping her furry friend.

However, Amber Valley’s bodycorporate have stood firm, sayingthat after careful consideration theyhave decided that Mr Cat has to go.

“We are unfortunately faced witha very difficult situation in view ofcomplaints received from the neigh-bours of the owner regarding thewandering habits of the cat in ques-

tion.“Wehaveeverysympathywith the

owner and have tried very hard tomediate between the concernedparties - we have unfortunately hadno success in our endeavours.

“Thismatter has been extant for anumber of months and we have nowcome to the stagewhere the issue re-quires to be resolved.”

The board of trustees said whilethey appreciated the sentimentsexpressed in the online petition andFacebook, they had a duty of care toall their members, including thecomplainants, and did “not envisageany other solution to the problem”.

Support has poured in for theelderly pair.

A letter from Susan Kemp said itwas essential for the felineandReid’shealth that they stay together.

“The impact of pets on the healthand happiness of the aged have beenproved many times over.

“A separation of Granny and MrCat would break her heart and affecther health badly. It is a precariousstage of life. Anything can tip thescales,” she said.

Another letter from PMB localHereen Godley said that thosecomplaining aboutMrCat alongwiththe body corporate “should beashamed of themselves”.

“All Mr Cat wants is to live out hisdays in the company of the people heloves and trusts. Sylvia and herdaughter Penny Reid obtainedpermission tokeephim, thus theyarenot in contravention of any conductrules.”

MR Cat’s story received manymessagesof support on theonlinear-ticle on News24.

Reader Shannon Bezuijen said,“Everything is blown out ofproportion in a retirement village.Small issues become so huge. Whenthere’s nothing else to do but to

complain, this is what happens. Thiscat can be your best friend. Rather acat than someonemoaning at you allthe time.”

ReaderNicholaSmithagreedwithBezuijen and said when she retiresshe would only look at villages thatallowed animals.

“IaminmyfiftiesandwhenIstartlooking at my retirement homes Iwill definitely only look at thosethat allow pets. How cruel andridiculous.

“I will never desert mypets.Frankly theneighboursshould stop whining andenjoy the ‘visits’. Hope Idon’t become old andcrabby,” she said.

However, not allcomments supportedMr Cat and Reid’sfriendship.

Reader DaurelMergui said“asheartlessas thisbodycorporate appears to be, permissionis always given on condition thatthere is no explicit breachof the rulesor conditions set out by the trustees.

“Pet ownership in sectional title is

a privilege and not a right. There arealways two sides to a dispute so itwouldbeleft toanarbitratortodecideon the fate of the pet…Bodies corpo-ratemustenforcerulestoensuredan-gerous precedents are not set.”

LOVE broke all boundaries andobstacles to unite MeganHunter and her prince

charming Warren. With the world celebrating Rare

Conditions Day on 28 February,Megan would like to reach out to thepublic and let them know that it isokay to live with a rare condition.

While shewas inGrade10,Meganfelt her cheeks becoming numb, butshe could not get a clear diagnosisfrom her doctor.

Despite struggling to swallowanything, even water, her generalpractitioner mis-diagnosed her withGlobus Hystericus, which is apsychological illness that makes onefeelasiftheyhavealumpinthethroat, therefore making it difficult toswallow.

At this time, shewas only eating aquarter of a jar of baby food.

Her mobility ground to a haltand immediate action was neededfor more medical attention.

Eager to finish her studies so thatshe could enrol for a teachingdiploma, simple tasks such ascombing her hair, reading, chewing, talking and walking became achallenge.

While in Grade 11, she wasdiagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, which is a chronic autoimmuneneuromuscular disease character-ised by swings of muscle weaknessand fatigue.

Megan was immediatelyhospitalised at St Augustine’sHospital in Durban, and herdoctor advised her that she had toundergo surgery to remove herthymus, which is found behind thesternum.

However, removing the sternumwould not exactly solve the problem.

Megan continued to receivetreatment and was able tomatriculate at Howick High School.

“It would take me about threehours to swallow 5ml of water. I hada permanent bed in hospital andI am glad that my mother helped meto get dressed and bath.

“When I was younger, I wantedto be a teacher but now I can neverdo this. I then studiedbeauty therapyfor three years at the Academyof Beauty Therapy in Hillcrest.

“When I graduated, I was reallyexcited because that’s when I saidto myself at least I have donesomething,” said Megan.

While dealing with her illness,Megan found love.

Two years ago, she married herhusbandWarren. Threemonths intodating, Megan got septicemia andended up in a coma.

Warren said the experiencecemented their relationship.

“When I met Megan I didn’t knowthat she had an illness. When therelationshipgot serious she toldme ifI wanted to leave I was more thanwelcome to do so.

“I thoughtitwasunfairto leaveherand now I am glad that I did not. Weare married now.

“I don’t think that you get used toit andunderstand it. It’s not her fault, but the illness is part of life.

“Wedon’tmaketheillnessthecen-tre of our lives. It s a sub factor thatwe deal with,” said Warren.

Despite the fluctuations of herillness,Megan is now able to eat, talkand use her mobility.

“I don’t want people to see me asthe sick one. The condition I livewithis part of who I am,” she said.

Get with the Modernera MsunduziITwas very sad to read that theMsunduzi

Municipality’splan to recoupoutstandingfines against the reissue of licences

has been scuppered, and I would liketo encourage them to follow theJohannesburg and Tswane route to ensurethat they do, eventually, secure the right towithhold licences against outstandingfines.

Thesame‘privilege’shouldbeextendedtoall municipalitieswithin South Africa.

I support theMsunduzi Munici-pality (and othermunicipalities) inthis regardbecause acertain gentlemanwith two carsregistered inCamperdown (NCnumber plates) hasgiven my Scottsvillestreet address to the authorities and Iam inundated with at least two, sometimesfour, notices per week for: crossing a redtraffic light, speeding along Alan PatonDrive, parking facing on-coming traffic, parking in a “no parking zone” to name but

a few.Thepersonconcernedalternatesbetween

using his Mercedes Benz and a Toyota. He is not related to me in any way and he

does not have the right to use my privateaddress to hide his misdemeanours.

I continually correspond withthe Msunduzi Municipality (who wereresponsible for issuing the ‘tickets’) but theysay that they cannot do anything until the

gentleman in questionreports to renew hislicence for the vehiclesin question.

I have, however, been warned to expectthat officers may cometo my residence toexecute a Warrant ofArrest for failure to paythe fines.

Come on, MsunduziMunicipality, get with it

and join the modern era by updating yourcriminal procedures so that you can catchthese ‘criminals’ and earn much deservedrevenue for the city coffers.

AUBREY BOWLESScottsville

THE garden refuse site in Ritchie Road inPelham is a shameful disgrace and yet such apure example of mismanagement.

The site was established as a service tothe community and is now nothing more thana dumping ground for the lazy and a haven forvagrants hoping to make some money.

There is no form of control at the site toregulate who dumps what and when theydump it.

The fence surrounding the site was stolenover a year ago and vagrants have taken upresidence in the on-site toilet, which nowaccommodates up to five people a night.

Firesburndailyon thepremisesandsmokeblows over to the surrounding houses.

Municipal security, the SAPS and theMsunduzi council are not willing or preparedto do a single thing to resolve these issues, allhavingtheirownexcusesastowhytheyarenotliable for sorting it out.

Iwouldlikethecounciltotakenoteofthefactthat this site is in violation of its own publichealth bylaws as well as the constitutionalrights of all of the ratespayers.

I think it isabout timethat legalproceedingsare instituted against the council to have thissite removed permanently.

If you can’t manage it, then close it.

I AM utterly fascinated by the wondrousclassifiedadsplacedby those inourmidstwhohave clearly attained the status of miracleworkers, and in particular that entered byMaama andBaba Subi in the 28 January issueof Maritzburg Fever.

The unfortunate witness quoted in the adsuffered the indignity of discovering that herhusband’s manhood “was not working”, but Iimagine that her disappointment wasshort-livedwhenshewentontowinaR750000Lotto prize.

Help is clearly at hand for chaps seeking

“manhood enlargement”, with prospectiveclients having the choice of L, XL or XXL.

It all sounds to me like a bit of a stretch. My advice is that interested persons

should proceed with caution, since aninadvertent slip of the scalpel might haveconsequences quite the opposite of thoseintended.

This is not the sort of procedure to beundertaken willy-nilly.

OUR elite, meticulous,hard-working and crack lawenforcement officers.

The latest daring high-speed chase of youngunarmed criminals, whoseonly undoing is a simple,fun-filled race in their own(not stolen) motor vehicles.

I could not in my wildestimaginationconjureuphowitcame about that hardened, experienced police officerssped after these dangerousmurderers who, aftercommitting the ultimate incriminal activity, were actingin a fugitive capacity.

Whatmeritorious service?Those police officers

deserve a medal for bravery.Eighteen bullet holes in avehicle fromwhich there wasnot a single return of gunfire.

The brave officers (don’tforget their medals now) beatuponeof theyoungmenwhilehe was on the floor.

I thank theGod that I servethat the young man who wasshot was not killed.

Just a few weeks ago, another young man was shotdead in a road rage incident.Whodid the shooting?Ohyouguessed it - a police officer.

I did not readily concurwith this friend of mine whovery gravely stated that therewere more criminals in ourlaw enforcement agency thanon the streets. But now I amfully persuaded that this ringstrue.

THE City Council will shortlybe dealing with the 2015/16budget, and once again, acontentious issue which is ofgreat interest to thepublicwillbe the electricity tariffincreases.

At this early stage, it isanticipated that the increasefrom Eskom, which thecouncil has no control over, will be in the region of 12.2%.

Most municipalities havean additional fixed basiccharge as well as a consump-tioncharge,butdonothaveanMCB (ampere charge) as doesMsunduzi Municipality.

On the other hand,MsunduzihadanMCBcharge

but did not have a basiccharge. Some years ago,Msunduzi added a separateDomestic Basic Charge toconsumersaccounts,as itwassuggested that Msunduzishould fall in line with othermunicipalities which have abasic charge.

However, the fact that wehaveanMCBcharge, whereasother municipalities do not,was not taken into account.

The DA believes that thisdoublechargeisanunfairandexcessive burden to consum-ers who are already sufferingwith high electricity costs, albeit for an intermittentservice.

The Domestic BasicCharge should be removed.

The DA also believes thatthe increase in tariff imposedby Eskom for electricityconsumed should not beapplied to the basic MCBcharge.

The DA will thereforepropose that in the nextbudget, theMCBbasic chargeisnotincreasedinlinewiththeEskomtariff increaseandthatthe Domestic Basic Charge bedropped all together.

The debate over electricity tariff increases

IT is the beginning of the year andmedical aidmembers will find themselves faced withincreased membership fees but reducedbenefits.

Some patients collude with medicalpractitioners to defraud the medical aids, hence the situation mentioned abovemanifests itself.

There have been numerous reports in themediaabout swindlesused todefraudmedicalaids.

Patients and doctors are aware of theirwrongdoing; however, many patients are notaware of the ramifications and seriousness oftheir collusion.

Health-carepractitionersareknowntogivecash-strapped patients a “cut” for billing their

medical aids. The biggest annoyance at present is the

shortage of beds for the genuinely ill in privatehospitals.

This must be attributed to memberscolluding with doctors to admit them intohospital in order to receive payouts fromhospital cash-back plans.

The private hospital, the patient and thedoctor all score financially. If the admittingdoctor is a shareholder, then he or she hits thejackpot twice.

It’s an intricate web of deceit anddownright conflict of interest.

My long walk to campus>> “Nothing is impossible if you are prepared to give it your all” - Xolani Mbuyisa.

WHEN Xolani Mbuyisa wasseven years old, his motherpassedawayandhewasleft

in the care of his grandmother, RoseMbuyisa.

Over the course of the next sixyears, Rose lost all her children andwas left as primary caregiver to fourgrandchildren, including Xolani.

Her only source of incomewas thelittle she earned from washing otherpeoples’ clothes.

Then Rose Mbuyisa heard aboutThandanani Children’s Foundation(Thandanani).

When Rose explained hersituation to Thandanani, they beganassisting her through their FamilyStrengthening Program. Thisprogram involves supportingfamilies caring for orphans andvulnerable children over a three yearperiod, with the aim of increasingtheir self-reliance and strengtheningtheir ability to provide for the basicneeds of the children in their care.

Partly as a result of this support,Xolani was able to stay in school andcompletehismatric -with exemption- in 2011.

After matriculating, Xolani wasacceptedtostudyaB.Sc.atUKZN.Hisgrandmother scraped together hisregistration fee and Xolani receivedsupport from the National StudentFinancial Aid Scheme to cover histuition.

However, as he had no money foraccommodation,Xolaniwalked fromhis home in Slangspruit to campusand back each day to attend class - around trip of some 18km.

He did this for two years untilThandanani stepped in to providehim with a travel and subsistencebursary during his final year.

However Xolani’s determinationhas paid off as he graduated fromUKZN last year and is now registeredfor an honours degree.

As a result, Thandanani hasextended his travel and subsistencebursary for a further year.

“Xolani deserves this chance tosucceed.Notonlyhashedemonstrat-

ed remarkable determination butalso remarkable compassion,” saidThandanani’s Director, DuncanAndrew.Andrewexplains that duringhis finalyear, Xolani met another studentwho, like him, had nowhere to stayandsoXolani invitedhim to staywithhis family.

• Distributing school uniforms to children from families they support• Regularly monitoring the school attendance and performance of these children, and• Providing travel and subsistence bursaries to selected students pursuing tertiary studies. In addition, Thandanani is also training staff in Early Childhood Development (ECD) with the aim of introducing a new homebased ECD program in the near future. To find out more about Thandanani and the work that they do, please visit www.thandanani.org.za.To make a contribution to support children like Xolani, please visit www.4kids.org.za.

Emily, a Grade 12 pupil atMaritzburg Christian School, described how a string of disap-pointments turned into a joyousmoment when Ravenswoodexpressed interest in thebookandfinally offered her a contract inDecember last year.

“I [in 2014] submitted mymanuscript to 21 local publishersand the UK and received my fairshare of rejections. But I kept onknocking on the doors until theywere opened,” she said, addingthat she decided to pen a bookwhen she was doing Grade 7 andthat it took her roughly two yearsto write and edit it.

“I have always found it annoy-ing the way society tends tounderestimate the youth so whenI was 15 years old, I decided to

SCOTTSVILLE Primary School has just celebratedits 100th birthday.

As time progressed, Nefdt said that the schoolembraced the multiracial South African society andin 1981, IsiZulu was introduced as part of the school’scurriculum.

“The school prides itself in the caring, familyrelationship that exists between staff and pupils. Thestaff consists of a group of dedicated teachers whogenuinely care for the children,” said Nefdt.

He added that the school is working hard to meetits short term and long term goals.

autofeverPARAMEDICS have sent out an importantmessage to drivers: be alert when reversingyour vehicle.

This comes after several incidents inwhich paramedics have had to attend tomotorists reversing into children. In oneincident, the paramedics attended to a one-year-old who was fatally injured when avehicle knocked him over while reversing.

ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing saidthe incidents were attended to both atpeople’s homes and in public areas such asparking lots. Paramedic Cameron Horner saidit was important to make sure children wereout of harm’s way at all times.

“Put them in the vehicle first or make suresomebody is holding them a safe distanceaway from a moving vehicle. If you are in anarea where you know there are children, make sure you look around before reversing.”

Red Cross Children’s Hospital’s ProfessorSebastian van As said they received at least10 cases annually of children being reversedover. Van As said the problem was worse nowwith people driving 4x4s.

“People look into their mirrors but can’tsee and the cars have big spaces underneathmaking it even harder. The bottom-line mainmessage is people who have small childrenmust never reverse if they do not know wheretheir children are,” he said.
