Senior staff with learning disabilities shared their stories about overcoming barriers to gain full-time, meaningful employment. We found their stories really inspiring and the group were able to interview them to find out how having a good job has enhanced their lives. After our visit to National Mencap we headed for central London. We filled up on some ‘posh-nosh’ and took in the sights of Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, the London Eye and Leicester Square. We chatted happily on the train home. ‘This has been the best day of my life’ seemed to be the quote of the day! Laura and James were extremely proud of how professional everyone was in representing Mencap Liverpool.

London Calling...For career minded Young Mencap Liverpool members

In October, Laura, James, Chloe and six of our young members took a trip to London to see some of the famous sights, and visit National Mencap’s Head Office. This trip marked the end of a series of workshops funded by The European Social Fund.

The theme of the workshops was to inspire our younger members aged (18-25) to think about the idea that they can become; respected, professional members of a workforce in a meaningful paid career.

The day began at Lime Street Station where we all boarded the train to London Euston. For many of us, this was our first visit to the capital.

Upon arriving at National Mencap, we were greeted by the friendly staff who had taken time out of their busy day to show us around their office. This gave us the opportunity to see how a large organisation works and the varying departments that form part of a national charity.

Well what can we say; we are sat here writing this thinking what incredibly lucky and privileged people we have been.

Over the last three years working with people with a learning disability and their carers - who are simply heroes, have made it a pleasure for us to come to work!

We are extremely proud of the ground breaking projects that we have developed, delivered during our time here at Mencap Liverpool. Whether it has involved a coffee and a catch up with carer advice or delivering a series of workshops to young people with learning disabilities, we have always been passionate, determined and person-centred in our approach to our work.

We have met many fantastic, inspirational and determined individuals along the way and have enjoyed all aspects of our work. There is nothing more rewarding than playing a part in an individual’s journey to achieving their desired goals.

As we begin to say our goodbyes it has given us the opportunity to meet with the many people we have worked with over the years and made us realise just how many personal goals and aspirations, however big or small have been achieved, with a little bit of support from us!

We have so many fantastic stories, thoughts and memories from our time here, too many to share, but please know we hold each and everyone dear to us.

Thank you again to all our members and partnership agencies who have made our time here incredible! Hope to see you all soon once we are back from our travels.

A good bye message from Laura & James

Best WishesLaura and James

Getting CraftySince October, our weekly Wednesday socials have included a chance to get involved with arts and crafts. We’ve been involved in all manner of creative processes from felt-making, to producing Christmas decorations.

Each person pays £1.50 towards the cost of materials for each session, but we get to keep what we’ve made - or give them away as Christmas presents!

Riley’s Snooker SocialIn late October, 12 of Mencap Liverpool’s members and volunteers took a trip to Riley’s Snooker Club in town, to try out their Snooker skills and have a few drinks.

We had a great time, and it was a really good chance for members and volunteers new and old to get to know each other.

The staff at Riley’s gave Mencap Liverpool two hours worth of games across 4 tables for free and couldn’t have been more helpful on the day, so we wanted to say a big thank you to them for being so accommodating!

We are hoping to arrange more trips like this one out, and we really appreciate the support from organisations such as Riley’s that help us to run days out like this. In a game of doubles, the competition heats up!

Ready for action! Derek and Brian volunteer on Tuesdays

We are planning to do some long term projects in 2013, such as creating a scrap book of member’s photographs, showing their year at Mencap Liverpool. If you’d like to come along to the sessions, they will run from 11am-12.30pm each Wednesday.
