Year 4 Camps Our Year 4 students head off next week on their upcoming camps at the Currumbin Farm School. At the camps, students will participate in the some of the following activities: Orienteering, rock climbing, interaction with farm animals, creek life investigations, archery, camp fires, sleeping in tents, team building activities and more. The dates for the Year 4 Camps are: 19 - 21 Mar (4B,4C, 4M girls) 21 - 23 Mar (4A,4D, 4M boys) Year 5 Camp Dates The Year 5 camp will be held next term at the Runaway Bay Sports and Recreation Centre from the 4th to 6th June. Notes have been sent home with further details. Prep Hearing Screening Merrimac School is funding screening for all Preps for their hearing on Wednesday 30 May and Thursday 31 May by the Paediatric Hearing Service, ‘Hear and Say’. The screening will take no more than 15 minutes per child. The audiologists will test hearing of both ears under headphones, test the function of the middle ear for both ears and provide recommendations to families on the results. Hearing difficulties can have a significant effect on a child’s ability to learn if not detected early. Hearing needs to be monitored over time even if children have passed earlier testing. Forms will go out in Week 9 (Mon 19 March) and are due back to school by Friday 20 April. It is advisable to return the forms as soon as possible to ensure access to this free service. Voluntary Resources Contribution Reminder The school booklist contained a voluntary student contribution component to assist the school to enhance resources available for student learning. At Merrimac, a large percentage of parents pay this voluntary contribution. Thank you to those who have already paid. The contribution covers the use of class text books, computer consumables, art and craft materials, photocopying of workbooks, homework sheets, etc. The cost is $60.00 per student. Because the shared curriculum materials are allocated on a class basis, non-payment of the contribution reduces the amount of additional resources to all children within the class. Some parents may have overlooked or forgotten this contribution. If this is the case, payment of the shared curriculum materials contribution can be made through our school Bookshop. Matific, Reading Eggs, Reading Eggspress and Language Perfect The P&C have subsidised the cost of these programs by $5.00 each for 2018. This means there is a cost of $5.00 for Matific, (Prep to Year 6), $5.00 for Reading Eggs/Eggspress (Prep to Year 6) and $5.00 for Language Perfect (Years 4 to 6 only) included in the school booklist. Some parents may have overlooked this payment when they purchased books for the year. To access these programs the $5.00 per program per child cost must be paid. These are not voluntary payments. Reminder letters were sent home early this week to those families who have not paid these amounts. If payments are not received by the end of the school term (Thursday 29 March), student Matific, Reading Eggs/Eggspress and Language Perfect accounts will then be disabled. Payments can be made to our School Bookshop. If you have a query re these payments, please contact the Bookshop on 55227846 (open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.00am to 9.00am).

From the desk of Ralph and Rosie Merrimac State School Focus of The week Over this past week, the children at Merrimac State School have been examining the topic of what it means to be safe by playing in their own areas. In their classes and on parade all students have been asked to discuss how they can keep their friends and themselves safe by playing in their own areas. Congratulations to P4 and 3A for receiving our Ralph and Rosie Class of the week. P4 received their award for keeping their bag area neat and tidy. 3A received their award having a clean eating area whenever they walk past their classroom. Congratulations to all girls and boys for remembering to be safe, respectful learners in the classroom and in the playground.

Third Party Website Consent form for Matific, Reading Eggs and Language Perfect All parents in Years P-6 would have received a Third Party Website Consent form at the Parent Teacher afternoon. This form is part of a new policy to provide parents with detailed information about the storage of student data for Matific, Reading Eggs and Language Perfect; as well as other websites. This form needs to be returned to the classroom teacher as soon as possible. Program subscriptions can be paid for at the Bookshop if this has not already been finalised. The consent form and the subscription payment are required in order for students to have ongoing website access. Matific, Reading Eggs and Language Perfect are great resources to support your child’s learning. Please contact your child’s teacher if you need more information. “Bullying No Way Day” – Imagine a World Free from Bullying This Friday 16th March 2018, Australian schools will stand united in their communities to imagine a world free from bullying.

The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says:

• Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons.

• Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

• Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

• Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying

We invite you to take a stand with us on Friday to imagine a world, community and school free from bullying. A community where respect for each and every person is encouraged and celebrated. A community where we can work, learn and play safely together.

This week a commitment hand was distributed to every child. If you would like to show your support on Friday, add your name to the hand, cut it out and send it in to school with your children this Friday. Teachers will display the hands on the classroom doors.

For further information on Bullying and its effect on lives go to www.bullyingnoway.gov.au.

Student School Banking An error occurred through the Commonwealth Bank to the student banking last Wednesday 7th March. It would have only gone into your student’s account yesterday the 14th March and the student banking for the 14th March will go in today, 15th March. The bank apologised for this inconvenience. There will be a “sign up day” next Wednesday 21st March from 8.00am in the undercover area near the Tuckshop. Breakfast/Fitness Program The Breakfast/Fitness Programs continues this term, on a Wednesday, for interested Years 3 to 6 students. There are 100 places available. Students need to commit to attending each week from 8.00am to 8.45am to be part of the program. The program will run through till the end of Term One. the support from Coles Worongary, Tina Nenadic (Gold Coast Property Sales & Rentals), the P and C Association and the Genesis Church who are ongoing supporters of the Breakfast/Fitness Program allowing us to buy the various breakfast requirements. There will be no Breakfast/Fitness Program in Week 10 this term (Wednesday 28 March). Parent Fitness (Boot Camp) Program – free for Merrimac Parents Thanks to Tina Nenadic, from Gold Coast Property Sales & Rentals, we are continuing this year with the free fitness program for our parents. Simone Doyle is the fitness instructor who runs the sessions weekly in the MPC/Tennis Court area each Thursday from 1.45pm to 2.45pm. It is completely free. I’m sure that there are many parents who would be interested in being part of this program. Tina will be contacting parents from last year and reminding them of the continuation of the program. Simone can only cater up to 20 in the session so please register your interest with Tina as soon as possible.
