They are finishing what they started Students face many challenges and often must overcome barriers to be successful

in college. One group of students at MECC is a great example of determination after initial setbacks. These are the students who, for a variety of reasons, did not receive a high school diploma. They re-started when they decided to get their GED. For many, this success becomes the motivation to continue on to college. Below are two examples of current MECC students who are finishing what they started.

Shirley Owens, a 48 year old Norton resident, has over-come some setbacks to her educational/career goals and has become a prime example of what can be achieved with proper motivation. Shir-ley states that she was married at 17, had her first child at 18, and her second at 28. It was not until 2004 that Shirley received her GED and pursued her career goal, which is to be a respiratory therapist. Though she relished her role as a mother, as her children matured, Shirley de-cided to continue her education.

This decision has evidently been an excellent choice as Shirley currently has a 4.0 GPA and is a proud member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), which is an honors society for students with high GPAs. “If I can do it, anyone can,” states Shirley as encouragement to others who may be hesitant about obtaining their GED and/or returning to college. “Everything has been a very good experience,” she relates, when asked whether she had experienced any negativity or problems when making her decision to further her education after nearly 30 years since she left high school. Shirley’s achievements can provide inspiration to others who may be hesitant about pursuing a GED and a college degree, and she willingly, and deservedly, is a role model for others.

Kelly Lytle, 24, of Big Stone Gap, is an outstand-ing role model for other students who may be questioning the merits of obtaining a GED and enrolling in college, especially if it has been several years since they last attended high school. While each individual has different reasons for not getting a high school diploma, Lytle states, “I actually only needed a couple of credits to receive a high school diploma, but I did not feel I had the ‘emotional maturity’ at that time to continue.” However, Ly-tle, after a 5 year educational hiatus, received his GED in 2009, which allowed him to continue his “love of learning.”

Not only did Lytle receive his GED, but is currently enrolled at MECC, majoring in Computer Networking. He states that his ultimate career goal is to be employed as a Computer Systems Manager. Getting his GED was the first step, and “The Race to GED” was the program which allowed him to do this. “I would

recommend the Race to GED Program, as well as attending MECC, to anyone,” says Lytle. Also, he declares that “The only hindrance to achieving is yourself!” This is why Kyle Lytle is an excellent role model and success story for others to take in-spiration from.

How to Transfer

Need Religion? To expand offerings in Religion, MECC will offer a new course in Spring Se-

mester 2011, Survey of the New Testament – REL 210. This course is an overview of the New Testament. The setting, purpose, and message of each book will be explored. Announcing a new option in scheduling…8-week sessions

Programs within the Business & Information Technology Division now have a variety of classes available in 8-week sessions. Instead of taking two classes at the same time, students will take one class for eight weeks, followed by a subsequent class the following 8 weeks. Students are encouraged to talk with their advisor to determine the best combination of classes for their program.

What are the advantages of 8-week classes?• Students can complete a full-time course load (12 credits) while taking less than four classes at a time, in

two 8-week sessions over a 16-week period. • More time to focus on individual classes. • Reduced stress – assignments are more concentrated and easier to manage. • Empowers you to go from part-time to full-time status

Contact the Business & Information Technology Division at (276) 523-7462 for more information.

Healing HandsThis emblem was designed by the Practical Nursing class admitted in

August. The emblem stands for: -The hands represent caring and active Healing Hands members. The

different colors contained within the hands represent all cultures and our commitment to provide culturally sensitive care to all peoples.

-The diamonds at the four corners represent the directions and pathways that nursing can lead us.

-The concentric circles represents the continuity of health care and a world philosophy.

-The colors white, navy blue, forest green, and burgundy represent purity of spirit, loyalty, growth, and compassion.

-These symbols together represent our commitment to excellence within the nursing profession and the hope that we can impart to all people through our knowledge, skills, and service.

Whisenhunt becomes new LPN program directorLena Whisenhunt graduated from MECC’s RN Nursing program in 2000, and now she has returned as the

director of the College’s Practical Nursing (LPN) program. This career move comes after ten years of teaching and experience in the medical field.

Whisenhunt has often worked full-time and part-time jobs simultaneously, saying “That’s what nurses do!” She worked at Clintwood Heritage Hall and almost five years at St. Mary’s Hospital primarily in medical surgical pediatrics. She has also worked at the Dickenson Community Hospital and at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in the orthopedic neurologic unit. The past five years she has taught at the Wise County Career Technical Center in their LPN program.

Her medical training started with her graduation from MECC’s Nursing Assistant (CNA) program in 1997, followed by her Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing in 2000. In 2008 she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Old Dominion University, taking classes on the MECC campus. And she is not finished. Currently she is considering a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan with the goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner.

Whisenhunt’s excitement really peaks when she talks about the program’s Healing Hands student club. “Their community project is teaching about sex education and drug abuse resistance at Coeburn’s Middle School and High School. They also are creating Shoeboxes with personal hygiene items and snacks to take to Wise Heritage Hall and Ridgecrest Manor. And proceeds from their bake sales goes to cancer research.”

For more information and entrance requirements for MECC’s Practical Nursing program, contact Lena Whisenhunt at [email protected] or call 276-523-2400.

Opportunities for Health Care Training and CareersHealth careers offer some of the best opportunities for jobs, good pay, and opportunities for

advancement. MECC offers training in many health fields. Most of these programs accept a limited number of students each year; therefore, if you are interested you must plan ahead to get all application materials in by the deadline for acceptance into the next cohort. A cohort is a group of students who go through the program together. Most of these programs also require pre-requisite courses that you must successfully complete before you apply. Consult MECC’s Catalog for more information.

DISABILITY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE An important issue for potential and current college students with disabilities is to understand the differences between disability rights laws in high school and college. In college, more responsibility is placed on the student. Check out the differences on MECC’s Disability Services website: www.mecc.edu/dept/services/disability.htm

MECC sets Blood Drive recordDebra Wampler, SWVA Donor Recruiter for the Marsh Regional Blood

Center, said it best, “Congratulations to Mountain Empire Community Col-lege for setting a record for the best drive in the 64 year history of Marsh Regional Blood Center. Students and staff did an outstanding job on Sept. 22 to make this day so successful.”

MECC collected 133 units of blood from 166 participants, a record in both participants and in actual units collected. The blood drive on the MECC campus is sponsored four times each year by the College’s student clubs.

Modern component therapy makes it possible for each donation to ben-efit up to three patients. MECC’s drives go a long way in providing the re-quired 40,000 units of blood to the 22 local medical facilities that are served by MRBC in our region.

Join the next blood drive on November 17th.

Crystal Barnette - Student Government President

An MECC Diplomat, a tutor, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honorary society, and now the President of the Stu-dent Government Association (SGA). Crystal Barnette, an RN Nursing student, is a role model for student involvement. Her interests are to increase student and faculty interaction and community service. At the time of this publication, she is leading the MECC Serves annual drive to donate toys and other items to local charities over the holiday season.

As SGA President, Crystal represents MECC students on the College Council and the Violence Prevention & Campus Safety Committee, and as a student representative at Local Board meetings.

Helping Students SucceedCollege is a time for many things, such as making new friends, joining clubs, as well as finding out what

our academic abilities are to achieve our academic goals. However, sometimes we might have difficulty in a particular subject, such as Math, English, History, Anatomy, etc. You may ask yourself, “Is there anywhere I can get help?” Well, the answer is a resounding “YES!”

Help can be found in the GAINing Excellence Center, which is located in Room G216. The GAIN Program is a federally funded program which provides not only tutoring to qualifying students, but also provides other services, such as mentoring, transfer assistance, and referrals to other agencies which may assist in other areas of difficulties we may have. Some of the criteria for qualifying for the GAIN Program include being a first-generation, degree-seeking student and monetary qualifications. However, all services are FREE! Also, even if you do not qualify for GAIN services, you may qualify for tutoring under a program known as Parallel Tutoring.

Parallel is a program which does have some qualifiers for students, but is a way for students who do not qualify for GAIN to possibly receive tutoring. Specifically, Parallel is designed for students in a certificate program rather than a degree program. But don’t worry…GAIN tutors are held to the same high standards regardless of the program they are serving as a tutor! All tutors must display a thorough knowledge of the subject(s) they wish to tutor, have written recommendations from a faculty member, as well as possessing “people skills.”

If you would like to find out more about the GAIN Program, please stop by and visit us and talk to our friendly staff, tutors or mentors. We are located in Room G216, across the hall from the vending machines. Let us help YOU achieve your academic goals!

Mary Collins and Tim Sage are two of MECC’s Tutors.

Tutoring is just one of the many services offered at MECC to help students Finish What They Start

Eastman Interns and Beyond

Eastman says it best on its website: If you are not a current student at Mountain Empire Community College, Northeast State Community College or Walters State Community College, you are not eligible to apply to this student program.

Since 2007, MECC’s Electromechanical – Computerized Manufacturing program has been placing students into the Eastman intern program. Students complete the first year of their college program, must pass the Work Keys test, then spend one year in a paid internship with benefits at Eastman. They then return to complete their degree program. When hired by Eastman, the new employee begins an apprenticeship program.

The Electromechanical - Maintenance Entry Trainee Program provides a one year opportunity for selected students to apply and develop their knowledge and skills as a maintenance professional in an industrial setting.

• Trainees can receive college credit towards their Associate of Applied Science degree.• Students are closely supervised and mentored on a daily basis with the goal of

providing a hands-on learning environment. • Completion of this program is one of the requirements for consideration for possible

future employment as an Eastman Maintenance Entry Helper apprentice.MECC students who have served as interns at Eastman are: Chance Adams, Tucker

Begley, Zachary Berry, Clyde Church, Jason Cope, Matt Dotson, Michael Dotson, Wesley Fields, Marcus Fleenor, Acelyn Garrett, William Graham, Jarrod Thomas Henry, Andrew Neal Lawson, Brent Maness, Travis Parsons, Will Rogers, David Shull, Chadwick Spears, Zachary Chance Thompson, Matthew Trent, Andrew Dustin Williams, and Jesse Wilson. Chris Roberts, Brian McPherson and Brandon Tomlinson started their internship in June.

For information about MECC’s Electromechanical program, contact Dr. Wendell Fowler at [email protected].

Jesse Wilson was among the first student interns

from MECC. He is now an employee at Eastman and has completed the apprenticeship

in record time.
