At New World Dairy, Inc., St. David’s,

Newfoundland, Jan Sas reports

SCC was lowered by 100,000 in his

milking herd of close to 1000 cows

after they shifted their priorities from

using Udder Comfort™ occasionally

and reactively on hard quarters to

using Udder Comfort routinely and

proactively on all cattle pre- and

post-calving.

“Reduced swelling in the mammary

system at an increased time interval

leads to increased production for

the complete lactation based on

improved peak milk,” Jan Sas

explains. “This is the biggest benefi t

of helping these animals get off to

such a good start.

“In addition to the 75% decrease in

rate of new infections alongside

lower SCC, we bank on an 8% milk

increase on our 2-year-olds due

to improved peak milk yield. On a

20,000-lb heifer, we’re looking at

1500 to 1600 pounds more milk

yield per lactation...

“All, simply by doing the pre- and post-

fresh protocol we developed (above).

“Cost varies a bit, but one 500-ml

bottle of Udder Comfort spray covers

pre- and post-calving use on 4 head.

“Even at $10 per animal, we fi gure a

15-to-1 return on investment (ROI)

when using the average California

milk price to convert the gains we

see with our protocol on our dairy.”

Quality Udders Make Quality Milk

For external application to the udder only after milking, as an essential component of udder management. Always wash and dry teats thoroughly before milking.

“Even at $10 per animal, we fi gure a 15-to-1 ROI...”— Jan Sas

JAN SAS, NEW WORLD DAIRY, INC. — 1000 cowsSt. David’s, Newfoundland, CanadaRHA 25,600 lbs (3x) 3.8 f 3.24 p; SCC 175,000

Jan Sas details his protocol like this:

FIRST CALF HEIFERS:

“Spray daily with 3 to 4 evenly-distributed

vertical sprays on every quarter, starting

3 to 4 days pre-calving; continue 2x/day

for 3 days post-calving.”

MULTI-LACTATION COWS:

“Spray daily with 3 to 4 evenly-distributed

vertical sprays on every quarter, starting

5 to 6 days pre-calving; continue 2x/day

for 5 days post-calving.”

THE COMPLETE MICROBIAL FORMULA

1) Optimizes the breakdown and utilization of both Fiber and Starch.

2) Re-populates the natural rumen microbial flora daily.

3) Contains unique strains and ratios of both fiber and starch digesting bacteria; thus enabling the producer to feed diets that their inventory allows.

Maximizing feed efficiency is the primary goal of each dairy operation. Golden Link Microbials enables the nutritionist to formulate a ration utilizing the available feed inventory, while optimizing milk production and herd health.

Purebred Holstein breeders that I have had my eye on the past 30 years in the state ofMinnesota with great cattle are: Olmar Farms, Sleepy Eye; Mahoney Holsteins, Cannon

Falls; Sapa Ska Holsteins, Lake City; Albrecht Holsteins, Watertown, from which I had areally great cow that went on to be 4E-93 at 12 years of age with over 200,000 8303Flifetime. She also had a 2E-92 dtr. And then Apple Acres Holsteins, Hastings, from which Ihad a cow that was VG-88 at the time and went on to be 3E-93 and 170,000 7000F life-time and had two VG dtrs in other herds.

I also had purebred Holstein cattle from herds in Canada the past 30 years: Walnut-KnollHolsteins, Rowntree Holsteins, Vanderpost Holsteins, Grumblehill Holsteins, all fromOntario; then Comestar Holsteins, Quebec; and Roswitha Holsteins, Bulrush Holsteins,Rainyridge Holsteins, and Benner Holsteins in Manitoba; plus RF Holsteins inSaskatchewan. A total of 13 cows, all of which were 5 years old or older when they cameto Roughway from these farms. All went EX but one, and she went VG-88. Two went EX-90, two EX-91, three EX-92, three EX-93, two EX-94. I’ve had people tell me that Ishould flush some of my cows but I never did, and I feel good that I didn’t.

There was an error in my last ad in the Cattle Connection byjust one small word, but yet a big word that was meant for thatparagraph. It said EX animals and was supposed to say ET animals. If you don’t have the last Connection, the paragraph should haveread like this: “I just wonder how many ET animals there are in thecountry today. Most all consignment sales today have 25 percent to50 percent in them, and in a lot of consignment sales, consignorsput a minimum bid on embryos to be sold. If that is OK, well, liveanimals should be able to have a minimum bid also! Some do, andno one knows it, behind closed doors, etc, or they bring a set priceno matter what??”

P.S. When I write in the Cattle Connection, I do not go into a lot ofdetails of what I say, but I try to get the point across in a small way.If China would lend or give me some money like they do our gov-ernment, I would go into more details with many different topics.

More of Past and PresentMILK

In the last month I have talked with some beefbreeders about what has been taking place inthe purebred Holstein industry the last 10-12years and some have said they should take 8or 10 of their beef cows and breed them topurebred Holstein bulls and start a registereddairy herd and work up to a 99% registeredHolstein herd. And then I have talked withthree other dairy cow breeders from otherdairy breeds and they have said the samething. If I knew that this was going to take place60 years ago when I started up in the pure-bred Holstein life, I would have told theNational Holstein Association where to put it,to say the least.

And now Brattleboro is going to be along theMississippi River the last of June 2014. It is agood thing that it is at the end of June, becausethe Mississippi River shouldn’t have quite asmuch pollution from the runoff from the win-ter snow melt and spring rain, and from all thefarm chemicals, plus all the town runoff. Thereis a limit in more ways than one. The gulf canhandle just so much. Hopefully Brattleborodoesn’t add too much to the already pollutedMississippi River. That is sad to say, but it is sotrue in many ways today.

Many people don’t know what is meant by“there is a limit.” Take a look at the man- andwoman-made laws like the speed limit on

roads. It will say 55 miles per hour, but manypeople go 60-75 miles per hour. Like I havesaid before, there is man- and woman-madetechnology and science, but a lot of that hasled into bad technology and science. There is alimit. And then there is God’s law, and there isno limit there.

About two years ago, when it comes to theNational Holstein Association, there are stillthree or four staff or employees that shouldbe now let go. Sad to say, but I and some otherHolstein breeders at that time had been calledliars and that everything was a lie that tookplace at our farms. I and some other farmersacross the country should have had a securitycamera in the barn, and a tape recorder going,

and a recorder on the phone also later onwith some other staff members. To say theleast, we really had to keep our composureand patience while they were here. All theywould have had to do at least was apologize insome matter later, it would have helped a little, but it did not happen! It is a very, verypoor way of doing business of any kind!

Back about 35 years ago there was a manemployed by Holstein who was let go onsomewhat the same matter. He was at myplace in Norwalk, IA one time, and that wasone time too many for me. But back then,Holstein was a purebred association and Ithink there were more morals and standardsat that time. Maybe!

Here are some bulls of the past 10 years and the present thatare 100% purebred and that we’ll see deep in pedigrees andcow families down the road: Aspen, Lightning, Crimson,Braxton, Windjammer, Dempsey, Fever, Guthrie, Destry,Lauthority, Atwood, Future, Goldwyn, Laurin, Dundee, Bolton,Jasper, Advent-Red, Stormatic, Stanley Cup, Debonair-Red.

I have received the Hoards Dairyman magazine for the last 7months. I do not know why. I did not order it. I used to about20 years ago. Whatever. Anyway, I judged the 5 dairy breedsthey had in it this time each month, Jersey, Ayrshire, Guernsey,Holstein, and Brown Swiss. I got all the classes right except theHolstein class, and I did not get any of the 4 animals right inthat class. Maybe I need to change breeds or get glasses!

When it comes to showing dairy cattle of all breeds and allages over the years, I have always liked to see the group classesat the end of the single classes, from state to national level. Most of those classes have to do with breed breeders aloneand animals they have bred by their choice of bulls, likeProduce of Dam and Dam & Offspring and maybe the Best 3Females and Premier Breeder. It is nice to see the Best Bred &Owned in each class. I know everyone has to start somewherefrom maybe a calf on up. What kind of gets me the last tenyears is a lot of people leave when it comes time for groupclasses. They are in some ways more important than the singleclasses. Whatever.

The only Holstein activities that I have been to in the past yearhave been the Iowa State Fair, Midwest National Spring Show, which I have been to the past 3 years, the WisconsinChampionship Show, and the World Dairy Expo, which I havemissed only four times in the past 45 years. I would like to goto the Central Plains Holstein Show, maybe this year in June.

I gave up my Iowa State Holstein membership this year. I amvery tired of being a member of our state when members withmore than 200 cows have to pay just $200, and anyone withunder 200 cows has to pay $1 per cow. It is so wrong in everyway, and there are other states that have somewhat the samepolicy. Someday people might wake up? Happy New Year.

“This occasion is not alone in the administration of the mostsacred oath which can be assumed by an American citizen. It is adedication and consecraton under God to the highest office inservice of our people. I assume this trust in the humility of ourpeople. I assume this trust in the humility of knowlege that onlythrough the guidance of the Almighty Providence can I hope todischarge its ever-increasing burdens.” Herbert Hoover

“Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimo-ny in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, anddo not show favoritism to a poor man in his lawsuit. Blessed arethey whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law ofthe Lord. Blessed are they who keep His statutes and seek Himwith all their heart. A truthful witness saves lives, but a false wit-ness is deceitful.” Proverbs 14:25

“Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothinginto the world, and we can take nothing out of it. A truthful witness gives honest testimony. God gives us Biblical principles, not so that we can arrange our lives according to our taste, but sothat we can know how God wants us to live.”
