BATON ROUGE, LA 3
Saint Maria Goretti, born in Corinaldo, Italy, is fondly known as the “Little Saint of Great Mercy.” In October, 2015 just prior to Pope Francis declaring a year of mercy, the pilgrimage of mercy began with the principal relics of Maria Goretti traveling across America. Our Lady of Mercy was one of the selected stops on the pilgrimage across America. Thousands of visitors from across Louisiana and several southern states descended on the Church to be present for the viewing of the youngest saint in the history of the Catholic Church. The motorcade arrived and the clear glass reliquary, adorned with golden cornice corners and ornate feet was lifted out of the transport vehicle. The reliquary was carried into the Church, with throngs of visitors following, up the center aisle to an awaiting pedestal draped in red and positioned at the Sanctuary steps. Inside the glass reliquary was a wax statue likeness of her and within which repose her skeletal remains. Security personnel and several members of the Knights of Columbus escorted the reliquary and remained adjacent to it the entire time that she was at Our Lady of Mercy. We were fortunate to have her remains present in the Church for two days. Thousands stood in long lines to get a glimpse of the reliquary and to be able to touch the sides of the glass casket. It was an amazing experience covered prominently by local, state and national media outlets.
Maria’s father had passed away and she and her family received help from a neighbor and their son to maintain their modest farm. They were poor people. The neighbor’s son, Alessandro, who was considerably older than 11 year old Maria, kept making unwelcome advances towards her. When she refused him, Alessandro, in an attack on Maria, stabbed her to death when she resisted. Maria suffered many long hours from her injuries and died in a hospital soon after asking the Lord for mercy for Alessandro.
After many years in prison in solitary confinement refusing to repent for her murder, Alessandro had a vision one night that Maria came to him holding 14 white lilies, representing the fourteen stab wounds she received. Maria gave him the lilies as a sign of her forgiveness at which point he repented and changed his life. Alessandro was ultimately released from prison many years after.
Maria is honored at the Basilica of Our Lady of Graces and Saint Maria Goretti, located in Neptune, Italy. You can see the reliquary that contains the relics of the saint’s body in the Basilica and then see the farmhouse where she was murdered (the kitchen is now a chapel), as well as the room in which she lived.
Saint Maria Goretti was Beatified in 1947 and Canonized in 1950 so soon after her death that her own mother and other family members attended the Beatification.
Maria's feast day, celebrated on July 6, was inserted in the General Roman Calendar when it was revised in 1969. She is the patron saint of chastity, rape victims, youth, teenage girls, poverty, purity, and forgiveness.
In 1958, Our Lady of Mercy received a first class relic of Saint Maria Goretti and that relic resides in a sepulcher in our main altar.
St. Maria Goretti, pray for us! Maria Goretti's Feast Day is July 6th

GARDEN OF PEACE
COLUMBARIUM
Dear Faithful Mercy,The Columbarium Garden of Peace has now received final approval of Bishop Duca and the Diocese. Work has now begun on this beautiful addition to our campus. In accord with the Diocesan policy four contractors were selected to bid on the columbarium project. They were Deumite Construction, Cangelosi-Ward, Arkel, and Charles Carter. The low bid was submitted by Arkel who has been awarded the contract. We are grateful to all of these fine companies and we are excited to work with Arkel.Pre-construction sales along with the contributions of three faithful Mercy families have made this project totally self-funded. There is no funding used from Traditions For Tomorrow for either construction or maintenance of the Columbarium Garden. The construction fence has already gone up and demolition and construction has begun. Please note this fence is for safety purposes during construction time. In the interest of serving our Church Family, and because of the COVID-19 effects on our economy, the pre-construction pricing of cremation niches will remain until construction is complete. Thus, at this present construction time, there will be no price increase. Please note that cremation burials are significantly less expensive than traditional burials. The Mercy Columbarium Garden is open to everyone – Catholic and Non-Catholics; Parishioners and Non-Parishioners alike. You may make a personal appointment; or have any questions answered over the phone by speaking with Michelle Schroeder at the Church Office at (225) 926-1883, [email protected] events of the pandemic will not stop the vision of Mercy and our Future together! The Columbarium Garden was the third piece of our Master Plan – Phase 1. WE DREAMED IT, WE PROMISED IT, AND WE ARE DELIVERING IT.The design has been created by Pete Newton of Newton Landscape Group, Coleman Partners Architects, Dale Songy and Joe Saffiotti, and Johnny Fife of Arkel Construction.I am very excited to move forward in our great vision for Mercy.Fr.
