This is the first combined SidePipe that I can remember, and it is at times like these that you have a chance to stop and reflect on all the various efforts required to keep our chapter running. Special thanks to Bob for all that he does, and, in car terms we are back to hitting on all eight cylinders. While the Corvette Assembly Plant tours will resume in January, 2019, (suspended since June, 2017) there are always new events at the National Corvette Museum. Currently the NCM has a special feature themed “Chevrolet Racing: Louis to Le Mans.” The theme is the history of Chevrolet racing as told from the early days of Louis Chevrolet as a racing driver for Buick, through the AMA ban on racing, Chevrolet Racing’s involvement in NASCAR, and the Le Mans winning Corvettes. Significant stories are told through the display of various cars and artifacts, from engines, including one from a C5-R and a fuel injection cutaway, to race suits, trophies from various races and more. Chevrolet was born out of the early days of Buick racing with Louis Chevrolet driving, The exhibit starts with Corvette Racing’s success and backed it up to the roots of Buick and what Louis Chevrolet was doing driving for them. Highlights of the exhibit include a 1909 Buick Model 16 Indy Racecar, 1910 Buick Bug, 1915 Cornelian, 1957 Chevrolet “Black Widow” NASCAR, (an awesome car, but the story on top of that is that the “Black Widows” were the cars that led to the ban on fuel injection in NASCAR), 1983 Monte Carlo SS”‘Pepsi Challenger’ NASCAR, 1989 ZR1 24- Hour World Record Corvette, 1997 Chevrolet C5.R Homologation car, 1997 Monte Carlo chrome- wrapped NASCAR, C6.R GT1 Test Car and 2010 Chevrolet Cruze WTCC Race Car. The ’Chevrolet Racing: Louis to Le Mans’ exhibit runs through January 4, 2019, in the National Corvette Museum’s Exhibit Hall. The Oklahoma Chapter Judging Meet in Edmond on Saturday, August 18 was a great success. Not only did we flight judge a 1969 Silver Convertible and a 1970 Bronze Coupe, we also had the opportunity to judge at a new location, (very nice facility) and network with our NCRS friends from the Oklahoma City Area and Wichita. Thanks to Russ and Gene for arranging this event, to all those who participated, and to Mike for the great pictures on our web-site. Special thanks to Michael and Jill Young for hosting this year’s Ice Cream Social. The event was a huge success at a new location as we had great fellowship, car talk, (and a little football talk), delicious food and desserts, as Mike and Karen excelled once again with the Hasty Bake. After our October Breakfast Meeting we will venture over for an Auburn, Cord & Duesenberg Tour. These cars are known for their luxury and high performance, and this will prove to be an educational tour. These cars have a colorful history, such as which car did Al Capone prefer, which was the original design for the “Batmobile,” and which had a 4.6L straight eight with a supercharger option to boost up to 150 HP, (answers at breakfast)? Plan on attending this event as it will expand your automobile knowledge as well as give you the chance to view some remarkable cars. The parade is produced by the Downtown CarlisleAssociation in partnership with Carlisle Events andsponsored by the Navy Federal Credit Union. Theparade is a regular feature of Corvettes at Carlisle, the largest Corvette event in the world\, held eachyear at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. This year’s multi-day event took place, friday,Au

By Thursday 466 cars wereregistered for the parade, according to the DCA’swebsite, keeping in linewith recent years’ figures.

“This is a great number andshows how interested thesecar enthusiasts are indowntown Carlisle andhaving a great time in ourtown,” said Glenn White, executive director of theDCA. “(Downtown)restaurants have a greatnight, some pulling in awhole weekend’s revenuein four hours.”

Hordes of spectators filledthe streets of downtownCarlisle for the parade. Some eagerly steppedforward with cameras, while others simply cranedtheir necks for a betterview as passing driverssmiled and waved to thecrowd. Passing cars borelicense plates from NewYork, New Jersey,Delaware, Ohio, Virginia,North Carolina and manyother states, as well asPennsylvania.

A few cars even carried Canadian flags, whileAmerican flags on vehicles were flown in abundance.

This was the first time that Dennis Byers and son,Michael Byers, both of Newville, came to watch theparade. Michael Byers said they were there, in part,to support St. John’s Preschool, located directlybehind where they were standing on North HanoverStreet in St. John’s Episcopal Church. Michael Byers’sons, Wyatt, 5, and Charlie, 3, played nearby in the

preschool’s fenced yard while the facility conducted asidewalk ice cream fundraiser.

“I think (my sons) are more excited about the icecream than the cars,” Michael Byers laughed.

Joe Purdom, of Carlisle, saidhe liked the cars as well asthe ice cream. He watchedthe parade from the townsquare with wife Carole, daughter, Jen, and son-in-law, Don, as well as hisyoung grandchildren, Wyattand Maggie. “I like watchingall of the Corvettes and I seea lot of friends here,” headded.

Parade participants also saidthey liked meeting up withfriends at each year’s event. This was the fifth year thatJames and Nancy JoMcCannon, of Bloomington,Minnesota, met up at theCarlisle parade with friendsfrom Albany, New York. Theyalso learned that their blue2016 Corvette was selectedas a 2017 Celebrity ChoiceAward Winner by TimDelaney just before theparade started, they said.

This was the third year that“Super Dave” Mueller of BelAir, Maryland, drove in theparade in the“beautiful town”of Carlisle.

His 2010 yellow Corvettecarries the license plate,“Yolo 1.” He first heard about

the show from his friend, Joe, from Fallston, Maryland,he said.

Leo Plante traveled nine hours from his home inAugusta, Maine, to drive his 2002 yellow Corvette. Hewas there for his “fifth or sixth” time, he said, withbrothers, Tony and Tom.

“We just love the cars, the Corvettes, the people herein Pennsylvania,” Plante said. “The event is wellorganized, and the people who set it up do awonderful job.”
