A total of 103 plant species within 48 families are collected for their curative properties in the field of veterinary medicine. The family which provided the greatest number of species was Compositae (13 species), followed by Euphorbiaceqe (11 species) and Papillionaceae (9 species). A total of 38 different pathological states are treated, the most frequent being gastrointestinal disorders, followed by helminthosis, wounds and urethral infections. KEYWORDS: Animal health - Medicinal plants - Natural resources - Tanzania - Traditional medicine. INTRODUCTION Plants with medicinal properties enjoy the highest consideration in indigenous systems of medicine throughout the world. For a developing country such as Tanzania, where resources are scarce, herbalists play a crucial role in the health care system for both humans and animals. Knowledge of the curative properties of specific plants is an accomplished art which is passed on from one generation to the next. This art is still maintained in Tanzania, especially in rural areas; when an animal falls sick a herbalist is usually consulted first, and only in case of failure is a veterinarian sought. Very often, the nearest veterinarian may be many miles away. As J. Lundstrom correctly observed (personal communication, 1992), medicinal plants are under threat due to changes in the environment caused by increasing human populations and the destruction of land, leading to the decline of many plant populations. There is a growing need to ensure proper management of plant resources for the benefit of future generations. However, some conscientious herbalists in Tanzania maintain small gardens which contain important medicinal plants threatened with extinction. et donc inaccessibles à la grande majorité de la population.
