2011 SOFTBALL GAME NOTESUNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

2011 MEMPHIS SOFTBALL

Nice To Meet YouThis season, the Tigers face 10 opponents for the fi rst time in program history. Nine of Mem-phis’ fi rst 14 opponents are against teams the Tiger Softball program has never played. Mem-phis meets Kentucky for the second time after a fi rst meeting at the FIU Combat Classic ear-lier this season. The Tigers will meet Stanford, UC Davis and Colorado State for the fi rst time in program history during the tournament this weekend. Memphis is 3-1 in fi rst time meetings this season with wins over Ohio State, Kentucky and Georgia State. The Tigers are 43-49 all-time in fi rst-time meetings and 25-24 when a fi rst-time meeting is played at a neutral site.

Caution: Rough Road Ahead!Memphis faced a tough test to begin the season with the FIU Combat Classic, but the schedule didn’t get any easier from there. The Tigers play 21 of their fi rst 23 games away from Tiger Soft-ball Complex. In the fi rst 23 games, Memphis will face 10 teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, including four of the fi rst fi ve games.

Close CallsThrough nine games this season, seven games have been decided by one run. The Tigers are 5-2 in those games after three 1-0 shutouts at the Panther Invitational, including two-straight games. Last season, Memphis was involved in 16 games decided by a run (31.4 percent) and 36 by three runs or less (70.6 percent). The Tigers were 7-9 in one-run games last year and 15-21 in games decided by three runs or less.

Tigers In The Golden StateMemphis has played in California twice in the six year history of the program. Last season, the Tigers played in the UC-Santa Barbara Gaucho Classic hosted and defeated Drexel 2-1, but lost to North Dakota State 6-1. Memphis traveled to California for the fi rst time in 2007 and went 4-1 in the University of San Diego Tournament.

Five Tigers Make Homecoming TripCarly Hummel (Bakersfi eld), Nikki Moreno (Tra-cy), Cheyenne Mascarenas (Garden Grove), Janelle Valle (Lake Elsinore) and Lelani Ber-nardino (Valencia) all return to their home state of California this weekend for the Stanford Nike Invitational. Hummel is 1-0 in games in Califor-nia with a 5-2 decision over Drexel in 2010. Ber-nardino is 3-for-7 (.429) with a double and one RBI in her Memphis career in games played in her home state.

Hummel Among C-USA LeadersAfter one week of the season, Carly Hummel is among the top-fi ve pitchers in C-USA in several statistical categories. Better Late Than NeverThe Tiger offense has produced 11 sixth-inning runs in nine games and those 11 runs have come in handy. Memphis tied DePaul with a two-run sixth and rallied with four runs in the sixth against FIU to tie, but dropped both games. Last weekend, Memphis used the sixth inning to earn three victories. Memphis used one-run sixth in-nings to post victories over Appalachian State and Lipscomb. A three-run sixth helped the Ti-gers top Georgia State after trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning.

Three Is The Magic NumberWhen Carly Hummel steps in the pitching circle as a starter, all she needs is three runs of sup-port. With 27 starts in her career, Hummel is 14-2 when the Tiger offense puts three or more runs on the board. Her only losses in which the Tigers scored three or more runs came against Tulsa on March 27 and 28 of 2010.

Quick StartMemphis has scored 10, fi rst inning runs this season. The Tigers topped North Florida 3-0 to open the season and all three runs came in the fi rst inning. Memphis again scored three fi rst inning runs in the second game of the season against DePaul, but dropped that game 6-5. After scoring one run in the fi rst against Ohio State, the U of M scored two runs off a Maddie McKinley two-run shot to take an early lead against Kentucky. When scoring in the fi rst inning this season, Memphis is 4-1 and 6-1 when scoring fi rst in a game.

Mott Adds To Triple RecordSenior shortstop Heather Mott added a triple to her school record for career triples with a three-bagger against Appalachian State on Feb. 19. Mott hit a lead-off triple in the sixth inning to help Memphis to a 1-0 victory in the game. The triple was the eighth in her career and Mott holds the record over Leila Dolfo who had fi ve career triples.

Shifting GearsAfter no stolen bases in the fi rst two games, the Tigers shifted gears in a fi ve game stretch to steal 11 bags. Memphis had three steals against Kentucky and Georgia State. On the season, Memphis is 11-15 attempting to steal. Lelani Bernardino and Maddie McKinley lead the team with three steals each.

Walking In MemphisIn just nine games play, Kailey Kassner has walked nine times to lead C-USA. Kassner has reached base successfully in eight of the nine games and holds a team-leading .536 on-base percentage. Kassner has 44 career walks and is one shy of tying Kara Ross for fourth-place in the record books for walks in a career.

Coach Thees Garners Win No. 300When Memphis took the fi eld on Feb. 11 against North Florida, head coach Windy Thees was seeking her 300th career victory. Carly Hummel threw a no hitter to help Thees earn her 300th career victory. Thees is in her 11th season as a skipper with a 306-231 record. In just six seasons at the program she built from scratch, Thees has compiled a record of 143-139.

Hummel Tosses No HitterSophomore pitcher Carly Hummel tossed the sixth no hitter in program history on Feb. 11 at the FIU Combat Classic. After throwing four one-hitters in her freshman campaign, Hummel started her sophomore season with her fi rst ca-reer no hitter. Hummel didn’t allow a hit through nine and two thirds innings pitched this season.

Memphis Sweeps C-USA Weekly AwardsThe U of M swept the C-USA weekly awards in week one of the season as pitcher Carly Hum-mel earned C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors and fi rst baseman Jessica Phillips picked up C-USA Hitter of the Week accolades. Hummel tossed a no-hitter in the season-opener and fi nished week one with a 3-0 record, a 1.24 ERA and allowed just 12 hits. Phillips homered twice and drove in fi ve in the fi rst week of action and posted a .462 batting average in the open-ing week of action. With Hummel and Phillips earning the weekly awards, the U of M softball program records its fi rst sweep of the weekly awards in program history. Phillips is the sec-ond player to earn the weekly hitting award in program history.

Veteran-Laden TigersHead Coach Windy Thees has built a 2011 ros-ter than features 11 of 22 players that are ju-niors or seniors. With that experience comes 742 combined starts entering the 2011 season between the 16 returning letterwinners. In the circle the Tigers feature two seniors, but only 67 career starts between Janelle Valle (39), Carly Hummel (24) and Lauren Carly (4).

THE LAST TIME ....WINDY THEES

Head Coach • 6th Year 139-139, 302-231

Hired with the daunt-ing task of starting a soft-ball program from scratch, University of Memphis head coach Windy Thees has stepped up to the chal-lenge. In just fi ve seasons, Thees has built the Tigers into a program that has

continued to show it can compete with any team in the country. Now entering her sixth season in 2011, Mem-phis looks to continue its growth with a squad that returns eight starters, three pitchers and 16 let-terwinners. Six newcomers join Tiger Softball for Coach Thees’ sixth season. In the short fi ve-year history of the Memphis softball program, Thees has compiled a 136-137 (.498) overall record and guided the team to the Conference USA Championship Tournament in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Tigers fi nished seventh in C-USA in 2010 with a 25-26 overall record and 8-15 mark in league play. Coach Thees tutored the Tiger pitching staff to seven single-season pitching records in 2010, including ERA (1.97), opponent batting average (.192), most strikeouts per game (6.62), fewest hits allowed (241), fewest home runs allowed (18), fewest runs allowed (130) and fewest earned runs allowed (98). Carly Hummel highlighted the individual pitching performances with fi ve games of 10 or more strikeouts, including four of the top fi ve strikeout performances in program history. Hum-mel struck out a school record 15 batters against Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State, re-spectively. Hummel tossed the third-best strike-out performance against Saint Louis and the fi fth-ranked came against Wichita State. Memphis pitchers tossed six one-hitters in 2010. Hummel threw four one-hitters and com-bined for another. Lauren Carley threw one and combined for a one-hitter with Hummel. The 2010 season also saw the Tigers ad-vance to the C-USA Tournament semifi nals for the fi rst time in program history after a 5-1 victory over Tulsa in the opening round. In her fi ve seasons at Memphis, Thees’ play-ers have earned eight All-Conference awards, seven all-conference freshman team selections and two NFCA All-South Region selections. This past year, Lelani Barnardino and Vanessa Walle earned Second Team All-Conference USA selection and Carly Hummel was named to the all-conference freshman team. Thees’ players have also found success in the classroom with all 15 of her seniors earning their diploma. In addition, under Thees’ tenure the Ti-gers have earned four CoSIDA/ESPN The Maga-zine All-District selections, 15 NFCA Scholar Athlete selections and four C-USA All-Academic team selections. The softball program has twice produced the U of M’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Former volleyball and softball let-terwinner Melissa Nance was the 2008 Memphis nominee and former pitching standout Jenna Kubesch was nominated in 2007. Kubesch also earned one of 12 C-USA Postgraduate Scholar-ships.
