The next training will be held at the station at 9am on 6 May. During April, the brigade was relativity busy supporting neigh-bouring brigades attend small grass fires, mainly due to crop burns getting out of control from farmers. Still be vigilant if burning off; grass-lands are relatively dry and weather conditions can change quickly. Some members assisted in fire control and blacking out in the state’s south-east mainly around the Camperdown/Cobden complex fires. The fire is still burning in ‘peat’ in the Cobden area and will be for some time. This fire is a timely reminder that a fire can start any time, anywhere and it was very lucky there was no loss of life. Permits are being issued by City of

Greater Geelong and Golden Plains Shire. You must obtain a permit (free of charge) before you can commence any burning. If you see a grass fire, check first - i.e. have a good look around before ringing 000; it may just be a controlled burn off. In saying that, keep an eye out for other suspicious behaviour and if in doubt report immediately. FIRE RESTRICTIONS ARE STILL IN PLACE. Do not breach permit conditions - we are instructed to report all infringements to the CFA and Victoria Police. You will be charged if found to be outside the permits requirements or if you don’t have a permit.

1st Anakie Scout Group What a fabulous term 2 we are looking forward to! Not only will the scouts and cubs be going on a hike ( which they will be planning themselves), they will also be visiting the Geelong Peace memorial and participating in the ANZAC Day March at Meredith, as they have done in past years. We are also welcome Anabel as a parent helper. C’mon board! This will also be Remote Red Wolf’s last Scout Group Corner. She lives in Bendigo now and apart from ‘Bendigonian’ activities taking her mind away from Anakie goings on, it is difficult to keep her mind on dates and times etc. After enjoying this promotional and thoroughly enjoyable writing in the Anakie Advocate over the past years, it is time to hang up her ‘pen’. Adieu friends

Congratulations

Sally (Forman) and Daniel Larkins, on the arrival of a son, William, a brother for Michelle.

Erin Butcher and Jack Woodyard on the birth of your first child, a daughter, Lylah.

Jacqui (Gibbs), Scott and big sister, Harriet Forman on the arrival of a son and brother, William.

Health News & More... Influenza: attacks the lungs, nose and throat. Young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with chronic disease or weak immune systems are at high risk. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, congestion, cough, runny nose, headaches and fatigue. The flu is treated primarily with rest and fluid to let the body fight the infection on its own. Pain relievers like Paracetamol may help with symptoms. An annual vaccine can help prevent the flu and limit its complications. The vaccine consists of a dead virus which will not give you the flu. If you happen to get the flu or a head cold after receiving the vaccine this is just an unfortunate co-incidence and not related to the vaccine. A bout of the flu typically lasts one to two weeks, with severe symptoms subsiding in two to three days. However, weakness, fatigue, dry cough, and a reduced ability to exercise can linger for three to seven days. Worldwide the influenza virus continues to kill significant numbers of people every year. Furthermore, the time lost in the workplace has a serious impact on the economy. The influenza vaccine is given annually as the virus mutates regularly so the vaccine must be changed accordingly. The peak flu season in Australia is June, July August and September so the ideal time to have the vaccine for optimum coverage is the start of May. So, do yourself a favour, get a flu injection and if you are over 65 or have a chronic condition it’s free! e: [email protected] Ph: 0425 731 295 Be well and create your happiness..!!

After a staggering innings, with what must surely be an Anakie record, Lyn Findlay has retired from her position as Business Manager at Anakie Primary School.    Lyn, husband John and children, Greg, Mike and Ashleigh, moved to Anakie in January 1988. She took a position as school Clerical Assistant in April 1989 and worked between three schools: Anakie and Lovely Banks, for two days each, and Balliang for one day weekly. Her tasks included preparing the newsletter, writing cheques and managing correspondence. After a short break from 1994 to 1998, she returned to Anakie Primary School.     Over the years, and after the introduction of Schools of the Future, the role changed dramatically, with responsibility shifting from government to individual schools. There is now far more accountability, much of which is managed by the Business Manager.    Lyn has seen at least seven principals come and go at Anakie. She has gathered a vast knowledge of the not only the school, but of the families and children, some of whom now have their own children. Student numbers peaked at 90 during her time and dropped to as low as 30 some years ago.     The decision to retire came quite suddenly with a thought that there is more to life than work. Having been “cruising along”, the time just seemed right. Ashleigh has two small children and Lyn is spending some precious time with them and other family members. As Ashleigh is a relief teacher, it is great to have mum only too happy to look after the children. Lyn and John have short‐term holidays within Australia on the agenda, but currently Lyn has found herself busier than ever.    Lyn wants to stress how she absolutely loved her years at Anakie Primary School. She built a close bond with the pupils and made lifelong friendships with many teachers and parents. She is sure her successor will be as happy as she was working at the school. It is hard to imagine, however, that the next person will be there as long as Lyn was!
