Seated Mountain:

Help your patient find their sitz bones as if they were feet. Front

of the foot , arch of the foot and heel of the foot become front of

the sitz bones, middle of the sitz bones and back of sitz bones.

Have them rock on sitz bones until they find that point of stillness

and ease.

• Belly breath

Bring awareness to the lower belly. Notice the belly expand on inhale and return to original position on exhale. 3-5 times. This breath helps restore peace and reduce stress.

• Three part breath

Breathe in through the nose for a count of 3, feeling the breath rise from the lower belly to the ribs to the chest. Breathe out through the nose from the chest through the ribs to the lower belly for a count of 4. 3-5 times. This breath reaches expands lung capacity and energizes the body/mind.

• Cooling Breath

Sip air in through pursed mouth, as if sipping through a straw. Suspend the breath for 2 seconds. Exhale through the nostrils. 3-5 times. This breath calms the central nervous system when feeling frustrated and helps with overheating.

• Smith, Caroline. A randomised comparative trial of yoga and relaxation to reduce stress and anxiety. 2006. http://www.complementarytherapiesinmedicine.com/article/S0965-2299(06)00043-4/abstract

• Results

Following the 10 week intervention stress, anxiety and quality of life scores improved over time. Yoga was found to be as effective as relaxation in reducing stress, anxiety and improving health status on seven domains of the SF-36. Yoga was more effective than relaxation in improving mental health. At the end of the 6 week follow-up period there were no differences between groups in levels of stress, anxiety and on five domains of the SF-36. Vitality, social function and mental health scores on the SF-36 were higher in the relaxation group during the follow-up period.

• Conclusion

Yoga appears to provide a comparable improvement in stress, anxiety and health status compared to relaxation.
