Rupert Bear illustrator to help create Ferryhill and Chilton book

Approach Too, with children and young people in Ferryhill and Chilton, is working with Rupert Bear illustrator and book pub-lisher, Stuart Trotter, to create a book of Ferryhill and Chilton stories. The book, funded through the neighbourhood fund of county councillors, Pauline Crathorne and John Lindsey, will paint an original picture in words of Ferryhill and Chilton.Glenys Newby from Approach Too said: “We want to capture those family and everyday stories

that reflect people’s lives.“We are looking for stories from all generations and all ages and would love people to share their funny, poignant and sad stories of their community.”The pupils from Chilton, Cleves Cross, Dean Bank and Ferryhill Station Primary Schools, along with students at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, are collecting the stories and then working with Stuart to edit and il-lustrate the book. “As well, pupils will be involved in the marketing,

promotion and selling of the book,” added Glenys. “We are not looking for people to write huge amounts, just a few para-graphs about everyday life. “It can be about school days, going out with friends, games people played or significant events that touched people’s lives, but we need our community to share their stories and memories.” If you can help, send your stories by email to [email protected] or contact Approach Too through their facebook page.

Police are reminding elderly or vulnerable people not to feel pres-sured into signing up for products or services if they receive a telephone ‘cold call’.The warning comes after a number of elderly resi-dents in the area reported they had received calls from one company in par-ticular trying to sell them security or fire alarms for considerable amounts of money. While there is no sugges-tion the company con-cerned has done anything illegal, police and fire chiefs say some people may be vulnerable to the

sales tactics and easily persuaded to sign up for a system or device they do not need, or cannot afford.“Businesses are perfectly entitled to try and drum up trade, but judging by the reports we have had a number of people feel the tactics being used are quite high-pressure,” said PC David Williamson from Barnard Castle police.“We are concerned that some people may be vul-nerable to this kind of approach and we would urge them to seek free advice from ourselves or the Fire and Rescue service before they commit to anything.”

Police and Fire service warn on cold callers

Andrew Allison, community safety manager for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Free, unbiased advice and practical help regarding home security and home fire safety is available from the fire service and police so there is no need to pay large sums of money to private companies who unexpectedly call you at home.“We would advise elderly and vulnerable people, or their families on their behalf, to call CDDFRS on 0845 223422 or email [email protected] to arrange a ‘Safe and Wellbeing’ visit.

Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College students took part in an enterprise challenge recently, where they were tasked to organise a concert at Metro Radio Arena.

FBEC students ensure ‘Arena Gig’ is a sell out

Year 9 students at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College (FBEC) took part in Arena Gig last week - an exciting enterprise chal-lenge set by Durham Educa-tion Business Partnership. In groups of eight, students took on the role of an events management company to organise a concert at New-castle’s Metro Radio Arena. Students used a variety of enterprise and employabil-ity skills such as teamwork, communication and time management to design a floor plan, flyer and ticket for the event. Creativity skills were put to the test with wrist bands and back stage passes being created as well as hair, costume and make up

for the A-list celebrities! The day culminated in each group presenting their ideas to their peers and business ambassadors from a range of employers such as the Royal Navy. The winning group were team two, which con-sisted of Brianna Bell, Jack Birbeck, Alfie Blackett, Joseph Armstrong, Liana Bond, Katie Breen, Brodi Briggs and Erin Brown.Miss Gibson, Director of Learning for Business and Enterprise at FBEC said: “I am extremely proud of the Year 9 students who worked incredibly hard throughout the event.“Their ideas and designs were very creative and the confidence and com-

munication skills evident throughout the presenta-tions was very impressive.”Sandra Stephenson, the Business & Learning Co-ordinator from Durham Education Business Part-nership who led the event said: “I was very impressed with the Year 9 students who took part in the Arena Gig event.“They worked very hard to produce a high standard of work and I was particu-larly impressed with the standard of their presenta-tions. “They were well prepared and very professionally delivered. The whole year group was a pleasure to work with and a credit to the school”.

Martin Griffiths and his son Samuel take part in the Great North Run for Butterwick Hospice in memory of Martin’s wife and Samuel’s mum, Judy.

Edith Whitfield, who was Mayor of Ferryhill at the millen-nium has passed away at the age of 95 years.

Run for local lives

Butterwick Hospice is en-couraging readers of the Chapter to support the charity by taking part in the Great North Run and raising funds.A spokesperson for But-terwick said: “The Great North Run is one of the North East’s biggest chal-lenges and readers can run for Butterwick Hospice and grab our wonderful ‘perks package’ spon-sored by Ramside Spa, as you cross the finish line. “This year we are offering you the chance to request your entry fee back if you achieve the sponsorship goal. And if you don’t

want to run alone, why not gather a team and tackle it together?“We want you to get com-petitive and undertake the #TeamButterwick challenge as part of our #RunForButterwick initia-tive. “Whether you’re joining forces with loved ones, best friends, colleagues or your running club mates, there’s an opportunity for friendly rivalry with our other #TeamButterwick entrants.”Butterwick Hospice will be awarding four teams a prize for the following categories: Best Fancy Dress; Fastest Average Time; Highest Average Fundraising Total and Most Creative Fundraising Activity.“There will also be an exciting league table for our teams to see how each team is performing week-on-week with training and their average times and fundraising totals,” they added. “Our lovely pin up

photograph is of Butter-wick Hospice Ambassador, Martin Griffiths, who ran for the Hospice, and his gorgeous son, Samuel, who ran in the Mini Great North Run! “Martin runs in memory of his beautiful wife Judy, who so sadly lost her battle with cancer when Samuel was only five months old.“Because of the support of local people who raise funds for Butterwick Hospice Care our team of skilled doctors, nurses and family support workers were able to support Martin and his family. “Now he works alongside Butterwick Hospice as an Ambassador to help ensure that Butterwick Hospice is able to help other young families like his.”Runners can sign up at www.butterwick.org.uk/greatnorthrun2017 or call Gail on 01642 628930. A girl from Reeth, they call her Amy by name

She did not realise she would rise to musical

fame,

A tall lass she was, but she rose to musical

heights

Playing to people nearly every night.

Many a night she drove from town to town

She never did let people down,

On the organ she gave them a treat

The old dancers had some zip in their feet.

She played in hotels, clubs and pubs to give

people pleasure

It wasn’t work to Amy, it was leisure,

Dogs and cats she gave a home

Hens, birds and a dove, she sheltered them all

with love.

Boxes of food she gave away

To people who could not afford to pay,

But alas Amy has gone, no more music or

song,

I hope she is up above with the Lord

And maybe playing her favourite keyboard.

On Saturday, 4th February, Spennymoor Police officers responded to concerns about a large group of youths drinking and setting fires in a field behind Gordon Terrace in Ferry-hill. When officers arrived they found two fires had been set underneath low overhead cables and a large congregation of youths gathered around the fires. One female was so drunk she could not stand by herself.

The fire brigade had to be called out to extinguish the bonfires while police dealt with the youths.A police spokesperson said: “The youths were in a field in the middle of nowhere, making it difficult for emergency services to reach the scene. “Had a full scale emergen-cy occured, we would not have been able to access the area with full equip-ment. “Please think of the conse-quences of your behaviour.

Police and fire services needed to deal with underage drinkers

“Youths may think it's all fun and games drinking and setting fires and often accuse us of ruining their fun, but clearly their safety and the safety of others is our paramount concern. “We would urge parents to please make sure you know where your children are. “We have a zero tolerance approach to this type of behaviour and ask that anybody who witnesses anything like this happen-ing calls 101 or, in an emer-gency, dials 999.”

On the march again. County Durham teaching assistants are asking the public to join them on a ‘national day of solidarity’ march in Durham City on Saturday 25th March.

Teaching Assistants to hold ‘day of solidarity’ march

On Saturday 25th March, County Durham Teaching Assistants, who remain in negotiations with Durham County Council over pay and conditions, will be holding a ‘national day of solidar-ity’ march in Durham city centre from 9am, as part of their campaign against the local authority’s plans to slash their pay by 23% while increasing the number of hours they must work.In mid-December, striking teaching assistants secured a postponement of Durham County Council’s threat to dismiss and re-engage the county’s 2,700-strong TA staff at the beginning of January, forcing the authority to return to the negotiating table.DCC’s Labour-led authority has said that a full review of TA job descriptions will take place and is expected to report in September. However, teaching assistant representatives and negoti-ators for Unison, the union that represents most of the county’s TAs have insisted that “significant progress”

must be made by March or they will be forced to return to the picket lines.A spokesperson for County Durham Teaching Assistant Activists, the group formed by TAs to fight the county’s proposals said: “Contrary to what the public may have heard, this dispute is not resolved and no deal has been done. “Unions are still in negotia-tions and TAs are growing impatient with the lack of ‘demonstrable’ progress so far.”The group has led several high profile demonstrations across the county - in-cluding several at County Hall - which have received national attention while Unison General Secretary, Dave Prentis has pledged that the union will support striking TAs financially. The spokesperson added: “Durham TAs have had phenomenal support from across the country since their dispute began and they are now calling on everyone to once again join them in a huge show

of solidarity on 25th March to ensure that the council knows that they are going nowhere and time is running out to resolve this once and for all.“The march will be followed by a grassroots-led rally at the beautiful Redhills, home of the Durham Miners’ Associa-tion.”The group is also planning a second all-day vigil at County Hall every day during the half-term break. As with last year’s October break, there will be a permanent demonstration throughout the half-term with shifts of teaching as-sistants volunteering to remain on site from 8am until 5pm every day from Monday to Thursday. As a result of their ongoing campaign, in December Durham’s teaching assis-tants were named by the Independent newspaper in its list of unsung heroes of 2016.

Ferryhill Celtic travelled to Chester le Street on Sunday 5th Februrary to take on mid-table Hilda Park FC in the Durham & District Sunday League, returning home with all three points after securing a 2-1 win.The victory sees Celtic leapfrog local rivals Ferry-hill Dynamoes into second place in the table after the Dynamoes went down to a 3-0 loss away at Washing-ton Cross Keys. Celtic are eight points behind leaders, West Rainton FC, but having played just 11 games, have five games in hand over the top side.Celtic started the game strongly, pressing high up the pitch as they looked to take the game to their op-ponents. The strategy worked well, but it took until the 35th minute for the visitors to make the breakthrough with a scrappy goal, the last touch coming from Jason White. The goal was enough to secure a slender half time

lead, but it was Celtic who again showed the initia-tive in the second half and doubled their lead on the hour when Luke Thompson converted a spectacular volley into the top left hand corner of the net. With ten minutes re-maining, Sam Henderson halved the deficit to make for a competitive end to the game, but Celtic saw it through to collect maximum points.Next up is an eagerly awaited Ferryhill derby as Celtic and Dynamoes face off in the JD Taxis Guards Cup semi-final.Celtic will be looking to avenge their only league defeat of the season so far by grabbing the cup final spot ahead of their local rivals. With the changing rooms at Broom Rec still being refurbished, details of the venue will be published on the Ferryhill Celtic Facebook page during the week. Kick off in the big match is scheduled for 10.30am.

Aidan and Aimee Forster continued their rise up the Thai boxing ranks with yet another successful outing, this time at one of the UK’s top shows, held in Barnsley Metrodome.

Aimee secures European belt as Aidan wins debut Pro-Am

On Sunday 29th January, the burgeoning careers of Ferryhill’s Thai boxing siblings, Aidan and Amiee Forster, continued to flourish as the pair fought on the Super Sandee Show#3, one of the top Thai boxing shows in the UK, at Barnsley Metrodome.Up first was 9-year-old Amiee, fighting an older and very good Dutch girl for a European title.Amiee was rewarded for a great fight, getting the judges’ decision to

be crowned European champion. Aidan too had to step up in class for his bout, fighting in his first pro-am, the rules of which means fighters can also use elbows. Like his sister, Aidan also performed superbly winning by unanimous decision. Both fighters train at Shildon under coach Gary MacAlister at Phoenix Thai Boxing Gym. Phoenix is holding its annual fight show, Time to

Fight 3, on Saturday 29th April at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, with a junior fight show through the day and and adult fight show on the night. If any individual or business would be interested in sponsoring a bout, contact Gary through his Facebook page - search for “gaz phoenix thai” on Facebook. If anyone would like to sponsor Aidan and Amiee for the future, contact Michael Forster on 07824 828579.
