Ministry of Agriculture

It is the apex body for formulation and administration of the rules and regulations andlaws relating to agriculture in India.

The three broad areas of scope for the Ministry are

International co-operation in the field of agricultural research and education

including relations with foreign and international agricultural research and

educational institutions and organi)ations# including participation in international

conferences# associations and other bodies dealing with agricultural research and

education and follow-up decisions at such international conferences etc.

$undamental# applied and operational research and higher education including co-

ordination of such research and higher education in agriculture including agroforestry# animal husbandry# dairying# fisheries# agricultural statistics# economics

and mar%eting.

Department of Agriculture and Cooperation

It is responsible for the formulation and implementation of *ational policies

and programmes aimed at achie(ing rapid agricultural growth through

optimum utili)ation of the country+s land# water# soil and plant resources.

It underta%es all possible measures to ensure timely and ade,uate supply of

inputs and ser(ices such as fertili)ers# seeds# pesticides# agricultural

implements and also to pro(ide agricultural credit# crop insurance and ensureremunerati(e returns to the farmer for his agricultural produce.

It is entrusted with the responsibility for collection and maintenance of a wide

range of statistical and economic data relating to agriculture# re,uired for

de(elopment planning# organi)ing agricultural census# assisting and ad(ising

the tates in underta%ing scarcity relief measures and in management of

natural calamities e.g. flood# drought# cyclone# etc.

It is responsible for the formulation of o(erall cooperati(e policy in thecountry# matters relating to national cooperati(e organi)ations# cooperati(e

training and education.

The Department also participates in acti(ities of international organi)ations#

for fostering bilateral cooperation in agricultural and allied sectors.

It is to ensure ade,uate and timely a(ailability of fertili)ers at affordable pricesfor maximi)ing agricultural production in the country.
