ReviewingthepastyearislikeaCheshbonNefeshforourownmovement.Havewedonewell?Arewereachingourgoals?ArewegettingmoreJewstoconnect,toobserve,tostudyandtodo?IbelievethatthephenomenaofJewishcommunitiesaroundthe world is a true miracle.For 2,000 years, Jews havepracticedtheirJudaisminsomany different languages,cultures and costumes that itishardtobelievewearestillone people. So, what is thegluethatholdsustoourJudaism?IbelievethatkeepingourtraditionsalivethroughthespecialapproachofMasortiJudaismisthesecrettoJewishcontinuityandprosperitythroughouttheDiaspora.

InthisAnnualReview,wepresentyouwithatasteofwhathasbeendonebyindividuals,by communities, by national movements,by our regions and by our movement’sheadquarters. Our rabbis, cantors andlaypeoplearetheonesmakingithappen-theyarethesecretgluethatbindsallofthisintowhat’scalledamovement.

In May, 2009 representatives of Masorti kehillot from around Central and SouthAmericacametogetherinBogota,ColumbiaforthesecondregionalmeetingofMasorticommunitiesinCentral&SouthAmerica.InadditiontoBogota,participantscamefromCali(Colombia),Guadalajara(Mexico),Quito(Ecuador)andLima(Peru).Themeetingfocusedondilemmasoflay-leadership,managementmodelsandengagingvolunteersinthekehillot,aswellasissuesoftheregionalmovement.Ariel Blufstein,ExecutiveDirectorof

MasortiAMLATandYoel Schvartz,ContinentalMasortishaliach,ledsessions on strengthening theidentityandvisionoftheMasortimovementintheregion.Scholar-in-residence,Dr. Daniel Fainstein,Vice-Chancellor of the HebrewUniversity of Mexico, made apresentationabouttheoriginandevolutionofMasortiJudaism.

National Va’ad HaKehillot in ChileInAugust,2009theJewishcommunityofChileorganizedaCommunitiesoftheProvincesmeeting-anationalgatheringforrepresentativesofcommunalorganizationsfromallaroundChile.RepresentativescametoViñadelMarfrom Masorti kehillotin Santiago, Iquique,LaSerena,Valparaíso,Viña del Mar,Chillan, Los Angeles,Concepción, Temuco,Valdivia,OsornoandPuertoMontt.

Nofim Leadership Institute opens in ChileMaromandMasortiAMLAT(LatinAmerica)opened the Nofim Leadership Institute in Santiago, Chile in August 2009. Nofim is a community-wideleadershiptrainingprogramwhichwillfocusonteachingandtrainingfutureleaders of the Jewish community. Sessionswill be practical, theoretical and spiritual,givingparticipantsawideskill-setfortheircurrent and future leadership work in thecommunity.

Social Action Exchange – MAROM Budapest with Jerusalem and New York

MasortiMAROMmembersinBudapestareinvolvedina3cityexchangeprogramthataimstoeducateparticipantsinJewishvaluesofsocialjustice,whileatthesametimeinvolvingtheminpracticalvolunteerworkandculturaldialoguewithAmericanandIsraeliJewishstudents.ThistwoyearprogramstartedinBudapestinNovember2009,andincludesbi-weeklystudysessionsinBudapest,followedbyaweek-longvisittoJerusaleminJanuary2010,andNewYorkinJanuary2011.StudentsfromJerusalemandNewYorkwillvisitBudapestinMay2010.

Jewish tours of Portugal

MembersofKehillat Beit IsraelinLisbonhave participated in several tours ofJudiarias(Jewishneighborhoods)inLisbonand other nearby parts of Portugal tobecomemoreacquaintedwiththeirhistoryandheritageandinordertobeabletoleadgroupswhocometovisit.Theyhavevisited Jewish neighborhoods in Lisbon,and sites where historians believe thatsynagoguesexisteduntiltheendofthe15thCentury.TheyalsovisitedCabeçodeVide,avillageinSouthernPortugalwhichoncehadathrivingJewishcommunity,butsufferedbadlyduringthePortugueseInquisition.

Seven Masorti conversions in Ukraine

On August 9th a special sessionoftheMasortiEuropeBetDinwasconvenedinMunkatch,Ukrainetocomplete the conversion processof 7 candidates. Rabbis Reuven Resnick, Shlomo Zacharow andChaim Weiner (Director of theEuropean Masorti Bet Din) wereassisted by student rabbi andMasorti Olami Schorsch Fellow,

Reuven (Roma) Stamov.After studyinghardoverthepast2years,thecandidatesparticipatedinonefinal seminar, individual interviews, and immersion in themikvah,aclosingceremonyandcelebrations.

3rd Masorti wedding in Netherlands

Michael Zvi & Erna Poolman,activemembersoftheAlmere/Weespkehillah,marriedattheendofAugust2009,inthethirdMasortiweddingtohavetakenplaceintheNetherlands.

France & UK youth exchanges

Masorti kehillot in Parisand the London area areengagedinayouthexchangeprogramfor13to18yearolds.InNovember2009theBritish youngsters went toParis,withtheirnewFrenchfriends coming to the UKinDecember.Thisprogramwill further strengthenthe connections betweenMasorticommunitiesintheUKandFrance.

1 year volunteers to Germany from Ramah USA

In October 2009, Masorti Germany started its first cycle of a volunteer program in which graduates from Camp Ramah in the USA travel to Berlin, Germany for a year. The first

volunteers,Ruth Storch, Julie Edelman and Ben Sattin,willspendtheirtimeworkingintheMasortikindergarten,Jewishprimaryschool,Jewishhighschool,andattheMasortisynagogue inBerlin.Theywillalsoperiodicallytravel tosmallerMasorticommunitiesinotherpartsofthecountry.

November 2008Picture on left: Masorti kehillah Adat Shalom in Paris celebrated 20 years. Founded by only 12 families, the kehillah now boasts nearly 500 families amongst its members.Picture on right: Masorti Olami’s annual Evening of Tribute took place on November 2nd with a concert and reception at the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City. 2008 honorees were Dr. Ismar Schorsch, Chancellor Emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary; Rabbi David H. Lincoln, recently retired senior rabbi of Park Avenue Synagogue in New York; and Chazzan Alberto Mizrahi, cantor of Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago.

DecemberRecently formed, Masorti Spain held its first national activity on December 27th in Alicante. 75 members from Masorti kehillot in Madrid, Valencia and Alicante celebrated Chanukah together. Visiting JTS rabbinical student Juan Mejia helped lead celebrations.

January 2009Masorti European leadership seminar - 25 representatives from 9 different countries came together in Budapest. The program for the weekend included meeting MAROM activists at the Siraly café, and spending Shabbat with Dor Chadash, Hungary’s only Masorti kehillah.

FebruaryThe UK’s newest Masorti community, in Stoke Newington, London held their first shabbaton in early February. More than 40 people also attended a Megillah reading during Purim.

MarchOn March 29th, Kehilat Nitzan in Melbourne, Australia celebrated its 10th anniversary. The kehillah marked the occasion with a special celebration.

AprilYom HaShoah veHaGvu’rah was marked in Argentina by Masorti members who participated in the community-wide memorial service attended by over 1,300 people. MAROM coordinator, Ezequiel Herszage spoke about the role of youth in remembering the Shoah.

JuneEAJL (the European Academy for Jewish Liturgy) launched by the Masorti movement visited Spain for Shabbat at Congregation Bet El in Madrid, and a seminar at Kehillat Aviv in Valencia.

MayThe Great Synagogue, Stockholm joined Masorti Europe. Completed in 1870, it is the largest synagogue in Sweden, and has fully egalitarian services in a Masorti style.

JulyMore than 90 people came to Masorti kehillah Bet El, Madrid for the first cross-communal conference for both Orthodox and Masorti members of the city’s Jewish community.

AugustFor 5 days in early August, almost 80 people from all over the Ukraine attended the 5th Masorti Family Camp in Kiev.

SeptemberThe European Masorti Beit Din, directed by Rabbi Chaim Weiner, was convened for the first time in Paris, France.

OctoberMasorti Olami sponsored the visits of rabbis to Masorti communities throughout Europe for the High Holidays. Rabbi Carlos Tapiero lead services at Congregation Beth Shalom in Alicante, Spain. Other communities with visiting rabbis or cantors included Valencia, Spain; Aix en Provence, France; Almere, Netherlands; and Kiev, Ukraine.

November22 representatives from kehillot acrossEurope came together in Berlin for aweekendseminar.TheyspentShabbatattheOranienburgerstrasse Synagogue inBerlinleadbyRabbi Gesa Ederberg.Theseminarincludedsessionsonbattlinganti-Semitism,engaging volunteers and building futuregrowthwithinthekehillotandtheregion.

3rd annual Masorti AMLAT Conference tookplace in Lima, Peru. Masorti rabbis, lay-leaders and community activists from allover the regiongathered todebateanddiscussthechallengesofMasortiJudaisminthe21stcentury.

First Masorti Shaliach to Beijing, ChinaAda SchwarzapelandherhusbandElad,spentayearinBeijingChina,workingfortheJewishcommunity.This is the first time a Masorti shaliach hasbeensenttoKehillat Beijing. MAROM Long-Term programs in Israel

2009hasbeenaverysuccessfulyearforMAROMlong-term programs in Israel, with a total of 50participants arriving on programs from Argentina,Brazil,ChileandUruguayat the startof theyear.The program included leadership training at theMachon LeMadrichim, Jewish study, volunteering indevelopmenttownsandforsomeaHolocaustthemedtriptoPoland.MasortikehillahBet El inMexicowasextremelysuccessfulinrecruiting26participantsfortheLech LechaprogramwhichstartedinSeptember2009, and NOAM in the UK sent five people to its Drachimprogram.MAROMisexpectingmorethan75 participants from AMLAT on long-term Israelprogramsin2010.

This past year, over 3,000 children andteenagersattendedtheworld-widenetworkofRamahNOAMstylesummercamps inUruguay, Chile, Brazil, Argentina (Camp Elise system),UKandUkraine,manyofwhichweresupportedbyMasortiOlami.

InNOAM Argentina,over1,500youngpeopleandmorethan300volunteerstaffwereinvolvedin10differentsummercampsin December 2008 and January 2009.Allcampsfocusedoneducationalthemesmaking Masorti Judaism relevant to thelivesoftheyoungpeoplewhoattended.Inthenextsummersession(December2009andJanuary2010)NOAMwillcelebrateits 10th anniversary, and expects strongparticipationfromacross its16branchesinArgentina.

NOAM in the UKsentmorethan120youngpeopletoIsraelinsummer2009onaone-

monthprogramthatincludedmeetingIsraeliNOAM members. Close to 700 NOAMmembersaged11to15attendedthetwootherNOAMcampsthispastsummer,whichtookplaceinWalesandFrance.

TheCamp Ramah Yachadsummercampwasheldat theendofJuly inMunkatchinWesternUkraine.Thisyearalmost180childrenparticipatedinthe12daycamp,witha staff teamof12 localmadrichim(counselors) who grew up in the MasortiMovementinUkraine.

The Darkei NOAM leadership trainingprogramstartedits7thyearofactivitiesinArgentina,inearly2009.Thisyear,morethan150studentsfrom12differentMasortiKehillot will take part in the two yearprogramwhichtrainsmadrichim(counselors)fortheNOAMyouthmovement.

The Masorti Jewishcommunity of Alicante, Spain celebrated Tu BiShvatby planting 6 trees in thePalmgardenpark,followedbyaTuBiShvat sederandmealinthesynagogue.
