Dear Entering Freshman,
You will begin your high school mathematics education with Algebra 1. Whether
you've taken Algebra before or not, MATES Algebra 1 will be a challenging course in
which you will develop your ability to create mathematical models, and strengthen your
problem solving skills. The prerequisite knowledge for this course includes all the
mathematics that you have learned up to, and including Pre-Algebra.
This packet is designed to refresh your memory regarding some important Pre-Algebra
skills. Most of the material should already be familiar to you. It consists of a set of 100
questions in multiple-choice format. As you solve each problem, be sure to show your
supporting work! The quality of your supporting work will be assessed, along with the
correctness of your answers.
If you need additional scrap paper, please number each question on the paper, and be
sure to include your name. The scrap paper should be completed in pencil, and turned in
with your packet on the first day of school.
You may use a calculator as needed. If a calculator is used, your supporting work should
indicate what the calculator inputs and outputs were. As you travel through your
mathematical journey at MATES, the use of a calculator might be restricted on some
assessments. Mental math skills are very valuable, and you should always consider the
reasonableness of a result before writing down your final answer.
The following websites are recommended resources, should you discover that you need
some extra help with a particular topic:

In completing your packet, please write your final answers in the spaces provided.
This assignment will count as your first Algebra 1 grade at MATES. It represents an
opportunity to make a great first impression!
Enjoy your summer - we look forward to seeing you in September!
Sincerely,
MATES Mathematics Department
