McHenry County Detachment #1009 Commandant’s Message

Welcome to 2018! When I think of the past from my assignment in Czechoslovakia, I cannot help but to appreciate what our past has done to inspire our future. This past year has been an amazing year. Past Commandant Daniel Boucek had done us well with his management of this amazing Detachment. You have honored me to serve as your Commandant for the next year, and I certainly thank you. Moving into the New Year brings us some great opportunities. I am intent on getting National to know who we are, gaining a high degree of admiration from our surrounding Detachments, and increasing our public relations within our own community. This year, I would like for the citizens of McHenry County to know who we are as veteran Marines who continue to serve our community.

I think we started out pretty darned well. Wayne Koster got us involved with the Chamber of Commerce in Crystal Lake, Tom Gillis managed to involve us at City Hall in Crystal Lake, where we led the council in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Northwest Herald did an article on the event in Woodstock, where we participated in helping the Clark family rejuvenate their home on the 23rd of December, just before Christmas. We have upcoming events such as the 2018 Department of Illinois Convention coming up in June, where we can ask for support from many of those with whom we shook hands with at the Chamber of Commerce event. And later this year, our Detachment will celebrate its 20th anniversary. I am wondering if we should host a Marine Corps Ball. Wouldn’t that be exciting? Let’s talk about it.

As we attend our parades, fundraising events, support functions, and meetings, let us be cognizant of exposing our Detachment to gain the most impact of educating our fellow citizens who we are.

I look forward to what is to come in the New Year. With a lot of help from a few proud Marines, Navy Corpsman, and Associate members we will accomplish our mission. Happy New Year. I hope 2018 will bring each and every one of you deserving members the best in prosperity, the finest life has to offer, and most of all, may you be blessed with love of family, country, and Corps. Let us march on to that familiar cadence we know so well. Semper Fi Marines!

Sincerely,

Rick Prescott

SENIOR VICE COMMANDANT CORNER

Wayne Koster

FROM SENIOR VICE Happy Friggin New Year! Ok I’ll be polite and say Happy New year, best wishes for good health, prosperity and Camaraderie. It’s time to rattle the sabers about our fund situation. The Detachment dispersed and will be dispersing funds toward our charities and organizations we support which means we need to replenish those funds so we can enjoy those pizza parties. This spring I want to work on shifts at the various stores we frequent for our flag sales. That means pulling all dayers or at least till late afternoon at these places. The cash potential is there to take and for that little time spent begging like poor church mice really pays off. Please put that on your new year’s resolution to help me help our league. Thanks, Wayne Koster, Senior Vice Commandant 1972 – 1976, Sgt. USMC -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy 2018 New Year!!! "Auld Lang syne"

This traditional Scottish song from 1778 translates to

"Times Gone By" or good old times, past times remembered with nostalgia.

It was derived from the ballad printed in 1771 by James

Watson. It's a call to remember long-standing friendships and asks in part:

"Should old acquaintances be forgot, and never thought

upon; Is thy sweet heart now grown so cold, that loving Breast

of thine; That thou cans't never once reflect old lang syne."

It ends with a toast...

"And there's a hand my trusty friend, and give me a hand o' thine,

And we'll take a right good-will draught for aild lang syne."

I remember an old Marine friend who fought at Iwo Jima

once telling me he was in our parades so that people would remember what he did and who he was. I also remember so many Marines telling me after a hospital

stay or home-bound how grateful they were that Marines remember each other and don't leave anyone

behind or forgotten.

As we begin a new year, let us cherish building new friendships while we remember our old friends and the

good old times with them. And most importantly, I pray we all find ways to

remember our Father in heaven

The following Marines and family members are in need of our prayers

James Caliendo, Mrs. Ken Hauser, Ruth Favre

The Communication Committee is still seeking volunteers to help with our newsletter. Do you have some ideas to make our newsletter better? Are you creative, articulate, and willing to seek out Detachment news? Maybe two members could team up to get the newsletter out to the membership.

Media/Social Media We could use some help with getting our Detachment activities publicized in local printed media, social media, as well as on local radio stations. Media contact is important to let members know what is going on in the Detachment, as well as getting the word out to potential new members. VA warns vets about fake Veterans Choice Program hotline

The Tribune-Review | Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, 1:09 p.m. The Department of Veterans Affairs is warning veterans to be careful when calling the toll-free number for the Veterans Choice Program. Another phone line that mirrors the hotline but uses 800 instead of 866 as the area code offers callers a $100 rebate if they provide a credit card number but actually is trying to steal their identities, the agency said. The Veterans Choice Program allows veterans enrolled in VA health care to use a community medical provider instead of going to a VA medical facility if they meet one of five criteria such as having to wait more than 30 days for an appointment at the VA facility. The hotline allows them to verify their eligibility and set up an appointment. The correct number is 866-606-8198. Veterans can also use the program's website instead of the hotline. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Toys For Tots For two weekends in a row, Lee Totman, McHenry County Toys for Tots (T4T) Coordinator and Daniel Boucek greeted patrons at the Kyuki-Do Martial Arts in Huntley and A.K.F. Martial Arts in Crystal Lake who brought gifts to be donated to the McHenry County T4T program. For Kyuki-Do Martial Arts in Huntley, this was their 10th year. Master Rick Bjorkquist, along with his staff would make breakfast for the families of their customers. Kids could work on crafts or decorate Christmas cookies, while sipping hot cocoa, while they waited to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas. Lee and Daniel had a great time visiting with the kids, families, and the event sponsors. The omelets were delisioso!

AKF Martial Arts Crystal Lake10 December 2017 These were just two of the many T4T events hosted around McHenry County. People could have Breakfast with Santa at Randall Oaks Golf Club and be greeted by Marine Corps League members Andy Ferrera and Daniel Boucek. T4T volunteers were busy as bees throughout the various communities. Local volunteer coordinators received numerous telephone calls from the businesses on their "T4T Coverage" list informing them that their T4T boxes were full and needed to be emptied. This is only part of what goes on behind the fancy scarlet sport coats or dress blue uniforms. The toys are counted and then taken to storage lockers until the various clearing houses who sort the toys for boys, girls, and age groups are ready to begin their role. In the end the clearing houses get the toys organized to be delivered to the families in need. Stay tuned for Lee Totman's After Action Report, in the February 2018 newsletter, that he will send to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation in Quantico, VA in Mid-January 2018. We will also report all those volunteers who helped for the 2017 Toys for Tots effort in McHenry County.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

As I prepare this article, Christmas is just a few days away and preparations for family celebrations are in full

affect. During this season of preparation, so many were working behind the scenes, making it possible for those

who might not otherwise be able to make this a very Merry Christmas for their families. Communities came

together in ways that some thought impossible, to make this an awesome time of year. I stand in awe of the

generosity and love that has been pouring forth this year. Rather than continue with words, I am going to let the

pictures speak for themselves. Below are just a few of the examples of the special “elves” that have toiled

selflessly……

Not trying to offend anyone by most of the pictures being that of our Auxiliary ladies, but, those are the pics that

were available to me. This last picture was taken at Fire and Ice in Marengo, where we gathered to celebrate

another amazing Toys For Tots season coming to a close. While we were waiting for our dinners, Colleen

Helfers received a notification from a Marine that there was an immediate, yet unspoken, need for prayers….

Yes, these amazing ladies joined hands in prayer, right there in the middle of the restaurant and prayed for that

Marine. It’s what we do!!

The ladies of the McHenry County Marine Corps League Auxiliary would like to wish everyone a very Merry

Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

15 December 1948: The Secretary of the Navy signed a "Memorandum of Agreement" with the State Department which laid the basis for the modern Marine Security Guard program at U.S. embassies throughout the world.

19 December 1972: The Marine detachment of the USS Ticonderoga provided shipboard security for three U.S. astronauts, Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans, Harrison Schmitt, and their Apollo-17 space capsule. The astronauts had successfully completed a (then) record lunar stay of more than 75 hours.
