Media24 Local News KZN (publish- ers of the Fever, Echo, Greytown Gazette and Weekly titles) has partnered with the Office of the Premier to take the event - which started in Zululand as the Zululand Spelling Bee - throughout the province. GM of Media24 Local News KZN, Neil Tapinos, said publishing the words during Youth Month and to coincide with Youth Day is “fitting”. “We believe the KZN Premier Spelling Bee is a vehicle with which to educate and empower our local youth. In celebrating Youth Month, Media24 Local News KZN wanted to make a tangible contribution to the memory of this day.” Speaking at the first sitting of the provincial executive council in Pietermaritzburg last week, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said he had committed the provincial govern- ment to “moving with speed to ensure youth development programmes reach all corners of the province”. “KwaZulu-Natal Executive Council met officially for the first time during this term of office and reflected on the progress this government is making with regard to Youth Devel- opment. The people of KwaZulu- Natal, especially the youth, are its greatest resource,” said Mchunu. “It is critical that the talent and potential of our youth is fully developed and harnessed, so that we can guarantee the continuous socio- economic development of KwaZulu- Natal and South Africa as a whole. In doing so we will ensure that we deal decisively with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequal- ity,” said Mchunu. Marketing manager of Media24 Local News KZN, Sharmaine Smith, said pupils have over a month to learn the words, and those who have entered the competition will then gather at events in their regions to “spell their way to success” in August. The venues, dates and times for the regional competitions will be published in July. “While we want pupils to see this event as fun, we also encourage them to study diligently for the Spelling Bee. There are hundreds of thousands of rands in bursary, cash and book prizes up for grabs for the winning spellers, their schools and their teachers. Those who apply themselves will be able to make a very real difference to their education and futures if they make it to the finals,” she said. The competition is open to grade 10 and 11 pupils (one from each grade - ie two pupils from each school) from previously disadvantaged rural schools who speak English as a second language. All entrants must be under 18 years of age. Pupils must remember that only the words printed in ‘bold’ must be learned for spelling purposes. The definitions which accompany the words are to help pupils understand the words. For the ‘Bonus Words’ section, the words and definitions must be learned. The Bonus Words are print- ed on the last page of the feature and are clearly marked. Pupils are not able to enter themselves into the competition; they must be entered through their schools. All of the details are contained in the entry forms, which are printed in this week’s paper and will run for the next month. THE Democratic Alliance (DA)leadership categoricallystated in the Executive

Committee (Exco)meeting that theywill not take responsibility for therecent strikes which engulfed thenorthern suburbs around ReginaRoad three weeks ago.

Thiscomesafterareportfromthespeaker’s office which shows thattwowardcouncillorsinthenorthernareas were not holding adequatecommunity and committeemeetings in their wards.

The Regina Road protest tookplace in the wake of communitymembers demanding answers fromthe municipality regarding servicedelivery.

Council speakerBabuBaijoosaidthat in ward 28, of the possible 12ward committee meetings only fourtook place in 2013, and of thepossible four community meetings, only one was scheduled but wasabandoned.

“Ward 28 did not hold anycommunity meetings in 2013. If wedon’t communicate with thecommunityat large it createsunnec-essary problems. With regards towhat happened in ward 28, a lot offingers have been pointed and myoffice is going to investigate andcome back with a report. The issueof communitymeetings has becomea performance measurement, astheseareaudited,”explainedBaijoo.

Thewardcouncillors forward28and 31 are DA councillorsSoobramoney Govender andRooksana Ahmed respectively.

In his defence,Govender contested thespeaker’sreportandsaidthey heldmoremeetingsthan those appearing onthe report. He said thatthey were held up byofficials who did notwant to be part of themeetings.

“Only in October wewere given a directiveby the speaker that wecan hold meetingswithout the officials.Under thatdirective,we had the firstmeeting on 9November lastyear,” saidGovender.

Rooksana said she couldnotholdmeetings in her ward because ofelectricity outages and said that atone stage, security was neededbecause one meeting was ‘volatile’.However she said that on a dailybasis, shecommunicateswithall theresidents in her ward by using herphone, and residents visit her officeand communicate through SMSs.Ndlela said that only a chosen fewresidents are able to communicatewith Rooksana and not thecommunity at large.

Excomember councillor ThulaniXulu asked if both councillors werewilling to take responsibility for theRegina Road strike and for failing todisseminate information.

“The DA does not take responsi-bility for strikes caused by lack ofservice delivery by this council. Theminimum requirements were fourfor a communitymeeting and six for

meeting. The fact remains that theydid not have the requirednumber ofmeetings that theyweresupposedtohaveduring2013.There isnodoubtabout that,” said acting DA caucusleader Rodger Ashe.

Both Govender and Rooksanasaid that they were responsible fornot holding the required meetings, but said they were not responsiblefor the strike.

Rooksana also came under firewhen Exco member Eunice Majolasaid that Rooksana was caughtfilling in indigent forms in anotherward, instead of trying to holdmeetings in her own ward.

Baijoo said that council will nowprovide loudhail foranycommunitymeeting, whether it is asked for ornot.

Ndlela said that the review of themeetings was not a disciplinary noran interrogation measure.

IN order to contain fire disastersin high risk areas, the MsunduziMunicipality is planning to formand implement CommunityEmergency Response Teams(Cert) where certain individualswithin communities will receivebasic fire fighting training to dealwith fire emergencies.

The municipality is of thenotion that with individualswithin families and communitiesbeing the first responders in theevent of any fire emergencysituation, proper training isneeded to contain fires beforethe municipal fire departmentcan arrive.

Municipal manager, MxolisiNkosi, told the ExecutiveCommittee (Exco) thatvolunteers in communities whowill be part of Cert will undergobasic fire fighting training.

“The approach was that weform these communityemergency response teams byidentifying volunteers in zones, and train them in basic firefighting so that whenever thereare fires, before the municipalitycan respond, at least the peoplewithin the locality can assist incontaining those fire disasters,”said Nkosi.

A report from the municipality’s fire and rescue unit statesthat fires in informalsettlements, and other high riskareas, are out common, resultingin a high loss of life andproperty and affecting the mostvulnerable citizens.

Through the formation ofCert, various life saving skills canbe imparted to communitymembers in areas of fire fighting, first aid, safety and security andelectrical safety.

Each member who is trainedwill be issued with a 1,5kg fireextinguisher for use within thecommunity or risk area that theylive or to where they have beendeployed.

WINNINGLETTER<<LAST Thursday evening was bitingly cold.

Despite the cold, I had the warm pleasure ofexperiencing the commitment, courtesy and dedicationof the maintenance crews who do the hard stuff for theMsunduzi Municipality.

These men and women know what they have to do,and they get on with it, often under very difficult andunpleasant conditions. The municipality gets a toughgrilling in the press, and I have no compunction abouttaking a swipe at mismanagement, but these are theworkmen andwomenwho do the dirty work, and theirefforts must be recognised and appreciated.

It creates an opportunity for schools andteachers to pool their intellectual resources toteach their charges with added gusto andenthusiasm.

Teachers and schools are rewarded for the

This has been clearly seen at our previousZululand Spelling Bee, now in its fifth year, where teachers have put in countless hours oftheir own timeonweekends andafter hours totutor entrants.

MANY misconceptions about theflu virus and vaccine persist, de-spite thewidespread impact of thedisease and the benefit of vaccine.

Here an expert debunks six ofthose myths.1.Myth:Fluisnomorethananui-sance, much like the commoncold that cannot be prevented.

Fact: Flu is a severe and some-

flu every year because protec-tioniscarriedoverfrompreviousvaccinations.

Fact:Thefluvirusstrainscircu-lating in the community changefrom year to year. Because of this, anewvaccine ismadeeachyear toprotect against current strains.Vaccination is especially impor-tant if you have not had pandemicH1N1 (swine flu) yet.4. Myth: Only the elderly are atrisk for developing serious com-plications from the flu virus.

Fact: Influenza impacts peopleof all ages. Young children are athigher risk of severe infectionsthan older children and adults, and pandemic H1N1 typicallycauses more severe disease inpregnant patients during anystage of pregnancy.5.Myth: If Imissed the chance toget an influenza vaccination be-fore the winter season, I have towait for next year.

Fact:It’snevertoolatetobevac-cinated.Thebest timeisbeforethe

flu season, but vaccination duringthe flu season is still beneficial asthe virus circulates well into win-ter and early spring.6. Myth: Too many vaccinationsmayoverloadayoungchild’s im-mune system.

Fact: Everyone’s immune sys-tem can respond to a vast numberofproteins, suchas those includedin vaccines. It was estimated thatan infant’s immunesystemcanre-spond to 10 000 of these proteinsat one time.

Flu myths

times life-threaten-ing disease thatcauses250000-500000 deaths world-wide annually. Youcan avoid getting itbygoingforaflushotevery year.2.Myth:Youcangetflu from the inject-able vaccination.

Fact: The injecta-ble vaccine does notcontain any live vi-rus, so it is impossi-ble toget flu fromthevaccine. Minor sideeffects may occur insomepeople such asmild soreness, red-ness, swelling at theinjection site, head-ache or a low-gradefever. Most of theside effects are dueto the body’s im-mune response tothe vaccine.3. Myth: It is notnecessary to be im-munised against

14 foods that can cause gout>> Men are much more prone to develop gout than women, although postmenopausal women also run an increased risk

DIET plays a major role in the prevention and treatment of gout.

We tell you what dietary changesyou should make.Step 1: Understanding the link betweengout and food

Gout is a type of arthritis which usuallyaffects the joints of the big toe. Gout iscaused by deposits of urate crystals in thejoints. Urate is one of the breakdown products of compounds called purines. Peoplewho suffer from gout tend to either produce more urate than normal or to excreteless in the form of uric acid. Gout is usuallyaccompanied by raised blood urate levels.

Purines which are broken down to urateand uric acid originate from two sources, dietary protein and body synthesis.

Men are much more prone to developgout than women, although postmenopausal women also run an increased risk.

Factors that can precipitate a gout attack, include:•Overweight many patients who sufferfrom gout are overweight or obese.•Alcohol acute attacks of gout are oftenprecipitated by overindulgence in alcohol.•Dietary purines eating foods rich inpurines (meat, fish, fish roes) can cause anattack•Starvation or verylowenergy diets blood urate levels rise dramatically whenbody proteins are broken down due to starvation or very low energy intake•Kidney disease any disease, such aschronic renal failure, which prevents thekidneys from functioning properly andexcreting sufficient urate can cause gout•Other diseases diseases such as leukaemia or psoriasis can cause increasesin urate production•Drugs chemical compounds whichdecrease the excretion of urates, such asthe socalled thiazide diuretics, can cause

a gout attackIt is clear that your diet can play a role inyour attacks of gout.Step 2: Adopting new, healthy habitsYou can reduce your risk of another goutattack. Follow these guidelines:•Reduce weight.•Avoid alcohol: Cut down on alcohol intakedrastically. If necessary avoid all alcohol orrestrict drinking to less than two drinks aday. A harsh, but effective way of preventing gout.•Avoid gorging: Avoid rich, heavy mealswhich contain lots of fat and purines – i.e.the typical Christmas dinner is an excellentexample of a meal laden with fat andpurines.•Avoid purines: Avoid highpurine foodslike liver, kidneys, sweetbreads, sardines, anchovies, fish roes (eggs and caviar) andmeat extracts.•Drink water: Drink six or more glasses ofwater throughout the day and a glass atnight before going to bed to help thekidneys excrete urates.

•Go easy on caffeinated drinks: Don’t overdo tea and coffee drinking and switch torooibos tea if you find your joints startaching after a coffee/tea binge.Moderation and abstinence from alcohol those are the solutions to gout.Step 3: The basic principles of restrictingdietary purines•Water Drink at least six glasses per dayand make sure that you have one of theglasses before you go to sleep. It helpsgetting rid of uric acid.•Tofu (bean curd) Use as protein source.Research suggests that it increases uricacid secretion.•Macronutrients Diet should be relativelyhigh in carbohydrate (like bread, rice andpasta), moderate in protein (e.g. tofu) andlow in fat.•Alcohol An excess of alcohol should beavoided. Total abstinence and avoidanceof alcohol may be required in severe cases.•Body weight – Maintenance of, or gradualreduction to, ideal body weight could provehelpful. The absolute don’ts:
