CLERGY CORNER INTENTIONS & CONTACT

As I sit down to write, it is Monday, August 4, the feast day of St. John Vianney, the Curé d’Ars, the patron saint of parish priests.

On this feast day, I always spend some time reflecting on the gift of priesthood. I’ve been ordained a priest for 36 years and I am so grateful for this marvelous vocation with which God has blessed me. In these years I’ve experienced great joys. As with any vocation, I’ve also had my difficulties and struggles, but those difficulties pale in comparison to the blessings and joys

Priests have the opportunity to share with their people some of the most awe-inspiring yet challenging moments – from the joys of celebrating baptisms and weddings, to witnessing the powerful work of the Spirit in the Sacrament of Penance, to praying with the sick, to gathering with family members at a deathbed. In these profound moments, I often think of Moses at the burning bush, when God tells him to take off his sandals because he was standing on “holy ground” (Exodus 3:4-5). As a priest, I regularly am blessed to “stand on holy ground” in those sacred and intimate moments in life, as well as in my daily celebration of the sacred Eucharist.

I invite you to make prayer for vocations to the priesthood and religious life a regular part of your spiritual discipline. We need many more good and holy priests and religious! Beyond prayer, please invite and encourage young men and women in the parish, in your families and neighborhoods, to consider this beautiful and fulfilling vocation. When you see someone who has the kind of qualities you’d love to have in your future parish priests or sisters, tell them that. Ask if he or she has considered the possibility. You might just be the instrument of the Lord himself in planting the seed of a vocation.

In our list of parish ministries, you will note that Father Bao is serving as our Parish Vocation Director. He will be forming a Parish Vocation Committee and on occasion use this Clergy Corner to reflect on vocations.

Jesus, our Great High Priest, raise up laborers for the harvest! Mary, Queen of Priests, you said “yes” to your vocation, inspire young men and women with the same generosity of spirit! St. John Vianney, pray for us!

Father Craig

Dear Parishioners, This is another of a series of regular “financial snapshots” related to our parish’s income and expenses. The Lord is generous to us; please be generous in supporting the mission and programs of our parish family. Our average weekly expenses are $30,000.For the weekend of August 2-3, our collection was: $20,928.25. Did you know that last year our parish family had to pay $99,410.74 for fire and liability insurance to protect parishioners and our parish property? With our current weekly collections averaging less than $20,000, it takes us five weeks to cover these two insurance bills. This is one of the many expenses that our weekly donations help defray. Thank you.

¡VE CON GOZO! GO OUT WITH JOY!The San Fernando Regional

Religious Education CongressSaturday, September 20, 2014

The primary purpose of this regional congress is to support the formation of adults throughout our region, especially our Religious Education catechists, Catholic school catechists, and parish ministers. This past year, the San Fernando Regional Congress served over 1000 participants onsite at Bishop Alemany High School and 400 online through our live stream. Inviting dedicated presenters who provide workshops in catechesis, theology, scripture, spirituality and other related fields accomplishes this goal. Our theme challenges us to focus the workshops on our response to the Sunday readings as they pertain to our lives. This year’s theme is: ¡VE CON GOZO! SCHOOL STUDENTNON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color or national and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, sex or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs; although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single sex schools. While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student’s emotional, academic and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student’s needs.

WEEKDAY MASS REMINDER – SCHOOL STARTS WEDNESDAY

Classes will begin on August 13th for all OLPH students. To ensure student safety, the gates to the parking lot will be closed and locked at 8:00 a.m. each weekday. If you attend the 7:00 a.m. Mass, the gates will still be open when Mass finishes. If your vehicle is parked inside of the gates and they are closed, there is a button near the hand gate behind the east corner of the church (nearest to the school) which rings in the school office to let us know that you need the gate opened. Once inside the gated area, you can drive your vehicle out of the large gate located on the east side between the school building and the church. Be careful as the gates open in towards your car.We ask that no one park inside of the gated area after 8:00 a.m. each morning. Please make sure your car is removed from the lot after Mass as the children use the blacktop area for PE and recess. If you plan on remaining in the church after Mass, please use one of the other marked parking areas. Please do not park in an area that is not marked and intended for that purpose as it impedes the traffic flow and creates an unsafe environment for everyone.

STEWARDSHIP, COMMUNITY & EVANGELIZATION

PAGE FIVE Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 10, 2014

DID YOU KNOW?SUMMERTIME, SAFE TIME

All teachers, staff and volunteers in the Archdiocese must undergo fingerprinting and criminal background checks. Archdiocesan guidelines and abuse prevention training programs currently in use in the Archdiocese emphasize the importance of parents knowing who has access to their children at school and other church-sponsored activities. Summertime is here, and parents should remain vigilant regarding who is granted access to their children. Make sure camp counselors have undergone criminal background checks. And, make sure you know the camp’s “daily routine.” In particular, make sure that no camp activity results in a child being left alone with one adult. All activities should be supervised by more than one adult, and the camp should be open to unannounced drop-in visits from parents. For more information email: Dn. Jaime Abrera, Fingerprint Department, [email protected]

Gracias.
