Ladies and Gentlemen, dear fi gure skating family,

On behalf of the organizing committee, allow me to welcome you in Bratislava at the 22nd International Figure Skating Competition – The Ondrej Nepela Trophy, named after the best known Slovak fi gure skater, multiple European and World Champion, Winter Olympic Games Winner.

Thanks to the International Skating Union, we are very proud to present this year’s Ondrej Nepela Trophy, for the fi rst time, as the part of ISU Challenge Series.

A great competition will thus be even greater, with more skaters in each category. In return, we promise to make them all feel welcome and home during the competition.

We would like to express our thanks to all of you who participate and help to make this event successful. The International Skating Union, the Mayor of Bratislava, Mr. Milan Vtáčnik, the Slovak Figure Skating Association, to name a few, as well as to all the sponsors, supporters, volunteers and friends.

We are looking forward to seeing you, the fi gure skaters/the athletes, skating and performing to the best of your abilities. We certainly hope, that the long hours you have spent on and off the ice each and every day, will pay off, and after leaving Bratislava, you will have the fondest memories of a job well done. For that and for the whole season we wish you best of luck!

Keď Ondrej Nepela vyhral v roku 1972 olympijskú súťaž v Sappore a následne o rok neskôr získal v Bratislave tretí titul majstra sveta, bol som ešte v mladom veku dospieva-júceho študenta. V tom čase už túžil po revue, no zabojoval a opäť zvíťazil.

Dear sport friends,

It was a great pleasure to receive the information that the 22nd Ondrej Nepela Trophy will be held in Bratislava again. Not only out of respect to the best Slovak athlete of 20th century , but also with the admiration of international fi gure skating competitions organized in the capital of Slovakia.

When Ondrej Nepela won the 1972 Olympic competition in Sapporo and then a year later won his third world title in Bratislava, I was a young teenage student. His strength, endurance and re-sponsibility which he prepared for the competitions with, impressed me. Although I have seen that his last year on the amateur ice has been moving him to the state of resistance and slight revolt and that his heart desired revue, he did not give up and won once again. At that time, he became an example of a successful athlete and human modesty for many young followers.

With the passage of 41 years since his victory in Bratislava, the memories of strong emotions fade, but the recognition remains unchanged. It is enhanced annually by fi gure skat-ing competitions carrying his name. Bratislava has always been and still is generous to athletes and sports traditions. I wish to the organizors of the 22nd Ondrej Nepela Trophy a successful event and to the competitors from all over the world, I would like to wish not only to perform victoriously but also to feel well in our city...

Milan Ftáčnik, Mayor of Bratislava

List of Winners 1993 – 2013

Ondrej Nepela (January 22, 1951 in Bratislava, Slovakia – February 2, 1989 in Mannheim, Germany) was an Olympic gold medalist and three-time World champion Slovak fi gure skater who competed for Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

CareerNepela began skating at age 7. He was coached by Hilda Múdra. His fi rst major international competition, at age 13, was the 1964 Winter Olympics; he fi nished 22nd. He went on to win fi ve the European Figure Skating Championships fi ve times between 1969 to 1973; the World Figure Skating Championships in 1971, 1972, and 1973; and the 1972 Winter Olympics. Nepela wanted to retire from competition after the 1972 season, but agreed to continue one more year because the 1973 World Figure Skating Championships were to be held in his home town of Bratislava. In his second autobiography, Toller Cranston details a sexual tryst between himself and Nepela at 1973 World Championships.[1] Cranston was distracted and affected by their sexual affair and placed 5th while Nepela won the event and even earned a 6.0 during his free skate.

Following his amateur skating career, Nepela toured for 13 years as a soloist with Holiday on Ice. He then established himself as a coach in Germany. He coached Claudia Leistner to her European title in 1989.Nepela died of AIDS-related complications in 1989, at the age of 38. Since 1993, the Slovak Figure Skating Association has held a competition each fall called the Ondrej Nepela Memorial. In December 2000, the Slovak Republic named him Slovakian athlete of the century. His former coach, Mudra, received the award on his behalf.

Region Welcome to Bratislava. Ours is an old city, but one of Europe’s newest capitals. As we hope you will see, it is big enough to have everything a visitor might want, but small enough to remain welcoming and unpretentious.Bratislava became a capital city when Slovakia became independent, in 1993. It has rapidly acquired the top-class hotels, restaurants and tourist facilities that refl ect its status. But the town’s history goes back centuries, to pre-Roman times. Successive waves of development as a major trading centre and, for almost 300 years, as the coronation city for the kings and queens of Hungary have blessed us with a fascinating blend of architecture and public spaces. The intimate old town, overlooked by the castle, is criss-crossed with narrow, traffi c-free lanes and studded with mediaeval churches, Baroque palaces, small shops and fi ne cafes, bars and restaurants. At its centre is the beautiful Old Town Square.

Nearby, the unique New Bridge, built in the 1970s with its distinctive ‘UFO’ tower, spans the Danube River. On the right bank is central Europe’s oldest public park, Sad Janka Krala, and next to it one of Bratislava’s several modern shopping centres, Aupark. The city has a strong artistic tradition, with regular concert and opera performances at the Slovak National Theatre, and several outstanding galleries.Beyond the centre, Bratislava’s superb position on the banks of the Danube and below the forested slopes of the Small Carpathian hills means a walk in the woods or a bicycle ride along the river are never more than a few minutes away. Only slightly further afi eld are the wine towns of the Small Carpathians. But any restaurant in the city will offer a range of local products, the fruit of our region’s centuries-old winemaking tradition. Bratislava is a safe, reasonably-priced destination that more and more visitors are now discovering. We look forward to welcoming you too.Enjoy your stay!

Venue A fully air-conditioned and heated ice rink of the size of 60 m by 30m – the new Ondrej Nepelala Arena – offers a comfortable auditorium with 10,000 seats and convenient social and sanitary facilities, including the equipment for the disabled who can easily enter the auditorium on wheel-chairs. Visitors can be served in 2 restaurant (WIFI cable) and 4 cafeterias. 15 skyboxes have .This complex have got 2 practice ice rinks hall B 28 x 58 and hall A 26 x 56m. This copmplew was opening 10th of April 2011. Temperature in center ice rink: air +15°C, ice –5°C.

Climate The average outside temperature during the period concerned is +20° Celsius at day and +8° Celsius at night.

How to reach BratislavaThe capital of Slovakia is not diffi cult to reach. While making your travel arrangements, you can fi nd the following recommendations useful.
