Farewell to Janice and Charlie LovettAfter many years of enthusiastic work in theatre productions at Summit, the Lovetts will embark on a book tour to promote Charlie’s new novel, The Bookman’s Tale, to be published by Viking Press this summer. Charlie joined the Summit staff as Writer-in-Residence in 2002. His interest in writing and creativity was sparked while a student at Summit. His many contributions to the performing arts in our school started as an actor in 1st grade. Janet’s “love affair with the theatre” began when her mother took her to her first audition for a production of Oklahoma! When their children attended Summit, the Lovetts volunteered in the theatre department, and Janice soon started directing plays before becoming Summit’s third grade Theatre Arts specialist in 2001.

During their tenure at Summit, the husband-and-wife team has contributed many plays written by Charlie and directed by Janice. Her ability to transform a cast of some 60 third graders into a first-rate production is uncanny. According to Janice, the challenges include “scheduling, appropriate behavior, and getting kids to move out of their comfort level to give a

great performance.” Her work is facilitated by Charlie’s philosophy as a playwright for younger actors: each part should contribute to the story, and all parts should be roughly equivalent in size and importance. For older students, Charlie’s plays include “opportunities for a variety of acting styles and abilities, including physical comedy, accents, strong character traits, etc.” In each case, Charlie believes that “humor enhances the enjoyment of both cast and audience.”

Charlie’s original plays have been published in several languages and performed around the world. Charlie is also the author of Onward and Upward: A 75th Anniversary History of Summit School, several novels, and other works. He is currently finishing his final third grade play, after which he plans to work on his follow-up novel and on a

book, with Janice, on how to produce plays at the elementary level, while promoting The Bookman’s Tale from Finland to Russia to Brazil. “After more than ten years of writing and publishing plays for children, it’s exciting to begin a new phase of my creative career. I’m sure I will visit Summit frequently and look forward to seeing what the future holds for all the Summit family.”

We wish Janice and Charlie all the best in this new phase of their life!

School PicturesThe 2012-2013 school pictures raised $3,705.54!

Thanks to all the parents and the committee chairs Anna Singer and Beth Probst for all of your hard work.

Volunteer Spotlight: Joyce CarsonIf your son or daughter has ever been in a performance at Summit or donned clothes from the past for an experiential look at history, chances are that pieces of their outfit came from our school’s

expansive Costume Room. At the helm is Joyce Carson, mother of Benjamin (graduated in 2010), Joshua and Nathaniel (5th grade).

During the summer of 2010, Loma Hopkins and Karen Rudolph worked tirelessly to move the costume room from its small location across from the theatre to the wonderful space hidden on the third floor of the library. When she first saw the new space, Joyce was in awe, “like a kid in an organic, low sugar candy store! The space is easy to move around, and we have dressing rooms as well.”

Joyce enjoys working with teachers, staff and parents, and says that volunteering in the costume room “creates a wonderful opportunity to work with other parents and the kids throughout the

school.” In addition to plays for 3rd, 6th, 8th and 9th graders, the costume room supports curriculum-based activities such as Pioneer Day (3rd), Living Biographies (4th), Immigration Project (5th), Greek study and Medieval Feast (7th grade). Joyce quips, “working with the costume room is like being at Disney World without the rides!”

With all these activities around the school year, there is no shortage of work. Volunteers are always welcome (grandparents too!), especially if they can sew. Some items are in short supply, such as costumes for the lower school grades, especially 18th, 19th and early 20th century clothes in children’s sizes for Living Biographies and the Immigration Project, and some common accessories (black neckties and bow ties come to mind).

If you would like to volunteer or have items to donate, please contact Joyce Carson at [email protected] or at (336) 765-5807.
