Bookmarks Seven club members prepared "MAKE & TAKE" origami bookmark packets for chil-dren to construct at the WD Library Book Festival in May. The girls were busy cut-ting out animal faces and embellishments for over one hundred corner page book-marks. Children attending the fair will construct and keep their bookmark. Many thanks to everyone who donated materi-als and/or volunteered to help make these cute bookmarks. The art department ap-preciates your help and interest in this service project for our West Deptford community.

♦ Linda and Bill Jones are proud of grand-son Tyler Cobb’s football skills and being chosen by the South Jersey Football Coaches Association to play in the Adam Taliaferro All-Star Football Classic game in June at Rowan University. Teammates are chosen from all different high schools throughout South Jersey. ♦ Great news! The Taylor twins, grandsons of Chris & Charlie, are home from the hospital. They will need medicine twice daily and weekly blood tests, but they are thriving! Please keep these tiny boys, KC and Cal, and parents Matt and Theresa in your thoughts and prayers.

THANKS to all the volunteers who put together bookmark kits for children to assemble at the WD Library Book Festival. Cynthia, Tannis, Isabella, Elaine, Debbie, and Dorothy helped Linda J.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Linda J. for not only leading art projects but also for taking many of the photos in this newsle er!

WOMEN’S HISTORY Joan Baur Mother’s Day Many of our club members celebrate Mother’s Day as Mothers, Grandmothers, or Daughters. In the United States Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Austral-ia, and Belgium also celebrate Mother’s Day on this day. During World War II American servicemen brought our cus-tom of Mother’s Day to Great Britain. Now Mother’s Day/Mothering Sunday is celebrated there on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The earliest American Mother’s Day or Mother’s Work Day began in 1858 in West Virginia. Ann Reeves Jarvis wanted to work to improve sanitary conditions in her town. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe be-gan promoting the idea of a “Mother’s Day for Peace” to be a celebrated on June 2, honoring peace, motherhood and womanhood. This idea faded out when Julia became more involved with working for peace and women’s rights in other ways. Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeve

Jarvis, worked on establishing an of icial Mother’s Day. Anna started by writing letters to politicians, clergy members, business leaders, women’s clubs and any-one else she thought might have some in luence. The U.S. Congress passed a Joint Resolution in 1914, and President Woodrow Wilson signed it, establishing Mother’s Day, which emphasized wom-en’s role in the family. Through the years the con-cept of giving lowers at Mother’s Day has grown. Are you giv-ing lowers to someone on Mother’s Day? Don’t forget the club’s Spring Flower Sale!!

SOCIAL/ENTERTAINMENT Cynthia Holmes-Butler, April Maska Several club members braved the wind, cold and rain to see Beauty and the Beast ballet at the Scottish Rite Auditori-um in Collingswood on April 15. Coming up on May 6, 22 members have signed up for the Colonial Tea at the Whiteall House at Red Bank Battle ield. There are no more openings. We will be attending the 3 p.m. seating. Please be there by 2:45 p.m. We can watch them cooking and visit the museum before the tea! It should be a great time! A luncheon will be held in June at Scot-land Run again this year. We are looking at possibly Tuesday, June 19. The date will be set soon. ABOVE & RIGHT: Beauty and the Beast, with lunch at the Metro. BELOW RIGHT: Two First Place photos by Cynthia. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS Louise Avery & Linda Marple Enough is Enough! GFWC joined national women’s organiza-tions gathered on Capitol Hill for the Enough Is Enough Summit & Congres-sional Brie ing during Sexual Assault Awareness Month to address sexual har-assment and assault in the workplace (Title 7) and schools (Title 9). Panelists included representatives from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Women’s Law Center, National Organization for Wom-en, American Association of University Women, End Rape on Campus, Legal Mo-mentum, Feminist Majority, National Do-mestic Workers Alliance, ERA Coalition, National Council of Jewish Women, Na-tional Congress of Black Women, and the National Farmworker Women’s Alliance. In preparation for re-authorization of the Vio-lence Against Women Act (VAWA), the focus of this summit was to educate law-makers about the necessity to extend sexual harassment laws to all women, especial-ly domestic workers and farm workers, so that every woman is protected—no loopholes and no exclusions.
