SURGICAL DERMATOLOGY SERVICES
Specialists working for Medical Clinics have expertise in all forms of skin cancer surgery. They all work in an
extended multi-disciplinary clinical team to deliver comprehensive care to the local population in a variety of NHS
locations. Medical Clinics has 10 Consultant Dermatological Surgeons working for the organisation and many
other specialists with surgical cancer skills.
MOHS MICROGRAPHIC SURGERY
Dr Bav Shergill is the Regional Lead Mohs Surgeon for the South East of England. There are approximately 280
Mohs cases operated on per annum and services are operated from two clinical locations based at Queen Victoria
Hospital (QVH) in East Grinstead and Worthing Laser & Skin Clinic. Referrals are received from all locations
across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.
Mohs surgery is provided by three principal Mohs surgeons:
• Dr Bav Shergill – Lead Mohs Surgeon QVH and Worthing
• Dr Nik Nicolaou – Worthing
• Dr Andrew Morris – Worthing
Complex reconstructions due to large defects are surgically reconstructed by QVH Plastic Surgeons, Maxillo-
facial Surgeons, and Oculoplastics. The main hospital location at East Grinstead is the Regional Plastic Surgery
centre. At Worthing, we have a second centre where more complex reconstructions are supported by Mr Satish
Madhavarajan (Maxillofacial & Oral Surgeon at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and Miss
Jennifer O’Neill (Consultant Plastic Surgeon). The Mohs set-up at Worthing Laser & Skin Clinic has state-of-the-
art equipment including dual head teaching microscopes and 4K television screens that can capture high-
resolution still images of clinical histopathology. All cases are subject to extensive audits and robust clinical
governance captured on reporting systems.
HISTOPATHOLOGY TRAINING
Fellows will be given the opportunity of one-to-one training in histopathology reporting for all Mohs cases. They
may also obtain additional histopathology training with Dr Jerry Grant in Worthing Hospital or with Consultant
Histopathologists at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

COMPLIANCE NHS STANDARDS OF CARE
The organisation is fully registered with the following NHS standards:
• Care Quality Commission
• NHS Pensions Schemes
• CNST (Clinical Negligence for NHS Trusts/Services)
• Connecting for Health IT Toolkits
• Data Protection
• Caldicott Guardian
• Designated Body Registered with the General Medical Council (for appraisal and revalidation)
We have an appointed Serious Risk Information Officer, Adult and Children’s Safeguarding Lead, Dementia
Lead, Clinical Governance Leads, and Clinical Directors covering all clinical service locations.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Clinical services are operated on electronic patient record systems across the entire NHS clinical service. We
use bespoke screens/templates designed for recording clinical activity for skin referrals and skin surgery. This
captures all patient activity and we have delivered services using this technology across multiple clinical sites
reporting directly into NHS central database systems. In some acute NHS trust locations, use of the trust systems
proves necessary because of local IT system restrictions. At all other sites we use a web-hosted dermatology
software system and digital dictation. This allows instant messaging between administrators, nurses and clinical
staff in real-time.
In Brighton, East Sussex, we are developing a new technology hub. This facility will develop future technologies
for dermatology service provision. We have a new patient friendly skin referral app undergoing piloting across 10
GP practices and being evaluated for streamlining NHS referrals. This is called “My Skin Doctor” and is proving
a success having been integrated into our NHS booking systems and assisting in streamlining referrals.
The aim is to use innovative technology across the entire clinical service and to improve utilisation of resources.

FELLOWSHIP POSTS
Geographical Locations
Clinical services are located in some of the best places to live in the UK - Sussex, Surrey and Kent. The South
East Coast offers a fantastic quality of life compared to other parts of the UK. There is a significant potential to
settle in the area permanently for Fellows that demonstrate competency and ability to work as part of the clinical
team. Few clinical services can offer any similar fellowship structure that will include a wide breadth of experience
in cutaneous skin cancer surgery, Mohs surgery, lasers and medical aesthetics.
Fellows will be expected to support clinical activity across the following locations:
• Sussex: Eastbourne/Hastings/Worthing/Haywards Heath/Hurstpierpoint & East Grinstead
• Surrey: Horsham/Crawley/Redhill/Cranleigh
• Kent: No planned fellowship activity
Travelling and Driving to Locations The Fellowship salary has been enhanced to include £6000.00 for the provision of travelling and car parking expenses. All Fellows must be willing and flexible to delivering clinical services with the clinical team to maximise their learning experience across different locations. Where possible, full day commitments will be scheduled at a specific location to minimise travel time. A full clean driving licence is essential for this post.
