A Note from Hal Morton

I spent a couple days in Minneapolis attending church music workshops hosted by Augsburg College. The first was an all-day intensive workshop on keyboard improvisation techniques. There were four students and two teachers, so there was quite a bit of individ-ualized attention. Martial Besombes, the primary instructor, is the Director of Worship and Music at Park Avenue United Methodist Church in south Minneapolis—one of the most racially and culturally integrated congregations in the Twin Cities (and a home con-gregation to Prince). He was classically trained at the Paris Conservatoire, and has worked as a session musician with many jazz, country, gospel and hip hop artists. Jay Beech, Executive Director of the Center for Worship and Music Studies at Augsburg College, assisted in the improve class, and led the second workshop on playing hymns with a worship band. Much of the second class involved demonstration that traditional hymns can easily fit into the repertoire of praise bands. Jay is a fine electric bass player, and was joined by a piano/synth player and a drummer. A small horn section joined in for the last two or three selections. Most of the hymns were presented pretty straight, though with various rhythm (bass and drum) styles for underpinning. A few of the more adven-turous arrangements used creative time signatures as well. Thanks to the Messiah Worship and Memorials committees for sending me to these continuing education sessions.

Hal Morton Messiah has always had a number of members singing in our community choir, Bel Canto. If you are a singer, and haven’t been part of this marvelous organization, consider joining this fall. Auditions are simple—sing a hymn and test for range to help balance this year’s choir. WORSHIP AND CELEBRATION

OAK STREET BAPTIST CHURCH is having their won-derful young musician’s concert to raise money for “Take Away Hunger” on Friday, August 19th at 7 p.m. The talent of our local young people is amazing and uplifting. Don’t miss it!

CONFIRMATION CAMP We have 9 children attending confirmation camp: Wayne Carruthers, Matthew Dittner, Lachlan Kirk, Quinlan Kirk, Narisio Lotegeluaki, Nenyo Lotegeluaki, Brian Newberry, Emma Tessen, and Kylie Wolf and 1 child attending Ranch camp: Lilli-an Benz. Zach Morgan is also at camp this summer in their leadership training program. Kelly will also be attending camp all week with the confirmation kids. FREE LIBRARY Messiah’s Communications Committee announces a new free library, on the shelves of the west side of the church library. Feel free to take any book that inter-ests you, and please bring your good already-read

books to share with others. So far, the free library includes fiction, gardening, travel, and children’s books.

SERVICE AND WITNESS

OUR 2016 ELCA CHURCHWIDE CONVENTION meets in New Orleans August 8-13, and Messiah member Lotegeluaki Lengai is a voting member elect-ed by the 2015 Southeast Iowa Synod. He has been preparing for this event together with other voting members from our synod. Keep Lotegeluaki in your prayers as he travels to New Orleans, and learn more about this year’s churchwide assembly on the ELCA website.

From the Pastor’s desk

American Christianity is experiencing a wave of innovative new ministries that completely contradict the cho-rus of complaints that we are a failing church. My summer reading list includes two autobiographies about becoming Christian leaders in the 21st century. Nadia Bolz-Weber has published her “Accidental Saints, Finding God in All the Wrong People”, and “Pastrix, the Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner and Saint”. Bolz-Weber, six foot tall and plenty tattooed, is pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints ELCA in Denver. Ask Messiah’s youth how she preached to them at last summer’s youth gathering, and they will quote her faithfully and accurately. Bolz-Weber is an honest, earthy and compelling preacher.

Sarah Miles has published her story of having been kidnapped by faith, “Take this Bread: a Radical Conver-sion”. She describes how, early one morning, she, who was raised an atheist, wandered into a church, re-ceived communion, and found herself transformed. She embraced a faith she had once scorned. She creat-ed a food pantry at her Episcopal church to feed everyone in the congregation’s neighborhood. Miles says, “Christianity wasn’t an argument I could win, or even resolve. It wasn’t a thesis. It was a mystery I was finally willing to swallow.”

I am considering helping groupfund an ELCA mission congregation in Orlando, Florida, named Castle Church Brewing Community. That’s a direct reference to Martin Luther’s home congregation in Wittenberg, Germany. Seriously. Find this congregation online at castlechurchbrewing.com. “Brewing. Community. Fermenting Love. Our brewery crafts high quality beer that brings people together. Our church is a community where those who question faith can find it and those who have found faith can question it.” There’s more to read on their website: “Castle Church is, for us, a commitment to : simplicity and quality…doing God’s work of restor-ing and reconciling communities in Jesus’ name…using our blessings to bless the world outside of ourselves.”

Does this all sound like crazy church? Well, it does to me too. But then, the Christian church has a crazy be-ginning and a crazy history. What if a little Holy Spirit craziness gets into our life too? What would you write about? How about writing it for our newsletter? Pastor Susanne+

Shaping Futures Through Faith Based Education Messiah Lutheran Preschool News Greetings from the children’s wing of the

church. We are still on summer break! The children are enjoying summer, but the teachers are preparing for the beginning of another school year. Bible School is over and soon the wax on the floors will be set and we will be back in our wing putting things

in order for preschool to begin. We want everything to look brand new and exciting for all those first days of school. We are still registering for our 3 and 4-year-old sessions. Remember if you are a member of Messiah Lutheran you will get a discount on preschool tuition! Our first day of preschool will be August 29th for the 4-year-olds and August 30th for the 3-year-olds class. Prior to the first days, a Parent Orientation meeting for all our new parents will be held on Wednesday evening, August 24 at 6:00 PM. The children will have an open house in order to meet their teachers and see their classrooms before preschool begins. The 3-year-olds class will be on Thursday, August 25th from 9 AM – 11 AM. The 4-year-olds classes will have their open house on Friday morning, August 26th from 9:00 – 11:00 AM.

This is a good time to be thinking about making that contribution to our scholarship program or providing tuition for a child that needs help with being able to attend preschool. Yes, we do have some chil-dren here at Messiah that could use some of your help in being able to attend preschool, as well as others from our community. We welcome donations and gift cards are always welcome as they help with class-room supplies. If you have questions, please call Ms. Margie (our Director) at 754-7591 ext. 2. We are excit-ed to be soon returning and to meeting our new little ones that will be coming in the fall full of wide-eyed excitement and wonder. Back to School Month

School is right around the corner! As children and teens adjust to a new classroom routine, the transition can often bring to light behavioral issues that may stem from a mental health diagnosis, such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, or oppositional defiant disorder.

Did you know Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) partners with schools across the state to provide mental health services right in their schools? This makes it easier to collaborate with educators and reduce the transportation barrier that sometimes makes it hard for families to attend appointments.

Becoming a kid again

At 8 years old, Sofia was often the only one caring for her younger siblings. She worried constantly they didn’t have enough food. She helped them hide in a closet when their mother’s boyfriend began drinking and hitting their mother.

That all began to change when Mitch came into the children's lives. Mitch is a family care coordinator for LSI. His job is to keep Iowa kids and families safe. He made sure Sofia and her siblings had clothes for school. He helped transport them to doctor's appointments. He remembered their birthdays.

And when it became clear that living with their biological parents wasn't a safe option, Mitch was by the siblings' side and advocated to keep them together. Kate and Mark, a couple who had provided foster care for two of Sofia's younger siblings, decided to adopt all five kids.

"We had faith. We knew it was the right thing to do. Why? Because they are worth it," Kate says.

Sofia is now 12 and thriving. Kate has photos of Mitch visiting the kids on Halloween and dropping off presents from LSI on Christmas Eve.

"Now Sofia gets to be a kid again," says Kate. "Every child deserves that."

LSI has an office in Burlington, at Trinity Lutheran Church on Central Ave. The Burlington office has a particular mission, to support families at risk of losing custody of their children. If you know a local family who could use these services, invite them to contact LSI at 319-754-2298.

A NOTE FROM EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Just a reminder that any actions that are brought before council to be considered for a vote need to be available for executive committee on the Thursday before the council meeting the third Tuesday of the month. That is when the agenda for the month’s meeting is put together. This includes requests to use the church facilities. Issues that come up after that Thursday will be included in the following month’s agenda. That means that all action items are due by August 11 for the next meeting. Your help is really appreciated.
